Fic Rec Friday
Thanks again to @mediumgayitalian for the idea!
Below are 5 fics I've enjoyed this past week/recently.
IT'S A SCREAM, BABY! by @rosyredlipstick
https://archiveofourown.org/works/45360994
Summary:
It’s June 1984, Prince is at the top of the charts, and Nico di Angelo has spent the last three weeks scratching at mosquito bites and herding around a group of elementary school kids—and somehow it’s been the best summer of his life. - “Welcome to Camp Crystal Lake!” Jason yelled over, ever-polite.
--
Okay I'm back with another Rosy rec. When I tell you this story literally captured me within the first paragraph and held me in a vice grip the entire time. I literally started the beginning and went "now this is how you start a story" and then couldn't put it down. This is a horror/slasher AU, but none of the major characters die! It's a love letter to a lot of horror films, so if you're in to that sort of thing, I'd totally recommend. Or if you're like me and don't really watch horror, I'd still recommend because it's that good. Also once again Will and Nico's dynamic is top tier in this fic, and I really love Will's POV.
The Other "Heroes" by SirOliverSurface
https://archiveofourown.org/works/29528811
Summary:
Percy Jackson had seen weird before. Swimming in the River Styx to gain invincibility to fight the Titan lord of time was "weird". Getting your memory wiped by the goddess of marriage and family in a gambit to unite Greek and Roman demigods was "weird". Having a spiritual attachment to blue food was... well... completely understandable, no matter how much Leo joked about it. But this? This is "weird".
When a battle goes wrong, and magic goes wild, the son of Poseidon and Hero of Olympus finds himself dumped in a world that seems strangely familiar. The Greek Gods are still around, the old myths were really true, all seems well. But one thing has changed: the people he's come to love. And it doesn't take long for him to figure out that these new faces all miss someone else, too; Hero of Olympus, and daughter of Poseidon, Percie Jackson.
--
This is Percabeth centric, with Solangelo as a side ship, but this story is so good. Granted, I'm only about 150k in, but the writing has captivated me, and the adventure our heroes go on is fascinating to me. Plus I just love the "other" versions of all the heroes. Will I ever be able to finish it? Maybe in 2 years, but hey! It's my go-to fall back on fic when I'm running out of things to read. (It's 1.2 million words!)
August by CordeliaRose
https://archiveofourown.org/works/49031647
Summary:
Somehow, Nico's life only gets more confusing after he defeats a primordial Goddess.
Will Solace accounts for about 90% of that confusion.
(A journey through August, and all its ups and downs.)
--
I just had to rec this story, as I am about to re-read it only a couple of weeks after finishing it the first time because it's just that good. This follows the rest of August after the end of BoO, and the way Will and Nico's relationship develops is just absolutely stunning. Also Nico and Will are autistic coded in this story and it just makes me beyond happy.
peach tea by ghosttotheparty
https://archiveofourown.org/works/48987730
Summary:
He sits up after a moment, but Nico doesn’t let go of his fingers, so he lifts the arm that’s awkward between them and sets it behind Nico, leaning back to rest on it. Nico just looks at the tapestry.
Will brushes his thumb over the side of Nico’s hand gently. His skin is soft. Nico’s fingers tighten on Will’s. It kind of feels like neither of them wants to move. Will doesn’t mind.
or; Will falls in love with the new kid.
--
I love the way ghosttotheparty writes intimacy, just, warm, soft, fragile moments that have such a wonderful air to them. I'm not usually one for high school AU's, but I love their characterization of Will and Nico so much that I just had to try this story, and I'm so glad I did. There's a particular scene where Will helps Nico down from a panic attack, and it just made me want to cry it was so well done. Just a lovely story.
Safe (better keep that thought to yourself) by @buoyantsaturn
https://archiveofourown.org/works/42721455
Summary:
Nico figured he was probably overprepared, but it was better to be safe than sorry, especially when leaving his child with some guy he barely knew and a kid he’d never met.
God, he hoped Will wasn’t some kind of psychopath.
--
I'm back again with another one of CJ's lovely works. I'd been looking for a cute Parent!Nico and Parent! Will kidfic, and this story absolutely delivers. The way that both Will and Nico stumble around each other is so endearing in this story, and their kids are JUST the cutest!! I absolutely recommend this story.
--
Okay that's all! I'll probably keep doing this until I run out of fics to recommend. Have a good friday lovelies!

Well, Sense and Sensibility won my poll a handful of weeks ago, but as I only got around to finishing Song Of Achilles last week, I only began reading S&S today….
Unfortunately, as much as I want to enjoy it, as thoroughly as I enjoyed Pride and Prejudice, reading just the first few chapters earlier gave me a headache. It’s much too wordy for my little ADHD Zoomer brain to fully digest and comprehend right now, and as I want to fully enjoy the books I read, I have decided to put it back on the shelf for now, and revisit it at a later date, when I feel more up to the challenge of understanding the older language used.
Now, I could just choose the next highest book voted for in the poll, but where’s the fun in that? Instead I have shrunk the contestant size, chosen the top 5 books I am most considering, and only leaving the poll active for only 24 hours!
To make things more fair and to allow anyone who might not know my choices well to vote too, I will include a very quick summary of the blurbs on the back for context!
FEED: Main character, Titus, and his friends live on the Moon in a futuristic environment. They are used to a constant stream of online activity sent directly into their brains, called their ‘feed’, until a hacker causes them to malfunction and they are left with nothing but their own thoughts for what is presumably the first time ever.
Like A Love Story: Setting is 1989, New York City. Main character is a teenage boy named Reza. Reza is a gay, closeted, Iranian immigrant who is afraid for people to find out he’s gay as all he knows about the ‘lifestyle’ are the media’s images of men dying from AIDS. A girl he dates, Judy, has an uncle with AIDS who devotes his time to activism with ACT UP. Judy is also best friends with the only out-and-proud guy at their school, Art, who is rebelling against his conservative family by photographing and documenting the AIDS crisis.
Fairy Tale: Main character Charlie is seventeen and meets an old recluse, Mr.Bowditch, who he starts doing jobs for. When the old man dies, he leaves a cassette tape for Charlie, telling the story of the secret he’s been keeping all his life; he has a portal to another world in his shed, and Charlie just inherited it.
Companion Piece: A woman receives an unexpected call from a former classmate/college friend asking for help deciphering a puzzling interaction. Everything is somehow linked to the life of a young blacksmith hounded from her trade and branded a vagrant nearly 500 years ago.
1984: Set in Oceania, a society is being tyrannized. In the furtherance of eradicating all expressions of individuality, people’s lives are constantly monitored via telescreens, helicopter patrols, window-spying and the Thought Police. Main Character Winston Smith sits in the one corner of his apartment that is hidden to write a diary, despite the threat of severe punishment.

my year in review (data/stats/numbers)
this year, mental illness kicked my ass until it didn't (when fabba came back), and then about a week ago, it started kicking my ass again. i wish i had spent more of the year escaping into art. 2023 was the first year in a while, i feel, that has had this low numbers.
part of that is because my special interest in the 2000s emo scene was reawakened by fob's return, so much of my year was spent re-obsessing over them. rediscovering a bunch of music that made me happy ages 12-15, a time period full of suicidal ideation. my suicidal thoughts and impulses were slain, once again, by the fabbaboos like champions in an arena. 'are you not entertained?' and all that.
(the only 're-'s i am counting are film re-watches, so no album re-listens are counted in that. so a bunch of the stuff i did this year is not being counted! i actually listened to a lot more music than i have catalogued here, i just don't personally log re-listens in my physical media log, so they aren't counted here.)
another part of this is that i spent so much of the year working on my own projects, working on myself, and trying to manage my mental illnesses. i quit drugs and wanting to kill myself! i'm learning spanish! i'm graduating in a few months! this is not an apology; i just prefer to do a lot more stuff to distract me from all the horribleness in my life </3.
this is a (hopefully) complete-ish log of stuff i did this year bc i like number and data and keeping logs because i have an intense, immense fear of lack of permanence/forgetting/losing things because i have lost and forgotten so much stuff in my life 😁😁😁
this is going to get long, so i'm putting it under a cut.

10 first lines tagging game
thanks @maraudersaffair for the tag! this seems like a super fun one and also I'm ready to consume some of your fics from your list. Go check out their post if you have a moment!
Rules: share the first lines of ten of your most recent fanfics and tag ten people. If you have written less than ten, don’t be shy and share anyway
If we’re single and not married by the time you’re thirty, I’ll have a baby with you. Friends say it all the time. It’s an innocent pact that usually never comes true. Hermione had been a little more than drunk when she’d said it. After that night, she didn't think anything about it. Both - Explicit - Hermione gets doubleteamed by the Weasley Twins. That's it. That's the fic
First, there was Lavender, and the whole of Hogwarts knew how that went. Then, there was Hermione. That lasted only a few months before she gave up. Ron was thankful for it because he had given up a month earlier, he just didn’t have the guts to tell her. I like your skirt - Explicit - Ron and Harry realizing their feelings for each other and pining so badly that Hermione is ready to lock them in a room together.
1983 - “Place your finger right there in the middle. That’s a good boy, my little Dragon.” 1984 - “Do you like the paper? I charmed it myself,” Narcissa smiled softly. Snowflakes glittered across the paper like the inside of a snow globe. Remember Me As Tradition - GA - a trip through time following how a lovely way to wrap gifts turns into a tradition for generations
Harry Potter has a beautiful arse. Round and plump. Made of pure muscle and just enough fat that it'll probably give a lovely jiggle if you spank it. It’s like a peach that bounces with each step; a bruise would be both a shame and delight. I WANNA SEE SOME ARSE - Explicit - Theo Nott has to share a hotel room (and a bed) for a very drunk week and hopes he won't do something stupid like slip and fall on Potter's cock
There wasn’t a cloud in the sky as the Hogwarts Express pulled into Hogsmeade station, but that didn't mean this was a smart idea. Harry ran his hand through his hair, unable to control the nerves in his body as he waited on the platform for the train to unload. This Could Be A Disaster - Explicit - Harry and Ron run a quidditch summer camp and pull all the stunts they didn't do as teens- drinking, streaking round the pitch, skinny dipping in the lake, and fucking in a classroom
It’s not that Pansy never wanted to return to London after the War. It’s just she never really saw the point. She’d finished her schooling. She escaped Azkaban and any persecution. And most importantly, she was absolutely hated by everyone in Wizarding London. ‘tis the damn season (Pansy’s Version) - GA - Pansy returns to London to find a wish granting coffee machine run by a very fit, cardigan wearing Ron Weasley
The trick of escape is embracing the cold. Humans gravitate towards heat in all aspects of life. Heat to keep their bodies warm, fire to cook their food, hugs to keep the loneliness at bay, the sun to brighten their souls. It’s a design deep down in their cell structures. Locals Only - Explicit - Draco lives with his boyfriends Theo and Blaise in Muggle Newquay, but he's finally allowed to return to the Wizarding World... problem is he doesn't want to
There were no clouds over Andromeda’s beachside cottage when Harry arrived one Wednesday Summer afternoon. The salt breeze washed over him, freeing him from the stress of Auror Training, the rebuilding of Hogwarts, and all the other political bothers that came with being The Chosen One. The cottage had become his safe haven; it was his place to hide from the world that refused to let him breathe. Summer Changes - GA - Draco Malfoy babysits Teddy and Harry can't seem to stay away. To protect Teddy of course. And not because he might have feelings for Draco...
Deep in the Department of Mysteries sat a book atop a plinth that no one was to ever touch. It was not for reading, but recording. Years would pass without change. The ink from the previous entries had faded and dust coated the yellowed parchment. Soulmates With Benefits - Explicit - Ginny and Draco find out their soulmates and begrudgingly are put on the same Quidditch Team... can they resist the pull of soulmates like they want or is it love?
Despite the darkness of the early morning outside, the cottage bursts with light from within. Ron chuckles as he moves through the front yard, following the designated path to not step on any invisible creatures or children’s toys. He can feel eyes on him, but the moment he glances at the open window, the tiny watcher ducks away. A Good Night for Whimsy and Love - Explicit - Ron comes home to his girlfriend Luna and their family with a surprise for her

Multiverse News: Week 2
Greetings, fellow travelers! It’s your favorite hot mess speaking! 🖖
I already knew chances of me doing this weekly were slim, but I’ll be giving these Sunday updates as much as I can! Work was a little crazy the past two weeks, I already miss my vacation days, and my hopes of having an easier next week got crushed on Friday. Naturally, I didn’t have a lot of time to write and read the last two weeks, but I’ll share all the series I’m currently reading and the few WIPs I’ve worked since the last update 😊
I’ve also reached 800 followers (even after blocking a million porn bots 🤣), so THANK YOU so much for stumbling onto this blog and indulging in my little stories. I love and appreciate all of you more than you can ever imagine 😭🖤🖤🖤
I initially wanted to celebrate by opening requests, so I can thank you properly by writing some storylines you want, but since work is crazy and I’m behind on literally everything, I don’t think it’s a good idea for now. Hopefully, things will clear up soon and we can do something fun to celebrate this milestone together 🥳🥂
Currently reading 🤓
A Supernatural Journey by @eevvvaa Dean Winchester x OFC, Sam Winchester x OFC Author’s summary: After an unplanned event in their road trip, Emily and Eva crossed paths with two brothers. One thing leading to another, the two best friends found themselves in what seems to be a supernatural journey…
Green is My Favorite Color by @dean-winchester-is-a-warrior Dean Winchester x OFC Author’s summary: Dean has been her hero from childhood, can she ever get him to be more?
Limelight by @talesmaniac89 CEO!Dean Winchester x Journalist!Reader Author’s summary: The workaholic and media shy CEO of Winchester Inc, Dean Winchester, is forced to try online dating by his friends. What will happen when he swipes right on (Y/N), who is working on a series on online dating for her magazine?
Nightingale by @trektraveler Jensen Ackles x Reader Author’s summary: Jensen Ackles seemed to have it all. A hit television series fifteen years running, a budding music career and a stunning wife. To the casual observer, his life was perfect. But it was a façade. No more real than the supernatural world created on a soundstage. That day on the lake had started with uncertainty, but when he pulled you from the water everything became clear. The truth was, he’d been the one drowning.
That Simple by @avanatural Beau Arlen x Reader Author’s summary: Beau goes to Y/N, a new friend of his, for some dating advice. Is the charming new sheriff gonna get the date that he’s hoping for?
Mind Games by @avanatural Soldier Boy x Reader Author’s Summary: Set in 1984. It’s that time of the year – the supes are having the time of their lives at the Herogasm festival. Soldier Boy seems to have taken a special interest in Y/N, a fellow superhero.
Finished reading 💚
A Rose for the Snake by @all-alone-he-turns-to-stone Dean Winchester x Reader Author’s summary: Since he discovered the club, Dean’s been going at least once a week. Being a dom is something nice, it makes him feel powerful and in control. But is it really what he likes? Or is it the domme assigned to teach him the basics that tells him what to do?
Surrender Part 1 & Part 2 by @b3autyfuldisast3r Jensen Ackles x Reader Author’s summary: Reader is a PA on the set of Big Sky and falls in love with Jensen - who is married. Will she give in to her feelings and destroy a relationship or hide them and risk destroying herself?
Stoking the Flame by @dean-winchester-is-a-warrior Beau Arlen x Jenny Hoyt Author’s summary: Jenny and Beau have been ignoring the spark between them for a long time. How much longer can they continue?
GO CHECK OUT ALL THESE AMAZING STORIES AND AUTHORS IF YOU HAVEN’T ALREADY! 🖤
Series Updates:
DBM: Currently reworking chapter 2. It was too funny and casual. Dean needs to be more broken and devastated. I’m going for that full heartbreak here. Tears, sobs – you shouldn’t be able to function when I’m done with this chapter. You’re welcome.
PH: Finished part 19 and realized it’s the longest of the series yet. Currently, it’s at 5.8k. I already tried to think of scenes to cut and while there are some I could live without plotwise, they’re hilarious and I don’t want to erase those laughs. So, should I split it into two parts instead or can we live with this? Let me know! I’m also halfway through part 20. It’s intense and pretty much follows an episode of the show, which I always found important, so I didn’t want to change too much about it, not even the dialogue. I hope I’m doing it justice in the end ☺️
⚠️ PS: In case you missed it, Part 11 posted yesterday and Parts 12-16 follow this week! Get ready! It’s a pretty wild batch! 🤪
Upcoming One-Shots:
Labyrinth: Started writing it this week for a request (the Wendigo hunt). Currently 1.7k words in. The beginning is a bit creepy because Wendigos were always the monsters that freaked me out the most (because they remind me of the horror movie The Descent and that one always scares me to death.) But Dean’s close to saving her and then there’s all the fluff you could possibly get 🥰
Mercilessly: Giving it the finishing touches. Was initially planning to post it on Dean’s bday, but my work schedule won’t allow me to finish it in time. My muse is also in a fluff mood apparently and not up for evil scheming. I’m as surprised as you are, guys...

Excerpt from an upcoming OTH fic
Author's note: I've been working on a multi-chapter fic about Keith and Karen (as it stands, spanning a decade or two) partially inspired by this exchange between Karen and Whitey in season 3:
"You had Camilla for a lifetime. I had Keith for a few weeks." "Whose fault was that?"
I had a lot of thoughts about what their relationship was like in the years before the start of the show, including what opportunities there had been for the two of them to try something more than friendship, because you know there had to be at least one instance where they had considered it. I had no idea where it would lead me, but the muses have been kind, and I have been excited to share part of what I've been working on.
Coming back to watch OTH as an adult has been interesting, and I've found myself more invested in the storylines of the adults' lives/relationships than the kids' (at least so far). I've also really enjoyed the episodes of the Drama Queens podcast that I've listened to and the insights I've gained into many of the characters and their motivations.
The following excerpt is a few years into their friendship, set in the fall of 1986, and will likely end up being the fourth or fifth chapter.
The working title is Is Almost Enough?
(don't mind my rudimentary photo editing skills of Keith & Karen circa 1986. I'm basically only happy with the insertion of the "TH" onto the sweater) Original photos (at the end of the post) are promo stills from Voyage of the Rock Aliens (1984) and The Cutting Edge (1992), respectively.
One Tree Hill Fanfiction | Keith Scott/Karen Roe | Rated T
Alternate Universe - Pre canon | Inspired by canon | Everybody Lives/Nobody Dies | Friends to Lovers | The Slowest of Burns
Story summary: A look at Keith and Karen throughout the years, starting with when they met in middle school. They have their ups and downs, but with a few tweaks to the events in this universe, they eventually find a happily ever after—together.
Chapter summary: Who am I kidding? Keith told himself. Left to his own devices, he would never have worked up the nerve to ask her out. But now that the opportunity was here, he wasn’t going to let the moment pass him by.
* *** *
Despite the brisk chill in the October air, Karen found herself sitting across from Keith at their usual study spot in the quad. Having finished her chemistry homework, she pulled out the novel she had started reading the prior day. The modern gothic authors were a new favorite of hers after recently being introduced to them in her English class, but that afternoon, the copy of Flowers in the Attic that sat in front of her was seemingly no longer enough to hold her attention.
Instead, she found herself peeking up from the pages to look at Keith, admiring the way the breeze swept through his hair and secretly wishing that her fingers could do the same. She loved the look of concentration on his face and the last thing she wanted to do was break his focus when she was so proud of him for deciding to apply to a couple of four-year universities in addition to the local community college. There was a fleeting thought of how much she would miss him next year when he was off at college, but she brushed it aside. There was something she needed to tell him, and Karen didn’t want to wait a moment longer.
“Dan and I broke up,” she said abruptly.
Keith’s head jerked back, but he kept his eyes on the application he had been filling out. “I…” He steeled himself and looked up at her expectant face. “I’m sorry to hear that, Karen.” He tapped his pen on the table as he thought about what to say next. “How are you, uh–how are you doing with that?”
“Well, first I was pissed. But that was before we broke up. And then I was relieved. Because I didn’t have to put up with his crap anymore. And now… Well, now I’m…” she looked into Keith’s eyes, her expression growing hopeful as she came closer to the words she had been holding onto for far too long. “I’m happy. Because there’s this other guy who I really like.”
She watched as Keith’s face dropped, suddenly becoming stoic.
“And I’m hoping that… Well, if he likes me too, he might ask me out.”
“Oh,” he said quietly, not picking up on her hints. “Well, I hope that works out for you.” He looked down at the application once more, and found that her news left him unable to make sense of the words on the page in front of him.
“Keith…” Karen waited for his gaze to return to hers. She gave him a look, willing him to understand. She smiled shyly.
“Oh!” A slow smile grew on his face as the realization hit him. Flustered by being put on the spot and Karen’s nervous smile as she hoped for reciprocation, Keith hardly had time to process it all. For all the time they had spent together over the years and the almost unlimited array of topics they discussed, one thing he had never come close to telling her was that he carried feelings for her of something more than friendship. He liked to think that, eventually—when enough time had passed after her break-up—he might have come up with the idea to ask her out on his own. After testing the waters to find out if she was even interested, of course.
Who am I kidding? He told himself. Left to his own devices, he would never have worked up the nerve. But now that the opportunity was here, he wasn’t going to let the moment pass him by.
“I… Karen…” his chest puffed out with confidence and his chin lifted as he asked her a question he thought he would never say. “Do you want to go out on a date with me?”
Karen’s face lit up, and Keith felt his heart soar.
“Yes,” she answered. “I do.”
“You’re sure it’s not too soon?”
“It’s not soon enough.”

Review: The House of the Scorpion by Nancy Farmer
The House of the Scorpion is a pretty old book. So old that I remember seeing it on the shelves of bookstores and libraries when I was in elementary school. This year, in fact, marks its 21st anniversary since publication. But for the past few weeks, I’ve had snippets of free time here and there throughout the day, and The House of the Scorpion proved to be the perfect thing to fill those odd gaps.
I need to preface this by saying that The House of the Scorpion is one of the best pieces of dystopian fiction I’ve ever read (and quite possibly one of the best books I’ve ever read, period). It’s up there with the classics like 1984 and Animal Farm, and the short stories of Ray Bradbury. I had so many thoughts and feelings after I finished The House of the Scorpion that I just had to write them down, which is a testimony to how good this book is.
The House of the Scorpion is about a boy named Matteo Alcarán. Matt is a clone of the ancient El Patrón, the supreme leader of a country called Opium, a strip of land that lies between the United States and what used to be called Mexico. Growing up on the Alcarán estate, Matt must face off against people who see him as nothing more than a monster because of how he was born. In a heavily prejudiced and violent society, Matt struggles to reclaim his humanity—until a betrayal by one of the only people Matt has ever loved forces him into the dystopian hellscape of the outside world. Fleeing from the Alcarán estate, Matt discovers unspeakable truths, meets true friends, and begins to forge his own path in the world.
This book is so, so good that I don’t think any review I can write will do it justice. Nancy Farmer has mastered the morally gray protagonist. I never thought I could genuinely hate and continuously root for a book character as much as I did for Matt. As irrational and destructive some of his actions were, I felt that I could truly understand his character and where he was coming from. After all, how can you expect a kid to not turn into a selfish psychopath when the people around him have dehumanized and abused him all his life? It’s only human, and that’s what Farmer does so well—create characters that are so painfully human. As such, I found myself becoming more and more invested in Matt’s development over the course of the book. It was immensely rewarding to see him rise above the terrible definitions the Alcaráns assigned to him and grow into a strong, intelligent person.
The worldbuilding in The House of the Scorpion is also absolutely top-tier. Nancy Farmer flawlessly combines the pressing issues of the current day—climate change, the border crisis, drugs, cloning and ethics—into a strikingly realistic dystopia. The world of this book is not extreme like that of 1984. Instead, it’s a future projection of today’s issues, and a commentary on the state of the world and humanity, which brings me to my next idea: this book’s powerful ideas about humanity and the human psyche. How do children respond differently to oppression and abuse? In the worst situations, which parts of human nature shine through? What does it really mean to be human? These questions and more are all explored in depth in The House of the Scorpion. This book made me really think about my own opinions about humanity and the advancement of technology.
Despite the masterful character and worldbuilding, the most appealing part of this book is, in my opinion, the storytelling. Nancy Farmer is a storyteller like no other. I don’t remember the last time I was so invested in and scared to continue reading a book. The sheer suspense and pacing of the story were done just perfectly. I couldn’t stop turning the page, but at the same time, I didn’t want to know what would happen next. I was genuinely terrified that Matt was going to die. Part of it was the genre of this book, and part of it was the perfectly anxiety-inducing plot progression, but I don’t think I’ve ever been so convinced that a character was going to die. Usually when I read thrillers or action novels, I’m relaxed because the protagonist’s plot armor will protect them from anything. This was not the case for The House of the Scorpion, to my genuine surprise and fright. (I’m not telling you if Matt dies or not. Muahahaha.)
Anyway, that looming sense of dread made the book’s bittersweet ending hit so much harder. I won’t tell you why it was bittersweet for me, because I think this book needs to be experienced completely authentically. I’ll just say that even though it was sad, I was ultimately really surprised and happy that Farmer gave us a somewhat happy ending. I was preparing myself for an emotionally damaging ending, like the ones in 1984 and Animal Farm, so I appreciate that Farmer ended the novel on a hopeful note. I think writing happy endings for dystopian novels is such an important thing, because the point of dystopian novels is, often, “if we don’t fix this issue in the present then a terrible thing will happen.” But giving all of these books terribly hopeless endings really doesn’t do much to inspire people to act. Seeing my favorite characters rise back up stronger and more determined than before, despite all of the awful things they endured, gave me hope for humanity.
Overall, just go read The House of the Scorpion. It’s such a good piece of writing, and a combination of all the things I love most in books: a dystopian setting, slightly twisted characters, commentary on the world, and well-done suspense. I would recommend this book for people who are looking for thought-provoking, complex ideas and who don’t mind mild violence and fear. I guarantee that if you finish it, even if you don’t like it, you will have learned something profound about the world or about yourself.
~Tania

Bronski Beat and Pet Shop Boys' Neil remix gay classic Why?
New Post has been published on https://qnews.com.au/bronski-beat-and-pet-shop-boys-neil-remix-gay-classic-why/
Bronski Beat and Pet Shop Boys' Neil remix gay classic Why?
Bronski Beat have remixed their hit Why? with new vocals from Pet Shop Boys frontman Neil Tennant.
This year is the 40th anniversary of Bronski Beat’s iconic gay anthems Smalltown Boy and Why? as well as the band’s debut album The Age of Consent.
Why? was the British synthpop band’s second hit of 1984 and highlighted violence and prejudice against gay people. The band dedicated the song to gay playwright Drew Griffiths, who was murdered that year.
Bronski Beat vocalist Jimmy Sommerville is the last surviving member of the group’s original lineup.
This week, he released a new remix of Why? from DJ Tom Stephen, aka Superchumbo, which reworks the song and includes new spoken word vocals from the Pet Shop Boys’ Neil Tennant.
“I’ve known Tom a good few years now and when I asked him if he’d like to do a remix of Why? he said yes straight away,” Jimmy said.
“The song is a part of his story. I was so moved when he shared that story with me.
“The lyric is our shared experience as it is for so many others… and forty years later the lyric still tells the story of LGBTQI+… the hate, the violence, the discrimination, the imprisonment and state-sanctioned murder of those who dare to be their true selves.
“It’s happening somewhere right now as I write this.”
youtube
Neil Tennant joins Bronski Beat’s Why? remix
Tom said after he’d finished the new version, Jimmy requested the inclusion of a few more of the song’s lyrics.
“I’d recently watched a Pet Shop Boys documentary where Neil Tennant read some of his lyrics, which moved me to tears,” Tom explained.
“I imagined Neil speaking these lyrics, creating a powerful contrast.
“I left Neil a voicemail on my way to a gig abroad. By the time I reached Heathrow Airport, I had his vocals on my phone, added them to the track on my flight, and played it that night!”
Jimmy said hearing what Tom had done was “mind-blowing”.
“To hear Neil, one of our greatest pop lyricists speaking my words… I was f__king whooping like a banshee around my kitchen,” he said.
“When Tom told me Neil would like to contribute and speak the lyrics of Why? and to hear Tom’s musical reworking of the track is f__king mind-blowing.
“It brings it into the here and now and also retains its history with my original vocals. I genuinely felt moved.”
Bronski Beat’s debut album The Age of Consent in 1984 was unapologetically and overtly about queer rights. The album’s title referenced the inequal age of consent for same-sex relationships at the time.
The lead single Smalltown Boy told the story of a young man forced out of his homophobic hometown, seeking acceptance in the city.
Remixes of that song by producers ABSOLUTE. and Planningtorock dropped in May.
Pet Shop Boys released new music in April
Meanwhile, the Pet Shop Boys released their latest album Nonetheless in April.
Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe let slip at the time that they’re “in discussions” about a possible Australian tour, their first in many years.

welcome to do you know this book poll!
about:
This blog was inspired by RecommendMeABook.com—which posts first pages of novels before revealing the title and author—and by poll blogs such as doyoulikethissong-poll. The main goal of this blog is to expose people to books that they might like and read through posting snippets of different books.
how this works:
I post polls with excerpts from books—occasionally I post excerpts from novellas and short stories. Polls run for one week, so results are posted eight days after the original post date. Part of the fun is guessing/trying to figure out which book the excerpt is from, with some excerpts being more obvious than others. Feel free to leave suggestions for books you want to see posted (or suggestions for the blog in general) in the replies of this post 😊📚
I am one person running this blog so please be patient and kind. I currently post 1-3 polls per week.
submissions are now open, submit a book here!
current voting options:
A) I’ve read this book before, and I like it!
B) I can tell which book this is from based on this excerpt, but I haven't read it

Blog 10: Books from the 00's
I'm reading Late Bloomer by Fern Michaels, you can rely on her for that fantasy of suddenly becoming very rich. In this book Cadwell Jordan moves back to her hometown to take care of her retired actress grandmother, who gets a lot better just by having her in her life again after raising her for 3 years when her parents fled after a mysterious accident. It's kind of like It I guess with no clown and 300 pages, I mean I think it should be longer. I mean I know saying "why isn't a reverse harem of Bev Ed, Ned, and Fred" it's like well, it simply isn't that! Get a grip! Read the summary! When they said "oh, and Ed is single too," they were kidding! I tried Name of the Wind but I might not continue it. I picked up Dead Until Dark Again and it's funny how different the second half is from the first half! Well I actually started this in March, um, and it's a bit too action packed, it sort of feels like 3 unrelated plots are happening, typical reality for someone like Sookie Stackhouse, the murder equivalent of your cat getting sick again as there is a new hire at work and you've lost your flipflops. to make any sense due to the long stretches of time I've inserted into it, the romance is cute.
Dead Until Dark fits the prompt of "building on the cover" (the burning down vampire house ;; from September 2022 Bookopoly, which I was running for myself this month, because I still have the board and it's fun. Well you know what Becca just announced: Spookoplothon, October Bookoplothon! And wouldn't you know it Dead Until Dark fits the parallel prompt on the new board: purple!
I'm also reading Darius the Great is Not Okay, and I keep crying about it. It's about highschool stuff like feeling left out and trying to talk to your dad. It is not a stupid 00's book. And I have the sequel!
On Friday I went swimming, which really was great. I'm always complaining now, this week, yesterday, because it's only high 80's. Which is very hot in the sun, on a calm, still day, with increasing humidity. Is that good swimming weather? It's not the weather I'm complaining about, it's how much work goes into swimming. Changing, getting towels, getting drinks, drying off, and so on... Also, I prepared wrongly for this summer. This week in particular, last year, was 110 and on fire, and I was very stressed out because I didn't want to have to evacuate all the animals alone. In June it was 80's and always rained and I basically threw that away, sleeping through it. And this week it's finally back to 80's. It was only 105 those two days I made sure to complain about it.
On Saturday I picked up another book by F. Paul Wilson for Halloween to pair with Midnight Mass a friend gave me. This book is The Tomb, it's like Three For The Money which I read last week, instead of bounty hunters it's a PI looking for, so far, a creepy looking necklace and a missing person his ex's mother. I think PI's dislike cops more bounty hunters but cops get in the way of either. It is dissimilar in that it's from 1984 and Three To Get Deadly is from the 00's.
On Sunday I had stewed pork. On Monday I watched the big game. On Tuesday I swung by Friends of the Library to get Wicked Business because I liked Three To Get Deadly alright and so I'm giving Lizzie and Diesel another shot. Basically this week is all about stupid books from the 00's. Incredibly I have a book about the Millenium Meltdown of computers bricking themselves (or worse) at midnight on 2000, but the kicker is it's from 1998 so it's not about the hysteria, it's just conspiracy theories about microchips, I'll have to start that too since some of these books are actually on the cusp.
Weirdly I'm set up nicely to try that challenge I had of reading (finishing) one book a day, maybe start on the 15.

flash floods
so i'm currently writing this from ny's computer and buttery keyboard. i was trying to log in to my tumblr but i had forgotten which email was associated to. so i tried a few and i ended up on an old account, reading my old private blog from high school that... it was just so strange to read. i was really unhappy in high school, holy moly. looking back on the posts are all the same, like feeling isolated, stressed from school, uncared for by my friends, critical of my friends, hating of myself, etc. it's so weird. so so so weird. i was very lost and blaming everyone including myself. that blog was a place to vent and i... i never imagined that i would be reading those entries from such a different mental space?
writing is interesting because it's simultaneously a release and a record. release because we can vent by writing things out, but then a record because, well, it's recorded. and something about a record feels like a keepsake which is the opposite of release.
usually i read about one book per year. last year, the books were sour heart by jenny zhang and 1984 by george orwell. this year, the one book has been never let me go by kazuo ishigurou. i might get bored of his style if i read more of his books, but wow am i love in with this book. such a beautiful book. that book covers so many topics relevant to modernity. kind of relates with the release/record duality but moreso in the... challenging fate vs. accepting fate duality.
last week i was pretty stifled in many ways. physically it was hot as hell and i had an AC but not a fan. and the rattling from the AC was truly unbearable. and the air quality was like 170+ from the wildfires and.. my stupid window slid open! so i was frustrated for many reasons, so much so that i actually went to the school gym to run. on a treadmill. i hate treadmills lol.
i was also stifled in terms of... being frustrated and mean to myself about all my work.
i couldn't figure out my bug in the pyro code and i kept on telling myself that everyone else could figure out the code but only i couldn't and i was behind. turns out everyone suffered some major bug.
i kept on putting off the data science project work and just guilt tripping myself about it?
stress about resume edits.
i'm balancing a bunch of stuff tbh. this summer is research, research group, data science project, internship application preparation... and i also gotta start studying for prelims! i'm trying to just rush this data science project because it might be the easiest thing to finish and put an end to stressing about.
one thing about living alone is that i get to have total say over everything i do. which means things like being excessively stingy when i don't need to be. so here i will try to challenge that and manifest: treating myself out weekly to meals; cooking nutritious and filling meals. i think i will try a week long yoga trial that comes with unlimited classes. and then i'll just go like every other day to make the most bang for my buck. i think doing an exercise subscription might be good. or like a planned weekly food truck lunch so i walk to campus. basically, i am learning that it is not entirely good for me to be alone by myself for most of the day.
i've been listening to music, improving my texting, doing yoga, ....

Sooooo..... this one hundred days thingy....
It's been forgotten. I'm sorry. I've failed the world. Buuhuu.
On another note, I HAVE actually been slightly productive most days, so here's a list of something's I've done:
I studied for the entirety of last week, like actually (I made an hourly plan for every single day and I FOLLOWED it. I don't remember if I wrote about this last time I posted, probably, but I'm proud so reptition is fine).
I had my Extended Essay meeting with my supervisor and it not only cleared things up in terms of the essay hut also my future (!) (She shared some ideas towards the next few years in terms of literary and creative writing courses).
I've read half of the book for Swedish class in two days which is exciting (It's even good!).
I took a walk out of my own free will in the ice cold temperatures of a snowy evening in Sweden (I froze half to death but it was quite pleasant).
Also, I managed to catch this very cool moment which was fun:
Overall, the last few days have been less productive than those of last week, but I've done some things, and for that I'm proud.
For the upcoming weekend I plan to do the following (I'm hoping sharing this will hold me accountable):
Finish my history IA
Finish reading Kejsaren av Portugallien for my Swedish class.
Work on my Biology IA.
Continue reading 1984 for my English class.
Construct a clarified skeleton for my soon-to-be rearranged extended essay to send to my supervisor.
Day 9/100
Snow appeared and I'm now experiencing the true Christmas spirit, so here are some songs for you (one in Swedish and one in English; I'm spoiling you):

100 books - german edition
I got tagged by @sorrel-ly! Thank you ;)
again, just copying the text:
After going through the BBCs list of the 100 books I thought it was only fair to look at the German version. The project “Das große Lesen” was led by the German public-service TV station ZDF in 2004. They preselected a list of books and then asked 250,000 German readers which books they would classify as bestsellers/important books one should have read.
Here is the list. Bold the ones you’ve read or italic the ones on your reading list. (P.S. Feel free to add the English title if I didn’t find it and marked it as “not translated”)

Süskind - Das Parfum / The Perfume A. de Saint-Exupéry - Der kleine Prinz / The Little Prince T. Mann – Buddenbrooks / Buddenbrooks N. Gordon - Der Medicus / The Physician P. Funke - Tintenherz / Inkheart D. Gabaldon - Feuer und Stein / The Outlander I. Allende - Das Geisterhaus / The House of Spirits B. Schlink - Der Vorleser / The Reader JW von Goethe - Faust. which makes: 26 read, 15 to read (I think)
yeah I’m a little disappointed about no Dürrenmatt (and Schiller for that matter) and Thomas Mann being the only Mann. seriously Klaus and Heinrich are way more fun to read? (and Harry Potter 5??? seriously?? Eva have they asked you? :P)
I’m tagging @kaiserskleider, @waldwasser and if any of my german speaking followers are up to it you could tag me? ;)
#german stuff#I got tagged.#personal#books#also I finished reading 1984 like last week#and it was so good
