Alphonso Rawls was at the forefront of the onslaught of new tricks that hit vert ramps in the late 1980s. Along with a few of his friends, Alf escorted in a new era of tricks that went from unheard-of to the new standard within a few short years. Street, mini-ramp, vert— whatever was in front of him Alf ripped it. Here’s an Ollie blunt, as it was known at the time, at #mcgillscarlsbadskatepark sometime in the late 80s. Thank you all for the great reviews, comments, and shares of my Best Of Skateboarding video! It really means everything to me. I was especially stoked to get this reaction from @alphonzorawls because he is one of my biggest ramp influences from his @hstreetskateboards video parts. The 270 tailgrab chink-chink to fakie I do in the beginning was inspired by him... He first did it 540 no handed in the #NotTheNewHStreetVideo which I got an early copy of, before it was in skate shops. The one with actual AC/DC in it. David Mills, a Planet Earth rider made me the copy which I still have here. I would study it and get hyped from Alf’s part then go skate my ramp trying to come up with my own variations. It was 1990. That being said, his reaction makes me extremely stoked! Thanks Alf!
