A couple things, I think.
For one thing, it's often in the context of, like, appealing to the great hive mind of women or whatever-- as in, "Ladies, we don't like to talk about this, but we all do it, don't we?". Also, in my particular experience, it often seems to accompany a sort of regressive idea of gender, which spoils it for me for the other times it's used.
Also, in some places, there's sometimes a class and racial component to it, in that the standards for being a "lady" for black women are much higher than they are for white women. So sometimes it's a dog whistle about someone's class/racial status, as in, "She's a lady, not like those other females." (I also hate when people refer to women en masse as females. Female-as-adjective is one thing; females-as-noun is quite another.)

The former one. I usually don't notice the latter one.

Yeah, I have much less of an issue with "ladies and gentlemen."

I feel that way too! And character building is far more intuitive and rewarding, because you know these people so well, and you can see yourself sort of scattered across them.
yes yes, it's a lot like that. i haven't sat down to attempt writing out any stories with these characters, but they've been jumping about in my head and to familiarize myself with them is so nice. they're like old friends come to visit. certain characters never fully leave you, i think. i might write out some dialogue sketches tomorrow, just to get a feel for things. it's been a long time.

how do you feel about theory that Katrina is Moloch? I have a lot of mixed feelings, and I think the implications of this child complicates it…
I've posted before about how at this point they've been so fucking lazy and terrible about their writing of Katrina that her being evil is basically the only way to salvage it for me.

Ooooh that’s very interesting! I have a story going now that’s based on childhood stories and it’s an incredible feeling to write them down and explore them.
childhood stories are very pure, i think - they represent something powerful because whatever you came up with at that age probably wasn't tainted by any outside influences and yeah, it's definitely incredible to revisit things like that.
i feel like all the things i created when i was younger are special in a sense that they represent me at my lowest common denominator - they feel a lot more accessible than a lot of my current stuff and the more i explore these ideas, the more of a goldmine in them i seem to uncover. it's so great.

this sounds so cool ahhhh!!!
thank you! my favorite thing about this idea is that it's literally an adaption of childhood stories i used to recite to myself when i was a little girl. all the characters are just human versions of small toys i had, and i've updated little things like that without tweaking the whole foundation, so it's really funny how the idea formed
(for example, fun fact, the whole thing about one of the sisters "missing" has more to do with the fact that as a child i had these dolls that were part of those 'collect them all!' sets and i only had two out of three - so my dolls were always talking about this "longlost sister" of theirs and in this adaption, i've held on to that aspect and tied the narrative around it, too)
but yeah, they would be three brown girls with wildly colorful hair who get to be adventurous, dynamic, wild and a little sassy but mostly just very serene and precious and it'd be great

I've burned out though! You take so much time and care to build worlds and characters. That kind of detail makes for the best things.
I find a lot of fun in the details. I like nuances and intricacies most of all. One of my suitemates is also a writer but complains about things like outlining, which I find very interesting. While she sees it as difficult or tedious, I do it as a precursor to any project I endeavor because you can mess things up so much if you jump in without any sort of direction. I think for some writers outlining or thinking deeply about their worlds is really daunting? But I love listening to how different people approach the craft.
And, I don't think you take any less care in what you do just because you work at a faster pace! I bet it can be exhausting because it's so much mental labor but it's so much more productive than lamenting over a character name or trying to make sure all your subplots are conducive to the overarching narrative, which are the sorts of things I am so prone to get hung up on.

me too.
for the past couple of days, i was really into my animated series pitch idea but i'm trying to let it ferment for a bit; i've been thinking of new characters idly and whatever, but actual writing is not happening for me.
i feel like you are more prolific. i am a person who takes years to accomplish a single project. it's rather shameful.
