Had a MOMENT as a Disney collector and I am SCREAMING.
Warning: talking about the haunting of Song of the South - read at your own risk.
I found out Spanish copyright laws allow Song of the South to be public domain over there, and happened to snag a blu ray copy that works on a U.S. player.
Why did I buy it? I am currently going through a Disney Production Process hyperfixation. It happens every decade or so; it’s not important.
Here’s what’s crazy: I’d only seen this movie once, and I think it was just the Briar Rabbit bits with Zip Ah Dee Do Dah mixed in. It’s bugged me on and off for years that they just refuse to release this movie, and I never understood WHY - even through their different loyalty channels (D23; Disney Movie Club; Disney Movie Insiders, etc.), this movie just wasn’t available.
And I finally got fed up when I watched The Reluctant Dragon on Disney +, which is terribly sexist and has racist characatures, but is given value on the channel because it is wonderfully educational on the Disney film process and is basically a commercial for Walt’s multi-plane camera. Meanwhile, Song of the South contained amazing insertion of animation into live action that would really struggle to be seen again for YEARS, and we’re ignoring it?!!?
I get, like, all the politics, but with how stubborn so many fans are, not to mention how devoted Disney Corp is to Walt’s bigger projects, I ask again, WE’RE IGNORING IT?!
So anyway, I buy the Spanish version of the film, throw on the English audio, and hit play to find out what’s SO BAD about this movie that Disney’s willing to just abandon it.
…..I made it maybe ten minutes in. Holy shit, this movie’s cursed. This movie’s UNMARKETABLE.
And it’s not cursed for the reasons you’d think - I haven’t gotten through the movie yet, but unless there are hints that someone gets physically punished at some point, this movie’s pretty on-par with similar ones of its kind in that time period. Also, it opened some doors to show more kids an accurate history of the source of the Briar Rabbit stories, which is something Disney could spin EASILY.
Yeah, sure, the Georgia premier was a dumb choice - but James Baskett’s rendition of Zip Ah Dee Do Dah was so beloved, it could have easily overshadowed the premier drama with time.
No, the depiction of race isn’t why this movie’s completely unmarketable.
This movie’s unmarketable because the other star is BOBBY FUCKING DRISCOLL, IN WHAT SEEMS TO BE HIS FIRST DISNEY ROLL AND ACTING HIS LITTLE HEART OUT.
You CAN’T watch this movie without wondering who this little boy is, and looking him up will break your heart. HE haunts this story.
Disney and James Baskett were on great terms for the rest of Baskett’s life if I understand correctly- Walt even pushed for him to get an academy award. Like that controversy can be spun - it can be propaganda’d to be seen in other lights.
But you can’t propaganda your way out of the way Disney and the rest of Hollywood abandoned Bobby.
#also Bobby’s parents didn’t help with pulling him out of that school so fast#I think that’s a big chunk of it#but 0 people kept up with that kid#and abandoned him at his most vulnerable time#a fucking unmarked grave holy cow

oooo secret caretaking pls <3
Secret caretaking has been answered here, may I tempt you instead with food poisoning? Eddie eats some slightly sketchy leftovers (Buck warned him not to) the day before he turns 35 and faces the consequences. Fic would open on mostly the aftermath of that, Buck home from the shift Eddie had to skip and talking on the phone with Bobby updating him that Eddie’s feeling mostly better and should be up for the party tomorrow. Eddie’s grumpy (he doesnt even like birthday parties for himself anyway) (his tummy hurts) (buck’s making fun of him) and they’re, you know, buck and Eddie and dumb and flirty and sappy while they go to sleep. In the morning he only half wakes up when Buck takes Chris to school, fully wakes up with no one in the house and decides he wants a greasy fast food burger (fuck you tummy) (its his birthday he can do what he wants).
When he gets back from that journey he notices Chimney’s car is there, he and Maddie were going to come over to help with party set up, and he kind of wishes it was just going to be him and Buck for a while because he still kinda feels like shit and also it is his birthday and he’d like some time alone with his hot boyfriend but. Whatever. Walks into the kitchen and Buck tries to say something but Eddie just walks up and kisses him and Bucks like a little frantically wide eyed and says they have guests and Eddie’s like fuck Maddie and Chimney they can avert their delicate eyes and goes in for another kiss but Buck like physically turns his head to look to the kitchen table and Helena and Ramon are sitting there. Eddie (still hasn’t come out to his parents) (was kissing buck) (he’s too recently food poisoned for all of this) is like…………………………… hi mom and dad………………………………… what are you doing here……………………………….. the family party isn’t till Sunday……………………………………
Turns out they decided to come in early to at least say hi on his actual birthday and are now like. Why didn’t you tell us about this. Why didn’t you tell us about any of this? I thought we were doing better I thought you trusted us? Why are you keeping this part of your life from us? Because it seems pretty fucking serious, Buck was here alone and answered the door like he owns the place. Unless this is just some fling? And Eddie (he was FOOD POISONED like YESTERDAY) (it’s his fucking birthday) is like no. No i’m so fucking serious about this. I’m going to marry this man.
And Buck looks like weirdly upset about this and Eddie puts together that he thinks he’s just saying that to prove some point to his parents and Eddie’s like fuck. Oh my god. Stop that. And he opens a kitchen drawer and pulls out the velvet box he hid there (like 3 fucking weeks ago) and is like how have you not used the cheese grater ONCE in the last month. I hid it next to your most used utensil. You were going to pull it out while making dinner it was going to be so romantic. And buck is like (weakly) I’ve been enjoying the texture that the microplane gives the Parmesan. And Eddie’s like (dreadfully in love) (god he wants to lay down) you’re so fucking weird. The cheese grater literally has a side that does that. And Buck’s like yes. Yes I’ll marry you.
And Eddie’s like somehow surprised by that and Buck’s like crying laughing and says I’m so sorry mr and Mrs Diaz please just look away and kisses him, and Eddie’s like okay cool i feel like shit I’m going to go eat this stupid burger in my bed (fries are cold by now) (cold fries are disgusting) (he’s not happy about it). Mom dad you can stay for the party if you want. Or not. Bye. And Maddie and Chimney who have just been here witnessing all this are like. Hysteric. Gleeful. Absolutely texting several group chats rapid fire updates. Buck follows to check on him a few minutes later and they’re sappy again and and Buck says happy birthday before heading back out. The end!

“Get! Up!” your father pulled the blanket off of you at what felt like the literal crack of dawn. “Oh my god, what do you want from me?” you groan, rolling onto your back. Chim stood there with a cup of coffee and a plate of pancakes.
“Breakfast” he smiles, setting the mug on the bedside table and handing the plate to you. “Thank you” you mumble, mouthful of pancakes. He hums and kisses the top of your head before taking a seat at the edge of the bed.
“What time are your classes done today ? I was thinking we could get dinner, I'm off at 6″
“First class is at 8:30 and I think the last one is at 2 so I should be done around 4-4:30, I can just call you when I'm off ?”
“Sounds good, I’m leaving now. Be safe and text me when you get to school okay ?” He gets up, you nod.
“I’m not a baby anymore, I can take care of myself you know.” you tell him “You’ll always be my baby though” he kisses your head once again and heads out. You lay back in bed when you hear the front door shut.
The last few months have been a bit of a whirlwind. Your mother, who you were living with up until recently, decided to up and leave you because she needed to ‘find herself’
You couldn't believe this woman. 18 years old and all she left you was a note and a name. The note wasn't very helpful but it did drop a rather large bomb on you. This was what she decided to leave you with,
“My dearest y/n,
I needed some time to myself. You have always been the main focus in my life and you’ve reached an age where you can take care of yourself. If you do find yourself needing help, seek out this man.
His name is Howard Han, though I hear he goes by Chimney these days. He’s your father. He’ll take care of you, I promise.
Love you always and wishing you well on all your future endeavours.
Yours always,
Mom.”
Yup, the father you grew up thinking didn't want you or never existed, did in fact exist but just didn't know that you existed. So when you showed up at his apartment in the middle of the night with your bags and note in hand, it was a bit of a shock. He remembered your mother well, he didn't realize that she was pregnant when she vanished from his life. She was the one that didn’t want him to know about you, he would have loved the chance to help raise you. Although he had missed the first 18 years, he’s making up for it now.
--
The day went by rather fast, your last class was cancelled due to your professor just not “being in the mood to teach” according to the email. You texted your father to see what he was up to.
To Dad: My class was canceled. I’m probably gonna head home, do you want me to make a reservation for dinner or are we cooking ?
From Dad: Anything’s fine. Your pick, just let me know
You were on your way home when you passed by the station, deciding that you’d surprise him at work, you pulled into the parking lot. The fire station was quiet as you walked in, there were 2 trucks parked and an empty space that you assumed was supposed to have an ambulance. It sounded like someone was having a conversation upstairs so you headed up the stairs.
The older man by the stove noticed you first. There were two more men there, a blonde and a brunette. “Hi,” he wiped his hands on the towel as he walked over to you, “Captain Bobby Nash” he smiled. “I’m y/n” you introduced yourself, Bobby glances back at the two men by the counter, “that’s Buck and Eddie” they both wave.
“What can we help you with?”
“I'm looking for my dad, he works here”
“Who’s your dad ?”
“Oh chi-” “y/n?” your dad called for you, causing you to turn around.
“Hey dad”
The two men and the woman beside him all go “dad?” simultaneously. Your father stands there with a smile on his face before nodding, “yeah, dad. This is my kid, y/n” he smiles, his arm around your shoulder. “She’s like 20″ Buck gawked, his mouth hung open and head tilted in confusion.
“18, but close enough” you corrected him. “I hope I'm not interrupting anything, I was just stopping by because I'm out of class for the day”
“It's fine, you're welcomed here anytime” Bobby smiles at you. Everyone had made themselves comfortable on the couches, your father, you and Hen sitting on one while Bobby sat on the other one. Eddie and Buck sat on the arm handles of the 3 seater.
“How long were you planning on keeping her a secret ?” Buck speaks up, his attention on Chimney. “It wasn't a secret Buckaroo, I just didn’t think the middle of the week was the right time to tell you guys that I had a daughter.” he chuckled. The sound of heels clicking against the concrete echoed through the station.
“Chim?!” a woman’s voice called out, your father gets up and follows her voice down the stairs. The team exchanges glances, to the stairs, to you and back to each other. “Am I missing something ?” you ask, Buck nods towards Hen and you move to the middle of the couch and he slides down next to you. His arm rests on the back of the chair as he looks over at you.
“That’s Maddie, my sister” he says quietly, trying to gauge if you knew who that was.
“Is she friends with dad or ?” your sentence trials off, looking back at the man next to you.
“They’re dating. He didn’t tell you?”
“Well no, but I assumed there was someone,” you chuckle, “he left his schedule on the fridge and he comes home like 3-4 hours after he’s off, plus he’s all giggly and happy so that makes sense” you explain. You get up and walk towards the railing of the balcony, your father is talking to Maddie.
Maddie was gorgeous, shoulder length brown hair, brown eyes and a stunning smile. She radiated an energy that was undeniably angelic, it was obvious to you that they loved each other from the way they were smiling at each other. His hand reached for hers before he spun her around, you couldn't help but smile.
“Are you gonna go down and introduce yourself ?” Buck walks over, he leans onto the railing beside you. “Did anyone ever tell you that you're kind of nosy,” glancing down at his name tag, “Buckley ?” your head tilts to the side as you smile at the man beside you. He lets out a laugh, “yeah, Eddie tells me all the time but I like to think it adds to my lovableness” humming and looking down at the pair, Chimney was telling Maddie something, a rather serious expression on both of them. Soon enough, they both look up at the balcony where you and Buck were.
“Guessing he told her” he chimes in, you roll your eyes. “Really ? You think so ?” snickering, Buck pats your shoulder and leaves you by the railing. Your father gives you a look you know all too well and you make your way down the stairs to him and Maddie.
Smiling at the woman beside your father, you introduce yourself. “Hi, I’m y/n. You must be Maddie”
“I am, it’s nice to meet you” she returns the smile. There’s a pause in the conversation, the tension starting to build. This was definitely awkward.
“I know this is a little weird for you,” breaking the silence, you pull out your phone to check the time. “it’s weird for me too- but um, why don’t you come to dinner with us ?” you glance over at your father who was looking at Maddie. She gives you a smile, glancing back over at Chimney.
“I couldn't intrude on your time with your dad”
“No, please. It’s fine, it’d be nice to have someone else around. Plus, it gives us a chance to get to know each other a little better”
“Are you sure ?” she asks, you nod.
“Is 7 okay for you ?”
“7 is perfect”
--
Dinner went smoothly but there was still some awkwardness. That was mostly caused by your father because he hadn't told you that he was going to be home and that he was going to have Maddie over. So when you came home early from work to find them making out on the couch, it became a little weird.
It was Saturday and Maddie invited you out to get your nails done with her, a girls day without the pressure of your father being there and saying what he wanted to hear.
“Are you sure you’re gonna be okay ?” Chim asks Maddie, you can hear them from your bedroom. She laughs, “babe, she’s a teenager, not a murderer. We’ll be fine” her comment causes a little chuckle. One last look in the mirror before you walk into the kitchen, “hey” you smile and give her a hug which she returns.
“Hey, you ready ?” she asks, picking her keys up as Chimney unwraps his arm from around her. You give her a nod and head to the door where you put your shoes on. The two of them were saying their goodbyes in the kitchen, the smooching sound from their kiss echoed through the kitchen. You gagged jokingly, Maddie laughed while your father told you to grow up playfully. He walked Maddie over to the door, “be good” he warned you.
“Dad,” you whined, “I'm not a baby, god. I can behave” you rolled your eyes, Chim grinned and pressed a kiss to your cheek.
“I’ll see the two of you for lunch ?”
“Yeah, we’ll be back later.” Maddie gave him a hug before stepping out with you.
The two of you spent the day, it went by rather fast. At the nail salon, you told her about your mother and how you ended up connecting with your father in the first place.
“She really made you think that your father wanted nothing to do with you ?” the shock evident in Maddie’s voice. A little chuckle slipped past your lips, “yeah, she did. I mean, she gave me everything I wanted but having a dad that was present would have been nice, you know ?”
“Then she just upped and left you ? No offence but is she okay ?”
An obnoxiously loud laugh left your mouth, the other women in the salon looking at you. Mumbling a sorry, you turn back to Maddie, “it depends on when you catch her. She’s okay most of the time but those few off days, she was kind of bat shit crazy but she's my mother” you shrug. Maddie said she understood, her parents weren't exactly her best friends either. She told you how she left home when she was young and how she rushed into a marriage that she regretted. She didn’t go into full details but you could tell that it was a touchy subject and that it wasn't a good time in her life so you didn’t pry. It was nice that she felt comfortable enough to share that with you.
----
*A Few Months Later*
“Maddie! Where are my shoes? Dad said he put them by the front door but they're not here” you groan, sitting on the floor in defeat. It was Bobby’s birthday and Athena had put together a party for him. The 3 of you were running late and you couldn't find your shoes anywhere. Sure, you had other pairs but that specific pair matched your outfit.
“Have you checked the closet sweetie ?” she shouted back from the bedroom. Getting off the floor, you walk to the closet and tumble through the shoe rack. “I can't find them!” you groan once again.
“Kid, why are you complaining? What’s wrong?” Chimney asks as he enters the kitchen, pulling the tray of cupcakes that Maddie made from the fridge. “My shoes. Where'd you put them ?” you ask, he pauses. “Um, my bedroom ? I think ? I thought they were-” you cut him off as you grumble and make your way into the room.
“Did you find them ?” her back was turned to you, fixing her hair in the mirror.
“Dad said the closet. He thought they were yours” you mumble and she laughs.
“He can't tell the difference, I swear”
Looking through the closet, you finally find them buried in a corner. “Found them” you smile and pull them on. “Lemme see” She turns to you and you do a little spin for her.
“Gorgeous” she smiles, “says you. That dress is so cute”
The two of you walk out of the bedroom to find Chimney sitting on the couch. “Why do girls take so long to get ready ?” he questions, looking back at the two of you. “Oh hush, you just finished getting ready too” Maddie walks over and sits beside him.
“You two do realize we’re 40 minutes late right ?”
With that, the 3 of you head out together. The drive to Bobby and Athena’s was only a few minutes, Athena was just glad that you finally showed up. She pulled Maddie and Chim off to the backyard to see Bobby, you promised to join them after you got a drink. Walking to the kitchen, you find your favourite little guy and his dads, well his dad and his dad’s best friend in the kitchen together.
“Hey you,” you smile at Chris as you lean down to give him a hug. “Y/n!” he grinned at you. “How are you ?” you ask Christoper, you offer him a cupcake from the tray that Maddie made and he accepts happily. “I’m good” he gives you another smile before turning his attention to the cupcake in his hand. Chris gets some frosting on his face so he and Eddie go off to find a napkin, leaving you in the kitchen with your favourite firefighter.
“Buckley” you smile at him,
“Han” he returns the smile. “The three of you are late, you know that right ?”
“Hm thanks for pointing out the obvious Buck” you chuckle and he smiles. “I couldn't find my shoes and then Dad took forever in the shower. Mom said my shoes were in the closet but they weren't so I was on a hunt to find them and then she couldn't pick what she wanted to wear. Anyways, it was a whole mess but we’re here now” you sigh, accepting the cup Buck handed to you. Buck had an amused look on his face, your face twisted into a look of confusion.
“What is it ? Oh is there frosting in my face?” the back of your hand coming up to wipe your cheek. Buck shook his head, “you called Maddie mom” he chuckles, you pause and replay what you said to Buck just moments ago in your head. A little laugh passing your lips, “I guess I did.” Chimney shouts for you from the backdoor, letting you know that they’re cutting the cake so you and Buck head into the yard together.
The afternoon went by rather quickly, the 3 of you were some of the last to leave. Buck hung back to help Athena and Bobby tidy up. When you arrived home, you were so tired, you could barely function. Kicking off your shoes by the door, you make your way straight to the bedroom. Changing and getting into bed, your body sunk into the soft mattress, your comforter on top of you and the fan spinning, you about to have a good night’s sleep.
A knock on your door and footsteps into your room, your dad sits at the edge of your bed. “You okay kid ?” he asks quietly, you hum as you were too tired to verbally answer him. He chuckles, patting your leg before getting up. “Sleep well kiddo” he leaves your room.
Once more, there’s a knock on the door, it's Maddie this time. She walks in and fixes your blanket, tucking in the edges by the side. “Just wanted to say goodnight” she smiles, your eyes ever so slightly open to see her standing in front of you. Maddie brushes some of your hair away from your face, “goodnight sweetie” she says softly, you hum before answering her, “night mom” mumbling as you turn onto your side. A faint gasp like noise slips past Maddie’s lips, she stares adoringly at the girl who was now sleeping. She steps out and shuts your door, walking into the room at the end of the hall where she finds her boyfriend sitting on the bed.
“Why do you look so happy ?” he asks her, glancing up at her from his book.
“Y/n just called me mom” she whispers in disbelief, afraid that if she says it too loudly that it won’t be true. Chimney shut the book, his attention solely on the woman standing across from him,
“She did ?” he smiled at her
“She did.” she smiled back at him.

IN LIFE, IN DEATH...
PART NINE
:Masterlist:
Warnings: swearing
A/N: It’s Unsaid Emily time, folks. Also sorry this took me forever to post, I’ve been sick. Feedback is always appreciated! <3
"This is fine."
You rambled quietly as you paced up and down Hollywood Boulevard.
The familiar sounds of the cars on the road and the conversations of people walking by calmed you down a little, but you were still dizzy trying to keep up with your own feet.
Alex, who was watching you carefully from a bus bench cleared his throat, making you stop in your tracks. "Was what I think was happening in there actually happening?"
"Yes." You said immediately. "No. Maybe? I don't know."
Alex stared at you for a minute before sighing deeply and pinching the bridge of his nose. "(Y/n), I mean this in the most loving way possible, but you need to get your shit together."
"What?" You sputtered. Alex was usually so sympathetic and understanding when it came to giving you advice, but as he took a deep breath and ran his hands through his hair, you prepared yourself for one of his 'big brother' lectures.
"I'm sorry, but you've been so disgustingly in love with each other your whole lives. Except you were the only one who realized it. Then that summer you guys were practically glued to each other, I thought that he finally figured it out too. I was just about to give Reg his twenty bucks..."
You shifted your weight as you thought back to that day at the beach, when you had stood there in the sand and let yourself think about what it would be like if Luke liked you back.
"But then he started ignoring you and being an idiot." Alex continued. "At first I thought that maybe he was just coming up with a way to tell you, but then it just never ended. It killed me to see how much it was hurting you, and I was all set to lock him in his guitar case."
You laughed a little at that and Alex smiled. “But judging by tonight, I think he realizes it now too.”
After spending so much time thinking Luke didn’t feel the same way, it was a reflex to try to deny it or come up with some excuse. But you realized that you really couldn’t anymore. You groaned loudly and plopped down on the bench.
“This isn’t fair.” You said. “I mean, I finally have an idea of what’s happening in his head just in time for us to die.. again.”
“That’s why you need to talk about it!’ Alex insisted. “Before anything else, you guys were best friends who told each other everything. Do you really want to cross over or whatever without telling him how you feel?”
Of course you didn’t. But you also didn't see the point of telling him if you were just going to disappear forever. What if you were misreading everything? Or what if you can’t figure out a way to play at the Orpheum and…?
You quickly pushed the thought out of your mind. You weren’t ready to think about any of that. With another groan, you leaned over onto Alex’s shoulder. “Al?”
“Yeah?”
“Do you think we’ll ever stop having boy problems?”
Alex laughed and you couldn’t help but join in. You wanted to pause this moment in time and just stay here with your best friend, far away from all your problems. But then there was a bright light and suddenly Willie was standing on the sidewalk in front of you.
“Alex, can we talk?”
You sat up straight and looked between the two of them, raising your eyebrows at Alex in a silent question. He nodded and you gave him a reassuring smile before poofing away.
-
You wandered around the city for a while before heading back to the garage, frowning when you found it empty.
You knew that Reggie was probably inside with Ray or Carlos but Luke was usually always here at this time of the day. You looked over to the table to see Luke’s songbook sitting open and you frowned in confusion. Luke had been extra secretive with his songs since Julie read them at practice, so it was weird for it to be out in the open for anyone to see.
As you went to close it, you saw that it was turned to ‘Unsaid Emily’. You ran your finger over the words, your heart flipping as you looked at his little notes and scribbles in the margins. It looked like the edges of the paper were blotted with tears.
You now figured that he was at his parent’s and your heart ached for him. It was obvious from the way he disappeared to their house every moment he could that he wanted to reconnect with them but you didn’t know it was this bad. Waves of guilt washed over you. You knew he wasn’t mad at you, but you still felt a little guilty about pushing so hard about Bobby when all Luke wanted was for his parents to be proud of him.
You got an idea and gently ripped out the page, knowing that there was a finalized version in your journal that Luke could have. But you knew that his parents having the version with his own handwriting and little notes as he workshopped it would be a lot more meaningful.
You folded it up and placed it in your pocket before poofing out of the garage and into the school hallway. You made a beeline for Julie's locker, getting there just in time to see Nick walking away with a blush and a triumphant smile.
Before you could even say a word, Julie put her phone to her ear and opened her mouth to scold you for showing up at her school again but she couldn't stop smiling long enough to get the words out.
"So, what did I miss?" You teased, making Julie roll her eyes.
"Nick might've just asked me out." She shrugged, trying to seem casual. "And I might've said yes."
You cheered and folded your arms. "I told you so."
"Shut up." Julie laughed and shoved her hand through the air next to your shoulder. "What are you doing here anyway?"
Your smile faded a little, having forgotten about your plan for a moment. You cleared your throat and carefully unfolded the paper to show Julie.
“I need your help.”
-
You and Julie walked side by side up the Patterson’s driveway.
You rubbed the page between your fingers and it seemed to get heavier in your hands with every step. You had been so sure that this plan would work but now you were actually here, you felt like this might be a bad idea.
You and Luke just got back to being friends again. Maybe even something more now after last night. The last thing you wanted to do was mess any of that up.
But you knew how much he missed his family. Even if he never said it out loud, you knew that he regretted leaving them more than anything.
Julie seemed to sense your thoughts and smiled at you reassuringly as you reached the porch. You handed Julie the paper as went to ring the doorbell. But before she could, Luke phased in front of the door.
“What are you guys doing here?” He asked, his eyes finding yours immediately.
Julie stepped forward a little. “I just, I wanted to know more about you guys so I asked (Y/n) to bring me here this time.”
“This time?” Luke repeated.
“We might’ve stopped by on your birthday.” She admitted.
“So you guys have been spying on me?” He scoffed at her. “After all your talks about boundaries?”
“This was my idea, Luke.” You explained, making him look over at you again. “I asked Julie to help because I’m worried about you.”
Luke’s jaw clenched slightly. “You don’t have to be.”
“Of course I do.” You said. “I understand. I know what it’s like to not be able to reach someone you love.”
Luke blinked rapidly, tears starting to brim in his eyes as he stared at you. He knew you were talking about your parents and Cece. But a little part of you meant him too, and how he had felt like a stranger to you for the better part of a year. “I wouldn’t even know what I’d say to her even if she could hear me.”
You pulled the song out of your pocket and smoothed out the paper before holding it out for him to see. “Maybe start with this.”
Luke instantly recognized it and there was a moment of heavy silence as he scanned the paper with his eyes before he slowly nodded. You handed it to Julie and pressed the doorbell, moving aside so she could stand on the welcome mat.
Luke fell back into the space next to you, watching the door with anticipation. A minute passed before it creaked open and Mitch stuck his head out. He greeted Julie and she introduced herself before clearing her throat.
“I believe you had a son named Luke?”
A look of pain crossed Mitch’s face but he nodded. “Yes, that’s right.”
“Your son’s band used to play in my family’s garage.” She said as she stroked the song between her fingers. “I came across this song that he wrote and I figured you might be interested.”
“Yes, of course.” Mitch opened the door and invited her in. You and Luke followed behind her closely. You looked all around the living room, smiling when your eyes fell on a picture that was propped up on a small table. It was taken on the day you both started high school. You were squishing Luke’s cheeks with your hand as he protested, although there was a bright smile on his face.
It warmed your heart to know that Emily had kept that picture after all this time. You looked back at Luke to see him already looking at you with an almost wistful look on his face.
Julie glanced at the picture before asking Mitch, “Do you have any other children?”
Mitch shook his head and the room got quiet for a second before Emily came in. “Did I hear the doorbell?”
Luke instantly tensed behind you, unconsciously taking a step back. You reached out and gave his hand a reassuring squeeze before letting so just as fast. But before it could even fall back to your side, Luke wrapped it back around his.
You held onto him a little tighter than necessary, keeping him as close to you as possible because you couldn't even imagine how hard this moment was for him. Emily gave Julie a warm smile as she tucked herself into Mitch’s side.
“Julie lives in the place where Luke and the band used to rehearse.” He clarified. “She was just telling me that she found a song he wrote.”
“Its about a girl named Emily.” Julie said as she looked down at the paper.
Emily gasped a little as she stepped forward slowly. “I’m Emily.”
“Then I think your son wrote this song for you.” Julie handed the song over and then stepped back slightly, giving them space to read it. The air became charged with emotion as they began crying, the paper shaking in Emily’s hands.
You knew the basics of what happened that night, but as you stood there, it was like a movie reel started playing and you could almost see Luke storming out, ignoring his mom calling out for him and running away until he got to the studio.
You remembered holding him in your arms later that night as he cried tears of frustration, sadness, and worry and before you knew it, you were doing it again. You dropped his hand and wrapped your arms around him and he immediately buried his head into your shoulder, sniffling quietly.
“Thank you.” You heard Emily say tearfully and you pulled away just enough to see her pressing the paper tightly against her chest.
Julie gave her a watery smile, wiping away tears of her own as she continued talking to them. Just as Emily laughed, Luke disappeared from your arms and you heard the sharp pop of him phasing away.
You looked at the spot where he was just standing and a part of you wanted to follow but you knew that he probably needed space. You followed Julie out the door and you walked beside each other in comfortable silence, each of you processing everything that just happened.
“Thank you for helping.” You said.
“Of course.” Julie smiled.
“So, when’s the date?” You teased as you wiggled your eyebrows.
“Remember what I said about shutting up?” She rolled her eyes but there was a bright smile on her face.
-
It was just after sunset when you got back to the house.
You couldn't remember the last time you had laughed as hard as you did when you were with Julie. It was still new to you, having a friend like her. You connected on so many levels and it only added to the guilt of keeping the secret about the stamps from her.
Just as you reached the walkway up to the front door, Julie nodded her head towards the porch where Luke was leaning against the railing. She mouthed ‘go’ before walking through the garden gate that led to the studio.
As soon as she was gone, you hopped up the stairs and cleared your throat. “I’m sorry. I know I overstepped and-”
“No, I just had to leave.” Luke stepped forward. “That was…I mean, how do you do that?”
“Do what?”
“You just always know what I need.” He said. “I never really had any regrets other than running out on them. I’ve been wanting to do something about it but I didn’t know how.”
You smiled. “You would’ve done the same for me.”
“Still,” Luke insisted. There was that look again. The same one that he gave you on stage, the one you saw last night just before Alex came in. The one he gave you the night he ran away. “Thank you.”
“You’re welcome.” You almost whispered, only now realizing how close you had gotten. Luke was only a few feet in front of you, and he looked almost nervous. Just as he stopped in front of you, a jolt flashed across his chest, sending him backward into a pillar.
He groaned and you winced in sympathy as you raced up to him. “Are you okay?”
Luke nodded, but he looked a lot paler than usual. “We’re running out of time.”
Just then, Julie came storming up the walkway, her fists clenched at her sides. She didn’t even bother looking at either of you as she marched up the stairs and disappeared behind the door.
“I’m guessing Alex and Reg told her.” You said and looked back at Luke to see him rubbing the sore spot on his chest. “Come on, let’s get you inside.”
Even before you walked through the doors, you could feel the cloud of sadness, guilt, and regret hanging in the air. You couldn’t imagine how Julie was feeling right now. She had just gotten back into music again after losing her mom and now she was losing more important people and her band all at once.
You walked Luke over to the couch and plopped on the ground next to the coffee table, watching absentmindedly as Alex tried to balance his drumsticks on his nose. Then trying not to laugh when Julie came storming in and he fell to the floor.
“I think you broke Alex.” Reggie said.
The scowl on Julie’s face didn’t falter, and she looked pointedly at each of you.
“Do you guys want to cross over or what?” She asked, her arms crossed as you all stayed quiet. “Get it together!”
“They’re never going to let us play the Orpheum.” Luke said. “We’re nobody.”
“Our video is going viral, that counts for something!” Julie insisted. “This isn’t over. We were brought together for a reason, to help each other.”
You found yourself nodding along with what she was saying, her enthusiasm eating away at the feeling of hopelessness you’d been carrying around. You could tell by the slight smile on Reggie and Luke’s faces that they felt the same way.
“Yeah, but like Luke said, people don’t just play the Orpheum because they want to.” Alex said.
“People don’t.” She agreed, a hint of a smirk on her face. “But ghosts do.”

December 1994
It was a rainy night in L.A.
The flashes of lightning and occasional roar of thunder echoed through the garage so loudly that any hope you had of focusing on studying was long gone.
You sighed and shoved your textbooks into your bag before leaning back on the couch and staring at the ceiling. The stress of studying had started to give you a headache but you felt a little more relaxed as you stared at white Christmas lights hung across the loft's railing.
There was a loud bang on the side of the building and for a second, you thought it was just another clap of thunder. But then the garage doors swung open.
You were frozen in fear for a moment before you made out Luke’s figure in the dim light. He didn’t seem to see you as he stormed in and threw his backpack on the ground, making its contents spill out. It wasn’t until you cleared your throat that he spun around with wide eyes.
“Hey.” You said. “What are you doing here so late?”
Luke's eyes held yours for a minute before he slowly crossed the room and climbed onto the couch next to you. He wiggled around until he was comfortable on his stomach with his head in your lap and his arms tucked under his chest.
“Rough day?” You asked, resisting the urge to laugh as he let out a deep breath and sank further into you. You could feel his pulse racing and his breath was uneven, like he just ran all the way from home.
You felt your stress from before disappear completely as you stared down at him. Ever since you realized your feelings for him, it was hard to not overthink these kinds of moments.
Before you could stop yourself, you reached a hand down and brushed his messy, slightly damp hair away from his forehead.
His breath hitched and you mentally cursed yourself.
It was no secret that Luke was a touchy person. Ever since you were kids, he had a habit of making people his personal pillow or just absentmindedly grabbing people’s hands and shoulders. But maybe this was a step too far.
Before you could pull away, Luke nuzzled his head back into your hand until you got the hint and softly ran your fingers through his hair. The sinking feeling in your stomach turned into butterflies and you cleared your throat.
“Seriously, you okay?” You whispered.
Luke being this quiet worried you. Normally he would be rambling on about a new song or complaining about school. But now he just seemed deflated.
You gripped his arm with your free hand, muttering a soft ‘hey’ until he finally turned over. His green eyes flickered open and you saw that they were bright red, along with his nose.
“Oh, Lu.” Your heart sank. “What happened?”
Luke shook his head, tucking the side of his face into your hand.
“You feel warm.” You said as felt his forehead with your other hand. “Luke, please tell me what happened?”
You knew that if he wanted to tell you, he would, and you shouldn't push him. But you had only seen Luke cry a handful of times in your life, and it always broke your heart.
It felt like hours before he finally spoke, his voice rough and heavy. “I ran away.”
“You-?”
A dozen emotions hit you all at once. The first being disbelief, then anger, then sympathy. Of course, you knew how much his parents not supporting his dream was killing him, and he had mentioned running away before. But you never thought he would actually go through with it.
“What happened?” You asked quietly.
“I failed another test.” Luke said as he sat up, his voice getting a little louder and tears returning to his eyes as he ranted. “I just spaced on studying and she freaked out, threatened to make me quit again or sell my guitar and I just kinda lost it. I tried, (Y/n), I just-”
“Okay, hey, it’s okay.” You ran your hand through his hair again in an attempt to calm him down. You would freak out about how very obvious you were acting later but he clearly had a fever and looked like he was about to start crying again. “You need to get some rest. We’ll figure everything out tomorrow, I promise.”
“Stay here with me?” He asked and your heart felt like it was going to beat out of your chest but you nodded.
“Yeah, of course.” You went to get up and get a sleeping bag from the loft so he could take the couch but his hand gripped yours. He let go a second later as he leaned back, propping himself up against the armrest and gesturing for you to lay down next to him.
You knew that your face must’ve been bright red but you carefully climbed into the space between his body and the back of the couch. You slung your arm around his torso and rested your head against his chest.
After a few minutes, Luke started snoring quietly. You stared up at him, trying to resist the urge to pinch yourself. It wasn’t the first time you and Luke had cuddled, not by a long shot. There were countless sleepovers when you were kids and even during movie nights as you got older.
But this was different.
Any other night, you probably wouldn’t be able to sleep with all the thoughts racing around in your brain about what all of this meant. But between the soft glow of the lights, the sound of the rain hitting the roof and Luke’s steady heartbeat beneath you, you felt yourself drifting off.

congrats on 500!!! 🥳
can i request boggie (romantic or platonic) and “can i hold your hand?” 🥺
Thanks bestie!! This is my longest prompt fill so far lol, it kind of got away from me. This is my very first time writing Boggie, and my first time writing in Reggie’s POV, so have fun. Also you asked for sensory overload Bobby but I didn’t think I could do that justice so I did migraine Bobby instead. This technically takes place in my headcanon universe of my longfic, but you don’t need to have read that to understand this. Hope you like it!
--
Bobby’s gone.
Reggie doesn’t think anyone but him has noticed yet. Luke and Alex are too busy arguing with each other (good-naturedly, with no real anger or malice; Reggie can always tell the difference, without even having to pay attention to what they’re arguing about, though this time he’s pretty sure it has something to do with which color m&m is superior).
But anyway, Luke and Alex aren’t paying attention to anything but each other, and Bobby slipped out twenty minutes ago with a pained expression and a mumbled excuse and he hasn’t come back yet, and apparently only Reggie has noticed.
He’s not sure what he should do about it, though. Reggie likes Bobby—he’s a great guitar player, and his movie collection is unparalleled, and one time when Reggie showed up at school with a black eye, Bobby got suspended for two weeks because he decked a guy who tried to make fun of Reggie for it—but as much as Reggie would like him and Bobby to be friends, it can’t be denied that Bobby is… well… Luke’s. And not just because Luke is even more touchy-feely with Bobby than he is with everyone else, or because Luke spends every other night sharing Bobby’s bed because he has nightmares (something Reggie doesn’t think he’s actually supposed to know), or because whenever Luke and Bobby are in a room together, they can’t stop looking at each other. But also because the only reason Bobby joined the band in the first place was because he was there for Luke when Reggie and Alex weren’t. He was Luke’s best friend when Reggie failed to be.
And Reggie hates to take sides (especially because Luke once got really mad at him and literally accused him of taking sides), but if Luke is on Bobby’s and Alex is sorta vaguely not, Reggie feels like he’s kind of statistically obligated to balance it out. So as much as they’re all a band, and as much as Luke will always be Reggie’s first and best friend, and as much as Reggie would love to get closer to their rhythm guitarist, sometimes they just can’t help pairing off, and when they do, Sunset Curve becomes, well, Luke and Bobby—Reggie and Alex.
But anyway. Reggie checks his watch. Bobby has now been gone twenty-five minutes, and Luke and Alex have moved on to discussing which animated m&m from the commercials they would date if given the option, and Reggie’s starting to get a little worried.
“Hey, guys?” he says, putting aside the bass he’d been sort of plucking at. “Can you shut up for a second?”
Luke and Alex immediately stop their bickering and turn to look at him, faces lit with matching concern. “Yeah, Reg?” Alex says gently.
“You okay, bro?”
Reggie manages a smile. They both know him so well. He gives a quick shake of his head to assure them he’s fine, their arguing wasn’t too much (later, once he’s sure Bobby’s okay, he might even put his two cents in, since the answer to both debates is obviously Green). “Do you know where Bobby went? He hasn’t come back yet.”
Alex frowns, and Luke looks around the studio as if he’s just then realizing that Bobby’s not still sitting on the couch next to him where he was half an hour ago.
“Where’d he go?” Luke gets up off the couch and clambers over the coffee table to cross the studio, past Reggie and Alex. He hauls open one of the doors and peers out into the driveway, then frowns back over his shoulder at them. “I don’t see him. He must’ve gone into the house.” A flash of something crosses his expression and he glances nervously from Reggie to Alex and back again. “I—I’d go look for him, but I don’t know if his parents are home, the car’s here.”
“I’ll go,” Reggie offers before it can become a thing, the fact that Bobby is Luke’s but Luke can’t even go after him when he leaves the studio because Luke is a missing person who Bobby’s parents don’t know lives in their garage.
“Thanks, Reg,” Luke says, and Reggie gives him a comforting pat on the shoulder as he passes.
Reggie doesn’t have to go far. He follows the path up from the driveway and catches sight of Bobby right away, sitting on his front porch with his face buried in his knees and his arms wrapped protectively around his head.
“Hey, there you are!” Reggie calls out without thinking, and then regrets it when Bobby’s head snaps up and he flinches with his whole body, a tiny whimper escaping his mouth just loud enough for Reggie to hear across the garden. Bobby’s face is so pale it’s almost green, and his eyes are hidden behind these thick dark sunglasses Reggie’s never seen him wear before.
Reggie’s heart lurches, and he hurries up the rest of the path. He sinks gently onto the porch step next to Bobby and asks as quietly as he can, “Bobby, what’s wrong?”
Bobby shoots him a shaky, unconvincing smile and whips his shades off. “Nothing, Reg, I’m—fuck.” Reggie gets half a glimpse of Bobby’s eyes—squinty and dull and full of so much pain—before Bobby goes another shade whiter, shoves his sunglasses back on, and presses his face into his lap with a groan.
Reggie’s concern spikes. He hovers a hand over Bobby’s shoulder, wanting to help but not sure if touching him when he’s like this will only make things worse. “Bobby? What—what’s going on with you, man? You’re scaring me.”
Bobby gives a miniscule shake of his head, still hidden in his folded arms. “I—it’s just… headache,” he mumbles, the words slow and slurred and muffled like even just opening his mouth too wide hurts him. He breathes heavily for a moment or two, then adds, “Really bad headache.”
“Oh.” Somehow, that’s… not what Reggie thought was happening here. Part of him relaxes some, even though his worry doesn’t lessen.
If Bobby were having a panic attack, like Alex gets sometimes, or one of those everything’s too much feelings that make it physically impossible for Luke to wear sleeves most days, then Reggie wouldn’t know what to do, how to help. Stuff like that is too personal, too individualized, and Reggie doesn’t know Bobby that well. But pain—physical pain—that, Reggie can deal with. That, Reggie knows all too well.
“Can I get you anything? What do you need?”
Bobby’s quiet for a moment, then: “Dark. Cold. Quiet… Maybe some medicine if I can keep it down.”
Reggie nods, even though he knows Bobby can’t see him. “We can do that. Is there a reason you were sitting out here in the first place? Probably easier to get dark and cold and quiet in your room, don’t you think?” He cranes his neck to see Bobby’s window above the porch roof. Reggie’s only been in there a handful of times, but if Bobby gets these headaches often, the blackout curtains on Bobby’s bedroom window suddenly make a lot more sense.
(Though, Reggie can’t help but wonder, if Bobby gets these headaches often, how has Reggie never noticed before?)
“Dizzy,” Bobby mumbles, and Reggie cuts his gaze sharply back to him. It takes a second to register that Bobby’s answering Reggie’s question and not necessarily describing how he feels now. “Couldn’t… stairs.” A pause thick enough for Reggie to get the sense there’s more, and then Bobby admits, his voice smaller than Reggie’s ever heard it, “Tried to ignore it too long. Been kinda coming on all day, but I didn’t wanna ruin rehearsal.”
Reggie’s heart gives a pang of sympathy. He makes a mental note to give Bobby a talk later, when he’s feeling better, about hiding stuff like this—and then maybe he’ll give Luke and Alex (and himself) a talk about whatever they did to make Bobby feel like he has to.
But all that can wait. For now, his only priority is getting Bobby settled in bed with all the lights off and an icepack on his head. “Okay, Bobby, I’m gonna get you inside so you can rest, okay? But can I try something first?”
Bobby stiffens. “Try what?”
Reggie’s heart’s beating a little too fast, though he’s not sure why. He swallows, tries to ignore the fact that he’s definitely blushing, and says, “Can I hold your hand?”
Bobby’s silent and still for so long that Reggie starts to worry he’s overstepped. But before he can figure out how to backtrack, Bobby grumbles something unintelligible into his lap and flops a hand in Reggie’s face. Reggie grabs it, hoping his own hands aren’t too sweaty, and expertly applies pressure to the point between the base of Bobby’s thumb and index finger.
The effect is almost instantaneous: Bobby shudders, and his muscles relax like a ripple going through him, and he slowly sits up and raises his head. Reggie can’t really read his expression with the sunglasses still on, but what he can see of Bobby’s face looks less pinched, less pained, and he’s gotten some of the color back in his cheeks.
He stares at Reggie, mouth hanging open, and breathes, “Whoa.”
Reggie blushes, self-conscious, but doesn’t stop gently massaging Bobby’s hand. “Better?”
Bobby nods. “How—how did you know how to do that?”
Reggie manages a sheepish smile. “My mom gets migraines. And, well, hangovers. So I’ve kinda picked up some tricks. Coffee really helps her, too, if you can stomach it.”
Bobby’s still staring at him, and Reggie swallows, his stomach giving a weird little flip that’s not exactly unpleasant. Finally, Bobby looks away and gingerly pulls his hand out of Reggie’s to rub at his temples. “Well, thanks, Reg, that really helped. I’m gonna go inside before it gets worse again. Can you, uh—”
“Yeah, yeah, no, I’ll—tell the guys… something.”
Bobby gives him a shy, grateful smile, and then slowly pushes himself to his feet.
When the front door closes behind Bobby, Reggie lets out a shaky breath he hadn’t realized he’d been holding. He feels jittery and out of breath, like he just drank seven sodas or ran a marathon or something. His hands are tingly where they’d touched Bobby’s, and he can’t get the image of that last little smile out of his head.
Bobby doesn’t smile very often, and when he does, it’s not like that.
(And if it is, it’s not at Reggie.)
Reggie mutters a curse and copies Bobby’s earlier position, his face hidden in his hands. Because he thinks he might like Bobby.
But Bobby is Luke’s.
sorry bestie

prompt: i would literally commit a crime for a buddie sick fic in these trying times,,, i don’t even care what the specifics are just,, hngg buddie sickfic ❤️👄❤️ (big mood, anon)
(I got another anon that asked for Buck taking care of sick Eddie as well. I just lost the dang ask before I could post the fic.)
Ever since Maddie’s kidnapping, Buck cannot, for the life of him, sleep well. His subconscious is gripped in a muted fear, keeping him trapped in interrupted, light slumbers. Maddie and everyone at the 118 pester him regularly about it, giving him various options to help with sleep, but he’s afraid of the foggy mind that comes with over-the-counter medication, so he convinces himself he can run on low fumes, boosting with caffeine as needed because a tired mind is still a clear mind, albeit a little slower.
When his phone rings at 2:07 a.m., Buck jerks awake, mind previously edging the line of a dream, and he fumbles blindly for his phone, squinting at the light to see “Eddie Diaz” flashing across his screen.
His stomach bottoms out, and he presses answer and swings his legs over the bed, feeling cold with fear. “Eddie? What’s wrong?” He can hear crying on the other end, and he balances the phone between his ear and shoulder as he kicks around in the dark for his abandons shorts. “Eddie!”
“Hey, sorry. One sec.”
Eddie sounds panicked, Buck thinks, taking the steps down to the first floor two at a time. He can hear Eddie trying to reassure Christopher that everything’s going to be okay in the background, and he pauses, briefly gripped in a paralyzing fear, briefly brought back to the tsunami, to losing Christopher.
“Look, I’m sorry for calling so late. Chris has been sick since the end of my shift, and I just can’t get his fever down. With his CP... I’m taking him to the ER.”
Buck’s half out the door, shoes barely on his feet, when he realizes he’s still shirtless. He snags an LAFD zip-up off the back of a chair and stumbles back to the door, arms sliding into the jacket. “What hospital?”
“I... I didn’t even ask. You’ll come?”
“Of course I’ll come,” Buck spits out, already out the door and taking the steps out of his apartment building two at a time. “What hospital?” He repeats as he runs out of the building and all but rips his jeep door open. He nods absently when Eddie rattles off the details, mentally mapping out the quickest route.
“I’ll be there in ten.”
“Be careful.”
Buck rolls his eyes because of course Eddie is going to still worry for his well-being, and he ends the call and peels out of his parking spot.
***
“Hi,” Buck starts, breathless, heart trying to catch up to the rest of him, “my name is Evan Buckley, and I’m looking for a young kid. Christopher-”
“Buck.”
Buck whips around from the receptionist desk to see Eddie slipping out a set of large double doors, and for a moment, he doesn’t move, he only assesses. Eddie’s pale, which, Buck thinks, is to be expected if he’s been up in a near-constant state of worry after a 16-hour shift. His cheeks are red, and Buck’s quick to peg it on exertion, on Eddie racing into the hospital with Christopher, his own heart also working to match the rest of him. And, he’s shaking, and Buck knows cold nerves all too well, still feeling chilled himself.
His eyes fall to Eddie’s, and then he crosses the room to him quickly and gathers him in his arms tightly. Eddie slumps against his chest, and Buck tightens his arms around him.
“How’s Chris?”
Eddie lingers for a moment, clinging to Buck, before he pulls away with a low sigh. “He’s okay. Just a persistent virus.”
Buck nods, a frown playing at his lips. Without Eddie’s body flush against him, he feels colder than normal, and on instinct, he smooths the back of his hand to Eddie’s forehead, lingering there before moving to cup Eddie’s neck.
“You sure he’s the only one with a virus? You’re really warm.”
“I...” Eddie sighs, rubbing at the back of his neck. “I’ve been feeling a little off, but Chris...”
“Right, where is he?”
Eddie leads Buck to Christopher’s room, and as soon as he steps in, Christopher’s face lights up in such a way that Buck’s steps falter.
“Buck!”
Though sounding a little weak, the contagious energy is still centerfold, and Buck leans toward it, finding his footing and matching Christopher’s smile with his own.
“Hey, buddy! Heard you aren’t feeling so hot.” Buck eases himself onto the edge of the hospital bed, staring at Christopher’s vitals for an extended moment before turning toward him, assessing the same way he assessed Eddie.
“Yeah, I feel bad.”
A sympathetic frown pulling at his lips, Buck spares a glance to see Eddie flopping down onto a chair pulled to Christopher’s bedside. “I bet you do, but you’re going to feel better in no time. You’ve got the Diaz genes.”
“And daddy will feel better too?”
Buck finds Eddie’s eyes, and he opens his mouth to speak, stopping when Eddie shoots him a very clear look that all but screams “don’t.”
“I’m sure your dad will feel a lot better when you’re better.”
“That’s good,” Christopher mumbles, and Buck nods, patting Christopher’s leg.
***
Buck’s carefully quiet as Eddie putters around his house, watching as Eddie measures out Christopher’s medicine, as he hovers over Christopher until he falls asleep, and he only intervenes when he’s sure Eddie can breathe deeply without the fear that Christopher is going to take a turn for the worse.
“He’s finally asleep,” Eddie mutters, coughing into his fist. “All dosed up, fever’s finally down. I’ll contact his school in a few hours before my shift; see if Carla can take him for a the full day.”
“You aren’t going in.”
Eddie stops around a yawn. “What?”
“I texted Bobby. He’s pulling coverage for the next few days so you can rest.” Buck can pinpoint every emotion that flicks across Eddie’s face: confusion, frustration, exhaustion. He’s seen them all, sometimes daily.
“Buck-”
“Eddie, you have a fever. You’re exhausted, and you are only going to get worse if you go on three hours of sleep.”
“Since when did you become the responsible one?” Eddie sighs lowly, and Buck laughs, rubbing at the back of his neck.
“It’s my week to be responsible. You had it last week.”
Eddie hums around a small smile and rubs at the ache on his forehead. “I really appreciate you coming, Buck. I don’t think... I just... It was really nice to have you there.”
Buck gets to his feet, and, for the second time that night, crosses the room and pulls Eddie right to his chest, hoping that he can ease some of the worrying pressure, even if just for a moment.
Eddie snuggles into him, frowning as he thumbs Buck’s bare chest, exposed where his zipper’s slipped down a little.
“Where’s your shirt?”
“Ah, I kinda forgot one when I rushed out.” Buck smiles sheepishly when Eddie pulls back, and he cups a hand to Eddie’s cheek, too warm for his liking.
“Okay, Diaz, it’s your turn.”
“My turn for what?”
Buck snags Eddie’s hand and guides him to the bedroom, ignoring Eddie’s questions the whole way. He makes easy work of tugging Eddie’s jacket and jeans off, and he urges him into the bed in nothing but a short sleeve under shirt and boxers.
“Buck-”
Buck disappears into the bathroom, still promptly ignoring Eddie, and he comes back with a glass of water, a bottle of ibuprofen, and a thermometer.
“Buck, I’m fine.”
“Mmhmm, sure. Open.” Buck waves the thermometer in front of Eddie’s face until Eddie sighs and opens his mouth wide enough for Buck to slip the thermometer under his tongue. While waiting, he presses two fingers to Eddie’s neck, counting the flutter of heartbeats beneath his finger prints until the thermometer beeps.
“101.7,” Buck reads aloud, frowning. “Heartbeat’s a little fast. Any other symptoms?”
Eddie gives him a knowing look, but Buck doesn’t back down, matching Eddie’s narrow gaze until Eddie caves.
“My head and throat hurt. I’m freezing, and I’m tired.”
Nodding, Buck tugs at the blankets until they are covering Eddie up to his chest. He shakes a couple of pills into his hand, offering them to Eddie with the water.
“Seems like you definitely got Christopher’s virus.”
“Perks of parenting,” Eddie mutters around a wince, the pills grating against his throat. He hands off the cup, sighing contentedly when Buck smooths a cool palm to his forehead.
“You should save yourself. This thing apparently moves fast.”
“I’m not going anywhere.”
Eddie grabs Buck’s wrist and pulls his hand away, a tight frown on his lips.
“Buck, you have a shift in a few hours. You need-”
“Bobby took me off the schedule, too. At least for today. I’ve been instructed to call him later to update him on how you and Christopher are.”
“And you agreed?”
“Someone has to make sure you and Chris are okay,” Buck says as if it’s the most obvious thing and the world and equally the easiest decision he’s ever made, and Eddie shakes his head.
“No, Buck, you really don’t have to... What are you doing?”
Buck’s just kicked his shorts off across the room, and he’s setting an alarm on his phone as he crawls into the empty side of the bed.
“Okay, I’ve got an alarm set for 6 to check Christopher’s temperature, and I’ll wake you at 7 to check you over.”
“Buck-”
Ignoring Eddie, Buck drops his phone on the night stand and cuts out the light, snuggling into the bed with a low sigh.
“Evan.”
“Shh,” Buck shushes, patting blindly until his palm cups over Eddie’s mouth. “I’m sleeping.”
“You’ll get sick.” Eddie mumbles, slapping Buck’s hand away.
“Okay? I don’t know if you remember, but I got a clean bill of health from the hospital, so bring it.”
“You’re so dumb,” Eddie sighs, and Buck laughs, blindly reaching around to pat Eddie’s too-warm cheek.
“Sleep, loser.”

Viva Las Vegas, Pt. 14 - Unexpected Meeting
Summary: Sunset Curve Alive AU, Willex, who will they run into?, 3.2k
@trevor-wilson-covington is the bestie who makes these lovely edits, we stan supportive friends
WARNINGS: death mention, emotional trauma
Part 1, Part 2, Part 3, Part 4, Part 5, Part 6, Part 7, Part 8, Part 9, Part 10, Part 11, Part 12, Part 13
“Man, I need a break,” Reggie was saying as he strolled with Alex down an unfamiliar street in the early evening, stretching his arms. “I mean, being in the studio all the time has been good, but on top of everything else it’s just so much!”
Unsure where they were headed, Alex walked a few paces ahead on the sidewalk, casually navigating for both of them. He squinted as he looked at Reggie.
“Reggie, you dropped, like, all of your classes once we signed on.”
“Nope!” his friend exclaimed, tilting his head in a proud manner. “I just needed two electives to graduate. It’s okay, though, man. Not everyone finishes their math requirements as a freshman.” Reggie patted Alex’s shoulder, as if it were any sort of consolation.
“No, good for you Reg,” Alex said. His parents had paid for all this private tutoring and even gotten him to take some college credits early. Of course, his only serious plan after high school had been the band so it was all wasted effort, but then all of their attempts with him amounted to that. He was learning to feel less guilty over it. It wasn’t his fault they never cared about what he wanted.
“How long do you think Luke and Bobby are gonna be workshopping their parts together?” Reggie asked.
“Long enough. Where are we going, exactly?”
“Oh, I was just kind of keeping an eye out for anywhere interesting.”
Alex blinked. “I thought we were headed somewhere specific.”
“I’ve only been to this side of L.A. like, once, so I don’t think I’d make a good tour guide,” Reggie stated.
And just like that, Alex’s mind thrust itself back into remembering Willie. He was getting better at not crumbling completely in the moment, but it still felt like his heart was temporarily dunked into a dark ocean of misery. It would remain waterlogged and heavy inside his chest for a while.
“Alex?” Reggie was saying, looking at him with concern. “You okay?”
Snapping his thoughts back to the present, Alex sighed as he looked back at Reggie.
“I’ll be fine.”
He shoved his hands into the pockets of his jean jacket and pressed his arms against his sides. Shoulders hunched, he continued through the crowd. Focusing on walking would hopefully help it wear off. He made every step purposeful, trying to get the weight in his heart to fall through his feet. Reggie’s hand on his shoulder made him turn.
“It’s still rough, isn’t it?” he asked gently. “If I said something - ”
“It’s not your fault,” Alex tried to assure him. “Sometimes it just comes out of nowhere. Besides, I can’t make you and everyone else walk on eggshells.”
“Maybe not, but we’re in this with you. It may have been different for us, but we all met Willie. I’d never seen you warm up to anyone that fast. Even after a few months, it’s still fresh; don’t force yourself to be better for us.”
Pausing on the sidewalk, Alex looked up at Reggie. He tried to smile as gratitude edged its way in, relieving most of the heaviness in his chest.
“I appreciate that, Reg.”
“Of course, man.”
“So,” Alex took a deep breath to let everything else wash away as they kept wandering. “You made it sound like you had a lot going on. Is everything at home okay?”
Reggie shrugged. “Eh...no change there. My mom went to stay with her sister after the last fight, so my dad’s been trying his best to take care of everything, but he’s too upset to handle it well. My little sister has just been sleeping over with friends anyway, and I can handle myself, so - ” he shrugged again, “ - you know, I do what I can.”
Alex nodded. He had nothing really to comment, and Reggie knew he was always there to support him. This wasn’t anything unusual for him, but it still wasn’t right. Neither of them spent much time at their own homes, so wandering through the city like this kept them occupied when they weren’t with the rest of the band. Looking up at the store signs around them, he saw a record store about a block ahead.
“Hey, why don’t we check that out?” he suggested.
“Yeah!” Reggie said, dropping any ounce of gloom from the previous subject and skipping along to catch up with Alex.
A small bell rang as they came through the door, and they immediately began filtering through shelves of records and CDs. Peeking toward the back of the store, Alex could see a counter that offered a menu of food and drinks, some tables, as well as the smallest stage in the world. This seemed like a neat little place.
“Oh,” Reggie started after a while. “I got us a gig playing at my cousin’s wedding.”
“A wedding?” Alex said skeptically, turning from the Pansy Division vinyl he was checking out. “When we’re trying to finish a record and go on tour?”
“It’s Conrad, okay, he’s family! And he said we could make the setlist.”
Alex shrugged, considering that was fair.
“...with his approval.”
At that addition, Alex could only sigh and shake his head.
“And then maybe, you could, I don’t know, finally ask Bobby to be your date?”
Reggie put down the Mötley Crüe album he’d been examining and looked up at him in shock. Alex realized he’d possibly been too blunt. But immediately Reggie began to cover it up, laughing and shaking his head.
“What?” he said, his denial completely transparent. “Was that a...was that supposed to be a joke or something?”
Giving him a look of pity, Alex put his hands on his hips.
“You’re really gonna try to pull the wool over the eyes of your gay friend?”
Caught, Reggie looked back at him in defeat and bowed his head.
“I’m gonna guess you noticed a while ago?”
Nodding, Alex tried to soften his demeanor.
“There’s been something up with you two for months. How come you haven’t tried to talk to him about it?”
Reggie knit his brow and began fiddling with his fingers.
“Well, I’m a little confused by it, to be honest. Cuz, I mean...I like girls, right?”
“Yeah, so?”
“But I like Bobby, too.”
“Okay.”
His friend looked up at him, expecting more of a reaction. Alex leaned against the shelf and folded his arms.
“Do you think there’s something wrong with you? Because you’re talking to the king of wrong feelings.”
“Well, sometimes I feel like that, but not really. It’s something else,” Reggie said.
“Like what?”
“Well...we’ve been friends for years. It just sort of crept up on me and I don’t know what to do. What if he rejects it? He’s one of my best friends.”
Thinking for a moment, Alex looked down at his feet. He didn’t blame Reggie for being worried. He’d had a mini crush on Bobby for a couple weeks back in ninth grade and had the same dilemma. It was easier for him to get over, though, simply because it had faded quickly.
“Well, I wish I could say if it’s meant to be it’ll happen, but sometimes…”
Sometimes it dies in a fire before there’s any chance of knowing.
He shook his head to get rid of the awful thought and ignored Reggie’s look of concern.
“But if I know Bobby, I don’t think it’s going to harm anything. I think you should go for it, Reg. I truly, honestly, will back you up on that.”
A smile spread wide across Reggie’s face.
“Thanks, man!”
Without fretting over it for another second, he turned back to the shelf of CDs he’d been perusing, and Alex did the same. There was a crazy good selection, and Alex wished he could get his hands on a record player. Playing CDs on a boombox worked for some things, but there was a level of charm in playing something on a vinyl record that appealed to him even more. He made a note to get a small notebook to carry in his fanny pack, hoping to return to this store and make a wishlist of sorts to work toward.
“Do I see Alex and Reggie of Sunset Curve?” A familiar voice said from behind.
Both of them turned to find Flynn standing in the aisle, braids tied up into a high ponytail and eyebrow arched in her usual smart fashion.
“Hey Flynn!” Reggie exclaimed, pulling her into a hug. Alex went in for one afterward, happily surprised.
“Hey guys!” she said, grinning.
“What are you up to?” Alex asked.
“Gonna be performing in a bit,” she said excitedly. “Just a warm up before the main group comes on. I’ve been working on some of my own stuff; I think you guys would love it! Got time to stick around?”
“Sweet!” Reggie raised a fist for her to bump. “I’m down. Alex, wanna stay?”
“Yeah, sounds great!”
He had yet to see what Flynn was capable of. If he were to judge only on knowing she’d been in a duo with Julie, he expected it to be good.
“Also, you should try the burritos here,” Flynn told them. “They are to die for!”
The endless click-rollll-click-click-click of his board filled his ears as Willie moved through the street, feeling the wind pass over him in the way that made freedom feel like he could clutch it in his hands. He’d actually spent today not worrying about Alex. It felt good not to dwell on what little past he had access to. Of course, he still had repetitive dreams about the few memories that had come back, but the backwards one with Caleb in it hadn’t come back ever since he’d gotten to LA. Moving forward felt...nice.
He had spent the morning sketching at the beach, getting all sorts of practice in. The beautiful waves, seagulls, the different activities all around him. Somehow a group of young college kids had gotten him to join their volleyball tournament. Willie wasn’t sure if he’d ever played it before, but once he caught onto the game, he’d gotten surprisingly good. It felt nice to roll up the hem of his jeans and dig his toes into the warm sand while playing with a group of strangers. They’d nicknamed him Mowgli, whatever that meant. He liked the sound of it though.
Heading off to work after cleaning himself up, he realized he could spend all his free time that way. Peacefully sketching, meeting fun people, and enjoying his surroundings. Was that all it took to be happy? Willie chuckled at the thought of how much Caleb had stressed over rising to the top of his business game, never appearing to be satisfied with any of it. Leaving Vegas remained the best decision he’d ever made. Of course, he wasn’t always proud about his method of burning down the shed, but it had been one of those...heat of the moment things.
Willie skated up to the back entrance and shook his hair out after lifting off his helmet. Just a few short hours of making food, some chill entertainment, and he could peace out for the night. He headed inside the store and right into the small kitchen. Thankfully, the store didn’t fit too many patrons and it was never hard to keep up with orders, and Kyle had a system so he never had to leave the kitchen. This basically meant he could jam to the live music during the lulls between orders with no interruption.
Kyle entered the kitchen just as Willie was tying on his apron.
“Hey, dude, thanks for coming. We actually got two acts coming in, so it should be a full crowd. Katelyn can be the MC for the first bit, but do you mind taking over for the second half?”
A twinge of excitement came over Willie and he lit up. He’d never gotten to try being an MC before.
“Don’t mind at all!” he said.
“Alright, man!” Kyle exclaimed. “First two orders up: swamp style nachos and a bog burrito.”
“Got it.”
“We’re up for a big night with these performances,” the girl hosting hyped up the crowd. “Let’s give it up for our artist of the night: Flynn Taylor!”
Reggie cupped his hands over his mouth as he hollered along with everyone else’s applause. Alex clapped with a mouthful of nachos. Flynn stepped onto the stage behind a set of deejay turntables, smirking as she began flipping switches and turning knobs.
“Thanks for coming out here everyone,” she said into the mic. More applause and whistles echoed through the room. “We’re gonna make a lot of noise tonight, so let me hear you get pumped!”
As she began playing a beat, Alex bobbed along, immediately interested. He didn’t know a thing about mixing, so he was highly impressed with the different sounds she was using. Then Flynn picked up the mic and began rapping and the whole room cheered.
“...I’m a princess, I don’t need a prince, boy I’m priceless...I’m here to shut it down like a night shift…”
“Man,” Reggie leaned over to Alex. “She’s so good! I say we book her to open for us ASAP as possible.”
Alex merely snorted and chuckled at Reggie’s misuse of the acronym. He actually enjoyed the idea of having Flynn rapping to open for their rock shows. Gigs where all the bands sounded the same got a little flavorless sometimes.
“Also,” Reggie said as he took a huge bite into his burrito. “This is the best burrito I’ve ever had.”
“Lemme try some, you can try my nachos,” Alex said.
All Reggie could say was Mm! as he passed the burrito over.
The final beats of the first performer echoed in the kitchen where Willie had been dancing, waving various kitchen tools around. He’d thoroughly enjoyed the whole set, and wondered what sounded so familiar about the girl who was rapping. Before he could spend more time thinking about it, Kyle came in.
“Okay, you ready?” he asked.
“I just keep people busy and then announce the next group, right?” Willie guessed.
“Yeah, man, you’ve got this!”
“What’s the next group called?”
“Downslide. And they brought some merch, so it’s a good idea to mention that to the crowd as well.”
“Okay,” Willie nodded, slipping out of his apron. “Maybe I could put their t-shirt on or something, you know, sell the look?”
Kyle looked impressed. “Yeah! I’ll go see what they’ve got.”
He left the kitchen and hardly a minute later returned with a jacket.
“They said you could wear it for the night. Not gonna lie, I wish I could wear this, it’s a sweet jacket.”
Willie slipped it on, and turned around. He didn’t often wear jackets, but whatever it was made of was pretty soft.
“Guess I’m ready,” he said, giving Kyle a hand slide and fist bump before leaving the kitchen. He stepped up behind the microphone and looked out at the crowd, and further back, the empty store.
At that moment, he heard the bell of the store door ring and two guys walked outside. Through the window, a familiar leather jacket passed. Then, he saw a head of blonde hair follow, turning to look both ways to cross the street, and his heart grew to fill all the empty space in his chest. It was unmistakable. It had to be.
“Alex...” he breathed quietly into the microphone. Adrenaline immediately went out to his extremities. The crowd before him looked bewildered as they waited for him to announce the next group.
Glancing offstage, he saw Kyle give him a strange look. Willie shook his head, unclear what message he was sending but ultimately knowing he couldn’t stay at his current spot. Before he could think anything else, his legs were bounding out the door. It felt like every ounce of blood in his veins knew. The search was over.
Reggie and Alex had just reached the opposite corner. He wasn’t going to miss his chance.
“Alex!” he cried, running to meet them.
He immediately thrust his arms around a surprised Alex, gripping him tightly, burying his face into his shoulder.
“Oh my god, Alex!” he said, panting. “It’s so good to see you.”
He didn’t feel the hug didn’t reciprocate, and instead Alex grabbed his shoulders and pushed him away. The darkness of the street seemed to envelop him.
“What are you - ?” Alex started, staring back at Willie like he’d just been assaulted. Then shock wiped over his whole face. Then confusion. And then a pain came over all of it that made Willie’s concern grow.
“What - what is it?” he asked, all the excitement gone.
Alex wouldn’t look him in the eye, and he raised a hand to hold the side of his head.
“No, this isn’t real,” he whispered to himself, shrinking backward and shutting his eyes. “This can’t be real.”
Willie glanced over at Reggie, who also stared like he was seeing the impossible. He could see Alex shaking and heard a rattled breath, and felt tension grow thick in the air. Quickly, he went to take Alex’s face in his hands.
“Alex, hey, look, it’s me,” he soothed. He fought to get a look directly into his eyes. “It’s me, Willie.”
Finally, the green ocean gazed back at him, turbulent and restless. What once had been a grounding rhythm of waves had turned into a maelstrom of despair. Even worse were the tears welling up right before him. Willie watched the storm rage for a few seconds, seeking for a moment of calm.
“What’s wrong?” he murmured, lowering his hands. Alex looked so wounded it frightened him.
“How are you alive?” Alex begged to know.
Blinking, Willie sat back, astounded at those words. While he agreed it was a miracle he was still alive, he couldn’t fathom why Alex would ask such a question. He chuckled merely out of discomfort.
“I’m here.” Willie glanced at Reggie, looking for an explanation. “Flesh and bone. Why? What happened?”
Alex looked at him incredulously, jaw hanging open. He looked so tightly wound and so scattered all at once.
“Caleb told me you were dead.”
Willie blanched inwardly at the mention of Caleb, but even more so at the rest of that sentence he’d been utterly unprepared to hear.
“He...he - ” he stammered for a moment. “When would you have even talked to him?”
Sharing a look with Reggie, Alex took a deep breath. Then he looked back at Willie hesitantly.
“We see him all the time. We work for him now.”
It was Willie’s turn to drop his jaw.
“We’ve been signed to his record label for a few months now,” Reggie pitched in.
Directing his gaze to the ground, Willie puzzled for a minute.
“Why would I be dead?” he asked, looking back up at Alex.
For a minute Alex simply gazed at him wordlessly.
“I don’t know,” he said. There was a pause as both of them finally looked at each other, fully aware that this was real. And then Alex threw his arms around Willie to return the hug. Willie had to raise himself up on his toes to avoid falling over, and he tightened his grip to remain steady. He felt joy spread through his whole torso and breathed a sigh of relief as hands tangled into his hair. “But that doesn’t matter. I’m so happy to see you.”

*Gasp* And They Were NEIGHBORS! A Buddie Neighbor AU
This fic is dedicated to @agentmarymargaretskitz who sent me the original prompt (as well as so many others when I wasn’t feeling well, seriously can’t thank you enough and I will respond to each of your asks, I’m just savoring them) and to @justsmilestuffhappens who I have been mutualling back and forth with for a REALLY long time (Hi! Nice to meet you, I love you already!) and wanted to see this prompt happen!
***
“I SWEAR to god, Buck, if I hear even one more word out of your mouth about this guy and his kid I will throw you over this balcony!”
“But Hen--”
“He’s gorgeous, I know! And his kid is the cutest thing since puppies! We get it! Now stop talking about it and do something about it!” Hen sounded mostly exasperated, but dare Buck hope he still heard a little fondness in there as well?
He smiled. “Right. Okay.” Silence followed as he wracked his brains. “Wait, what should I do?? This guy doesn’t know me at all, I haven’t gone over yet to say hello, I’m so worried about being awkward or overkill--”
“Overkill? You??” Chimney chuckled from across the firehouse loft where he was playing the pinball arcade.
“Hey!”
“In all seriousness, Buck,” Chim turned and addressed him, his smile gone from teasing to kind. “You’re gonna be fine, just go say hi. The sooner you get it over with, the less awkward it’ll be. Also, remember you still gotta find out if he’s interested. And available too; if he’s as hot as you say, he could already be dating someone.”
“Oh shit! Wait, what if he is?” Buck put his face in his hands and groaned. “Urgh, what should I do?”
“Why not take over some of those cookies I taught you how to bake last week, Buck?” Buck raised his eyes to Bobby, who was watching him with a small, patient smile. “Nothing out of the ordinary about bringing some baked goods to a new neighbor. It’s a great way to introduce yourself and get in their good books.”
“Okay!” Buck nodded. “Can you help me bake them again, Cap?”
Bobby's nodded, already headed for the pantry. “Of course.”
***
Eddie sighed. He was so glad he moved but it didn’t stop the process from being hell. It had been a long day job hunting and he still needed to find a good school for Chris. At the moment, Chris was in the living room, watching TV.
Eddie got up and went over to the fridge, digging around for the Tupperware of dinner Abuela had sent over and transferring it to a pot to reheat. Soon the smell of delicious posole filled the house and he sat, taking a moment just to savor the scent and feel just a bit more at home.
He was interrupted by a knock at the door.
“No rest for the weary.” Sighing, Eddie stood and shuffled over, glancing through the peephole. A tall man stood there, his hair short and neatly slicked back. He was shuffling back and forth awkwardly, a covered plate in his hands.
Who is this? Eddie opened the door.
“Can I help you?”
“Uh hey!” The man’s eyes lit up and he looked Eddie up and down. He was a bit taller than Eddie and dressed sharply in a firefighter’s uniform. Eddie instantly became aware of the ratty sweatpants and loose Henley he’d thrown on as soon as he’d gotten back home and how mussed his hair likely was from running his fingers through it in frustration. Weirdly though, the man’s smile didn’t dim.
“Hi, My name’s Evan Buckley, I’m your neighbor! Apartment 2B.” He smiled, eyes lingering on Eddie’s for just a moment too long, before he jolted and laughed awkwardly, lifting his hands up. “Cookies! Uh, I mean, I made cookies for you.” The man lifted the cloth off the plate and a heavenly smell wafted from a pile of delicious looking cookies. “They’re chocolate chip macadamia--wait, you don’t have any allergies right? Or gluten intolerant or anything? Or, shit, are you vegan? I should’ve asked, there’s eggs in here...” Evan made to cover the plate again, but Eddie put out a hand, stopping him. He couldn’t help grinning at the guy--the way he rambled, his bright smile.
“You think I’m gonna let you walk away with those now that you’ve offered? They smell great, Evan.”
“Oh thank goodness!” The smile was back and brighter. “And, uh, feel free to call me Buck, all my friends do. And welcome to the neighborhood! It’s nice here, everyone’s polite, except Mr. Grivary in 4C, he can be a bit--but of course you don’t want to hear me rambling...” The guy blushed and Eddie felt his own smile widen. This man was adorable.
“Actually, that sounds like useful information Buck.” Eddie remembered Abuela’s dinner and held the door wider. “I’m not really a cook myself, but we have my Abuela’s posole for dinner, would you like to join us?”
“Yes!! I mean,” Buck blushed again and cleared his throat. “Yeah sure, if it isn’t any trouble...”
***
Buck felt like he’d barely fallen asleep when his doorbell rang.
“Hmm?” He mumbled at the door. Which of course could not be heard by whoever was on the other side. They rang the doorbell again.
“Ugh, fuck... Yeah, coming!” Buck dragged himself out of bed and stumbled to the door, glancing through the peephole. He couldn’t help the smile that bloomed on his face as he caught sight of golden brown curls, red glasses, and the world’s cutest smile.
“Chris!” He pulled the door open. “What’s up, buddy?”
“I’ve got news!” Chris giggled as he carefully walked into Buck’s apartment and sat himself down at the kitchen table. Buck automatically reached for his crutches and propped them against the chair. It was hardly the first time Chris had come to visit; he came over often to play games, tell Buck about his day, or help him try out a new recipe. “Our school is holding a bake sale on Friday.”
“Those are fun.” Buck sat down across from Chris, voice lowered conspiratorially. “What are you making?”
“That’s the thing.” Christopher’s tone turned sad. “The teacher said it has to be homemade and Dad’s been stressing out about it. He’s super busy with his new job and I know he wants to help, but... He burned water once. Just water.”
“Aw man.” Buck put in every effort not to laugh, but a giggle still escaped. “You want me to help you put something together, take the pressure off your dad?” Christopher nodded happily and Buck reach for his notebook where he carefully documented all of Bobby’s recipes. “How’s cupcakes sound, Superman?”
In short order, they had all the ingredients lined up on the counter, and Chris was comfortably seated right next to the mixer, ready to dump in anything Buck handed him.
“...And then, only after that you want to add the dry stuff. I don’t really know the science behind it yet, I just know that it works. If I do find out, I’ll tell you.”
“Okay. Buck?”
“Hmm?” Buck consulted Bobby’s notes carefully and measured out a cup of flour, handing it over to be added to the mix.
“Where did you learn how to bake so well? Did your mom or dad teach you?”
Buck grinned. “Nah. My captain at the fire station is the best cook I’ve ever met. Everything I baked for you guys I learned from him.”
“Oh.” Christopher reached out a hand for the second cup of carefully measured flour. “Are your parents also bad cooks like my dad?”
“Well, no. My parents are nothing like your dad.” Buck sobered. “My mom cooked a little for us, but mostly we ordered in. And she never... uh, she never had time to teach me or Maddie. I didn’t have a complete homemade meal until I started working at the 118.” He shook his head to clear the thoughts and smiled at Christopher. “But now thanks to Cap, I got an almost-dad who cooks for me every day! And now he’s teaching me so I can do it one day for my kids, if I’m ever lucky enough to have them.”
Christopher thought for a second, absently reaching for the teaspoon of baking powder and adding it to the mix before saying. “I already have a dad, and I don’t want to trade him for anything. But... Could you be my second dad?”
Buck looked up from the salt, startled.
“Like a cooking almost-dad who teaches me how to cook just like your Cap does for you? I want to be able to help Dad so he stops feeling so bad about not cooking.” Christopher was smiling at him, waiting for a response. Buck looked away quickly and took a deep breath, clearing the sudden thickness in his throat and blinking away wet eyes.
“Y-yeah, sure, Chris. I’d be happy to.”
***
Eddie arrived home from work exhausted. As he approached the door, he noted how quiet the apartment sounded. Usually that meant that Christopher was hanging out by Buck’s, but Buck’s apartment was also quiet and dark. Hurrying toward the door, Eddie fumbled with his key and jerked it open as fast as he could--
“SURPRISE!!”
For only two people, Buck and Christopher still managed to startle the shit out of him.
“Fu-fudge! Guys what the hell...!”
“Happy birthday, Dad!” Christopher called from the table.
“Happy birthday, Eddie!” Buck was bent over something, his broad back blocking whatever it was. Then he rose and stepped away to Christopher’s side. He grinned, cheeks slightly flushed. “It’s not perfect, Cap would’ve done it better, but I’d say for Chris and I’s first ever layer cake it’s pretty darn good!” He and Chris high-fived each other as Eddie stepped closer.
The cake was lopsided, and the icing oozed down the sides a bit and on top... was that the number 32?
“Chris did all the writing,” Buck added proudly. “As the mastermind behind this, it was only right that he got the honors.”
“What do you think, Dad?” Chris’ voice bubbled over with delight.
Eddie looked up. They were both watching him, eyes bright, smiles wide, waiting on his response. I think--no, I know have the best kid ever.
And the best Buck.
Eddie couldn’t contain the huge grin that broke out on his face. “It’s perfect.” He looked a them, eyes meeting Christopher's, then Buck’s. “Thank you.”
***
“So when do I get to meet her?” Abuela was layering a container with tamales, her back to Eddie.
“Who?”
“The person you’ve been sharing all my cooking with.” Abuela’s tone brooked no nonsense. “The person who makes you smile to yourself every time you think I’m not looking.”
Eddie startled. “Oh, Buck? He’s not... we’re not--”
“Nonsense, mi amor.” Abuela chuckled, clamping the lid down on the container of tamales and handing them to Eddie’s slack hands. “If he isn’t, then he should be.”
Eddie stopped where he was. Abuela is right. Chris adores him, I adore him... What am I waiting for?
He reached for his phone and sent out a text.
To: Buck
From Eddie:
Abuela made tamales. Come over tonight?

‘911′ 4.14 Survivors Review
I needed time to process everything. Overall, I genuinely loved the finale. I was surprised by the appearance for Miss Nia, the cutest member of the 118 (tied with Jee Yun, of course).
Buck’s Trauma
The first five minutes of Eddie’s rescue were some of the most intense and realistic in the show’s history. Buck’s screaming voice sounds like an angry teddy bear. I hated how Buck had to pull Eddie under the truck by his injured arm and his screaming. It was a beautiful mirror of 2.18 when Buck was pinned under the truck.
I’ve seen some people comment how Eddie getting shot was all about Buck. And it was. At this point, Eddie’s was lost in a haze of pain and unconsciousness and surgery. And I think the trauma will sink in later, when he’s at home recovering and more clearheaded.
Buck shaking after the call, being solely focused on Christopher, and being vulnerable with him was so real and heartbreaking and I appreciated them taking the time to show that. I do wish Buck or SOMEONE would have railed against gun culture and mass shootings. They had to coordinate with SWAT just to transport people to the hospital. It’s pure insanity that we’re essentially held hostage but people with assault rifles.
Buck also showed that he’d be a great guardian for Christopher. He kept his schedule the same. He was honest with him about how Eddie was doing but shielded him from the scary details. He gave him the space to be upset. It was a nice throwback to 2.04 seeing Buck and Chris eating cereal before school. Chris was worried about his dad, but he was joking with Buck too, meaning he felt safe and cared for and knew that Eddie was too.
“You went Full Buck.” THAT’S NOT A BAD THING, BOBBY!
Here’s the thing: Buck is not reckless. He’s fearless. He does what’s right no matter the cost or who tells him not to. Recklessness implies that he doesn’t think things through, but he definitely does. When he was saving the man trapped on the crane, he didn’t just fly into action, he took the medical bag with him. He had a treatment plan in mind, and he probably realized that the sniper would have difficulties getting that high that fast in an area filled with secure apartment buildings and office buildings with metal detectors. Him going “FULL BUCK” is a good thing, not a bad thing. He saved that guy’s arm and life.
Buck and Taylor
I was fine with Buck and Taylor being friends. Buck needs non-118 friends. I wasn’t surprised that she kissed him. I just wish we saw her being afraid of commitment or falling for someone whose job is as dangerous as Buck’s or shorting out her own issues instead of just making their wild comments/actions and leaving him.
Buck and Eddie
I don’t need Buck and Eddie to be canon, and I’ve accepted that FOX won’t ever let them be. I love their brotherhood and how they’ve become family. I imagine that happens a lot with first-responders.
Ryan Guzman’s racist nonsense made me want him as far away from Oliver, Aisha and Athena as possible anyway.
I do love that even from his morphine-induced haze Eddie looked so bothered and PAINED by Buck admitting it would have been better if he’d gotten shot instead. He’s been unmoored and alone this season, and finding out about Daniel only confirmed that his parents never wanted him, just what he could do. They even went so far as to show him putting on his bulletproof vest ALONE. And as a pathologically single person, I totally get how he feels. Society is built around families. Single people simply “don’t fit.” And I’m glad Eddie gave Buck a reason to stop taking such wild risks. Calculated or not. “Because EVAN.” So cute.
Miscellaneous
Athena can’t detain or arrest Buck for the next two rockheaded moves he makes because she went into a burning building to shoot a sniper and save her husband’s life. And he helped her.
Poor Maddie. She and Buck deserve some peace and happiness. I hate that we didn’t get to see them together. I’m glad she’s getting help, and I hope she gets to a happy place where she can just enjoy her daughter and her family. I do wish they actually said “Post-partum” or “Post-Natal” Depression in this episode.
Albert becoming a firefighter...meh. I loved the montage at the end with all the families at the end and Albert’s victory. I saw it coming when he arrived. I hope that doesn’t mean he’ll be working at the 118 solely because they separately need more female firefighters. NOT BOSKO.

To say you were surprised to end up at an elementary school would be an understatement. Dean’s group of fascinating people were the kindergarten classes. He even had plastic fireman hats for them, and of course an extra one for you.
The kids were so caught up in his speech about fire safety and the important things to remember if there ever is a fire. He was so good with them and kept them all interested. He finished his presentation talking about Christmas trees and how they should all make sure their parents keep them watered, so the lights don’t catch them on fire.
Dean took questions at the end. Some of the boys wanted to know what it was like to drive the fire truck, someone asked if it was fun to slide down the pole. They were disappointed when Dean told them there wasn’t one where he worked. One little girl at the end ran up and gave him a great big hug before you guys left. He was so adorable with her.
When you left there Dean asked if you were interested in helping him pick out tiles for the kitchen backsplash. You didn’t have anything else to do and had been enjoying helping him with the house so you agreed.
Getting to the store he had three different ones selected and had you help him decide. After the paint he trusted your opinion on the color selection.
They had enough in stock of your choice to let you two get started on it when you got home. The rest would be in soon. You had a system worked out, you put the mastic on the back and Dean applied the tile to the wall.

That afternoon Dean headed into work for another 24 hour shift. The second call of the afternoon was for a house fire. Thankfully for the residents it was mostly contained to one room, just the living room. But that room had a bit of damage done.
Hoping out of the truck back at the station he asks, “Okay who seriously is going to BBQ a turkey in the fireplace. And plan on doing it twice because this was just going to be a test run before Christmas?”
“It’s the Holidays,” Bobby stated. “People are going to be doing crazy things. You’ve been here a few years don’t you know this by now.”
“That is true. Y/N and I were talking about that earlier after we left the school presentation.”
“Wait, WE, left the presentation? Did you take her with you?” Benny wanted to know.
“Well,”
“She’s living with him now, didn’t you know that?” Sam asks him.
“What, really?” Benny couldn’t believe it.
“She moved in a couple days ago.”
“Wow, you two move fast.”
“It’s not like that you idiots. She got kicked out of her condo and had nowhere else to go, and she already got fired because of me. I’m just giving her a place to stay till she figures things out. The house has the room. Our dogs get along great.”
“Is that why Miracle isn’t here?” Cas wants to know.
“Yeah, Y/N’s taking care of him and Dean. He’s falling in love.”
“Who Dean or Miracle?” Cas questions Sam.
“Dean, probably both. She is very easy to like.”
“You’ve met her, besides that day she was in here?” Benny wanted to know.
“Yeah, Dean called me to help move her.”
“I would have helped the nice pretty girl move, why didn’t you ask me to help?”
“I’m not sure packing would have been the only thing you tried with her, Benny. I just found her again, I’m not letting you scare her off.”
“He didn’t deny the love.” Sam says with a smile.
“I’m not falling in love with anyone, bitch.” Dean shakes his head at the whole thing as he removes his gear.
“I’m sorry, my jerk of a brother, is falling in love, but he doesn’t know it yet.”
“That can’t be true Dean, come on man. I look up to you, playing the field avoiding commitment, a constant string of beautiful women.”
“It’s not true, we aren’t falling in love, not dating. I still don’t do commitment, and never getting married.”
“So what are you doing with Miracle if you don’t do commitment?” Bobby asks as he takes off his coat.”
“Temporary long termish house guest.”
“Uh huh.”
“I told him when the house is sold he’s on his own.”
“Let us know how that works out in a couple of months, you idjit.”
“I’m calling your bluff with the girl. Can you say no to these three things.”
“Really Cas?”
Cas ignores Dean and continues on, “ You live with her? That’s a yes. Two, you spend all your free time with her? Yes.”
“Well.”
“Three, you think about her when you aren’t with her? Yes,”
“No, no, you have it all wrong. Like I said she is only staying till she gets back on her feet. We are getting to know each other so we hang out, but only because she’s already there.”
“Getting to know each other like you would if you were dating someone?”
“Shut it Sam.”
“Are you saying he is falling in love? The legend, is human after all?” Benny questioned.
“No, I’m not falling in love. Y/N is a temporary roommate. That’s it.”
“Man, you are like five minutes away from marrying this girl.” Sam tells him.
“I hate you all.” Gear off Dean leaves them behind to take a shower.
“Keep telling yourself that!” Bobby yells after him.
Wandering around Dean’s house alone while he was at work, you got to thinking. There was one thing you were really missing this close to Christmas, and it was something you didn’t think you would be able to have this year. A Christmas tree.
When Dean gets home the next afternoon you bring it up.
“I was wondering if you were going to get a Christmas tree this year?”
“Usually don’t. I don’t think I’ve had one in a few years.”
“Really?”
“Yeah, I haven’t seen a reason too. I buy a house, fix it up and sell it. Usually I don’t stay in one long enough. I don’t do much for the Holidays. Why do you ask?”
“I was thinking maybe we could get a tree? I have a little artificial tabletop tree, but wouldn’t it be nice to have a real one? To have that Christmas smell when you walk in the door?”
“If you like real ones so much why didn’t you already have one in your place?”
“It was against the bylaws. Apparently too much of a fire liability.”
“That didn’t stop you with Dakota.”
“The tree can’t be hidden quickly like she was. She was worth risking it for.”
“You really want to get a tree?”
“Please, it helps it feel more like Christmas. If you don’t want one I understand.”
Dean threw his head back and sighed. “Fine we can go get a tree. I think there is a tree lot near the station that hasn’t sold out yet.”
“Let’s go to a tree farm, get the whole experience.”
“You’ll be the death of me Sweetheart.”
Dean didn’t have to work at all the following day, so after breakfast the two of you headed out to the Christmas tree farm. Dressed in warm clothes and boots you were ready to walk all around the 8 acre tree farm if you needed to, just to find the right tree. There was a wagon ride that took you around to the different types of trees. Dean and you got off in the back lot figuring you could walk your way toward the entrance.

“There’s a tree,” Dean points out as you start walking down the first row.
“Yes, and it’s also like four foot tall. It’s still growing, let the baby be.”
“Okay, miss Christmas tree expert. How do you pick the perfect Christmas tree?”
“It’s really pretty scientific you know.”
“Oh really? Please do explain it to me.”
You laughed at his expression. He had turned to you with wide eyes and a cheeky little grin. Like he was going to absorb whatever you said. “You dork.” Heading over to a tree you reach for a branch pulling your hand back toward you slowly. “First you need to check the freshness. If the needles stay on when you do that it’s good.”
You drop your hand to the side, “Then you need to inhale deeply and see how it smells.”
Dean did just that, “It smells like a tree.”
“Okay, but does it smell Christmassy.”
“Christmassy? Pretty sure you just made that word up.”
“Nope it’s totally in the dictionary.”
“Okay, Webster. Then what does it mean?”
“To be filled with Christmas spirit.”
Dean just stared at you for a moment. “You think a tree is going to smell like it’s filled with Christmas spirit? Just wondering if you were drinking before I got up this morning?”
“Oh come on, it’s that fresh cut pine smell that fills the whole place and makes it feel like Christmas.”
“Whatever you say, I’ll leave the nose work to you. What is step three?” He wants to know as you two walk down the lane looking at the trees around you.
“The lean test. You need to look at a tree straight on, then lean to the right and to the left, then stand back up straight. You don’t want a tree that is leaning too hard one way and is crooked.” You stop to inspect a tree, but continue on down your way.
The fourth step is checking the trunk and making sure nothing is wrong with it. Sometimes the tree might be straight but that isn’t. Or it could have a double one that won’t fit in a tree stand.”
“Height is important too. Your ceilings are fairly high so we could get a foot tree no problem.”
Dean is just smiling listening to you go on about trees while you walk through the lot. “Yep that is extremely scientific.”
You two stopped and looked at different ones but kept going. There was one you stuck a stick up in top of to mark if you didn’t find anything else you liked. Around an hour into your search you stopped in your tracks. Dean was lost in his thoughts and took him a moment to notice.
“That’s the one.”
“The one?”
“Yep, that’s the tree we should get.”
“There is only one? How do you know it’s the one? What if you are wrong, but you’ve already committed to it? What happens then, fighting and hurting the kids?”
“You lost me, Dean.”
“I um,” He just realized what all came out of his mouth. “I mean it’s a great tree. Let’s get that one.”
“You sure you are alright?”
“Yep great. Hold that steady, till I need you to push a little, will you?”
While you were helping to hold the tree from moving too much Dean got on the ground and started sawing back and forth till he had it lying on the ground. You couldn’t help but notice the muscles in his arms as he worked.
The two of you carried the tree toward the path in the hopes the wagon would be around soon and you wouldn’t have to carry it all the way to the front. Thankfully only about five minutes later you could hear it coming around. Up at the front they shook and bagged the tree for you.
They also had Santa, and some petting animals around.
“Did you want to go tell Santa your Christmas wish?” You asked Dean.
“You know, I already saw him this year. He and I are pretty tight.”
“Really?”
“Yep.”
After seeing the animals you hopped in his truck and headed to the store. Neither of you had a stand that would fit the newly bought tree. With that accomplished you were on your way back to the house. Getting the tree inside it was set up in the living room not to far from the fire place, but not near enough to catch any sparks that may pop out.
Dean didn’t have any decorations in the house, but you had some you had been saving. After the lights were on you went to the kitchen to make some hot chocolate for the two of you and pulled out some of the peanut butter blossom cookies you made the day before. Coming back Dean still hadn’t turned on the tv so you asked if you could. Finding the different music channels you finally came across a Christmas one.
The two of you were enjoying the music and each other’s company as you decorated the tree.
It was late afternoon by the time everything was done and cleaned up. You offered to start dinner and Dean came in to help you. The two of you working easily in the newly finished kitchen.
After dinner you two retired back to the living room turning off the lights in the room and just letting the tree shine. There was a roaring fire going, The Santa Clause 2 playing on tv. Chet had to be one of your favorite reindeer in training. It was very relaxing.
After the movie Dean mutes the television and turns to you. “Thank you for suggesting the tree. It’s actually really nice to have it. I don’t remember the last time I truly enjoyed Christmas. My parents fought a lot when we were little after the fire, before and after separating. After we lost them it was just Sam and I. Both of us just worked double shifts on Christmas at the station so others could have the time off. Now Sam has Jess so he works part of the day, but doesn’t do a double anymore so he can spend time with her and her family.
He looks around at the decorations on the mantle, “I wouldn’t be opposed if you had some other small decorations you wanted to get out too.”
“Okay, I’ll see what I have that won’t be in the way.”
He turns the volume back up and the two of you settle back to watch another movie.
Thank you for reading!

Centerfold 1- Another New School

Centerfold Masterlist
Author’s Note: Written for Meghan who requested some fluffy A/B/O smut and then I came up with an idea and ran with it. Smut will start after the plot is established. Also, this is gonna go toward my @spnabobingo squares. This chapter fills my Rose/Gardenia/Amber square and is rated G for General Audiences.
Summary: Dean is a Junior at yet another brand new high school. He meets a sweet young woman in his homeroom and starts a relationship with her.
Pairing: Dean x Y/n
Word count: 1211
Story Warnings: none really, mentions of A/B/O dynamics, overprotective parents
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Dean didn’t like that there were so many miles between the middle school and the high school John registered his sons at in Olympia, Washington. John had the Impala, so Dean had to walk with Sam two miles to his school and then walk four miles to his own. “Gonna have to hit a bar and hustle some cab money. Can’t be doin’ this walk twice a day, Sammy. It’s already killin’ me,” Dean complained.
“At least it’s not winter,” Sam said, sarcastically. “Anyway, Dad will be back soon, ya know?”
“Yeah, I know. It’s a witch hunt, practically a milk run for Dad, but still. I wish he’d left the car or something.”
“It’ll be okay, Dean.”
Dean rolled his eyes as he patted his brother’s shoulder and walked away, disappearing into Jefferson Middle School. He hated this walk and it was the first time he’d even done it. He made it to Olympia High just as the bell rang. Definitely needed some money for cabs. Maybe he could call Bobby, get some cash Western Unioned to him. He definitely wasn’t going to get any more money out of his dad. John always gave him just enough for him and Sam to eat for a couple weeks.
He pulled a paper schedule out of his pocket and sighed. “Homeroom. Mr. Philips. Room C-215. That’s D-100 and that’s D-200, so C Hall will be…” he said to himself, walking toward his classroom. He found C-215 and stepped inside. “Mr. Philips? Dean Winchester. I’m new.” He handed the schedule over to the tall man behind the desk and smiled tightly.
“Right. Take a seat behind Miss Y/l/n in the pink,” Philips said, dismissively, handing the schedule back. Dean nodded and scanned the room for ‘the pink’.
His eyebrows jumped in surprise when his eyes fell on the girl in the second row with the blush pink fuzzy sweater on. She was gorgeous, looked sweet and innocent, smiled at him as he walked down the aisle to slide into the desk behind her. He leaned forward close to her. Whatever perfume she had on smelled amazing. Roses, gardenia maybe...amber? “Miss Y/l/n, huh?” he whispered.
She looked away bashfully and bit her thumbnail. “Shush. Mr. Philips is really mean. Don’t get sent to detention on your first day.”
“You keep talking, we’ll both be there...and that’d be worth it.” She stifled a giggle and looked at her desktop. “Come on, sweetheart. What’s yer name? ‘Less you want me to keep callin’ you, Miss Y/l/n.”
She bit her bottom lip and looked back over her shoulder. “Y/n,” she said.
“Quiet!” Mr. Philips called out from the front of the classroom. “We observe quiet in my classroom, Mr. Winchester.”
“Yeah, sorry. I wasn’t here for the syllabus,” he joked. Y/n giggled and covered her mouth with her hand. Dean thought she was just...adorable. It wasn’t often that he fell into a crush right off the bat, barely knowing her name, but Y/n was just...sweet as sugar...and Dean loved his candy.
“So, I’m new, you wanna show me around?” Dean asked as he followed her down the aisle after homeroom let out. It was every bit of the line it felt like leaving his mouth and part of him doubted she’d fall for it. She seemed like too good a girl to fall for his lines. “I’m sure a smart girl like you knows her way around school...around the neighborhood?”
She turned to him in the hallway just outside the door and smiled brightly. “Dean, right?”
“Yeah.”
“Where’re you from?” she asked.
“Kansas,” he responded, warily. He didn’t understand why she was asking.
“Parents’ names?”
“It’s just my dad,” Dean answered, his jaw tightening.
“I’m sorry,” she said, softly. “But what’s your dad’s name?”
“John.”
“What’s he do for a living?”
“Sells vacuums. Why are you asking all this?” he asked, eyebrows tucked together.
“My parents don’t like me talking to strangers and now you’re not a stranger,” she said with a smile. “If you can find your way to the parking lot after school, I’ll show you around town a bit...and I’ll help you study.”
He got a whiff of her floral scent as she twirled and practically danced away from him and down the hallway. She was something special.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“So, sixteen or seventeen, Dean?” Y/n asked, as she walked across the parking lot with her backpack slung over her shoulder.
“Sixteen...for another three months. You?”
“Seventeen, two months ago,” she responded.
“Are your parents really gonna ask about all that junk you been asking me?”
“Some of it, yeah, but the most important question is ‘what’s your presentation?’” she asked, turning to him and walking backward.
Dean licked his lips and shrugged. “Don’t have one yet. Dad’s alpha, so was our grandpa. Pretty much destined. What about you?”
“Haven’t presented either, but there hasn’t been a female in my family that wasn’t omega in a hundred and fifty years. How’s that for ‘destined’?”
“If I were alpha, your parents wouldn’t let me around you, huh?”
She chuckled. “That’s a hard and fast rule. Even though I’m not an omega yet, I’m not allowed near alphas.”
“Well, thankfully, I’m not alpha yet.”
She smiled and turned back around. “Yeah. Thankfully.” She reached a small red convertible Mercedes and pulled out a set of keys. Dean’s eyes went wide as she popped the trunk and set her backpack in the trunk. “What?” she asked when she noticed the look of shock on his face.
“You...this is your car?”
“Yep! It’s a hand-me-down. It was my mom’s first. Dad bought it for her when she got pregnant with my brothers. A station wagon or a van would’ve been a better choice, of course, but she made it work.”
Dean walked around it. “1980 Mercedes-Benz 280SL. Wow...Euro import with the flush headlights and bumpers. It’s beautiful. You can drive a stick shift?”
“Of course.” She shut the trunk and walked over to the driver’s door. “Get in, Dean. Unless you have a problem with riding shotgun.”
“In a car like this with a girl like you? No problem on my end, sweetheart.” He smiled as he pulled open the door and settled into her passenger seat.
She smiled as she turned the key in the ignition. “Only man I’ve ever had in this car was my dad...he wouldn’t let me drive my own car because the idea of a woman behind the wheel was just too much for him.”
“Sounds like a jerk. No offense.”
She chuckled. “Well, he’s just an alpha, ya know. That’s how they are.”
“Well, I’m not an alpha yet, Y/n, and I think you belong behind the wheel.”
She bit her bottom lip and maneuvered the transmission into first, easing off the clutch and rolling out of the parking space. As he watched her drive, he suddenly wished his father would never come back so Dean would never have to leave. He shook his head when he realized he’d essentially just wished for his father’s death over a pretty girl. He’d never had a girl grab his heart and soul so quickly.

Jail Bird
Author: @anonymous0writer
Warnings: Swearing. Police stuff. Ward Cameron. (Lol) Inferences to sex. And horrible writing. I’m so sorry!
Requested: Yes!
“Can u do a jj fic where y/n is in an interrogation room with the police and that’s where she first sees jj. He sees her surfing and stuff, she is new to the outer banks . She’s really in some deep stuff with ward cameron that’s he wants out of but the cops listen to him. Jj helps her escape and they flirt and talk. She admits ward is trying to control her. He can’t stay at John B’s so JJ let’s her spend the night at his house. But then the dad catches them,”
Summary: You just moved to Outer Banks, but you’re already in deep shit. You’re fathers a dirty business man, and he and Ward Cameron have been in a feud for years. And you’re stuck in the middle. Until a certain blonde in the next cell over offers to help.
A/N: This is long! Sorry! It was so fun to write though!! I love things like this. Also, I know a cop really wouldn’t let both kids out, but Peterkin’s done it before and I took ‘liberties’ with the story. :)
I hope this was close to what you wanted!!!! It’s not my best writing, and I didn’t go into very much detail cus it’d make it wayyyyy too long but, I hope it’s close and you enjoyed!
“Name?”
“Y/N Y/L/N.”
“Age.”
“Don’t you have this on a file or something?” You protest, but the officer gives you a hard look. “Seventeen in a month.”
“Good. Now we’re going to ask you a few questions,”
You rolled your eyes. You’ve done this before. In your old town, you weren’t a stranger to shop lifting here and there. But this was new. You’ve never been in an interrogation room before. Or handcuffed. And if you weren’t in a police station, you’d be up for the kink. But this was serious. But this situation pissed you off. You’d literally just moved to Outer Banks. And now you were already at the police station. Your mother would be pissed.
You smirked at the officer. He glared, and seated himself across from you. You shifted in your cold metal seat, wrists tugging at the cuffs digging into your flesh. You winced slightly as your skin was rubbed raw.
“Why were you at the Cameron’s house?”
“I wasn’t. I was unpacking my room. I just moved here.”
If there was one thing you learned from dealing with the cops was that they assumed you were lying or had something to hide if you gave short responses. More information, they would ease up a little more.
“When?”
“On the fifth. So, two weeks ago.” You replied.
“Have you been here for two weeks?”
“No. I was going back and forth with my brother from our old house, in Virginia. We were still getting furniture and everything while my parents got everything ready here.”
“Who are your parents?”
You gave him a look. When he arrested you, he should’ve looked who you were already. You had a record after all. Which you were half proud of in any other situation, but now, it didn’t help.
“Derrick and Ellen Y/L/N.” You answered since the cop didn’t let up.
You glared at your cuffs, they were hurting. Your skin was rimmed with angry red circles. You tugged at them in a vague attempt to get them off.
“Can you get these off? They’re starting to itch.”
“No.”
You huffed. Rude. You silently asked yourself how you ended up here.
~
It all started a month ago. You had a small house in Virginia, but your parents were looking for houses in North Carolina.
You’re father was a business man. You knew he dabbled in very shady things, but tried to stay out of it. So when your parents announced you were moving, you were suspicious. After all, they chose the rich rich side of the Outer Banks. There was no way your father had gotten that money realistically that fast. Your father wasn’t a good man. But your mother was, but she was blind to him and his dealings. You think.
So a week later, you were practically all packed up. At least the essentials you need for your new house in OBX. You were going to buy new furniture. But only for the kitchen, dining, and living room. Because those were ‘show’ rooms. Rooms other people would see.
So after you officially moved, it was you and your brother Ian’s job to get the beds and other furniture. The big stuff you kept. So over the week and a half, you and Ian kept going back and forth. So you only had a couple days to finish your room and explore your new home.
But you’d been dragged into the police station two days later.
And you had a big suspicion it was Ward Cameron’s doing.
Ward Cameron. King Kook of OBX. Your father and him had a rivalry for a long time. Your father used to live in OBX on the Cut, and he grew up with Ward. They were enemies through out high school. And they grew to have rival businesses. You knew Ward wasn’t a good guy. Even remotely, but you were sure at least a little bit of the fortune he had was actually worked for. Unlike your father.
So moving to the birthplace of your father and the home of Ward Cameron was bound to have issues.
But you barely had time to settle into life as Kook in the Outer Banks. You weren’t used to such a big house. Or the maid. Or the pool, or money. Of course it was fake or dirty, but still. A Kook is a Kook. But in reality, you were a Pogue posing as a Kook.
~
“Alright, we’re going to put you in a cell while we contact your parents.” The officer grunted, gripping your arm as he lead you to the holding cells.
He let you walk in by yourself and closed the door. Immediately you gripped the bars.
“Oh come on, man! Can’t you take these off at least?” You protested, holding up your bound hands.
The officer shook his head and without another word, left. You scoffed and stepped back. “Asshole.” You muttered before finding the bench and sitting on it. You sat there for a while.
Your charge: breaking and entering in the Cameron’s house.
Ward Cameron. You knew you were gonna get in trouble sooner or later by his hand. Just not this soon. Or this outrageous. If felt like you stepped a foot outside of your house and boom, cuffs were snapped onto your wrists.
With a sudden burst of rage you sat up and smack the wall with your fist. “Fucking Ward Cameron!”
You ignored the splitting pain in your fist, but sat back down and cradled it. Your head snapped up as a laugh traveled to your ears. You looked to your left, where the bars revealed a boy with blonde hair sitting in the next cell over.
He grinned at you, his eyes flashing. You studied him. Bright blue eyes, a shit eating smirk. Blonde hair. Backwards cap. Tan skin, toned muscles, sleeveless shirt, shorts. Looked like a native. Looked like a asshole too.
“What is a girl like you doing in here?”
You quirked a brow. “I apparently broke and entered a Richie’s house.”
You had come up with your own nickname for Kooks with Ian on one of the long car rides. It was funny to you, and you knew you were about to become one, but you weren’t really one. Once again. A Pogue posing as a Kook.
The boy smirked. “Richie?”
You shrugged. “I don’t like Kook.”
“You must be new. I’d remember that pretty face.”
You rolled your eyes at the flirt, but it broke away to a smile. “Just moved here.”
“My bad.” The boy said and moved closer to the division between you two. “JJ.”
“Y/N.” You answered, taking another look at the boy. He was cute. Scratch that. Hot. And a hundred percent player. “Why are you here?”
“Same old.” JJ smirked. “The police like to arrest me for begin too hot.”
That killed your attraction. Hot and cocky didn’t go together. You knew some girls could focus on the hot, but you were the type to need a good personality. You rolled you eyes and turned away. After a couple beats of silence, JJ spoke.
“Did you actually break and enter?”
“Nope.” You gave him a quick glance. “Set up.”
JJ clicked his tongue. “I was smoking weed. Apparently you can’t do that.”
You smirked. “Really? I was counting on that, moving here.”
“Sorry to burst your bubble.”
After a while, you turned to the boy. He’d redeemed himself. He was funny, and you always appreciated a guy with humor.
“Do they usually take this long?”
“Pretty slow around here.” JJ grinned, showing you his teeth. “Island time.”
You nodded, laughing a little. “Virginia doesn’t run that way.”
“I can get you out of here.”
That got your attention. “Really?”
He nodded and pulled out a bobby pin from his jeans. You approached the bars, thrusting your hands forward so he could release you from the rings of pain.
“This isn’t my first rodeo.” He says, and soon the cuffs click and go slack. You pull them off, rubbing your sore wrists.
“Thanks.”
JJ meets you eyes and winks. But you frowned. “How are we gonna get out of the cell?”
“I have a plan. Don’t worry, Y/N.”
You can’t help it, but your stomach flops at the way he says your name. You nod and wait.
“Peterkin!” JJ yells, calling for someone you don’t know.
Soon enough, footsteps and a dark skinned cop comes around the corner. She ‘tsks’ at the blonde haired boy before you.
“JJ,” She says disapprovingly. She gives you a quick glance, but you’re seated on the bench, seemingly uninterested. “What’s this about.”
JJ motions to the door. “C’mon. You know I’m a good kid. I promise I won’t do it again.” JJ pleads.
Peterkin sighs heavily. “Alright.”
You blink. Cops back in your town hated you. Even before you committed your first crime. They’d never be this easy. You eyed JJ. There must be something about JJ that coaxes sympathy out of the cop that you don’t know.
She opens the door with her thick set of keys and the door creaks open. You are so surprised. Dirty cop? JJ walks out of the cell, smiling sweetly at the cop.
“Thanks.”
“Not again, JJ.” She eyes you. “What are you in for?”
“I was framed for breaking and entering.”
Her brows raised. “Ah. You’re the Ward Cameron case.”
“Yes ma’am.” You answered, still not knowing what JJ’s plan was. He better get you out of here, or he was exactly who you thought he was. And you’d been looking forward to getting to know the boy.
“If you go, because you were falsely accused, will you keep your mouth shut?” She asks.
“Yes ma’am.” You nod and stand. Peterkin eyes the discarded handcuffs and a smile tugs at the corner of your lips. She shakes her head.
“You have to pay bail. Both of you. I can arrest both you for refusing to pay, so don’t think about avioding it.” She eyes you hard. “And I know about your record, Missy. Don’t think I’ll be easy next time I see you in the cell.”
“Of course. I won’t.”
She takes it and lets you out. “Alright. Get out of here kids.” She walks away.
You gape at the blonde. “How the hell is it that easy to get out of jail?”
JJ shakes his head. “It’s not. Trust me. I’ve been there enough to know she rarely does that.”
You nod. As JJ starts to move, you follow him. He leads you through an empty hall and you bolt outside the station. The sun beats down on your back. You forgot how hot is was. You’re used to the air conditioned. You haven’t been out much.
You run after JJ as you get far enough away that you won’t be dragged back. You stop under the shade of a palm tree. You stand there for a beat, catching your breath. You look around, it’s nice and warm. A cute town. JJ watched you admire the street and smiles. After a second he asks you a question.
“Where do you live?”
You laugh. He’s straightforward. You like that. “You’re gonna have to try harder if you want to get my number.” You answer, smirking.
He grins and takes off his hat to run a hand through his messy blonde hair. “Alright.” He pauses. “Where you from?”
It takes a second, but you understand. He’s asking what side of the island you belong to. The Cut or Figure Eight. You shrug. “Doesn’t matter. I can’t go home.” You meet his beautiful eyes. “My mother will kill me.”
JJ nods. “You’re a Kook.”
You quirk a brow. “How’d you know?”
“Kooks are always freaked out by jail. And you knew Ward Cameron.”
“Okay, fair. Are you from the cut?”
“Pogue through and through.”
You nod. You can’t go home, but you have no idea what to do. And you want to keep talking to the blonde before you.
“You wanna tour of the island?”
You send a silent thank you to the boy as you nod. “Yeah. That’d be great.”
He smiles and starts heading down the sidewalk, leaving you to catch up. The sun heats your back and illuminates everything around you in a summery light. You didn’t even realize how pretty and nice summers were here. You and JJ fall into light conversation. You ask about each others lives, lightly digging up facts and tidbits of your past. JJ takes an unexpected turn, making you startle. You start down a path that leads to a beach. You stare at the wide expanse of pale sand and blue waters.
JJ smirks at your expression. “Welcome to Outer Banks. Paradise on earth.”
You laugh at the slogan and smile. You stare at the waves crashing in and out. “I could surf here.”
“You surf?” The boy questions, stuffing his hands in his pockets.
You shrug one shoulder. “Not really. My brother’s teaching me.”
JJ catches your eye. “I could teach you. You know, I’m pretty good.”
“Wow, modest.” You grin at each other for second and then you both start down the beach again. You don’t talk, falling into a comfortable silence. Despite yourself, you’re really starting to like him. Maybe jail was a god send today.
You walk down the beach for a while, dancing in and out of conversation. Until your phone buzzes in your back pocket. Frowning, you pull out the phone. Once you check to see who it is, you blank.
“Shit,” You mutter as you see the blinking call sign and you’re mother face and contact above it.
JJ peers at the screen, and glances up to see your expression. “Is she still mad?”
“Beyond.” You sigh and put the phone back in your pocket, ignoring it. “But she’s always like that. I’ve learned that I need to giver her a day to cool off before I head home.”
JJ quirks a brow. “You’ve done this before.”
You lift a shoulder. “Back in Virginia, I was known to shop lift. Just a little. Ended up farther in jail than that.”
You throw a thumb back in the general direction of the station. JJ laughs. “So are you homeless?”
“For the night.” You answer without thinking. If you are, where are you gonna end up? On a bench? Crawling into your room at three am? You glance at the boy in front of you. Does he think you were asking him for a place to stay? You swallow and try to cover up by gesturing to the beach. “Should we continue our tour?”
JJ nods and you start walking, yet again. The sun is dipping lower on the horizon, and you know you’re going to face your sleeping situation soon enough. Back in Virginia, you usually crashed at a friends house. Or Ian’s apartment above the garage. Ian was taking a gap year before he headed off to college to travel, but that was put on the back burner because he needed to save more money and you moved.
After a while, JJ turns his blue eyes on you, and you can tell he’s searching for something. An answer.
“What’s with you and the Cameron's?”
You sigh, tucking your hands into your back pocket. “My father. He and Ward go way back. They used to go to high school together. They were both from the Cut and determined to get out of there. But they were rivals and have been every since.” You catch JJ’s eye and notice he’s watching and listening to you. All his attention on your words. Something about the way he was so intent on listening and paying attention made you want to tell him everything. Your life story. You wanted to tell this boy- one you just met (not to mention in a jail cell)- everything about you. What kind of ice cream you loved, your favorite color. What you wanted to study in college. Where you wanted to live.
So you kept talking, the words flowing naturally out of your mouth. “My dad’s an asshole. And a dirty business man. I mean, we weren’t well off in Virginia. And then suddenly he gets so much money he moves us. Not to mention in a very expensive home. On a beach.” You sigh, watching the sand and your feet as they carry to closer to the end of the beach. “So really I’m a pogue posing as a Richie.”
“Thank god.” JJ sighs. You head snaps up, confused. JJ grins at your confused expression. “I don’t like Kooks. But you’re a Pogue, so we’re good.”
You smile lightly, and then ease into a conversation. About your life. About his life. You learn all his little interests. And he learns how you broke your arm in third grade because Rebecca Pearson pushed you off the tree house. And how you love the color blue because it reminds you of the ocean and you’ve always been fascinated and in awe of it. You learn about how his mom died and how he’s just with his dad. How he’s a really good surfer. How he really wants a dog, but can’t have one. And you learn about his ‘family’ as he calls them. His friends: John B. who’s been his best friend since second grade; Kiara, the girl who’s got a foot in both worlds and big about the turtles; and Pope, the brains of the group who’s fathers a legend around the island.
By the time you lapse back into silence, the sun’s practically gone and the sky is darkening. You bite your lip. Maybe you do have to go home tonight.
JJ catches your worry. “You can come to my house if you want.”
You raise your eyebrows, surprised. JJ smirks. “I won’t make a move, don’t worry.”
You laugh. “Really? It’s totally fine. I can face my mom, promise.” You feel you’d be over stepping your fragile and new friendship.
He shakes his head. “No, look, it’s alright. I wouldn’t want to face my dad after I did something like that. I get it. It’s no big deal anyway.”
Something flashed in his eyes that you didn’t understand. But you knew he wanted to help you, and part of you wanted to go home with him. As more than a friend. So you agreed.
And naturally, as you started towards the surfer’s house, the flirting and sexual tension was amped up. His jokes got dirtier, and your flirting was becoming more and more obvious. And you weren’t scared of where it was headed. You definitely weren’t someone who slept around, but you did have a fair amount of boyfriends, and there was something about JJ. Something that made you fall instantly. It was the same thing that made you want to tell him everything about yourself. He was a strange magnet. With those eyes and words, he could easily pull you into his orbit, and you could feel yourself spilling into it. But you weren’t scared of it.
That’s why when his lips hit yours in the living room of his house, you kissed back just as hungrily. And when his hands slipped under your shirt, you arched into his touch and smiled as his lips traveled to suck on your neck. His fingers were magic, able to erupt want and need as he trailed them along your skin. And his lips were a sin sure to send you to hell. They sucked and put a welcome pressure along your body.
JJ pulled you with him to his room, where you stripped down without another thought. There was something so right and natural about this. You felt something when his eyes landed on you in the cell. And when you talked, you clicked. It was like the final puzzle piece you didn’t realize you missed until you had the whole picture. You’d been searching for it, and it finally clicked into place. And JJ, the boy before you, was that missing piece. No matter how crazy it sounded.
It was a blur of hot lips and heavy breathing. And pleasure exploding through every atom of your body as he hit spots you didn’t even know you had. You rolled around in the sheets, bodies aching for more and hearts beating rapidly. His touch was everywhere when your lips covered his skin with tiny whispers of love. The moment was perfect and he was perfect. And when you were done, sweaty and exhausted, you fit perfectly in his arms. Like you were made for him.
You turned in his arms to face him, eyes heavy with exhaustion, but you needed to say something. JJ watched you, blonde hair messy and sticking up in the places you tugged at. You smiled at the memory flooding your brain.
“Thank you for offering to save me, JJ.”
He grinned, eyes lighting up. “Any time, baby.”

October 1994
“Ow.”
You groaned as you collapsed in the middle seat of the back of Bobby’s car, so tired that you practically fell asleep the second you got off your feet. It was your second weekend in a row of playing all day shows, and every part of your body was screaming at you in exhaustion.
“Remind me why we’re happy about this gig again?” Alex grumbled from the passenger seat, stretching out his no-doubt sore fingers.
Next to you, Reggie had slumped in his seat. “I can’t feel my legs.”
Even Luke, who was usually still full of adrenaline after a performance, looked a little deflated as he secured his guitar into the trunk and piled into the car. As soon as he sat down in his usual seat on your left, he dropped his entire weight on you, making you fall into Reggie.
“You okay there, Lu?” You asked as you sat as up-right as you could with him still leaning on your shoulder. He muttered sleepily in response and you laughed. “Guys, I think Luke’s dead.”
“I don’t blame him. I’m pretty sure that’s the hardest we’ve ever played.” Bobby sighed as he pulled out of the parking lot and started to drive in the direction of Reggie’s house to drop him off. You relaxed into your seat, watching the lights fly by the window. You all sat in comfortable silence until Bobby pulled up to a red light and turned around to look at all of you. “Votes for just crashing at the garage?”
You agreed immediately since the studio was a lot closer than any of your houses, and having Bobby drive when he was tired probably wasn’t the smartest idea.
“I could definitely go for not going home.” Alex said and you smiled at him sympathetically. Reggie agreed and turned to ask Luke, but all he got was the sound of quiet snoring in response. You all laughed as Bobby turned around and started driving to his house.
The quiet rumble of the car on the road and the warmth of Luke’s skin against yours was making you more and more tired by the second. You leaned over and rested your head on top of his and closed your eyes.
The drive to the garage was shorter than you thought, but by the time you got there, you were practically ready to pass out.
It took all your energy to gently coax Luke out of your shoulder and hop out of the car to help Bobby unload the equipment out of the trunk and back into the loft. While you were up there, you grabbed a pile of sleeping bags and blankets to give to the boys who were now arguing over what to watch.
They settled on The Empire Strikes Back, per Reggie’s request. You watched it absentmindedly from your spot on the couch, wrapped up in a cocoon of blankets. The more time went by, the more your tiredness faded away, leaving you restless and frustrated. When the movie reached the halfway point, you had officially given up on sleeping.
You didn’t realize that you were sighing until Luke, who was laying on the floor under your head, opened his eyes. “You okay?”
“Yeah, sorry. I didn’t mean to wake you.” You muttered.
“It’s okay, I can’t sleep either.” Luke said. “Not when Alex snores like a bear.”
You laughed, looking over to Alex who was sleeping deeply across the room, his snore blocking out the sound of the movie. “Yeah, thank god he’s the only one that does that.”
“Are you trying to say that I snore?” Luke gasped, squinting when you laughed and nodded your head at him. After a minute of silence, Luke looked up at you. “Can I ask you something?”
“Yeah, of course.” You said.
“Why didn’t you want to go home?” He asked. “Everything okay with your mom?”
“Yeah, she’s just been working a lot lately and it feels weird being home alone.” You said. “What about your mom?”
Luke was quiet for a minute, so quiet that you almost thought that he fell asleep until he let out a deep sigh. He had told you that things were getting rockier between him and his parents everyday but you could tell by the grimace on his face that something more was going on. “She threatened to make me quit the band.”
“Wait, what?” You said a little too loudly.
“I got an F on a test and she flipped out.” Luke explained. “But if I pass the next one, hopefully she’ll stay off me for a while.”
“I’m surprised that she even let you stay here tonight.” You said.
“Yeah, about that.” Luke cringed. “I didn’t exactly ask her.”
You sighed and shook your head. “You know she’s gonna kill you when you go home tomorrow, right?”
He rolled his eyes but then quickly switched to his puppy-dog look. “Come with me?”
“What? No, I’m not gonna be your accomplice.”
“Please?” Luke begged. “She loves you, and there’s no way she’d kill me if you were there.”
You sighed, cursing yourself for not being able to resist his stupid face. “Fine, but you owe me.”
“Yes, Ma’am.” Luke beamed.
You reached your arm from the couch and pushed his face lightly. “Go to sleep, weirdo.”
-
2020
Being dead was boring.
You had poured over your songbook a dozen times, walked laps around the studio, and absentmindedly threw darts against the wall.
Normally, you would drag Alex out into the city or make Reggie sing country songs with you, but everyone was off getting ready for the gig tonight.
So with nothing better to do, you decided to visit Julie at school. You closed your eyes and poofed into the crowded hallway. You spotted Julie putting books into her locker and you phased right next to her.
“Hi.” You greeted and Julie jumped, letting out a quiet squeal.
“(Y/n)! Normal people don’t do that and ghosts definitely shouldn’t. “What are you doing here?” She asked, smiling awkwardly at people who were giving her weird looks as they passed down the hall.
“Well, I think we should decide what song we’re going with tonight.” You said and Julie tilted her head at you and squinted, knowing that you weren’t telling the whole truth. “Okay, and I was also really bored at the studio.”
“So I’m your entertainment?” She questioned as she dug her phone out of her pocket and raised it to her ear so it didn't look like she was talking to herself.
“Yep, you’re stuck with me.” You smiled sweetly.
“Who knew ghosts were so clingy?” She joked, struggling to hold back a smile when you pouted back at her. “Aren’t you supposed to be hanging out with that mysterious guy from the café last night? Teddy?”
“I figured I’d be too busy getting ready for the gig so I just swung by and told him to come to the show.” You explained, making Julie raise her eyebrows. “What?”
“Nothing.” She clicked her tongue. "I’m sure Luke is gonna love that.”
You rolled your eyes. “Yeah, well, Luke doesn’t get to have an opinion.”
“I don’t get to have an opinion on what?” A voice asked from behind you and you whirled around to find Luke leaning against the lockers with a smile. You had been so distracted talking to Julie that you didn’t even hear him phase in behind you.
“The fact that we’re doing ‘Edge of Great’ tonight.” You said quickly, desperately hoping that he bought your lie. Thankfully, he seemed to believe you.
“Sweet. That’s what I was thinking anyway.” He turned to Julie. “Hey, why not ditch school today? Let’s go rehearse!”
“What? No, I can’t. I promised my dad that school comes first. Plus, I have the dance with Nick today.” She reasoned and you smirked, thinking back at the way that he was staring at her at the dance.
“Ooh, Nick.” You teased and Julie glared at you. After a brief second, her eyes widened. You turned to see Nick walking towards her and you quickly grabbed Luke’s wrist and dragged him to the side so they could talk. "Speak of the devil."
“Hey, Julie!” Nick smiled warmly. “Ready for our performance?”
“Yeah, we’re gonna do great.” Julie shoved her phone into her bag, clearly trying not to look over at you and Luke who were watching with rapt attention.
“I’m glad you’re confident. I think that after three classes, I just got worse. But good thing I have my secret weapon.” Nick nervously shoved his hands in his pockets and you couldn’t help but smile at Nick’s way of awkwardly flirting.
Next to you, Luke whooped. “Oh, I think someone’s got a little crush on our Julie.”
You cringed a little as you looked over at him, expecting to see jealousy on his face. But if anything, he looked the exact opposite. Amused and eager to tease Julie about it, the same way he did back when Reggie tried to hit on girls after a gig. He caught you looking at him and softly smiled, a dramatic shift from the teasing smirk he had on a second ago.
“Shut up,” Julie said to Luke, cringing when Nick frowned at her. “I mean, shut up.”
“No, seriously, Molina. I’m nothing without you.” He said. You walked behind Nick, peering over his shoulder to make kissy faces at her which made Luke laugh.
"I'm sure you'll be great." She pushed his shoulder, making you jump back a little. “See you in there?"
“Yeah, I’ll be the guy trying not to make us look stupid.” You watched him walk away before turning to Julie.
"Julie, he totally likes you!" You laughed excitedly.
"Boundaries." She reminded you, but there was a smile on her face. You and Luke both raised your hands in surrender and she waved over her shoulder as she walked away. "I'll see you guys after school, okay?"
Once she was gone, Luke shook his head dramatically. "They grow up so fast."
You snorted. "C'mon, dork. Let's go rehearse."
-
After getting back to the studio, you immediately snapped into pre-gig mode.
You collapsed on the floor near the couch, sticking your legs up against the armrest next to Reggie as you all listened to Luke go over the song, he ran his pencil along the paper. "So we add the echoes and then the girls come in with the melody.”
You nodded. “Julie gets home in like an hour and then we can start rehearsing.”
Suddenly, there was a loud thud on the garage door and you spun around just in time to see Willie’s head disappear. You frowned and looked over at Alex for an explanation but he just shook his head.
“Again? What’s that about?” Reggie asked but Alex had already poofed out to chase the other boy. You frowned as you stared at the space where he was just sitting, thinking about how happy he was about Willie not even two days ago.
Just as quickly as he left, Alex came phasing back in with a hurt look on his face. You immediately sat up to question him but he just strolled over to his drums and suggested starting practice.
You all agreed reluctantly and got into place. Luke counted down and started to play, stopping almost immediately as Alex started going off course, slamming on his drums a little harder than necessary.
“Al, you okay?” You asked gently as he set down his drumsticks.
“Yeah, why?”
“I know it’s tough, man. They say you never forget your first ghost.” Reggie tried to reassure him. “But I’m sure there will be others.”
“Yeah, and you’re a great drummer and an even greater guy.” You added. “Don’t let all this get in the way of your music.”
“I don’t know. Sometimes a little fire can make things better on stage.” Reggie said, pointing between you and Luke. “Like you guys.”
You were thankful that Luke was behind you and couldn’t see the look on your face. You glared at Reggie but he just smirked back at you, and you made a mental note to kick his ass later.
“What’s your point, Reg?” Playing dumb probably wasn’t your best move, but you could you really didn’t want to make things awkward with Luke again.
“I’m just saying when you play your little on-stage game,” Reggie said. “You guys ooze chemistry.”
“You should never say ‘ooze’ again, but yeah, I agree.” Alex piped up from behind his drums, giving you a shit-eating grin. Great, now you had two asses to kick.
You looked back at Luke to find him already staring at you as he rubbed the back of his neck. You shared a bashful smile before looking everywhere but each other.
“Yeah, but I have chemistry with everyone I sing with.” Luke reasoned, sounding a little panicked. “Watch.”
He walked over to Reggie and sang directly in his face, making you and Alex struggle not to laugh.
“I see chemistry.” Alex joked.
“That was pretty hot.” Reggie admitted as Luke kissed his fingers and pressed them against Reggie’s lips, making him sputter awkwardly. “Girls, am I right?”
Luke laughed as he walked back over to his spot and tugged his guitar strap over his shoulder. “Yeah.”
“No.” Alex said with a smile, making you burst out laughing.
-
Hours later, you stood on your tip-toes, peering out at the crowd that had grown enough to fill the entire driveway.
As they all waited for the show to start, you reached down and felt the outline of your parent’s photo shoved in your pocket. You patted it for good luck, the way you always did before a performance.
Julie stood in front of the garage doors as they were pulled open. There was a wave of applause and Julie settled behind her mic, greeting everyone before starting her solo. Her voice rang out clear over the soft piano, and everyone watched intently, waiting for the rest of you to appear. On top of the balcony, the fake projector clicked on and you took your cue, smiling at the crowd as your voice joined Julie’s.
Just like every time you made your entrance, everyone gasped in surprise and cheered.
You did your best to pose as you sang and danced around, trying to get everyone hyped up. A few people held up their cameras and took pictures, one girl holding her phone so close to your face that you were a little worried that it would go through your head.
Out of the corner of your eye, there was a sudden bright light. For a second, you thought it was just another person taking a picture with their flash, but then you looked over to see Teddy leaning against the wall. He waved a little and you gave him a small smile before going back to the song.
Just as Luke’s verse started, he followed your eyes and saw Teddy, his usual charming smile faltering for a second before locking eyes with you.
Then it was time for your verse with Julie, so you turned away from Luke and strolled towards the piano, watching as Julie crawled on top of it. You followed her lead and sat on the edge, facing the audience and launching into the lyrics.
You could hear Teddy cheering loudly to your right, catching the attention of the whole band, but mostly Luke. As the music softened, Luke suddenly abandoned his spot behind his microphone and was now slowly walking towards you.
He started playing a solo that definitely wasn't planned and almost drowned out the sound of both your and Julie’s voices. When you turned around, you found that he was only a few feet away.
Luke put on his flirty, on-stage face as he slowly inched forward until he was right in front of you. But there was another layer under it. Something sharper and completely unfamiliar. You must’ve seen a hundred different expressions on Luke's face but he had never looked at you like that before.
You tried to look over Julie, who was looking at the two of you with a smirk, but Luke seemed determined to keep your attention. You were extremely grateful that you couldn't blush because you would've been bright red.
The bubble was broken as the chorus started up again and Luke smirked at you one last time before walking back to his microphone. The crowd roared and you took a breath, mentally cursing him and his stupid face for distracting you.
The soft piano came back in and the boys phased away as you and Julie finished the song. You bowed and disappeared, poofing back into the garage.
-
It was just after dark when the last of the crowd went home.
Julie stayed around for a while but she eventually went inside too, leaving the four of you alone in the cold night air.
You sat on the concrete of the driveway, your songbook propped up on your knee as you watched the boys play basketball. You cheered them on and absentmindedly scribbled doodles on the corners of pages of your old songs.
There was a sharp pop in the air and you looked up to see Teddy standing at the end of the driveway, his hands in his pockets as he walked closer.
You had been so caught up in Luke during the performance and then celebrating with the band afterward that by the time you went to look for Teddy, he had disappeared. You quickly got up and brushed off your legs before running to meet him.
“Hey! There you are, you kinda disappeared.” You said and Teddy cleared his throat.
“Yeah, sorry. Uh, can we walk somewhere? We really need to talk.” Teddy said and you cringed when you realized that it suddenly went completely quiet behind you.
You looked back at your friends who were all watching you with different expressions. Reggie looked almost nervous as he fidgeted with the basketball in his hands. Next to him, Alex stared Teddy down with his trademark intense glare and Luke just stood there with his arms crossed as he stared into the street behind you.
“Yeah, okay.” You said quickly, hoping to avoid any more awkwardness. You went to lead Teddy away when suddenly the boys stumbled back, groaning painfully as they were hit with another shock. “Shit!"
Without fully meaning to, you ran to Luke first, quickly inspecting him and watching him carefully as he winced in pain. You glanced over to Reggie and Alex to make sure they were okay before turning back to Luke.
“It’s getting worse.” Luke told you as he rubbed his chest.
“Why is this happening to us?” Reggie asked.
Suddenly, a familiar voice cut through the air. "It’s because you guys are in serious trouble.”
You whipped around to see Willie nervously wringing his hands as he stepped into the light.
Alex took a step closer to him, looking dazed like he couldn’t believe what he was seeing. “Willie?”
“Like I said,” Teddy said suddenly, making everyone look at him. “We need to talk.”
-
Even though you weren’t supposed to be able to get cold anymore, a chill overtook your whole body as you walked down the street.
You could hear everyone talking in front of you but your brain had shut off after Willie explained the basics the first time. Not only was he secretly working for an evil club owner, but Teddy, who you thought was your friend, was teaming up with him in order to steal your soul and make you and your best friends play in a house band for all eternity.
Your brain was so full that you felt like any more information would make you short-circuit.
“So, all these shocks are because of the stamps that Caleb put on us?” Luke asked, pulling you out of your thoughts.
“He’s threatened by you,” Willie explained as he stopped in the middle of the sidewalk and whipped around. “You’re the only ghosts that lifers can see without his help.”
Alex, who had been just as quiet as you this whole time suddenly spoke up. “And you let him do this to us?”
“I can’t stop him.” Willie tried to defend himself. “He owns my soul!”
“He owns half of Hollywood’s souls.” Teddy butted in. “It’s kind of his thing.”
Willie took a deep, unsteady breath. “If he even knew we were here talking to you…”
He didn’t finish, but from the pained look on his face, you could tell that he couldn’t have been going anywhere good with that sentence.
Next to you, Reggie crossed his arms. “So if we don’t join his club, this power outage keeps going on until there’s no power left?”
Willie nodded and Reggie scoffed. “And what exactly happens when the power goes out?”
Teddy cleared his throat. “You disappear forever. No crossing over, you just...stop existing.”
“So we have no choice?” Luke snapped as he glared at Teddy. “We have to leave our friend, our band, behind to work for Caleb forever?”
“There is another option.” Teddy said. “If you could figure out your unfinished business, you could cross over in time and be free from all of it.”
“Okay, so what’s our unfinished business?” Luke asked.
“I don’t know.” Teddy gestured to all of you. “But since you all died at the same time, it’s probably something you have to do together.”
“Why should we listen to anything either of you has to say?” Alex said as he glared at both Teddy and Willie. He sounded so betrayed that it made your stomach turn.
“Because I care about you, Alex.” Willie pleaded. “I hate that it’s my fault that you and your friends are in this mess.”
It was quiet for a minute before he looked around anxiously. “I can’t be gone any longer. I’m sorry.”
With that, he disappeared.
“Don’t be too hard on Willie,” Teddy said once he was gone. “He wanted out of the plan the minute Caleb told us everything.”
“And what about you?” You asked, trying to contain your anger and Teddy sighed.
“(Y/n), I know that being your friend started out as a lie,” He pleaded. “But it’s not anymore.”
“You really expect me to believe that?” You scoffed.
“Look, I know you don’t know me, but I know you.” He ran a hand through his hair. “I know how much Cece cared about you, and I know that this isn’t what she would’ve wanted.”
As if everything wasn’t enough, being reminded of Cece made you feel even worse. Teddy was your last connection to her and now you couldn't even stand to be near him. “I think you should go.”
“(Y/n), please-” Teddy tried to take a step closer to you but Alex fixed him with a look so intense that he backed up almost immediately. With a sigh, he phased away, leaving the four of you out on the street alone.
“This is all my fault.” Alex said, his voice breaking a little. “I met Willie, and he introduced us to Caleb.”
“Alex, no.” You shook your head. “This isn’t anyone’s fault.”
“We have to tell Julie.” Reggie said, washing a new wave of sadness over all of you.
“We can’t.” You said. “She’s lost too much already.”
“If we don’t want Caleb to own our souls, we need to figure out our unfinished business.” Luke started walking further down the street.
“And how are we supposed to do that?” Alex asked as you all followed him. “There was so much that we wanted to do.”
Luke suddenly stopped in the middle of the sidewalk, his eyes trailing up to the buildings. “The night we died, there was one thing we wanted to do together.”
You followed his eyes to see the Orpheum’s sign casting a blue glow on the street. “Play the Orpheum?”
“Getting that gig was impossible,” Alex said. “We had to call in favors and impress who knows how many club owners. It took us years.”
Just as the last word got out, they were hit with another shock. You cringed in sympathy and rested your hand on Alex’s arm.
“We don’t have years.” Luke said through a groan as he clutched his chest.
-
Everyone went their separate ways once you made it back to the garage.
Reggie went up to the house, and Alex barely sat still for five minutes before he left to go on a walk, leaving just you and Luke.
You sat on the rungs of the loft's ladder, staring up at the ceiling as you tried to process everything that's happened. Getting so close to living out your dream only to die and become a ghost, finding out that people could still hear you play, Bobby betraying all of you, meeting Julie and Teddy. It all felt so unreal.
There is no way you’d believe any of it if someone told you all this would happen back when you were alive.
Suddenly, Luke appeared at the base of the ladder, frowning up at you. "Uh-oh. You’re perched up there again.”
“What?” You questioned.
“In your thinking spot.” Luke laughed. “Why do you think we all called you ‘Batman’ in seventh grade?”
"How could I not be thinking right now, Lu?" You said as you carefully slid down to the floor, and Luke backed up slightly to give you space. “I mean, we just found out that we have to play an impossible gig and cross over or you guys will-”
The words died in your throat. You couldn’t even bring yourself to talk about possibly losing any of them. Just thinking about it opened a black hole in your chest.
But there was something else on your mind too. Even though you told Alex that it wasn’t anyone’s fault, you couldn’t help but feel guilty about trusting Teddy. But for Cece’s sake, you wanted to believe that he was actually your friend.
You wanted to tell Luke everything you were thinking, or at least try to explain why you didn’t take his advice. But of course, Luke already knew what was going on inside your head.
“None of this is your fault, Squeaks.” He reassured. Your lips quirked up slightly at the nickname. You almost couldn’t remember the last time he called you that and hearing it again immediately made you feel warm. "Besides, your unique ability to blindly trust people is one of my favorite things about you."
You snorted and Luke fought a laugh before continuing. “Well, that and your snort.”
“If you’re gonna be mean to me, I’m going back up to my perch.” You jokingly turned towards the ladder but Luke was quick to grab your hand, turning your back around and pulling you closer to him.
You looked up at Luke as his fingers intertwined with yours. You had held hands with Luke countless times, and you hated the fact that it affected you as much as it always did. It was normally just a way of comforting each other. But after the way he acted during the gig, you couldn’t help but wonder if…
“Hey,” Luke said. “We’re gonna figure everything out.”
“How do you know?”
Luke gave you a smile as he pulled you even closer and wrapped his arms around you. “When have I ever been wrong?”
You laughed and Luke squeezed your hand playfully in response. Your head was still spinning with everything that happened tonight, but the guilt had lessened a little as you tucked your head into his shoulder.
You don't know how long you stayed like that. It felt like hours and seconds all at the same time, but when you finally did pull away, you found yourself frozen in place. Your arms still locked each other, your face now just inches away from his.
“(Y/n), I…” Luke started, his voice uncertain as his eyes drifted down to your lips.
Holy shit.
You blinked up at him, actively trying not to freak out while you waited for whatever his next move was going to be. Were you hallucinating or was Luke about to kiss you?
Just as he went to speak again, there was a bright flash and Alex poofed in just a few feet away. As soon as he saw your and Luke’s position, his jaw dropped and he mumbled nonsense for a few seconds before clearing his throat.
“Hey.” He said, sending you an apologetic look as you and Luke separated so fast that it made you dizzy. “(Y/n), can I talk to you for a second?”
You slowly nodded and smiled awkwardly at Luke before grabbing Alex’s arm and dragging both of you out of the studio. All your thoughts from earlier disappeared and were replaced with one simple question:
What the hell just happened?

Chapter one:
Heaven. It had changed since the last time Dean was here, it was almost… better. Not perfect, but better. Back before Jack had taken over heaven, before it was one size fits all, Dean had always imagined what his perfect heaven would be. Afterall, being a hunter and having a below average lifespan as they usually did, one had to plan for these things. And in his mind his heaven truly was perfect. It was him sat on the couch, holed up in the bunker with a cold beer in hand, Doctor Sexy reruns on the tv, Sam in the chair next to him and Cas… Cas settled against his side on the couch, watching Dean's favourite cheesy soap opera with a content smile on his lips, their hand clutched tightly between them.
The three of them finally together, happy, that was all he had ever wanted. But now that wasn't the case. He was still with the people he loved, all together in one big jumbo heaven. Bobby, Ash, Ellen, everyone they had ever lost was there, even his parents, and don't get him wrong he was happy for it but it was lacking. The two people who meant most to him in his life, the only two people who could ever make his heaven as perfect as he had always hoped it would be, weren't there.
All his life he had been told that heaven would be where everything was made better. No more pain, or suffering, or misery, but of course it would always be different for a Winchester. Despite being happy for Sam, watching him from above grow old and happy with a family of his own. Married with a kid, white picket fence and all. It was all he had ever wanted for Sam, and that filled him with joy. But his heart still ached for Cas, for words unsaid, regrets and missed opportunities. Not to mention the fact that since that horribly fated day, as far as he knew Cas was still in The Empty. Locked away for all of eternity, all to save his ass so he could die in a horrible rush of rage not two days later. And in the end, they never even got to be together, not even in Heaven. And it hurt him even more deeply to know that if Cas knew what he had done, he would be disappointed in Dean, disappointed that his sacrifice was all for nothing. He couldn't even do what Cas wanted, he couldn't bear to live without the angel even though it was Cas's last wish that he did.
He tried asking Jack for help. Once he had gotten his bearings and put his thoughts back together after dying, he had gone to Jack and asked if he could bring Cas back. Use his powers to get him out of The Empty and bring his angel back to him. But Jack had only returned to Dean in Heaven with a solemn look and a shake of his head. If Jack couldn't bring him back then what hope was there. And so, for the most part, Dean walked Heaven with a heavy heart.
Sure, Bobby tried to cheer him up, saying things like, “You're brother will be here soon enough, boy, don't you worry.”
And his mom was always there with a waiting hug, which helped for a little while. But no matter what, none of it would ever be able to take away not only the longing for something he didn't have and could never have, but the weighing guilt at the knowledge that the reason he didn't have it was all his fault. Because he couldn't say it out loud, couldn't bear to let out his true feelings after all these years, only to lose Cas seconds later. But that didn't make up for the years of waiting before all that. For nearly twelve years Dean could have had Cas in every way he wanted, but he was too cowardly to make the first move, and in the end he lost everything. So far Heaven wasn't turning out to be all it was cracked up to be.
~~~~~~~~~~~
Dean wandered the bustling streets of Heaven, walking the same route he walked most every day since he arrived there, and came to the large two story house in the center. Once inside he sauntered through the endless white halls, passing by happy couples and families reunited. Though he did feel happy for them, he couldn't help but feel a little jealous as he forced a smile as he passed them. It was for this reason that for the most part he walked the halls with his head down every time he came here. If he didn't look at them or make eye contact he didn't have to feel that constant, gnawing monster at the pit of his stomach. The always growing dread of knowing that no matter what, he could never have the one person he truly loved, the one person he so badly wanted to share this heaven with. It sat harder in his gut with every passing day he spent watching the happy couples pass him by. So he tried as best he could to stay invisible.
His steps picked up as he walked faster through the halls, and eventually came to large double doors at the end. Without even so much as a falter in his step, he pushed his way through the doors and walked in without even knocking. He closed the doors behind him and took a second to breath in deep before turning and walking into the room.
“The saviour of Earth shouldn’t have to walk the halls of Heaven so heavy, Dean.” Dean clenched his eyes shut and took yet another calming breath, then turned to face Jack, “You have sacrificed yourself over and over for the world below, and even some of the people here. You should be happy, Heaven is a place where you should be happy.”
“Yeah, well, the Winchesters have always been the exception, so why shouldn't I be miserable in Heaven? It would be weird if I wasn't.”
Jack sighed and watched as Dean slowly walked over to stand beside him, “I can get you anything you want, Dean, anything that would make you happy just say the word and I will give it to you.”
Without looking up at Jack he spoke, more like mumbled, “The one thing I want you already know you can't give me.” Jack just sighed again and looked away. They both knew that Sam would eventually join them in Heaven, that was only a matter of time, but Cas… he was gone. And even with Sam in Heaven when the time came, Dean wasn't sure he could ever be truly happy without Cas. But instead of lingering on the thought and feeding he hole in his chest even more, he stepped up to the large bowl of water Jack had sitting on his desk and leaned over it. “How’s Sam doing?”
Jack came to stand beside him, looking into the water and seeing both of their reflections staring back at them. He waved a hand once over the bowl and their reflections disappeared, replaced by a vision of Sam. He was a little older than he had been when Dean left him, he could see the slight greys working their way through his still overly long hair. Dean smiled as he watched his little brother, finally happy, playing catch in the front yard with his son. This was the life he had always wanted for Sammy.
“He is happy, Dean,” Jack said from his side as if reading his thoughts, “he misses you, but he knows you're safe and waiting for him.”
“And the kid?” He asked, not taking his eyes off the young boy.
“Starts school in the fall. Sam is nervous to be leaving him, but he’ll be fine.”
Dean smiled once more at the scene before him, then nodded and walked away. He stood in the center of the room, just taking a moment for himself until Jack's hand came to rest on his shoulder. "I wish there was some way I could help you, Dean, some way I could make you happy. And I wish I could bring Castiel back but The Empty… it's impenetrable even for me. I'll keep trying but I don't know if it will ever work. I'm sorry, Dean."
"It's not your fault, kid," he answered, finding his hand aimlessly running up his arm and finding that spot again. That spot on his shoulder that always burned, where Cas had grabbed him to pull him out of Hell all those years ago. "But you have enough to worry about, running Heaven and all, so don't you worry about me or my happiness. It's the last of your problems, kay, kid."
"I worry about you all the time, Dean, I worry about all those under my wings. So your happiness is always one of my top priorities."
"Kid," Dean squeezed the now invisible handprint on his shoulder before turning to be face to face with Jack, "it's sweet that you worry, but you'll never be able to change it no matter what you do. I just… I can't live without Cas. Since the day he pulled me out of Hell I've never been able to be without him. I'm sorry, Jack, but that fact’s not going to change."
"Dean, I-" Jack stopped dead as the entire room started to shake with a screech that had them both falling to their knees covering their ears. Dean turned to look at Jack beside him, shouting over the all too familiar deafening noise, "This you?!"
"No!"
"Then who-" The screeching got louder, the high pitched whine ringing violently in Dean's head, and after a blinding flash of light covering them both in a white glow, it stopped just as fast as it had started.
Dean took a second to gather himself, hoping that the ringing in his ears would go away already, but slowly he pushed himself to his feet to take in the room. It would be the understatement of the millennium to say that he was beyond pissed when he realized just what had happened.
"You!" He growled out.
"Hello, Dean."
"You're dead, you son of a bitch!" His whole body was shaking, fists clenched at his side's.
"Oh, Dean, you should know by now, after all this time, you can't kill God."
Dean felt the rage build up inside him, bubbling over, encompassing him. "You mean to tell me that you've been alive all this time, and when the world went to hell you just sat back and watched?!" Chuck just stood in place, smirking at Dean as he went on, "You're supposed to be our saviour. Almighty and merciful God, tucked tail and ran when things got a little too hard."
“That's enough, Dean. I didn't give the world free will just to stand over it and fix every little mistake that you make.”
“Little mistake?” He asked in disbelief, slowly inching forwards, “You call the Apocalypse a little mistake? Lucifer rising a little mistake? Leviathans? Abbadon? How are any of those things classified as a little mistake?! How could you just sit and watch as the world, your world, burned to the ground?!”
“Dean-” he warned, but was cut off.
“You're just another a-typical absent father. You threw your children to the world and when they needed you the most you gave them a real big screw you!”
“Enough!” Chuck raised a hand and suddenly Dean found himself frozen in place along with Jack. He couldn't move, arms tucked tightly at his side, feet planted. “I didn't come here to have you think you know better then me. I came here to talk and you are going to listen.”
Dean struggled against Chuck's hold on him, but didn't say anything more and waited for him to continue.
“I came here to tell you, both of you, that I'm done.” Dean turned his head to look over at Jack, both confused, then back to Chuck.
“You're what?”
“I'm done, Dean,” he repeated with a slight shrug of his shoulders. “You may not think it, but I've given more of myself to this world then you will ever know, and I don't wanna do it anymore. No more chasing after my children, no more fixing their mistakes, no more saving you or anyone else. And after everything I've done for you and your brother, you are going to help me.”
“I owe you nothing!”
“Actually,” he shrugged his bottom lip, “by my count you owe me at least a couple dozen lives.”
Dean snarled his lip and grunted, still trying to break those bonds.
“So here’s how it's going to happen, I’m going to kill myself.
“What?!” Both Dean and Jack looked to him with a mix of intense emotions, “You can't-”
“You may not be able to kill me, Dean, but I can. And that's exactly what I'm going to do,” he moved to be a little closer to Dean, “well, kind of. See, while you've been up here living this odd little somber Winchester fantasy, Amara and I have been contemplating our existence. Everything we've done over the millions of years we've been alive, and we've both decided it's time. So in a way we are both going to be ending our lives, but we've decided that we want to live one more lifetime before we go, as the very humans I created. One more lifetime together as brother and sister before we let it all go and retire upstairs. Jack’s doing fine running Heaven on his own, so it's time. But before I do all that, I need to restore reality which means you can't stay up here anymore. It's time for you to go back down to Earth where you belong, Dean.”
“Where I belong?! I'm dead, I died fighting those vamps.”
“Dean, Dean, Dean,” he chided as he stepped forwards again, “delved so deep into your love for your brother that you don't know what's actually going on here, do you? Think back, Dean, think back to that fight, to the vamps and what actually happened.”
Dean did, he thought back as hard as he could. To that night with Sam and the vamps. Fighting them, saving the kids… his anger, his rage, his loss. It was the only thing that took over his mind, the only thing besides dying that he could remember. So he looked back up at Chuck.
“Here, let me help you.” He took the final step towards Dean and placed two fingers on his forehead, sending his head lulling back as the memories of that fateful night came rushing back to him, and not the memories that he had thought were true all this time.
He saw the vamps, the nail on the wall, and Sam… shoved up against it slumped forwards, dead in his arms. He felt the rush of pain, a second shot of loss as he cradled Sam in his arms, and the gut punched feeling as he came back out of the memory and realized that it was all a lie. “All coming back to you now, Dean, turning any wheels?”
“Sam…”
“You see, Dean, it wasn't you who died, it was Sam.”
Dean's eyes finally focused back, staring Chuck down as he made his best attempt to lunge at him despite the spell, “You son of a bitch! What did you do to me?!”
“Think of it like a Djinn dream,” he smirked, “I only gave you what you wanted, what you asked for.”
“I never asked for this!”
“Actually, yes you did, that very night when Sam died.” Chuck scoffed, almost laughed at Dean's confusion. “When you saw Sam die that night, you prayed to ‘whatever being may still be out there’ to save your brother one last time. ‘Take me instead’, you said, and I figured I owed you one. So I did what you asked, I kept Sam alive and brought you here, to Heaven with Jack and all the people you've loved and lost in the past, but none of it's real Dean. Well, Heaven’s real, but Sam’s life on earth isn't, it's all in your head, Sam’s happiness is just a vision.”
“How is it not real?! I've seen Sam!” He screamed, his voice almost sounding distant. “He’s… he's married, has a kid, a son. He’s starting school in the fall, he's… he’s…”
“Not real, Dean,” he shook his head with a sympathetic smile, “I made all of it up, Sam's life, his wife, his kid. You've only been seeing what I wanted you to see, what I thought you wanted to see, what I thought would make you happy. I really tried my best, put everything I had behind this one, but I've come to realize over the years that no matter what I do or how hard I try, I will never be able to make a Winchester truly happy.”
“If… if this is all fake, then where's Sam?”
“He's still in the same place he was when you last saw him.” Dean's eyes went wide and Chuck lifted his hands. “Not as you think, I didn't leave him to rot down there. I froze all time on Earth.”
“You stopped time?!”
Chuck nodded, “For the last four years time has stood still. No one’s moved or aged or even breathed since the night you prayed for Sam to be saved. And I used that time to reevaluate my life, both Amara and I actually have. And I think time’s stood still long enough. It's time for me to stop thinking about the happiness of the entirety of my creation and start thinking about my own happiness."
"Your happiness?! What about Sam's happiness?!" He nearly screamed, "After everything he's done for you, you're just going to let him die?!"
"Do you really think this would be Sam's perfect vision of happiness? Do you honestly think Sam would be happy without you?!" He laughed, "That's why I always thought this little wish of yours was the equivalent of a teenage fanfiction, rainbows, puppies and kittens, you know. So very not Dean and Sam Winchester at all."
Dean just glared at him as he continued, "Of course Sam wouldn't ever be happy down there without his big brother right by his side. He wouldn't stop hunting, or trying to find a way to bring you back. You two are way too attached to ever be able to live any sort of life without each other, it's a joke really to think otherwise. I believe Zachariah once described it as "erotically codependent"."
"You dumb son of a bitch! Let me go and leave Sam out of this!"
"I'm sorry, Dean, but I have to send you back." Though Dean was certain he wasn’t even the least bit sorry, for any of it, "I need to restore reality, put you on Earth where you're supposed to be, and bring Sam up here where he’s supposed to be. Restore natural order. It's the only way that Amara and I can live our one last life as humans. And you, Dean, you will help us do that. After all I've done for you over the many years, it’s time you owed me. Time to go back to reality now, Dean.”
“No,” he pulled back from Chuck's outstretched hand again as much as he could, “no, you selfish son of a bitch, I don't wanna go back! I want to stay here so Sam can be happy and alive down there. Switch us!”
“I can't do that, Dean, order has to be restored, and that means you down there and Sam up here,” he slowly inched even closer, “Sam will be fine, I promise.”
“No, don't send me back! Don't send me back! No!”
Chuck's fingers finally touched Dean's forehead, the room was filled in a blast of bright white light, and that was the last thing he saw before everything went dark.
~~~~~~~~~~~
When the white finally faded and he was able to open his eyes again, Dean found himself back in that barn. He sat up and slowly looked around. The bodies of several vamps scattered at his feet, and to his left…
He pushed himself over to his knees and scurried over to where Sam was laying on the ground. "Sam!" He lifted him up, shaking him, but the slick slide of the blood covering his back had Sam falling out of his grasp and back to the ground.
He lifted his red stained hand and stared at it in horror, this couldn't be happening! This couldn't be real. But the cold touch of Sam's skin on his other hand as he searched for a pulse he couldn't find, told him otherwise. This was it, this was reality, real. It was all real. Sam was dead, Chuck had fabricated everything he had thought was real for the last four years, and he was sobbing as he pulled Sam's limp body against his.
"Sam, don't… don't leave me, don't go," he choked, "I've lost Cas, I can't lose you too. Sammy, please-"
But of course Sam didn't answer, didn't move, then Dean had a thought. "Jack! Jack, I need your help! Please!"
The whoosh of wings hit Dean's ears and suddenly Jack was standing in front of him, looking at the scene before him with just as much horror as Dean.
"Can you fix it?!" He practically begged, desperate.
Jack walked over and knelt down, touching Sam's forehead. His hand glowed where it was rested on Sam's skin and Dean waited, holding his breath, but nothing happened. Sam remained lifeless, limp in his arms, cold.
"Nothing happened," he searched Jack's face for an answer, some kind of explanation as to why Sam was still dead, but Jack just shook his head, at as much of a loss as Dean was.
"I'm sorry, Dean, it… I can't do anything. It won't work."
"What do you mean it won't work?! You're God now, fix this! Fix him!"
"I can't," he whispered, "I'm sorry."
Before Dean could say anything more, Jack started to fade before him, almost glitch. "What are you doing?"
"It's not me," he shook his head looking at his hands, "I'm being forced back. Dean I-"
And he was gone. Dean was alone again, Sam was still dead, he didn't know what to do, he felt like he could barely breathe let alone come up with his next step.
Then the sound of crying caught his attention and pulled him out of the dark hole in his mind, and had him instantly on guard. Still clutching tightly to Sam he turned to look behind him. No one was there, the barn was empty, but then it happened again. The crying, and then… he looked down towards the ground.
He gently laid Sam down and slowly pulled himself towards the two small objects now a few feet away from him. He lifted the covers and in the two small car seats in front of him he found exactly what he was afraid he would find. Two babies, two new born babies, a little boy and a little girl both staring back at him. And inside the baby boy’s carseat there was a brown envelope with the words 'Attention Dean Winchester' on the front. He took the envelope and reached a hesitant hand inside to pull out the documents. And after he slowly and carefully read the first paper all he could do was just stare at these two little babies in front of him, Sam behind him, and try not to throw up as the hole in his stomach got infinitely bigger with every second. What was he supposed to do now?

Sugar with a Side of Coffee- Ch. 13: Purple Hyacinths and White Orchids
Chapter 13: Purple Hyacinths and White Orchids A/N: I’m sorry in advance Masterlist
Cate awoke the next day with a headache from drinking so much wine. Her alarm was chiming through her phone and it felt like the sound bounced between her ears. Pressing her palm into her forehead to create a pressure that wasn’t her headache, she let out a large sigh as she sat up in bed. It was her mistake to keep drinking with Spencer’s friends when she knew she had to work the next day. Even though she was paying for it today, she had a really fun night at Rossi’s.
Spencer had driven Cate back to her house last night. Instead of the usual comfortable silence, Cate was blabbering the whole ride in Spencer’s car. Not only was she the chattiest Spencer had ever seen, she was also the touchiest. Not always touching him, but fiddling with the radio, opening all the compartments to see what was inside. A wine-drunk Cate was brazen and not nearly as quiet as she normally was.
“Want to know my favorite flower?” Cate said out loud to Spencer, while rummaging through the pockets of his suit jacket that she was still wearing. Spencer glanced over to her.
“Of course.” He smiled at her. Every few seconds, a street light would shine an orange glow in the car, and Spencer swore this was the most beautiful he had ever seen her.
“It’s Asters. I like all colors but pink would be my favorite I think.” Cate started to take off her shoes in his car. She was struggling with the small buckle on the heel. “Now it’s my turn to ask you a question.” She sat back up, defeated by the small metal buckle. There was a silence as she thought of what to ask him. “What’s your middle name?” She decided. He had just pulled into her parking lot.
“Walter.” He quickly said, before getting out and walking around to open her door.
“Spencer Walter Reid.” Cate tried his full name out. She took Spencer’s outstretched hand and stepped out of his vehicle. She eyed him up, repeating his full name again. “Yeah, that seems about right.” She interlaced their fingers.
Spencer thought that the elevator would be their best option to get Cate safely to her floor. She dug in her clutch for her keys and passed them to Spencer to put into the lock. The two walked into Cate’s apartment just as Shrimp was walking past the hallway with one of the little toys Spencer had gotten him. Cate sat on the bench in her foyer and extended a leg to Spencer.
“Please help.” Cate stuck her bottom lip out. Spencer grabbed her ankle and his nimble fingers just barely struggled with the buckle. He laughed and motioned for her other foot so he could take the other heel off. When Cate stood up, Spencer admired the height difference between them. He could tell Cate was getting tired by the way her bubbling conversation faded. She slid his jacket off, holding it out to him. In the soft light of the hallway, Spencer could see her freckles that peppered the top of her shoulders.
That night was the first time that Spencer had seen her room. It suited her. He pulled back her black and white comforter. Cate laid down, still in her dress, getting settled in. Spencer kissed her forehead and gently took the bobby pins from her hair. He rested another yellow throw blanket over her body. On his way out, he gave Shrimp a scritch and quietly shut the door behind him.
“I feel like we haven’t worked together in forever!” Marta said loudly. Cate walked into The Empty Mug with her sunglasses on. She scrunched her face.
“Why must you be so loud?” Cate closed her eyes, pausing in her step. Marta chuckled.
“Hungover on a weekday? You’re becoming quite the rebel, Catherine.” Marta was putting the last of the chairs down. “It’s getting colder, my parents were thinking of retiring the cart for the season.” Marta informed Cate.
“Aw, I’m gonna miss my cart!” Cate was walking to the back room to put away her things and put on her apron. Like clockwork, soon after Marta flipped the sign on the door from closed to open, Spencer walked in.
“Hey, Sweater Vest, when are we gonna get a visit from Morgan for a change?” Marta joked with him, starting a pot of coffee. Cate came out of the back, her face lighting up when she saw Spencer.
“How are you feeling?” Spencer laughed. He had moved so he was standing in front of her. Cate brought a hand to her temple.
“Oh, you know, dealing with the aftermath of your friends. Remind me not to try and keep up with them again.” Cate laughed. Spencer shifted his weight from heel to toe.
“Would you like to go to the new Italian restaurant on Jefferson street later tonight? Like a proper date?” Spencer looked hopeful. Cate’s smile grew.
“I’d love to.” Cate nodded. She was mentally picking out an outfit already. The end of her shift could not come fast enough. As soon as Spencer mentioned Italian, Cate was thinking of an alfredo dish with bread sticks. Cate felt like she was back in high school, giddy like a schoolgirl for the first real date she’s had in awhile. She supposed she could count the museum date as a date, but she categorized it as friends, since that was all they were at the time. This time, though, their feelings were aired out and on the table and they were exclusive. That’s what made it a real date.
Cate just about ran home, her scarf blowing behind her as she rushed to her apartment. She showered and washed her hair to fix her hat hair. She shaved her legs, even though she planned on wearing tights. After her shower, she walked to her room in a towel, laying out her outfit she had curated all day. A dark green sparkly dress that had long sleeves. It fell above her knee, so she had black tights to cover legs and a black pair of ankle boots with a small heel. She curled her hair for the first time, managing to only burn her fingers twice. She facetimed Marta to show her the outfit and swoon over this date. Seeing the time, she wondered why Spencer hadn’t been to pick her up yet.
She remembered that they hadn’t decided on how they were meeting. Cate figured she’d shoot him a text and let him know she would meet him at the restaurant. Cate’s nose was red and a bit runny from the walk to the restaurant. The restaurant was all lit up with soft yellow lights and it was everything Cate imagined a real date would be.
Cate gave the hostess both her and Spencer’s names. He had made a reservation under his name in advance, despite the full house and the hostess informed Cate she was the first of their party of two to show up. The hostess led the way to a table for two, in a more secluded part of the restaurant that was more dimly lit and the tables in this area all had candles on their white table cloths.
It had been about fifteen minutes before Cate let some negative thoughts cross her mind. She tried calling Spencer, but his phone went straight to voicemail. Cate was on the second basket of breadsticks, pleading with the waiter for a few more minutes. After ten more minutes, Cate had decided to order her meal, not wanting the reservation to go to waste.
She could barely eat. Half of it was boxed up for Cate to eat for lunch the next day. The waiter had come back, telling her there was already a card on file to pay for the meal. Out of pure pettiness, Cate did something she never usually did. She ordered dessert for herself. A chocolate lava cake was brought to the table. The servers were now sneaking peeks at Cate sitting by herself. She pretended not to notice and picked at her chocolate cake that only tasted like spite. Cate finally gave them her own card to pay and left the restaurant with her leftover box.
She hauled a cab to go home, since it was now dark and freezing out. While she was in the backseat, her phone rang. Spencer’s name flashed on the screen. She wanted to answer and give him hell, but she left it for voicemail. She chuckled bitterly to herself thinking of Derek already chewing him out- wherever they were. It’s not like he would tell her what state they were in or where they were headed. Her phone finally stopped ringing, and a new voice message notification showed.
“I am so sorry. I know I promised you a date tonight. What I did was inexcusable. I’m on the jet and I’m an hour and a half out. Can we talk?” Spencer’s voice was rushed with embarrassment. Or was it guilt? After she texted Spencer to meet her at her place the taxi pulled up to her building’s entrance. Cate paid and got out of the car.
She left her box on the counter. She wanted to stay in her outfit so Spencer could see what he missed, but she didn’t want to be too mean. A part of her felt bad for being mean. She knew he had a demanding job and she was lucky to have spent so much of Spencer’s free time with him so far. She knew he was out there, getting the bad guys and making the world a safer place. With a sigh, she changed into sweats and a t-shirt and plopped on the couch with some reality show to fill the silence.
A knock on her door made Cate jump from a sleep. She hadn’t even realized she had closed her eyes. She could hear Spencer frantically knock again. His voice coming from the other side of the door.
“Cate? If you can hear me, please let me in.” Cate looked through the peephole. He was still in his FBI windbreaker. Still feeling mad at him, she opened the door just enough so he could see one eye. “Oh, thank god. I really am an asshole. I’m so sorry.” He started to say.
“Just tell me you got the guy.” Cate’s face was still hard with anger. She sighed. “Tell me you solved the case and it was good for you guys.” Cate blinked.
“Yeah. Yeah we did. It was tough, but we did it. That’s why I was late.” Spencer’s shoulders slugged.
“You weren’t late. Late implies that you would’ve showed up at all. You didn’t. I sat there by myself for an hour.” Cate spat. She took a deep breath in, fingers tapping the door while she made a decision. Opening the door wider, she let Spencer in. He followed her to her kitchen, where she took out a plate to reheat the leftover meal she had. “You must be hungry.” Cate said. Knowing that there was one less killer loose made Cate feel less angry at Spencer. She took out two forks and the two picked at the alfredo pasta together in silence. As they ate, Cate moved closer to Spencer, slowly pressing into his side. She was glad he was safe and home.
Spencer stayed the night, the two snuggled up in Cate’s bed. Cate’s head rested on Spencer’s chest, his arms wrapped around her. In the morning, he had to get up before her and he gave her a quick kiss before leaving to go back to the bureau for another day.
On another occasion a few weeks later, Spencer had promised Cate to another date at a different restaurant. Like before, Cate had gotten dressed and ready- waiting for Spencer to pick her up as promised. She facetimed Marta as she waited for Spencer to arrive. They discussed some new baked goods to try at the shop for the winter. She hung up the call when her doorbell rang.
She excitedly opened it, but it wasn’t Spencer on the other side. It was Penelope. She looked guilty, and when she saw Cate, she looked at her with pity.
“I am so sorry to be the bearer of bad news.” Penelope said. In her hands, were a bouquet of Cate’s favorite flowers: pink Asters. Cate sighed. “I can’t stay for long, I have to get back to my batcave, but I also brought you this.” Penelope handed a pint of chocolate ice cream to Cate. Cate smiled sadly at Penelope and thanked her for stopping by.
Spencer’s poor attempt at trying to mend his mistakes was to invite Cate over for more sleepovers and movie nights. He had even given Cate a key to his place. In the cases where he knew he was staying overnight, Cate would let herself in and water his plants for him. Sometimes she would wrap herself in his housecoat. She loved Spending time with Spencer and she was grateful to have met a wonderful male specimen, but she was growing tired of the kisses in passing and waking up alone in a bed where they had slept together. Cate bitterly thought of how she used to be happily single and how she became a wreck of a woman in love.
It happened one day when she came home from The Empty Mug. Spencer had beaten her to her apartment door. She smiled, excited to see him at a reasonable hour for the first time in a while. In his hands, he held a bouquet made of purple and white flowers.
“What’s the occasion?” Cate questioned with a small laugh. “Not that I’m not happy to see you.” She smiled at him, opening the door for the two of them. Spencer brought the flowers to the island. Cate could tell he was nervous. “What’s up?” now she was growing anxious.
“I know these aren’t your favorite flowers. They’re purple hyacinths and white orchids. They both mean sorry. Well, the orchids mean I’m sorry and the hyacinths are more of a please forgive me.” Spencer spoke with his hands, playing with his fingers.
“Forgive you for what, Spencer?” Cate placed her hands on the countertop of the island. “What are you talking about?” Cate shook her head.
“You deserve more than this. I feel awful when I have to leave for a case. You don’t deserve being stood up or waking up alone. And as bad as I want to be what you deserve and what you need, I can’t quit doing what I love. I wish I could but I can’t.” He stammered out. Cate grew angry at him, the floodgates had opened and everything she felt was coming out.
“You don’t get to tell me what I need! You don’t get to decide how I feel!” Cate started. She had come to terms with how their relationship was and how important Spencer’s job was. He was keeping people safe and Cate knew what she signed up for.
“Stop being so understanding, you’re making this harder than it has to be.” Spencer closed his eyes, pressing his thumb and index finger into them.
“Fine. I won’t say that it kills me not knowing where you go. Or if you're safe. I won’t say that it’s been easy, but I've been here, spencer. and I was planning on being here!” Cate yelled. Her throat burned. She didn’t want it to end like this. Tears stung her eyes. She couldn’t figure out why Spencer wanted to end this so bad.
After a silent standoff between Cate and Spencer, he curtly nodded and turned out the door. Cate let herself sit on her kitchen floor and Shrimp finally came out now that the screaming match had subsided.
Spencer was off his game at work. The team had spoken amongst each other and had come to the conclusion that Spencer and Cate were no more. That was a lie, Derek had visited the shop to get the details from Marta. Even though things were tense between Spencer and Cate, Derek wasn’t the only one visiting the shop.
“How long are you gonna let him just sit out there?” Marta asked, peering out the window to Spencer, sitting on the bench across the street from the coffee shop. He had been spending all his free time on this bench that faced the coffee shop. He hated how cold he got on the bench. Winter was in full swing now. He hated even more how things ended between himself and Cate. He tried reaching out to her, but Cate wouldn’t answer her phone or her door when he knocked. He knew he royally messed up.
“Until he freezes” Cate replied, not looking up from prepping a coffee order. She tried her best to ignore him. Talking to him or even seeing him would break her. She knew she would let him back in and she would just suffer again.
“Just because it’s cold outside doesn’t mean you have to be cold hearted” Marta told Cate. Marta felt bad for the two of them. And not just because all the scheming her and Derek had gone through to get them together had failed, but because they were good for each other. Marta made Spencer his usual coffee order and walked across the street to the bench.
“She hates me doesn’t she?” Spencer asks. Marta sighed.
“I mean, I wouldn’t say hate but maybe strongly dislike” Marta said, trying to lighten the mood.

Flying Solo
Reggie can dance ballet, he learned from his mother and does it whenever he’s feeling low. The band catches him and it turns into a bonding moment.
On AO3.
Ships: none
Warnings: Reggies home life from before they died is mentioned briefly. Tell me if I missed anything or if you want me to tag something!
~~~~~~~~~~
Alex and Luke had been friends since they were very little and had befriended Bobby in Middle School, only meeting Reggie in High School after he had moved to LA from NYC. He had easily fit in to their little group, but they did not know Reggie as well as each other.
Not that Reggie minded, he was a pretty private person. He didn’t like sharing things about himself and had become a pro in talking without ever saying something.
He did not like talking about his home and his parents, so he avoided those topics and made sure to always have an excuse ready about why they couldn't go to his home and he put on an act (partly) of being a dumbass to discourage deeper conversations.
It had even taken the other three a while before they figured out where he was from, only finding out when he had rolled his eyes at the depiction of the Big Apple in a movie.
Reggie liked his new friends though. They let him stay on their couches when the fighting got bad and never pitied him for the bruises.
They were his family.
However, he did not share everything with them, even after they’d gotten close enough to be brothers. Like the fact that his mother had been a professional ballerina, who was still angry she had to give up her studio for his fathers job, nor the fact that he had spend most of his youth there as well and knew how to dance ballet.
He knew they wouldn't judge him for it or think he was girly or weird, he had seen that with Alex. But still, it was his little thing.
The thing he did when he was down, his small comfort that reminded him of better times when glasses remained whole and his mother still smiled.
Ballet was how he had gotten into music, first learning to play pieces on the piano, later violin, then banjo and guitar, which lead to the true love that was his bass. His mother had always been a music person, his dad too. That used to connect them.
So he kept it to himself, only doing small pirouettes and some stretching in his room or old routines on the beach late at night under the stars to the beat of the fighting floating from the house.
But then they died and nothing was the same anymore. His home was a bike shack, his parents were gone and he was a ghost that could only be seen when they sung with a specific girl. The only good thing was that he would keep his flexibility for all of eternity.
Well, that might be a bit dramatic. Julie was super nice, he still had his friend and their music, and Ray was everything he had ever wanted in a dad, even if the man couldn't see him.
It was just that it hurt sometimes.
It hurt that he would never be able to socialize again, that they never had the breakthrough they had worked so hard for, that their music had been stolen by someone they trusted, that the only good father figure he’d ever known only tolerated him because he was invisible, that his friends were finding other people and he was being left behind.
Life, well, death, just fucking sucked and Reggie hated it. Not always, just some days when the loneliness crept up on him and he had no one to turn to.
So he returned to the thing that had kept him going for most of his life, before he had his band, his new family.
Ballet.
First he went to the beach, like he’d used to, but the bike shack was a bitter reminder of what he had lost and the entire area wasn’t the same anymore. So he returned to the Molina house, which used to be the Willson house.
Ray sometimes listened to classical music while he worked and, since he couldn't see Reggie, it was the perfect time.
He started doing his stretches, before he moved on to the basic positions and some other steps. It was nothing fancy, nothing like he’d used to do, but it was calming. Just flying through the space with his eyes closed while memories played on his eyelids.
His mother beckoning him closer with a smile, the older girls at the studio who had adored him when he was younger, his dad at the piano in the living room, while he either sat next to him or twirled with his mother.
The good times.
Soon it became routine to do old ballet routines in the living room while Ray was working and he was sure none of the others would be home or just whenever there was no one at all.
It was pretty handy that he could phase through objects now and didn’t have to deal with pushing everything to the side, although clothes were still an issue. He had a pair of sweats and a tank-top though, but no shoes, so he had to manage on bare feet.
But it was nice, it was comforting, which meant it had to go to shit at some point.
Today had began not that great. Reggie had been awake, like every night, but this time it hadn’t been nice and quiet, just a reminder that he wasn’t alive anymore. He’d gone on a walk, but all the changes were also a reminder and the day had just been doomed from the start.
First he’d wanted to hang with the guys, but Alex had a date (totally not a date, shut up) with Willie and Luke had heard his parents talking about his cousins and aunt coming, so he was haunting them, leaving Reggie on his own.
He had searched for Ray, but the man was away on a shoot and Reggie was truly on his own in the house. Nothing that bad, he’d thought as he decided to dance for a bit.
Quickly poofing over to the garage, he changed into what he had dubbed his dancing clothes, before poofing back and starting up some Tsjaikovski while he did the warming up. He reasoned that if anyone came home, they’d think Ray had left his music on.
He had started with something easy, but he could do that from muscle memory alone, which wasn’t helping him with getting his mind of things. So the routines had gotten increasingly more difficult throughout the day as he forgot completely about the time.
Because he was so focused on jumping at the right beats and stepping in time with the music, he didn’t notice the door opening and the small gasp Julie let out as she watched him. Nor did he notice Luke and Alex poofing back into the room next to Julie.
They had returned to find an empty garage, so they had assumed Reggie would be hanging with Ray, instead they had found Julie staring at something while standing in the doorway.
With their curiosity piqued they had poofed there and looked to find the usually clumsy bassist flying gracefully through the room.
After a fast set of pirouettes Reggie stopped, the dance was over. He stood still for a few seconds with his eyes closed as he caught his breath only to get snapped out of it by the sound of applause coming from in front of him.
He snapped his eyes open and quickly jumped out of the end position as he squeaked: “How long have you been there?”
“A few minutes.” Julie answered, “But Reggie that was amazing! I didn’t know you could dance like that.”
“Yeah, me neither, that’s sick, dude!” Luke also had processed what he had just seen.
“Why didn’t you ever say?” Alex asked.
“Uh…” Reggie gestured to the air helplessly, before he tried: “Never came up?”
Lukes eyes narrowed as he spotted Reggie lying, which Julie caught onto as she said: “Sorry, was I not supposed to see that?”
Reggie rubbed the back of his head as his cheeks started to flush. He said: “I must have forgotten the time, I’m usually gone before anyone sees. Unless you want to count Ray, but he can’t really see me. It’s my own fault.”
“Why didn’t you tell us?” Luke pouted, “Don’t you trust us?”
“It’s just something personal. My mother used to have a studio back in New York, we danced together when I was little while my dad played the piano, you know, before they started fighting.” Reggie explained, unable to deny Luke anything when he pouted.
“Oh.” Luke looked sheepish, “Sorry for pushing, but that was insane, bro.”
“Thank you!” Reggie grinned.
“Wait, New York?” Julie asked.
“We met Reggie in High School, he used to live in New York before they had to move for his dads job.” Alex explained.
In the background Luke pulled Reggie into a side hug, as he asked: “How can you be so graceful and trip over your own feet while walking, dude?”
“I do not.” Reggie exclaimed.
“You once tripped over air, Reginald.” Alex told him with an eyebrow raise.
Julie now finally closed the door behind her and excitedly asked: “Don’t care how clumsy he usually is, can you show me how you did that?”
“Did what?”
“The dancing? Please, I’ve always wanted to try, but by the time I had outgrown my ‘I’m-not-like-the-other-girls’ phase I was too old to get good and get lessons.” Julie said, “Can you teach me the basics?”
“I mean I could, but I you have to warm up first and I don’t know how flexible you are.” Reggie replied tentatively. Julie cheered, before she raced up the stairs to get changed into better clothes for this, leaving the three boys behind.
“I’m sorry if I pushed you to share.” Luke said after a few seconds, “I didn’t want to force you to tell us that.”
“It’s alright, man.” Reggie said, “I mostly have good memories connected with dancing, it’s something I do when I feel lonely.”
“Do you- do you feel lonely often?” Luke asked with sad eyes, making Reggie realize what he had just admitted.
Reggie didn’t want to lie to him again or make him feel like a bad friend after all he had done for him, so he just said: “It’s been hard turning into a ghost, you know I love to talk to people.”
That was not completely false, Reggie had always been the social butterfly of Sunset Curve and the life of the party. Usually talking to twenty people at the same time, none he had known three seconds ago and he did miss that it just wasn’t the whole story.
Luke saw through the words and felt guilty about leaving his friend alone when he clearly needed company. Alex seemingly had an answer, though. He carefully asked: “You wouldn't mind me joining either, would you?”
“No, of course not. You need better moves if you’re gonna keep joining Dirty Candy.” Reggie grinned.
At that point Julie came barreling down the stairs, catching the tail end of the conversation. She said: “Luke, you have to join now too. It’ll be band-bonding.”
The other two snorted at the idea of bouncy Luke trying to do strict ballet and Luke paled. It was too late for him, however, Julie was set on it. So a few minutes later they were all wearing dance clothes as they cleared the instruments to make space for Julie in the garage.
They had done jumping jacks to get the blood pumping and had struggled with touching their toes and keeping them pointed when Reggie moved to the splits.
“What the fuck, Reg.” Luke exclaimed, hissing in pain as he failed miserably in doing them himself.
“I’ve been doing this since before I can remember, Luke. Would be a bit strange, if I couldn't do them.” Reggie laughed, it was nice to make some more good memories connected to dancing, now with his new family.
From where she was struggling with the split herself, Julie huffed: “What else have you been hiding from us, Reggie? More surprises in there?”
“I mean, I don’t know if I ever mentioned I also play piano and violin?” Reggie replied.
“WHAT!”
