My father-in-law hired the unparalleled @christinebeee to paint his grandchildren (half being our kiddos, the 2 on the left). Christine does a fair number of similar commissions but this was extra nice since she’d gotten quite familiar with several of the subjects over the years (as an honorary, eccentric aunt). On their second day at the Hilton Hawaiian Village, on the island of Oahu, “I have a surprise,” Loid began. “I’ve booked a family spa day! And I even got us matching Alohawear.” He handed Yor and Anya dresses while already donning a white floral printed Aloha shirt.

Anya squealed and ran to the bathroom to change.

“This is beautiful!” Yor beamed, “but why all white?” She questioned. Her light floral dress was a halter top, cinched at the waist before flowing down into a floor length skirt— perfect for hot Hawaiian days.

“I rather liked the lack of color, kind of a blank canvass representing our new beginnings.”

“Is that what this trip is? A new beginning?”

“Yes. No more intrigues, just our new, real life together as a family.”

Yor smiled, “I love the sound of that.”

“I love this!” Anya giggled as she spun around in her new dress. It was a cute, t-shirt dress down to her knees, with a frilled hem appropriate for her age.

The family headed down to Mandara spa located on the 4th floor of the hotel. At the reception, Loid bid the girls a ‘have fun,’ before being separated- males and females. That was fine with him, because he wanted the mother and child to have a fun girls day experience. What Yor didn’t know is Loid had other plans…

Yor and Anya started out with a 50 minute, hot stone massage using “batu” or volcanic basalt stones, special oils, and warm water to soothe muscles and relax the body. For Yor it was truly invigorating because of her tough job, and for Anya it was simply a delight to experience new things. After the massage, Loid had arraigned a special treatment in the salon. The women received manicures and pedicures, pretty painted nails, and finally new hairdos to truly bring the Hawaiian experience home.

The hair dresser worked with Yor’s tucked bun style, curling her loose tendrils to frame her face. She then replaced her hair band with a special haku lei po’o made of white plumeria, red carnations, and ti leaf tips all woven together, rested along the scalp line of Yor’s forehead like a crown.

“Wow! Ma, that’s so pretty!!” Anya proclaimed. She too was dolled up with pigtails, decorated with baby’s breath and purple plumerias.

“You’re adorable too,” Yor smiled.

“The colors really pop on your raven hair,” the hair stylist beamed at her work. “And the color matches your eyes.”

Pampered and gorgeous, the two women meet Loid outside at reception before heading out to enjoy the beautiful balmy weather. They have lunch at one of the hotels restaurants, then Loid suggests taking a walk on the beach. Anya let’s out a giggle, quickly followed up with an exclamation of joy about walking on the sand. Yor simply smiles, but Loid gives her a wink.

The hotel sat right along the beach in Waikiki. Gentle breezes brought salty ocean scents wafting up from the lapping surf. White sand speckled with a myriad of shells and occasional black a’ama crab skittering away from tourists while searching for food. The family walked along holding their footwear in the sand, following the surf line. Anya would occasionally stop to pick up a trinket as Loid and Yor held hands and followed along. It was just as perfect as the stories of Hawaii told.

As the beach wrapped around the hotel, it lead to a beautiful lagoon of blue green cerulean. A calmer body of water connected by an inlet to the Pacific ocean. The family followed along the hotel path watching newbie kayakers test their abilities and paddle boarders praying to stay upright. It led to an open front banquet room under the hotel overlooking the water. Fronting this, stood a white arched trellis covered in beautiful Hawaiian foliage, a man standing there holding a book, and a woman holding flowers.

“Looks like they’re getting ready for a wedding,” Yor noted aloud.

“Correct,” Loid started walking closer to the man. “Ours.”

“Wait, what?” Yor tugged on Loid’s hand, though not stopping his quest, while Anya continued to giggle. “But we’re already married. Anya you knew?!”

Loid smiled. “I thought it would be nice to do things the right way, with vows and everything.”

“Aloha,” the officiant greeted as his female helper handed a bouquet to Yor and a basket of petals to Anya. “Hele mai,” he gestured toward the trellis. “Please, stand under here.” Once Loid and a red-faced Yor took their places, hands held between them, the man continued. “Don’t worry, I know you weren’t prepared for this, so I will prompt when it’s your turns to answer. Shall we begin?”

“Yes,” Loid squeezed Yor’s hand. “It’s overdue.”

“Aloha mai kakou, we are gathered here today on this beautiful Hawaiian day to celebrate the union of Loid Forger and Yor Briar Forger in the presence of their daughter Anya. A marriage is made in the deepest sense to the exclusion of all others, and it is entered into with the desire and hope that it will last for life. And while there will always be ups and downs, it will be with your love and commitment to each other, and your family to weather any storm.”

“Do you, Loid Forger, take Yor Briar as your wife? To love and cherish, through sickness and in health, for the rest of your lives?”

Loid, “I do.”

The officiant now turned to Yor. “And do you Yor Briar take Loid Forger as your husband? To love and cherish, through sickness and in health, for the rest of your lives?”

Yor, “I do.”

The officiant placed his hand on Loid and Yor’s combined hands. “May you always share open and honest communication between each other. May you respect each other’s individual talents and gifts and give full support to each other’s professional and personal pursuits. May all the years to come be filled with moments to celebrate and be a life-long source of excitement, contentment, affection, respect, and devotion for one another.”

He next addressed Anya. “Do you Anya Forger approve of the marriage between your father and mother?”

“Yes!” Anya squealed excitedly. “Yes!”

“Then if there are no objections, by the powers vested in me by the State of Hawaii, and the approval of miss Anya, I now pronounce you husband and wife.” The officiant took a step back as he gestured at Loid. “You may now kiss your beautiful bride!”

With excited squeals, through a hail of floating petals tossed up by Anya and the helper, Loid cupped Yor’s face and pulled her in for a lingering amorous kiss. “I love you,” Loid whispered as he gently wiped away a few stray happy tears.

“I love you, too,” Yor whispered back with a sparkling smile. “You’ve made me so happy.”

“And you complete me,” Loid reciprocated. “You and Anya give me a new reason to live.”

The officiant patted Loid on the shoulder. “Ho’omaika’i. Congratulations, and enjoy the rest of your stay here in Hawaii.” He wished before he and the female helper took their leave.

“Now you’re really stuck with us!” Anya teased at Yor before turning serious. “So, when do I get a sibling?”
