Camelove Day 7: Free Day
Reincarnated AU Part 7: Arthur & Merlin
It has been thirty-nine days since his talk with Anhora. Thirty-nine days since he was told that friends and foes alike, have been walking the same earth as him for years! Waiting for Arthur’s return (though not nearly as long as he has been waiting).
Six weeks since Daegal told him about the odd dream he had and five since Lance & Gwaine invited him over for dinner and told him they been having the same dreams and wondered if he been having them too.
Two months since he ran into Lamia of all people at a club and four since Elyan knocked over his beer at the pub.
Roundly half a year since Mithian treated him for his migraine at the hospital. She and Elyan showed up at his flat last week full of questions. Merlin had tried his best to answer them all, but everything still feels so surreal. He has been waiting, trying to prepare himself for this moment for centuries, but no one told him that Arthur wouldn’t be the only one coming back. Bloody typical of magical folk.
Now every time Merlin leaves his flat he looks for him. When he walks down the street. On the underground. In every shop and restaurant, he looks for Arthur. His heart hasn’t calmed down since Anhora told him. Every second of every day he wonders, ‘Is it today? Will he finally see Arthur again today?’
He was walking home when it happened. He looked down at his mobile for barely a minute when he ran straight into him.
He saw Arthur’s paper to-go cup hit the sidewalk before he saw Arthur’s face. Merlin just stood there staring, listening to Arthur groan in annoyance. He hadn’t looked up at Merlin yet, more focused on grabbing his spilled coffee.
Merlin took a deep breath and tried to prepare himself. Everyone else hadn’t remembered until after they met him, he knew this but the idea that Arthur looking into his eyes and not knowing who he was killed him.
It had been only a few seconds since he ran into Arthur. Since the once king leaned down to grab his cup off the ground but it seemed like time was moving so painfully soon.
Arthur finally stood up, his mouth open in a clear frown ready to tell Merlin off, no doubt but then he finally looked at Merlin. He looked at Merlin like he was dreaming and called out his name like a prayer. “Merlin?”
“Arthur?” And then Merlin was laughing. He was laughing so joyfully he was crying and Arthur was wrapping his arms around him. He was holding him so tightly as if Arthur feared that Merlin would run off if he let go. Merlin squeezed him just as tightly.
“Arthur how? How is it you remember me? I thought- you’re not supposed to remember me right off?” A nervous laugh choking out at the last part.
Arthur pulled away just enough that he could look into Merlin’s eyes and flashed that stupid obnoxious smile that Merlin loved so much. “Don’t need to remember if I’ve never forgotten.”
Merlin is equal parts furious and frustrated because that was not what Anhora had told him! But Arthur is chuckling in his ear and so instead he sighs and asks him if he knows why they brought him back. Arthur shakes his head, “No but I’m sure we’ll figure it out.”
He nods and presses his forehead against Arthur’s. He’s not ready to let go yet, so he instead says the words he’s been wanting to say since the second he saw him. “Thank you.”
Thank you for finally coming back to me.
