Recap:

“Contact!”

Phantom took cover behind some crates with Soap, losing eyesight of Ghost and the rest of their team as she focused on the AQ soldiers. She switched guns as fast as she could, double checking that she had enough bullets before going prone and aiming between the slits on the side of the shelves.

She was able to drop 2 people on the top floor, and one heading down the stairs before she had to take cover again. The AQ were now lighting up her hiding spot with bullets, so she had no choice but to dash to the forklift in front of her. It wasn’t a lot of cover, but it was good enough for her to take down a heavily armored soldier hiding behind an ammo crate at the back of the warehouse.

Phantom couldn’t see anyone else, but still waited for Ghost’s call.

“We clear?”

“All clear.”

Phantom shouldered her gun, rolling out her shoulder with a wince at the pain in her arm, but it could wait a bit longer at this point.

“Search it. Let's find what they were hiding…”

“Lieutenant. This warehouse wasn’t on the schematics. Got a bad feeling about this.” Phantom lowered her voice when she stopped near him. “Check the container.” 

Ghost gestured to the one in front of them, with her nodding in agreement. With the help of two other Bravo soldiers, they opened the heavy metal doors to reveal a computer system with lines upon lines of code flying across the screen.

“The fuck is this?”

Phantom's eyes widened as she stepped into the container, trying to decipher the letters flying across the screen before it clicked.

“It’s English.”

“It’s all in English.”

Phantom scoffed as Ghost mimicked her words without realizing and stepped up to the controls. Her fingers flew across the keyboard before she flipped a switch to the side, waiting a moment after she heard metal creaking above her before making her way out of the container.

“This isn’t good…”

Ghost, Soap and Phantom watched as something was raised out of the top of the container.

 “Steaming Betsy...:” Soap muttered, stepping back slightly.

“Ballistic missiles.”

“It's a fucking mobile launcher.” Phantom snapped, her fists clenching tightly. "Shit."

“Sir, these'll go 1,000 miles.” 

“At least…” Ghost huffed. 

This mission just went from bad to worse as the weight of what they found settled on everyone's shoulders.  Phantom snapped back to the present as she noticed Soap starting to climb up a nearby crate to get a closer look at the side of the metal.

“How the hell did Iran get their hands on this?” 

Phantom stepped closer to Soap, though she kept her feet on the ground this time.

“Could be anyone at this point. Trade, black market, stealing.” Phantom shrugged. This wasn’t the first time she had witnessed something like this happening.

Ghost called out to one of the other team members.

“7-6, get us through to Laswell.”

“Roger, stand by... Bravo 7-6 Charlie to Watcher-1, how copy?”

“This is Watcher-1, send traffic.” Laswell called over the radio.

“Laswell, this is Ghost, we got something.”

“Tell me you found Hassan…”

“Hey, Phantom, take a look at this…” Soap pointed something out on the missile, Phantom's eyes finally understanding what symbol was on it.

The American flag was etched into the missile.

“Ghost, do you have Hassan?”

“Negative. We found a weapons cache. Hassan's got missiles... they're American.”

“0-7-- This is Gold Eagle Actual, repeat that last.” It must be bad if General Shepherd answered.

“I say again- Hassan has missiles.” Ghost retorted back.

“They have fucking American missiles, General.” Phantom called through her radio.

She walked away from the crate in annoyance, not caring about what else was said at that point as the pain in her head and arm started to become debilitating. 

“Let’s clear out to exfil.”

Phantom was one of the last people on the plane when they picked the team up. She took the time to rewrap her arm tightly with the help of Alpha 0-2, who also used some antiseptic she handed him from her kit to try and clear her head wound-sans her helmet. She hissed in pain, knuckles whitening in her lap as she sat as still as possible.

“I know, kid, gonna hurt like a bitch.”

Phantom chuckled, tilting her head slightly to allow him easier access to the rest of the wound.

“Probably gonna need stitches.” She groaned, earning a small yet pained smile from the man in front of her.

August nearly had a stroke when he found out she had been planning on leaving, a far cry from how he couldn't wait to get rid of her when this whole thing started. It had taken her going to him and pulling him down into a kiss, her fingers running through his hair for him to calm down, his hands holding her waist and pulling her against him as if to confirm that yes, she was still there.

They sat around the living room watching a movie, Mike sitting at her feet, holding her legs as they crossed over his chest while she sat on the couch between Walter and Sy, each resting hand on her knee. She couldn’t concentrate on the movie, the howling in her mind growing in intensity. She’s been able to ignore it before then but was starting to become an annoyance, especially as it increased in volume.

“--anie?” She snapped out of it, blinking quickly and shaking her head. They were looking at her, Mike tilting his head back to stare at her upside down.

“Does it ever stop?” She asked.

“Does what ever stop, doll?” Sy asked.

“The howling. Does it ever stop? Or is it just something I have to get used to?” She asked and they exchanged looks.

“What howling?” Mike asked, “I don’t--do you guys hear howling? Is it an Alpha thing?”

“No.” Geralt said.

“When did it start?” August asked.

“Before I shifted when I ran off.” Stephanie said, “I was able to ignore it, but it’s getting so loud.”

“Have you heard it before that?” Walter asked and she thought back.

“First time was when Geralt and I went to get my things…and Jordan was there.” She said, “It got deafening, but Geralt was able to break through it and drown it out."

"He's still trying to Call her?" Mike asked, "Give it up, asshole!" She ran her nails through his hair at that and he shuddered, turning his head and pressing his lips to the side of her knee.

"Do you feel any compulsion to go to him?" August asked but she shook her head.

"He has to be in proximity, right?" Sy asked, more rhetorically than anything.

"Yes." Geralt answered regardless and got up from his seat, heading out of the cabin. The howling suddenly cut off and she sighed.

"Blessed silence." She said and looked over as Geralt came back, a scowl on his face. "He rabbit again?"

"Fucking coward." He grumbled and sat back down, but not before pressing a kiss to the top of her head.

"Who you bunkin' with tonight, babe?" Sy asked and Mike tilted his head back again, looking up at her with a pout and she covered his face with her hand, making him smile.

"If Mr. Needy here doesn’t stop giving me puppy eyes." She said, "I'll sleep with Sy tonight."

"Aw, man." Mike pouted.

"You had her all this morning!" Sy shot back.

"And you guys had her all last night." Mike retorted, rolling his eyes, and she blinked, shaking her head slightly.

"First off: that makes me sound like…a woman of questionable moral fiber, and secondly: you guys start fighting about it and I'm sleeping on the couch." She said.

"Female Alphas have a tendency to unite packs and birth strong Alphas that can control entire states." August said, almost offhandedly, and she arched a brow at him. "Not uncommon for them to keep multiple partners."

"Okay, well, I'm good with what I got, don't need any more," She said, "And kids?" She shook her head, "Not for me."

"You don't want to carry our pups, babe?" Sy asked, a shiver racing down her spine at the timbre of his voice.

"M-moot point anyway." She said, "I had my tubes tied years ago. Pain in the ass to find a doctor to do it, but I’m sterile now."

"It's reversible." Geralt said and she shot him a look.

"But I ain't getting it reversed." She said.

"Your body, your choice." Sy said, but he still sounded a bit dejected. "You'd be carryin'em anyway, so we have no say in it."

"So we can nut all we want and not have to worry about babies!" Mike said, "Nice!" She reached down and flicked the tip of his nose. "Ow!"

"No fully baked cream pies for us." Sy said and there was a pause before she burst into laughter.

"You did not just refer to children as "fully baked cream pies"!" She said.

"Am I wrong?"

"Not colloquially, but still."

US imperialism, DC and Marvel style

There's a book called 'How To Read Donald Duck' which is about Disney's role in propagating and inculcating US imperialism that I feel similar things can be said of DC and Marvel, the latter a future Disney subsidiary, that would have insidious and disturbing implications for former US colonies like the Philippines. The Philippines is in a state of constant US neocolonialism, given there are American military bases here and many Filipinos are very sympathetic to America that it would take guts to cut it off from us.

It's kind of depressing how people like Gerry Alanguilan don't seem to trust more Eastern influence in Philippine comics, but see no issue working for DC and Marvel that it seems some Filipinos would rather allow American neocolonialism to continue, rather than (re)building ties with the Philippines' closest neighbours. The Philippines would benefit more from allying with neighbours like China, Japan and Indonesia than it would with a warmonger like the US. But I suppose brain drain's preferable to building stronger ties to rest of the Far East.

What makes DC and Marvel so good at propagating US imperialism isn't just due to the abundance of patriotic figures like Captain America, Superman and the Falcon, but also how both aliens and actual foreigners often work in America far longer than they should or could've done with countries like Britain, Australia and Canada. Alpha Flight is one of the few Marvel publications to be consistently set outside of America, but even then it's intermittently published. It's all in the name of achieving the American Dream.

Whether if they're extraterrestrials like Supergirl and Superman, or proper foreigners like Nightcrawler and Betsy Braddock, America will always be the place where they better themselves in. America is the place where they'll be willing to work for US organisations like the Avengers and X-Men, regardless of their own citizenship (thus national allegiance to). Wolverine is Canadian, but tends to live and work in America. Not unlike Walt Disney's own father by the way. Betsy Braddock is British but works in America just the same.

One would wonder why Storm's marriage to Black Panther, an African superhero by the way, never lasted this long nor has her stay in any African country, despite being the X-Men's pre-eminent African member. It's more appealing to work in America and be the resident exotic black girl, than to actually work in Kenya and represent Kenyans as they really are. DC and Marvel's US imperialist ideology is more abhorrent whenever they assist in continuing US neocolonialism in the Philippines.

So it's seen as an achievement for Filipinos to work for DC and Marvel than it is to build their own Bumilangit, an Indonesian superhero publisher by the way, featuring the likes of Darna, Captain Barbell and Lastikman. Canada's own Lev Gleason has done the same with Northguard and Captain Canuck, but to be honest there was something like Bayan Knights here in the Philippines. But I don't think it lasted long, as far as I know about it, so it seems attempts at Philippine nationalism are often undermined by US imperialism.

I feel Filipinos don't have much integrity the way Indonesians and even Canadians do, that's why it's easier to work for DC and Marvel than to find a way to better the Philippines and even build stronger ties to the rest of the East. US imperialism works too well with us, that's why we often work for DC and Marvel. But it's a not good sign, especially if it undermines national and cultural integrity.

Vehicle

I didn't know if I didn't like that idea, or if I just hated it. One of the things I never wanted to do in my life was to have to take care of a case with the devil himself. But I couldn't complain, I was just the hound dog. He led us to a black car that was a little bigger than the patrol cars.

He opened the side door and growled, "Get in." We got in and I had to hold my nose. It smelled terrible in there. I smelled old blood, lots of sweat, but also fear, way too much fear. I also smelled what happened when someone was too scared. We sat in silence and waited for the car to take us wherever we needed to go. We were completely separated from the driver and enveloped in darkness. I sat back, when I heard the purr of the engine, I sighed loudly.

Animal

Animals and I just don't get along, I've tried time and time again and all I've ever gotten in return is bites. On the other hand, every animal he meets loves Brutus, maybe it's his calm attitude, I don't know.

One thing is for sure, Biting Betsy likes him and that sheep is the devil on earth. She's adored Brutus since day one, even eats out of his hand. The only feeling she has for me, on the other hand, is 'Come any closer and I'll bite your butt off', every time.

Drink

They asked us to come closer and gave all three of us, since Mattias had decided to stay with us, a cup with a strong smelling liquid in it.

"Since our guests of honor have arrived, let's celebrate," her father said loudly, and everyone cheered. I took a sip and felt it burn down my throat. I decided not to drink any more.

Shouting

Daisy could hardly answer as he continued to speak. "You've got the whole village in an uproar. Are you even aware of the consequences of your little escapade?" No, she wasn't. She also didn't know why Lukas was now storming towards her, glowing eyes and the suffocating smell of Alpha bringing her to her knees.

"Daisy!"

He yelled her name through the street and she froze. Jacob stood in front of her, she caught a glimpse of Joshua hurrying after his angry brother, followed by a grumpy Sheila. Oh, Daisy had messed up.

Lie

"I'm terribly sorry, Paul," I apologized. "I'll meet him tomorrow, I promise," I said confidently. I shouldn't refuse, after all he took the time to meet me, I should be grateful. You're really good at lying to yourself. I shook my head and smiled at him.

"Something on your mind, Elias?" I smiled even wider than before and spoke: "No, definitely not." An actor is something you shouldn't aspire to be. "Elias, if you want to talk about-" "I'm fine," I said with a serious tone and he gave up.

Water

My gaze then wandered to the small lake in front of us. The water glistened under the sun. The wind had died down, so the water was calm.

Laughter

His cheeks puffed out slightly, as if he was trying to stifle a laugh, but then he burst out laughing. He threw his head back and laughed so loudly that it almost drowned out the rain outside.

Books

The library was beautiful, so many books I had never seen before. I ran my finger down the spine of every book until I landed on one that really interested me. It was about magic, a genre that had always fascinated me.

Knights and Pawns seems to be both a safe place and a dangerous place for omegas at the same time. There's omega-only schools where Alphas are not allowed to attend, and societal rules that claim omegas should not be harmed, as it is deeply frowned upon to do so. Many omegas live sheltered, and dare I say, spoiled lives (like Daniel). They're petted and adored, and allowed to indulge in non-traditional gender norms.

And yet...

On the flip side, there's omegas, immigrant ones, sold so easily into the sex trade. Omegas seem to be a way of barter in situations like Daniel's. "Kitties" are lusted over and Alphas seem to barely contain themselves around them. Even married omegas, like Daniel, aren't always safe from either their spouses, or even rogue Alphas who hit on them (and might do more if they could get away with it).

Overall it seems like a deeply sensual, sexy little world, and omegas are both treated as the madonna and the whore all at once.

Omegas are super rare, and physically vastly less powerful than Alphas and a lot of betas, when the omega is female moreso than males, but still. And though generally 20% of the polulation is born omega, only 5 to 10% are omegas born to non rich parents. (Usually because somehow Alphas with a recessive omega gene mated a beta with a recessive omega gene, or two betas with an omega gene mated, or a young unmated Alpha knocked up a poor omega sex worker). So that's only 10% poorer omegas for 40% Alphas straight through all layers of society. Which means only one in four Alphas can even meet an omega in their social circle when they're not at the very top, and even 10% of the elite Alphas cannot mate an omega in their circle. Now as we know in our world when the male female ratio gets seriously out of whack, men go to pretty extreme lengths to find a wife. Mail order brides? Totally a thing. The Alpha omega ratio is definitely unbalanced in my world. So poor omegas may get sold away to rich Alphas, or simply sold! Young poor omega sex workers are a goldmine, especially prostituted to young Alphas with no prospect of mating one ever. And what happens to those pups, hm? Does someone intervene? Do they get adopted out? Can a kitty keep their puppies and do the omega ones get prostituted out like their mothers? Wherever he came from, Johnny made a run for it. Which is not to say that all poorer parents sell their omega pups. Far from it. And some marry regular Alpha or beta partners from their circle of life. But parents will try to marry them 'up', which decreases the already scarce dating pool even further. It's really ugly, there's whole mob schemes to get families from all over the world to the US with an omega pup and then to pressure them into bartering their child away. That's what Daniel is fighting: to get to those omegas and pretty girls - Alphas are not immune to beta pretty girls - and set him up in his mob. Yes, still mob, but with Church backing. These kitties are properly mated and certainly not only to gangsters, but simply to decent Alphas and if anyone comes for their pups looking to make them into sex workers they can expect a visit from the likes of Louie LaRusso, John Kreese, Mike Barnes or Dutch, who we all know is feral. Or indeed Sister George who has a very mean right hook.

So on the one hand, you have omegas who come from generations of rich Alpha/omega parents, Daniel, who wasn't born quite there but has money and would be very attractive to the 10% rich Alphas who couldn't marry an omega acquaintance, and Johnny, who fled his sex worker mother after presenting rather late and was taken under the wing of John and Betsy Kreese.

Finishing school omegas? Set for life. Working class omegas mating their childhood sweetheart? Poor, but very cherished. Kitties that got bartered away or kidnapped? Yeah, that's ugly. Remember Anna, Terry's drunken revenge side piece? Got caught up in a shootout, the Alpha cop involved took her home, and that was that. He was 'gonna get around' to setting her up somewhere safe, but she went into heat, he bit her, was discharged from the force for misconduct, couldn't care less and now they run a Chicago bar.

Since I can't post here on Tumblr the full formatted fics, I decided to share as a stand-alone the full-size version of edited pics I include in the fics galleries.

Tec stuffs (aka Behind The Art) I merely changed colors (which isn't as quick and easy as it might sounds – it took me hours to properly have everything fixed). My intention was to turn the hair from Brian's blond to black, but how the hair in this specific art are drawn, is impossible (there are no highlights, so it would be just a block of black). To make it work I would need to hand-repaint them (which I wouldn't know where to start from, especially to fit the rest of the coloring). So I instead decided to color them purple and retroactively return to the fic to make the story work with the image. Crazy, isn't it?

Originally I wanted to use the art of James Braddock with the original Captain Britain costume as seen in Excalibur (2001) #3, and merely switch head with the one of the pic from the trade paperback (I needed the masked face). Changed my mind, but kept the color scheme.
