Homestuck: Beyond Canon Upd8 for 612 2024

This is long overdue, but it's been a bit of a rough week. Most of my activity on Tumblr this week has been from doctor's offices. Nothing really new or important to report there, just lots of doctor stuff.

While long overdue, I've mostly somehow been able to avoid spoilers. The only thing I've been spoiled on is what I kind of new was coming. Oh! And the plush! I know about the plush. Somehow in all the chaos though, my brain kinda didn't connect celebrating 612 with the idea there would be an upd8. Tells you how scatterbrained I've been.

So let's start with that news post.

Oh! James is going to be doing a stream? Cool! I hadn't heard of this. I wonder who with. I'll have to look that up next. James also goes into detail about revenue from the plush. From what I understand, this kind of deal is pretty common for when you supply a design/book/print but someone else does all the production work. Some never go beyond 10% unless you're doing a lot of business.

Looks like we've got apparel coming too! I bought a ton of shirts for 612 from one of the old retailers back in 2015. They are very beat up now. It would be nice to get some new ones.

It doesn't sound like the comic is self sustaining for this size team. I'm pretty sure James wouldn't carry through with his threat to actually put adds in Homestuck, but people deserve to be paid for the work they do.

Finally, this will be the first of two upd8s. Let's see what they have for us!

I think this is the first time we've seen the wings actually poof like that. Before, it was just outfit switches from God Robes to teen duds. We get a little reminder here of the increased age gap, as John has to stretch out the dad bod a bit.

Apparently, Immortals do still have to worry about aging and body degradation. Pretty lousy immortality . . .

Vriska ain't got time for that.

And I'm pretty sure Sollux doesn't have time for it either.

Things still a bit awkward between John and Roxy. Can't expect things to be stable there yet. They may have had their heart to heart, but the war isn't giving them any time to reconnect. John is also trying to bury what he's feeling by just involving himself in another adventure. Hopefully Roxy will keep him from just getting caught up too much in Vriska's orbit. But I'm pretty sure Vriska won't be satisfied until all of the Candy Timeline revolves around her.

Suitably awesome with a frame break and everything.

So there's no chance this doesn't cross some kind of Universal barrier. The question is, what? The hour glass shape has a lot of people speculating that it's a time machine of some kind. But anything that allows you to cross from one Universe to another would inherently have built in time travel, since from your frame of reference one point in time is much the same as any. The question is, can this escape Calliope's black hole? I can't help but feel like that looks like a singularity there too.

Let me try and compile what I know about this thing.

It's called The Plot Point. Since Homestuck has always been about narrative manipulation, a device that directly impacts the narrative isn't just possible but already has precedence. In a story a Plot Point is something that greatly impacts the narrative. In a normal three act structure, plot points can be used to start or end acts, or in the middle of acts to mix things up or increase tension. They can even be used to change how the intended audience sees the story and its characters. There's basically no limit to what this thing might be intended to do and possibly no limit to what it can do.

This is supposedly the reason why everything got so extreme in the Candy Timeline, the reason why John and Vriska both feel this version of the Universe is fake, why a near full cast has congregated here, why Jane went from being a typical rich neo liberal to being an outright fascist, why Dave ended up fully ascending under such hilariously crazy circumstances. Whatever this thing can do, it's supposedly already doing something just sitting there.

3. While obviously this isn't the same device, it shares some traits with the device from Hiveswap. But they're obviously not the same. The previous device looks a little more ramshackle, more steam punk, where as this one looks more streamlined. In Hiveswap's device, the colors on the serpents are clear references to Calliope and Caliborn, who have dominion over the four Universes in Homestuck.

The colors on these serpents are different. They don't even share a color between their spirals. What they remind me of more are God Robes. Specifically, Roxy and Jade's robes. I think these represent . . .

Oh hell! I think a fan theory might have just been proven right!

I think both of these serpent represent Calliope. The Black and White serpent represents Dead Tier Calliope. As Muse of Space, they have black and white for their God Robes. Additionally, they have been influencing the Meat Timeline through Jade's body. While Dirk may be trying to take full control of that narrative, it's technically Calliope's jurisdiction as now both Muse and Lord of the Alpha Timeline.

But why does the other serpent have Roxy's colors? Because our Calliope, our dear, sweet, fanfic writing Calliope, has been creating the stories of the Candy Timeline from Void. Somehow, through their deep connection with Roxy, Calliope has been manifesting their own narrative in the Candy Timeline. It may not even be this Calliope! It might actually be the Calliope in the Meat Timeline who stayed together with Roxy and grew closer to them. That Calliope is the one that was described as writing and drawing stories on their walls!

So what does this thing do? I think it can create any narrative Plot Point you want it to. I think it can steal the Void attribute of any idea, any character, any McGuffin you need it to! Need Gamzee back in the narrative? Bam! Gamzee's back! Want to bring Jane's dad back? Bam! Done! Need another life ring for dead trolls, or just a story that will eventually result in all the Homestuck trolls coming back to life in full? You got it! Want to write a peaceful resolution and dénouement to the war? Easy peasy!

Who the fuck's idea was it to put Vriska in the same room as that thing!

I totally understand, I’m in the middle of doing basically a complete overhaul. I’d say start with Banana Republic, Express, Abercrombie, Everlane, Reformation, Madewell, Ralph Lauren, Zara, J. Crew, Aritzia, Levi’s for jeans. Calvin Klein for underwear, t shirts. I lowkey love American Eagle & Aerie too even though it’s somewhat of a younger oriented brand. H&M gets a lot of heat for bad labor practices, low quality, etc. but I’ve had a few items from H&M that I still wear from years ago and it’s super cheap. White House Black Market has beautiful dresses. Also you can get a lot of this stuff at outlets or on sale or at places like Nordstrom Rack, TJMaxx, etc. I wish American Apparel was still more of a thing (rip) because their cotton basics were the best and I still wear a few neutral basics from them from literally early high school. I also like Pact for organic cotton basics.

For classy rich girl activewear I go for Lululemon, Alo Yoga, North Face, Patagonia, LL Bean, Eddie Bauer, Nike, Columbia. Loungewear/casual wear I love Aerie, Free People, and Anthropologie. Carhartt is kind of having a moment too and I have a few of their winter accessories like their beanies.

I know you said “don’t talk about thrifting” but thrifting is awesome. If you go to the rich neighborhoods in your area and go to the nearest thrift stores you can find gems. I’ve literally found authentic designer brands and cashmere sweaters at goodwill so if you’re down for the hunt it can be very rewarding.

What’s Sammy like in your AUs? (Personality, but appearance in particular,, had an idea floating in my brain about an animation meme)

I’ve had a rough idea for their design for a while so I’ll try to sum this up as best I can. Sammy in my AUs (and headcanons for in game) was originally an explorer with Nurm. The duo would go and chart new territories, with Sammy being oriented on studying the fauna/flora of biomes and Nurm mapping. Eventually, the two run into Jack and Vos while on a treasure hunt and decide to help out. One successful treasure hunt later and all four become a group, going on adventures and mapping and such. After a few years, Nurm decides to go off and map new locations while the trio go off adventuring.

Sea Temple time oh boy: The trio stumble upon a prismarine gauntlet while spelunking and accidentally open the original “heckmouth.” (The gauntlet doesn’t have the curse of binding, but the heckmouth does pose a great threat.) Eager to find answers on how to close the dangerous pit, they visit the closest village: Mushroom Archipelago. Sammy, used to conversing with Nurm, translates for the group and they deduce that their best bet lies in a Sea Temple nearby. (Not going into too much detail here because I’m saving it for my fic.) Unfortunately things go awry upon entering the guardian room of the temple when Sammy is killed by the guardians and Vos locked away in the room’s traps.

—Petra reminds Jack a LOT of Sammy which is why he is so quick to open up to her and offer to take her on adventures.

—The potion in Sammy’s inventory at the time of her death was given to her by Vos (something to help defeat the elder guardians with like strength or speed.)

Personality:

—very similar to Petra (laid back, group mediator, etc)

—experienced archer and biologist (cartographer too after joining Jack and Vos)

—always carried a journal in her bag filled with sketches of biomes, plants, mobs, etc

—would have loved lush caves if she found one

Design Notes: (may be changed in final reference)

—bandages around hands help with climbing trees (usually to get to a vantage point for shooting)

—cape is very short and is often worn around neck or waist (also her diamond is in the center)

—every bit of me is holding back adding more plants to her apparel

—colors may be changed in her final design, but you’re absolutely free to use them nonetheless

—Hehe also as a little easter egg, for those of y’all who pay close attention to my drawings of Vos, you’ll know he carries leaves in his bag. Yes, that has always been a nod to my Sammy design. I may be slightly in denial that he’s dead, but he always plants to remind himself of her.

Hot Topic has new Sally The Pumpkin Queen from Nightmare before Christmas themed merchandise. This is partly for the film's 30th anniversary and partly because they just published the novel "Long live the Pumpkin Queen" about Sally after she married Jack and became the Pumpkin Queen. I have mixed feelings about the novel. I love all things Nightmare before Christmas but in the story it's revealed that Sally isn't really of Halloweentown. The suggestion is she felt like an outsider because she was actually born in Dreamland. To me this undermines the idea of feeling like you don't belong in the very place you came from. And Disney has done that a lot lately like when they had it that Belle was originally from Paris in the Beauty and the Beast remake. In the novel Dr. Finklestein actually kidnapped Sally, erased her memories, and replaced her stuffing with autumn leaves. (...why?) I get that he wanted a servant but what was the point of replacing her stuffing? Sally learns the truth of her origin and realizes she is of both worlds. The main antagonist is an insomniatic Sandman No... Seriously. But not Neil Gaiman's version, who is also Morpheus of Greco-Roman mythology. The Sandman is the villain here. And it turns out all he really needed was a good long nap. It's written like an adult novel but it's a very child-like story. The idea that The Sandman just needed a nap is cute though. It reminded me of a very short Sandman story I read on Tumblr once that stuck with me. Someone wakes up from a sound sleep and sees a man crying on the side of their bed. And the man tearfully asks "What is it like to dream?" That's when it struck me, The Sandman (all versions) never sleeps or dreams because he IS Dreams incarnate. I know Dr. Finklestein isn't a nice guy but I think I prefer the idea that he created Sally instead of that he abducted her and messed with her memories and innards.

Its color never fades and always provides shiny, vibrant, and colorful crafts. I have done dozens of iron-on projects with my tiny Cricut Joy machine and infusible ink. The ink is so permanent that it won’t fade after washing. I am really excited to share my way of using infusible ink pens and creating lovely projects.

Before learning how to use infusible ink pens with Cricut, you should know how it works. Infusible ink works on the principle of sublimation. It sounds a bit complex, but it’s so simple. When you use the infusible ink or marker on a paper, it’s in a solid state, which is its original state.

But, the moment you apply heat to it, it gets transformed into gas. During this process, it infuses your material, and when you remove the heat, it cools down again. And then, after cooling, it will again become solid.

One thing to note here is that these products only work on specific materials, such as poly-based materials, polyester fabric, coasters, and mugs with a poly-coated ceramic coating.

Step 1: Tools and Supplies Required

Here are some of the essential materials and tools you will need for your project.

When you are done with all the materials, it’s time to start the project. So, let’s start the step-by-step guide and learn how to use infusible ink pens with Cricut.

Step 2: Create Your Design

In the first step, you need to put a sheet of laser copy on your cutting mat and then put it into the Cricut machine.

Now, move to your Design Space and choose the size of your design to fit onto your blank. After that, adjust your Linetype to draw and select a Cricut infusible pen or marker. Don’t forget to mirror the design before the cutting procedure.

Step 3: Load Infusible Ink Pens

Now, select your material. In the case of an older Cricut machine, set the Smart Set Dial to Custom. Once done, put your infusible Cricut pen or marker into Clamp A and then hit the Go button to load different colors.

Step 4: Unload the Cricut Cutting Mat

When your design is ready, you can unload your mat and then take out the design from the mat.

When your design is ready, you are ready to apply heat to your apparel using the Cricut EasyPress mat. To get started, first place the sheet of cardstock inside your apparel blank to keep it protected from wrinkles and damage.

Moreover, use a fresh and clean lint roller to remove the lint from the surface of your apparel blank. It will also remove the fiber particles to create a perfect apparel for heat transfer.

Step 5: Preheat Your T-shirt

Then, cover your apparel with the butcher paper. In the next step, you need to preheat your apparel to remove unwanted moisture from it. Also, you need to check the Cricut Heat Guide from time to time to follow the instructions correctly. Apply the heat with a light pressure.

After that, take off the butcher paper and let the apparel cool down. Now, put the design pieces on your apparel facing down. Then, apply the tape on each corner of your design with a Heat Resistant Tape, which will keep your design free from moving.

Step 6: Apply Heat to the Design 

Next, put the butcher paper on top of your design. Afterward, select the correct temperature and time settings for your project from the Cricut Heat Guide. Once set, apply heat with the optimum pressure, and when you hear a beep sound, lift away the press and slowly remove the butcher paper.

In the end, let your project cool completely and enjoy it. Finally, you learned how to use infusible ink pens with Cricut, and hopefully, you will try it on your own.
