Further conversation on that "how do you feel about people saying 'I'll pray for you'" poll I reblogged a bit ago:
A part of big reason I'm so uncomfortable with it is that at my church it was frequently used as a way to shut people up. Sometimes it was genuine, but a lot of times it was not said to mean "I'm thinking about you" or other sentiments like that. It was used as a way to weasel out of any kind of emotional support and to get you to stop talking while also showing off how ~holy~ and ~righteous~ they are.
"I'll pray for you" is the end of the conversation and can be implemented at nearly any point for that purpose. Because if you're anything but oh so grateful that someone will take the time and effort to pray for you, it raises eyebrows about if you're really a true Christian that trusts God and believes in the transformative power of prayer. It's a way for the person offering prayers to subtly (sometimes) brag about how pious they are, how connect to God they are, how good of a Christian they are, and the way the person responds indicates how good of a Christian they are, and they know it. Wanting human emotional support over God's? Suspicious at best.
And after doing all that, after shutting people down, not offering emotional support, subtly (or not so subtly) showing off how pious and committed to God they are, a lot of people don't even actually do it. I don't believe that prayer does anything, but many of the people that do believe prayer is effective and can help you and shut you down for the purpose of it don't even fucking pray for you. That sounds like I'm assuming what people are or aren't doing in their private time, but it was enough of an issue in my old church that we talked about it and had sermons about it.
If the context of someone saying "I'll pray for you" is after them providing emotional support and demonstrating that they actually care, I can't lie, it does sour the interaction for me, but I'm generally able to let it slide even if it makes me uncomfortable. But so often the context is people trying to use "I'll pray for you" in the place of actual emotional support instead of supplementing it, and those are very different things.

Tumblr media
Your life was pretty boring since you graduated. You worked in a bank, the days dragged by as people requested various things. It was usually pretty quiet, so it gave you time to reminisce on your teenage years at Shiratorizawa Academy.
Cheers errupted from all corners of the gym as your boyfriend, Ushijima Wakatoshi, effortlessly scored yet another point. To a normal person, his face was neutral after he scored a point, but to a person with trained eyes, like you, raw passion and excitement radiated from him as his eyes lit up slightly and a small smile tugged at the side of his lips.
His eyes desperately searched the crowd and his soon as he found you, he gave you a small wink and a genuine smile. You gave him a thumbs up and grinned back, a slight blush painting your cheeks as he chuckled.
After the game, you ran up to him and junped into his arms, he smiled and hugged you tightly, kissing the top of your head as you expressed how proud you of him were.
Those were the days, but that was years ago now. You wondered where Ushijima was these days, probably living a great life, with a successful career and tons of girls fantasizing over him.
Your thoughts were interrupted by three masked men, holding guns, stormed into the bank. They scanned the building as everyone kneeled down in surrender. Their masks weren't very scary, they were just three mainstream cartoon characters, goofy expressions and happy intent. However, you got the impression that under the mask were completely different people. The men had cut out eye holes in the masks, revealing eyes that held such anger and hatred, but the colours were nothing special, almost boring. Your mind instantly flashed to Ushijima's eyes. He struggled to convey emotion, but his eyes were always the solution to that. The hazel orbs were kind and often exhausted, he never allowed himself enough rest and it really showed in his eyes.
As soon as one of the robber's eyes met yours, he froze. His legs halted, stuck to the spot in fear and his eyes were wide as saucers.
Within seconds of them noticing you, they scampered, their masks falling off as the ran, revealing that they were pale with fear. A leaflet flies out of one of their pockets and floated over to you.
The contents of the leaflet made your jaw drop and your heart quicken. It was advertising on a crime organisations and in the center of the leaflet was Ushijima. He stood proud and tall, wearing a crisp, white suit and black gloves. His face formed a cold, hard scowl, it felt as if he was staring right at you, peering into your soul.
His eyes were almost unrecognizable, they were once so kind and genuine, but now they were glazed over with anger and malice. Sure, they were the same eyes that you jad always loved, but they were so much more menacing.
You brushed off the encounter with the robbers and the leaflet and left your job to go home for the day. For the rest of the day, the poster was on your mind. He ran a crime organisation now?? How had you not found out about this before?! He was still the same old Ushijima, but something changed him.
It was late that night when you heard a knock on your door. You sighed, reluctantly getting up and answering it. As you swung open the door with a yawn, you noticed the very man that had plagued your mind for hours earlier that day.
Only now, his eyes were filled with adoration and he looked slightly timid. A blush painted his face as you gasped at him, left utterly speechless.
"Hello, darling, it's been a while"
