October 5th 1785 saw the Pioneering Italian aeronaut Vincenzo Lunardi take his balloon from Heriot’s School, Edinburgh to Ceres in Fife.
If you remember my post about Scotland’s first balloon flight by James Tytler that happened in August 1784, we ll it must have attracted the attention of the worlds pioneering balloonists, Italian Vincenzo Lunardi.
And so it was at 3:45 p.m. on this very day, an 1785, the Italian, Vincenzo Lunardi lifted off in his “aerostatic machine” from the garden of George Heriot’s School for what would be the first of a series of historic balloon flights across Scotland.
Lunardi was invited to bring his balloon to Scotland in 1785, and it is from his account, printed a year later, that we get a real picture of Lunardi’s impression of Scots and the detail of his adventure. Lunardi arrived in September of 1785 and describes the people as “a hardy race…full of men of science and liberality” and the countryside along his journey as “almost alpine” and full of “enchanted regions of romance”.
It took this adventurous Italian the better part of a month to meet the right people to promote his balloon flights, but by the beginning of October the place and time had been set for Lunardi’s first daring flight: a 46-mile journey, over 36 miles of water, from Edinburgh to near Ceres in Fife, where a plaque now marks his landing. From a height of 1100 feet above ground, Lunardi recounts being able to see Glasgow and Paisley as well as the far shore of the Firth of Forth. Lunardi was amazed and distracted by the beauty of Scotland, so much so that he accidentally rose to almost 2000 feet and found himself out over the Forth before knowing it. His journey took him over Inchkeith, east towards North Berwick, then north above the shore of Fife at Lower Largo and finally touching down just outside of Ceres.
After his successful journey, Lunardi rested in Cupar where he was received by many dignitaries and clubs and then invited to St Andrews by the “Gentleman Golfers”. Upon arrival in St Andrews on the 15th of October, Lunardi was made a member of the golf club, was given freedom of the town and a ball was hosted on his behalf. The next day he visited the University, and his only comment about our institution is that it is “furnished with a good library, and some very valuable ancient manuscripts”!!
One of the many curious titles and awards that Lunardi received after this first flight was an invitation to join the “Knights Companions of the Beggar’s Benison,” a local club of the upper classes with rather questionable intentions! Lunardi would make four more flights in Scotland, all by the end of 1785, the last one ending in disaster as he was forced down to sea near the Isle of May. His passion and nature for ballooning inspired a nation to look to the skies.

As a witch of the Pacific Northwest, the beautiful realm of fog and rain, of humid summers and snowy winters, you’ll notice my gods have much to do with the home I’ve grown up in, and the way it’s grown inside of me, like moss in the crook of a Douglass fir… allow me to sing you a song, a love letter perhaps, to the most beautiful place on earth, and the deities who give it worth.
Poseidon
The Salish sea, it’s emerald green waters, breaching whales, and curling, reaching Madrones, beaches of sand and stone, littered with driftwood, beach roses, and colorful chips of beach glass… the waters are frigid, some of the harshest in the world, the “graveyard of the pacific” they call it. From the mouth of the carving Columbia, to the fjords and channels of the puget sound. These waters are full of a garden of life revealed when the moon is closest to the earth, purple stars, lemon slugs, and cherry red crabs scurry just beneath the veil of the salt water, an entire world within another.
Artemis
The enchanting coniferous forests, smelling of warm pine needles on a summers day, a shield from the gusts and drizzle on a rainy one, home to tantalizing tart huckleberries, stalks of thorned devils club, and mushrooms nestled amongst carpets of moss just begging for a gnome to set up a little home in a deadfall log just beggining to sprout a new baby fir. Perhaps a stream runs through, the aptly named salmonberries lining it a subtle hint to the fish that lay their eggs and embark on one final journey to create life anew once each year. These trees, towering and titanic, are ancient, but than, so am I.
Pan
The alpine, the mountains. The Heather, purple like a fire of floral majesty highlight the blinding light caps of snow of the cascades. Icy potholes filled with the clearest water you’ll ever see reflect the mountains like a mirror, like a portal to a realm not too far different from our own. Beautiful blueberries, succulent and sweet, bring a treat for the bears who roar in the spring, and in the winter, cover, for a vole who just barely squeaks. The crags are a mount for a brave mountain goat, and a perch for a view of a sunset to boast. The sounds of the meadows are soft as the snow, but still, Can’t you hear them? Can’t you hear the mountains sing?
So you see, my gods aren’t just me, they are the world I live in, and the air that I breathe. The world is as diverse as the cultures with which we fill it. How do your gods represent your home, how do they make the world you live in sing?

What’s a day in the life of Bucky like now
He wakes up, usually, some time after Steve’s left for his run. He showers, feeds the cat, puts the coffee on. (Or, in the case that he’s not up, Steve crawls into bed and cuddles up to his back to kiss him awake.)
He has plants to take care of. Yes, their building has a garden club— mostly for retired ladies. Yes, Bucky’s a part of it. Shaddup.
They invite him to breakfast, sometimes. He goes, sometimes. They don’t try to set him up with their granddaughters anymore—not since they’d noticed his ring. (Now, they ask about Steve.)
Therapy at noon. (With a therapist he actually feels comfortable with.) For a while there, it was 4 days a week. Now it’s down to 1.
Some days, he still comes home feeling weird; fuzzy around the edges. (Some days, he can’t take the train.) But he knows what to do in those situations. And Steve knows how to talk him down. It usually only lasts an hour or so.
Bucky writes. Sitting on the window seat, letting the sun warm his skin, he’s filled journals. Or he knits. Or refinishes the wood furniture. Anything to keep his hands busy. (To feel like he can create rather than destroy.)
They cook dinner together, usually. (Unless Steve’s off doing hero things, or if their friends are in town, or if one of them is having a particularly bad day.) Their kitchen is full of laughter, music—old records. Steve tries to get him to taste something 2 or 3 times to make sure there’s not too much salt. (There’s not. Steve’s a better cook than he’ll take credit for. Even if he almost burned chicken once because he insisted on a dance. “It’s Sinatra, babydoll. C’mon.”)
They’re working their way through a list of movies they want to see. Steve started the list, and Bucky’s been adding to it. Curled up under blankets in the couch, Alpine sits on Bucky’s lap.
Nights aren’t so bad anymore. If he distracts himself, sometimes he can sleep without nightmares. He’ll tire himself out at the gym. (Or in their bed.)
He’s happy.

Titles Game
Tonight I'm Going Back to My Old Ways - suggested by @steverogersnotebook
@somesortofitalianroast - Bucky didn’t usually go for straight guys. Not since Brock in college, anyway. But tonight, all he could see was the blond across the bar. He was laughing with his friends, and he was gorgeous. Muscles for days, a body Bucky wanted to climb like a tree, and a wonderful smile that was a combination of Hallmark wholesome and downright dirty that shouldn’t have worked, but did. The piercing blue eyes just sealed the deal: Bucky was going to get him in his bed. (there would definitely be a tag in there about how they need to communicate and how Steve's not straight)
@wolfnprey - Bucky had settled down after he started a family. Everything told him he didn't deserve happiness, but he was beyond listening. Until some old ghosts showed up. Literal ghosts, and they were hellbent on making sure Bucky's life was upended. He'd buried the necronamicon in the basement ten years ago, but now he was digging it up with the help of his old partner. If only Steve was forgiving.
@steverogersnotebook - (Early recovering Bucky) finds it hard to come to terms with the modern Brooklyn, seeks out night clubs and smokes like a chimney in an effort to feel the way he remembers feeling.
@ribbonsflyingoutthewindow - Their relationship had been strained in a way that Bucky was pretty sure couple's therapy couldn't fix. Not that he had tried. He wasn't about to unload all of his trauma concerning not being his old self anymore on some poor middle-aged Brooklynite mother of three even if she did have a degree that supposedly helped. There was no way she was prepared to help a brainwashed assassin with a fault list from Coney Island to hell and back again. So instead he'd unloaded all of that on Natasha. As a best friend, she was legally obligated to listen to him anyway. And besides, she was cheaper; she could be bought with a whine and a wine. However, talking to Natasha also meant he got the cold, hard truth that his relationship was suffering not because he'd forgotten who he was and became a brainwashed assassin for decades, but because he'd forgotten who Steve was and hadn't spent a lot of time figuring it out again. So per his therapist's (Natasha's, whatever) advice, Bucky's getting back to his roots and rebecoming the man who knew everything about Steve Rogers and hoping that maybe somewhere along the line, he can figure out what it was that made the two of them work so perfectly together.
More under the cut!
Down the rabbit hole - suggested by @liquidlightz
@phoenixgryphon - MCU Nat going down the rabbit hole that is pre Cap2 TWS information
@steverogersnotebook - An edgy Alice AU where bucky meets the OUAT version of the mad hatter.
@somesortofitalianroast - Bucky wasn’t sure how, but he was constantly seeing the same figure out of the corner of his eye. A tall, muscular blonde, who seemed as though he wasn’t quite there, which was why Bucky was sure he was imagining the man, or confusing multiple tall muscular blonds. They weren’t as uncommon as one would think, and Bucky was so tired, so he decided not to worry about the blond. Until the day he literally fell down a rabbit hole - in Brooklyn, of all places - and ended up in another version of New York.
@wolfnprey - Stripper AU. Nat drags Bucky to Down the Rabbit Hole for a particular stripper named Alice who is a beefy blond with bright blue eyes.
@bookdragon13 - Or alternatively: Steve goes to Storybrooke during his quest to find Bucky and meets Jefferson. Steve immediately goes “Bucky?” And Jefferson, in his sassy way, says “who the hell is Bucky?” But proceeds to use his hat to help Steve find his Bucky, if only to meet his lookalike Whether or not this becomes angsty, I’m not sure
@psychiccatpanda - Bucky In the 21st Century: After spending too much time on the internet trying to figure out what some of the things he’d been hearing about really were, Bucky wishes he’d trusted Tony when he said, “Snowflake, there’s whole swaths of the interwebs you don’t want to know. Trust me, please?” Now, six and a half hours later, he knew that there was Avengers fan fiction (and what that consisted of) and Avengers cosplay porn. He wasn’t sure what to do with this information. But maybe he just needed to do some more research. After a snack.
@liquidlightz - Alpine was very protective. Bucky loved gardening and he'd planted many different flowers, but there was a fat rabbit that kept popping by and eating all the best tulips, daylilies, you name it. Bucky was hesitant to harm the creature, but Alpine was having no more of it. She chased said rabbit down its hole and Bucky had to dig her back out.
@ribbonsflyingoutthewindow - Bucky’s family owned a farm so he'd had a plethora of pets his entire life, but when he'd moved to the big city, Bucky had stuffed Top Hat the white rabbit in her carrier and told her they were headed for the adventure of a lifetime, no looking back. And truth be told, sometimes New York was lonely. But the other truth was he didn't miss Indiana at all. He loved New York, but he'd never regretted his move more than the day he came home to discover Top Hat not in her enclosure. He had to go door to door on the entire floor and maybe the floor above and below his. Everyone had to help find his missing long-eared, fluffy-tailed best friend. Cue everyone in Bucky's apartment complex searching the entire building for one white rabbit trying to pull her own disappearing act. And cue Bucky searching for a rabbit, but finding maybe a little more along the way.
You pull hope from defeat in the night - suggested by @somesortofitalianroast
@steverogersnotebook - After a terrible loss on a mission, Bucky and [strained relationship/preferred pairing] are nearly wiped out themselves. One has to get out and get help for the other before it's too late for them too. In dragging the injured party to safety, promises made in supplication reignite hope for a resolution.
@somesortofitalianroast - (pre-serum!steve/Winter Soldier!Bucky) After exhausting missions, there’s nothing Steve likes better than hooking up with a guy at a bar, preferably one who would believe him when he said he wouldn’t break. Tonight, he chose the guy carefully, a big, beefy brunet with thighs for days and something about him that made him look gentle. One night turned into another. And another. And another…. Who said hookups couldn’t lead to love?
@bookdragon13 - Just when Bucky was feeling his lowest, walking around Brooklyn at night, he hears a faint meowing. Bucky finds the white kitten and takes it to the local vet. Afterwards, he couldn’t just leave the white fur ball behind, adopting her and giving her the name Alpine. With Alpine around, Bucky couldn’t help but start feeling like he could climb out of the hole he’d dug himself in. He can’t help but laugh at Alpine’s antics and when he’s having a bad day, she cuddles with Bucky as he rubs his fingers through her fur
@liquidlightz - Bucky had written off more cheques than his body could cash, yet again. Losing badly at poker and getting beaten down for failing to pay up. This night was turning out better than the last, as he found himself in the hands of a gorgeous Doctor with gentle hands who seemed to enjoy his attempts at flirting through bloodied teeth. Things might be looking up, he was going to go all in and take another chance tonight.
@wolfarrowepz - (Winterhawk, hockey AU)The Avengers were eliminated in the second round of the playoffs.... less than a third of the team had been with them when they won the championship 3 years ago. Now all Bucky wants to do is go home and sulk and ice his knee in peace. Clint has decided he needs to come to dinner with the team to show all the rookies and new guys to show them that losing isn't the end of the world. Fuck it all if Bucky will do whatever Clint asks. Bucky he liked him since they joined the team together as rookies. Clint is 100% oblivious to every move Bucky makes but if Clint asks him to do something he will. Clint on the other hand is convinced Bucky isn't into him. Cue pining and the inevitable "of course I Like you, you dope!" moment.
With Steel and Silver Burning Heart - suggested by @ibelieveinturtles
@steverogersnotebook - Dragon trainer AU, Steve goes to slay the dragon, Bucky's the dragon trainer. They meet, they clash, they enemies to friends to lovers.
@phoenixgryphon - big beefy bucky the blacksmith. who builds broadswords to bring in the bills
@somesortofitalianroast - (Regency!AU) James Barnes was well aware that he was the Marquis of Buchannan in name only. With no money left in the estates coiffers and three younger sisters - the oldest a mere year before her official debut - to support, he was desperate. Desperate enough to approach the new Duke of Brooklyn - a known rake with a history of getting in duels - with an offer: he supplies the cash for Rebecca’s debutante and in return, he gets James. But what happens when the purely financial relationship is no longer purely financial?
@liquidlightz - Bucky was not amused when the blade pierced his heart. Fuck, that hurt! "You asshole", he berated his not-looking-so-hot-now date on the other end of that dagger, "I thought we were having a good time." Bucky had to thank his lucky stars, and not his wits, that this hunter was a moron and that blade was cheap metal and not silver. He should, maybe, start being a little more discerning in his hookups.
@bookdragon13 - As a Knight of the Realm, Bucky was sworn to protect the royal family. He didn’t mean to fall in love with the Princess in the process. Neither did Bucky realize he was a jealous man, until he saw another knight, Brock, try to kiss the Princess, with her unwilling. Bucky immediately called Brock out, challenging him to a duel. When Brock was wounded, Bucky threatened that if Brock tried anything with Her Royal Highness again, he wouldn’t be so lenient.

Words for Bill
December 17, 2020
As I write these words down on this page, a flock of geese has gone over the house, voicing a baleful good-bye to autumn and a welcome to the dark winter months. For William Harvey Webb, W.H. Webb, Bill, the winter road was a significant metaphor. Through the years, if we stopped and looked at the details etched into those crisp winter tracks, we were to discover more than just snow; the light reflecting off of the raised edges and the shadows pouring into the deepest hollows of the tread marks, but also, we were to discover rich histories; family, friends, conversations, laughter and tears.
Welcome to those of you who have come to share in this tribute, today. Let us, in our imaginations, include and leave some space for so many others who want to be here with us. Bill was so well-loved and there are so many that he loved in return
You can’t see him, but standing by my side, is one of Bill’s closest friends, Richard Dawson and over there, seated near his friends, Brock and Elaine, is his wife, Shirley. Richard brings to this gathering a lifetime of shared narratives and so, at times and with his permission, he will nudge me, and I will share the odd one.
My name is Kathleen Moors. Bill called me Katie. Bill and I have shared a magical friendship and this is an honour to be with the people who meant so much to him.
Bill was no stranger to loss in his life. When son, Michael, died, Bill was devastated and felt helpless. Perhaps now he can offer comfort to the son he loved so much.
To Bill’s family; Amanda and Wade, Gaylene, Andrew and family of Northern Ireland; brother, Bob and wife, Shirley as well as his five beautiful grandchildren; we offer our sadness, our support, and our love.
I will NOT soon forget how animated Bill became at the mention of time spent with his grandchildren, particularly when they were able to share dates out to live theater or musical performances. Bill was a real gentleman and always dressed up for such occasions. He saw events as spectacles.
Bill was a romantic and a gentleman. He grew houseplants. He loved any animal that came his way. He adored Ginger and Blackie…and Teva…and they loved him. There was never a dinner prepared that did not involve a remarkable place setting and candles. I remember Bill leading me to the outskirts of Edmonton after the celebratory festivities following the Alberta Centennial exhibit hosted by the West End Galleries. He did this so that there would be no chance that I would lose my way
Bill did not own a computer. He was the most ‘unplugged’ person I know, relying on the library for the occasion of checking electronic mail. He didn’t access television or cable, but did watch movies, his good friend, Brock, often sending them from Moose Jaw. The sound of opera would often fill his nest with beautiful voices, something that he shared with good friend, John Oberg when John would slip over to Bill’s place or Bill would show up at John’s, the brushes cleaned up and put away for another night.
Bill was an educator.
Richard nudges… “when jobs were scarce in Oldham, England, Bill and his new family moved to Canada and a teaching job in Fort McMurray. Then it was on to Castor where he was principal, then principal in Grand Cache, Alberta. Next it was Superintendent of Schools in St. Paul and later Wainwright.”
While giving this all up, to Sheep Farm in Heath, Alberta, Bill never stopped being an educator. He taught Sunday School for several years, creating dioramas and long rolls fed through makeshift television sets…he was an amazing orator, as well, feeling very comfortable speaking in front of any group. He volunteered, teaching art at various grade levels and I’m certain that the children were, every time, excited to see him.
Bill was an amazing listener. He was not one to busy his hands when you spoke to him. He looked straight at you and gave you complete attention, asking the most interesting questions that, indeed, gave you every reason to believe that you mattered, you were his entire world at that very moment. In the busyness of food preparation, I sometimes looked over my shoulder and saw Bill listening to one of my children and I wondered, “If only I could do that!”
Bill loved reading, especially history and non-fiction, but if you suggested a book, he would inevitably pick it up at the library or purchase the title so that he could give a ‘book report’ as he called them or he might even write out his book reports and post them in the mail.
Bill loved to dance. I never got to dance with Bill. This was a moment, lost.
Bill loved connection. He was a part of the Film Society whose members included Rick and Lyn, Mary-Lou, Carol and Noreen Getzlaf, Linda Wheaton and a long list of others. Richard says that in the group, when the beverages came out, Richard was the only one not drinking….to this day, he ponders, now chuckles about whether they welcomed him to meetings for the rich variety of film OR because inevitably, he served as designated driver!
Bill spilled over with excitement about the Wine Club events, the garden parties and the brunches hosted at John Oberg’s. I wasn’t ever a member of the Snake Trail Alpine Club, but that, too, grew a culture and history all its own. I went on numerous walks and hikes, with Bill and you probably did, as well. Bill had a marvelous connection with the landscape and conversations were had where all we did was analyze the sky, the shadows they cast on the land…observations that might seem unremarkable to most.
Bill loved all things related to trains and had huge dreams about drawing travelers into Forestburg by creating something very special around art, trains and community. He loved talking about the process of constructing all of the unique bits that went into building the landscape elements. He was such a master at everything he took on!
Bill explained in his letters just how much he treasured it when someone was sitting back in his big comfy chair while he painted…I think we’ve all taken a place in that chair, but most treasured for their visits would be Rose and Virginia, I think. Oh my. The stories Bill would share over the telephone about the encouragement that was given.
Bill enjoyed the company of so many. The RB3 Richard Dawson, Bruce Beck, Brock Chrysler and Bill Webb! He enjoyed seeing the guys whenever possible, but also really treasured their telephone conversations over so many years.
Bill was a health-conscious person. He didn’t hesitate to share his journey as it related to the body or the emotions.
Richard Nudges…
Richard writes WW2 stories and he did an in-depth one on the Dam-Busters Raid, focusing on the 3 men from Moose Jaw and District who were on the Raid.
He completed it and the RCAF scheduled a little show and flag ceremony on the anniversary of the Western Development Museum. All systems were go.
Then Richard got a call from Bill. He was having knee replacement surgery and would Richard come to Forestburg and help out. So, Richard assigned his Dam-Buster Project to a most capable young man at the WDM and off he went.
Bill saw his recovery from the surgery as another competition and did all his exercise and activities. Before going to Forestburg Richard made clear that he would not be helping Bill with bathroom chores. If he needed to take a dump – he was on his own. (Don’t forget…these are Richard’s words! Lol I can just imagine these two guys laughing about this.)
He was an excellent patient. Richard cooked and they both put on a few pounds.
After five days he was able to get around just fine and Richard headed home to Moose Jaw.
On the second knee surgery he was able to stay with Amanda and Wade and they nursed him back to health.
Regarding his health, Bill consulted with the professionals with great enthusiasm and followed all directives when it came to achieving a healthy balance in his life. He filled countless journals and developed the habit as a way of working through difficult times. He was exceptional at keeping archives of events and didn’t miss a detail because…
Bill was a detail guy.
Bill’s approach to painting was incredible. He set up his studio so that it was very spare. He was not one for clutter or distraction when he needed to focus. He and I used to joke about blending our studios and agreed that it might never work because our spaces are so different from one another. He lovingly left voice messages, “This is Bill of the Northern Studio, checking in with Katie of the Southern Studio.
First steps to a painting involved airbrushing his sky. From there, he delved into the world of darkest values and from the very onset, Bill used miniscule brushes. He built incredible worlds as he came forward in space, with lighter and lighter values. He was technical and deliberate. His works are dreamscapes of places a lot of us know, but rarely analyze the way that Bill did. Whether it was a huge vista of the Livingston Range or those ruts on a country road in winter, he paid the subject the same attention and care. He was prolific, painting right up until the last weeks before he died. He felt responsible to his dealers and spoke often about his professional relationships with them. Over time, these people came to be very personal friends and extremely important to him.
Richard Nudges…
“One of Richard’s last official acts for Bill was attending the Memorial for William (Bill) Shurniak at the Shurniak Gallery in Assiniboia. Bill died August 8, 2020 and the memorial was open – at the Gallery and individual.
Bill and Richard visited the Shurniack Gallery many times and if Bill Shurniack was there, they visited him. He was still active on the Board of Husky Energy in Calgary and was still travelling regularly to Hong Kong.
As Richard sat in the Gallery, listening to the music, he could see a Group of Severn painting over his right shoulder. It is a painting of Cowley, Alberta, although, I think – called Pincher Creek Station.
When his meditation was complete, he signed the registry for himself and also signed Bill’s name. Richard called him from the car and he was very appreciative I had done that.”
Painting was such a great joy to Bill. He and I spoke to one another endlessly about our work, supporting one another and challenging one another. In his letters, he always began with what he was working on and ended with what he was going to go and work on next. I am so proud of W.H.Webb, the painter. He worked so hard. The art community is going to miss such a gentleman as Bill, such a magnificent artist, driven with a passion for capturing the spectacular views that so many of us love.
Bill’s vision.
This eulogy has not written itself easily. I was writing and writing and deleting and writing again, simply because I felt that if I stopped and the words wrapped up and came to an end, it would mean that my friend is truly gone. I realize through much losing these last years, that if we truly love our family and our friends, they will remain. I have to trust that this is the case here as well.
I wrote the final words on the page…Bill’s Vision.
What would Bill want you to know…or to realize…by his life and it being entwined with yours and I am left as I began, with the sound of the geese….and an image. Consider these a gift today, that you loved this absolutely precious and beautiful soul. And keep him with you.
Wild Geese by Mary Oliver
You do not have to be good.
You do not have to walk on your knees
for a hundred miles through the desert repenting.
You only have to let the soft animal of your body
love what it loves.
Tell me about despair, yours, and I will tell you mine.
Meanwhile the world goes on.
Meanwhile the sun and the clear pebbles of the rain
are moving across the landscapes,
over the prairies and the deep trees,
the mountains and the rivers.
Meanwhile the wild geese, high in the clean blue air,
are heading home again.
Whoever you are, no matter how lonely,
the world offers itself to your imagination,
calls to you like the wild geese, harsh and exciting -
over and over announcing your place
in the family of things.

I’m gonna be a little negative about the game here, so skip this post if you don’t want to read negativity!
I’m gonna be honest. I adore this game, it’s beautiful, the terraforming is great and the new furniture is lovely and the amount of design options you have is amazing.
But for some reason it still feels...less fleshed out than New Leaf. Like, a lot of features just seem to be..not there.
There’s no gyroids, no bushes, no art wing in the museum, and no sign of the roost. My villagers have said 2 things that aren’t related to bunny day in the last 10 days, and they still get annoyed super easily, so I actually avoid talking to them because I don’t like them getting passive aggressive about it. I avoid talking to villagers in an animal crossing game. Like. What. I just walk around hoping they’ll ping me to teach me a reaction while some villagers spend the entire day doing yoga. I miss when they used to come up to you and ask you to deliver something to another villager, or bury a time capsule, or just ask you something random. I’ve been playing for 3 weeks and I have only completed 5 requests for villagers. In 3 weeks.
There’s no sign of store upgrades beyond the first timmy & tommy upgrade. The bunny day event is terrible. I have seen a total of 2 items belonging to the actual sets we knew (like the exotic set or the alpine set) and the rest is crafted. I’ve been playing for a little over 3 weeks now, and almost daily Timmy & Tommy stock an item I’ve already seen in their shop.
Getting hybrids is a pain because there’s native flowers now for some reason, perfect fruits are gone (??? why), the camp site seems to stay empty unless you invite Amiibo villagers because it’s been 13 days since Leopold moved in and I haven’t had a camper since, so the campsite is now just empty space without anything there. I’m missing a ton of DIY recipes yet I get doubles 75% of the time from balloons or message bottles. Diving is gone.
In new leaf there was the garden store, nook upgrades, shampoodle, kicks, club LOL, katrina, etc. Here you get 2 shops and KK slider coming by every week.
I’m just..a little disappointed I guess :( I still love working on my town which I’m doing right now and taking pictures but I just miss being able to talk to my villagers and stuff.

Sensory Notes 1: Backpacking
Okay, I don’t quite have the full write-up of my big backpacking/hunting trip done yet. But! I do have another thing from the trip y’all might find interesting.
One of my biggest issues in writing is describing the world well (I usually get it in there by the third or fourth draft, but first draft? Nope.) So, to try and kickstart my brain into better description land I’ve started making sensory lists whenever I’m in a new place/doing a new thing. Been doing it for about a year and it is quite fun and very helpful. If anyone else finds these helpful I can post more!
Feel free to use these as prompts/details for your own writing if you like!
Setting: Colorado, Meeker Flattops Wilderness, Wilderness, Tundra-ish, Pine Forests, Extinct Volcano, Camping, Backpacking, Elevations between 9,000 and 11,500 feet, trail that less than 100 people hike every year because it is that hard and that far out.
Also, trigger warning for animal death mention in one of these bullet points. I put them as numbers so you can skip it if needed. It’s number 43.
Dirt caked in your palm lines, not just in your nails. Like the Earth is trying to make your future extra clear.
The blood rush/dizziness you get when you take off your heavy pack. You almost feel like you’re about to float away, and your first few steps are rather wobbly.
The sting of blisters forming as your sock rubs you the wrong way, but you can’t do anything about it because to fix it you’d have to stop and take off your pack and then your shoes and socks, maybe drag out a first aid kit, then get it all packed up and put back on. Better to just power through and deal with it at camp.
The smallness you feel staring at a 360degree view of canyons and valleys and mountains. There’s so much world out there, fading away in atmospheric mist in every direction.
The acknowledgement of a wildfire, but knowing it’s far enough off in the distance to never effect you.
The violently colored flowers in hues that almost seem unnatural. Like near ultra-violet daisies.
The sound of the wind racing around the mountains, even though it isn’t hitting your area, is a constant background noise.
The steady, building burn in your muscles. It hits your thighs and lungs going uphill, and your calves and thighs going down.
Your heart racing at speeds you didn’t know it could get to. That it probably SHOULDN’T get to.
Your chest demanding air but it never feels like it can expand enough.
The momentary blip of “well fuck” when your boot slips on some loose rock on a cliff trail.
The clean, empty taste of volcanic spring water. Makes you taste all the minerals and purifiers in tap water quite a bit more when you get back.
The strange sense of security you get being in your tent at night, even though it doesn’t offer much actual protection against large critters.
The annoyingly confined feeling of a mummy bag when normally you sprawl out all over the place when sleeping.
Having your limbs go numb from dehydration and over exertion. Shaking and tingling and your hands feel like clubs. Takes ages for you to fully come back together.
The indescribable feeling you get standing at the edge of a volcanic crater lake that no one has ever found the bottom of. Dipping your toes in feels like inviting something ancient into yourself.
The color of a volcanic crater lake isn’t like any other alpine lake. It’s a deep crystal blue with an undertone of green, especially around the edges.
Hearing a cracking in the forest at night when you’re about to go to the bathroom and deciding you don’t really need to shit THAT bad.
Waking up to the chattering of squirrels that are very annoyed about the placement of your tent.
Watching a little hummingbird mistaking all your brightly colored camping equipment for flowers. He’s so rarely seen people he doesn’t care about them and will land right on you.
Sweat running down your back like a garden hose on a hard hike.
Never quite knowing the right path when going off trail. Is this way going to have a log that’s too big to get over? Will it get too steep? Where can you safely put your feet?
Your lips slowly chapping and cracking as you dehydrate. You know you shouldn’t lick them but you can’t help it.
Breathing through your nose when going uphill is not an option. Not much of an option going downhill either.
The warmth of cooking a good freeze dried meal pack is almost better than the meal itself. Curling up around it as it cooks, soaking up the heat.
There is no way to get completely comfortable at night. You wake up and shuffle around constantly throughout the night.
The freedom of having a warm enough night that you can unzip your sleeping bag and use it like a regular blanket rather than being constricted all night.
The sting of a cut on the tip of your finger. It isn’t much more than a paper cut, but you can’t stop bumping it and opening it up again, and you know it’s been jammed full of dirt long before you could ever get the neosporin and bandaids out.
You’re vaguely aware that you smell terrible, but it built up so slowly you don’t quite notice. Until you stick your head inside your sleeping bag and then OH BOY.
The constant annoyance of bugs eventually fades and then you find yourself staring at the mosquitoes figuring every good hiking trip needs a blood sacrifice or two.
The slow building burn of the sun baking your feet inside your boots.
The little jarring up your arm as the metal tip of your hiking pole hits rock.
The ease of getting lost because you never bothered looking behind you when walking in and wow it all looks different once you turn around.
The lurch you feel in your gut as you stand in the edge of a cliff, the whole world spread out beneath you.
The squelching, sticking feeling of walking through a muddy bog.
Walking through a bog and knowing if you fall into an unseen bog hole you’ll likely never get out alive.
The strange security of grabbing onto plants you know would never do anything for you if you fell, yet there’s comfort in grabbing them anyways.
Somehow, no matter how much you plan, you end up with far too much food. You wonder if the local critters like freeze dried spaghetti so you don’t have to carry it back up the trail.
Marking your progress on the trail by one large trail side rock at a time. Ones you can sit on, ones in the shade, ones that just stand out. Even if you can’t make it to the end of the trail, you can make it to that next rock.
The utter relief when a cloud blocks the sun for a minute or two while you’re hiking, giving a tiny respite from the beating sun.
Rain sprinkles while hiking are the best thing ever. Little cool pin pricks helping whisk away your body heat, but not enough to make you want to pull out a raincoat.
The building desperation of knowing you need to sit, to really rest, but you’re on the side of a cliff and there’s no damn place to do so.
The ever present, prickling knowledge that a horse once fell off this trail and met a very violent end on the way down. They found it’s saddle impaled with its ribs.
The warmth of a campfire hiding in your clothes, then pressing into your skin as you move.
The slight give of a rotting log as you sit on it. Much more comfortable than sitting in a hard log.
The bracing nip of chill morning air as you emerge from your sleeping bag.
The quickly building warmth of the sun coming over the cliffs, finally rising for you even though it’s been up for hours.
Hearing the sheep baaaaing all night and listening to their dogs chase off coyotes. You’d honestly rather a wolf was out there, because those sheep dogs can, will, and want to fight to the death for their flock.
All food is good food after about day three. Even things you’d normally hate are suddenly delicious.
The strange realization that if the world ended while you were out here, you probably wouldn’t know. You can’t quite decide if this is comforting or terrifying.
