Chuki's Corner - Alopecia X
See the dog at the top? That’s my fur baby Chuki. See the dog below her? That most likely will be her in an unknown amount of time. What does she have? A disorder with no cure called Alopecia X. “Alopecia”, meaning hair loss…. “X” meaning unknown.
A dog with Alopecia X starts off losing hair over their trunk and legs and the hairloss gradually continues throughout their entire body, sparing their head and front legs. Sometimes the skin stays the same pigment, sometimes it may become dark (black). The cause and cure of this disorder is a mystery to veterinarians and dermatologists alike, although there are options for medication to promote hair re-growth. These medications need to be administered up to three times a day for the bulk of your pet’s life…. With side effects. There is also only an estimated 50% of a success rate for this treatment.
This mess had started with Chukes a few months ago when I began to notice clumps of her hair on the floor. Her stomache quickly thereafter became bald and the loss of hair in clumps continued. We are now at a point where her stomache, back legs, chest and sides are bare or almost to that point, and the hair loss continues daily. After blood tests, skin scrapings, hair follicle examinations and hours of interviews with specialists we are at an almost certain diagnosis (one more test to do for another disorder) of Alopecia X.
Now there is a positive side to this mysterious disorder. Her organs and internal health will not be affected. Negative side? Risks of secondary skin infections, never being able to go in the sun without being fully covered, scaling, itching and of course looking funny.
After a lot of thought, I have decided to let nature take it’s course and let her hair do what it will. NO MEDS. NO SIDE EFFECTS. NO CHEMICALS. Our only option now is stocking up on an extremely gorge seasonal wardrobe of soft loose fabrics and see where this crazy road will lead us. Although Chuki’s hair was the most beautiful thing about her exterior, nothing is more beautiful than her loving nature, her soft heart and her sweet soul. She will still be the most beautiful fur-less baby in my eyes.
