JUSTICE FOR ACE !!!!! people are so mad on Twitter, I still remember how pissed off I was at the liminal space episode, it cemented completely that no one cares about ace and they literally did a redux only so much worse bc a day ago they were calling each other love of their lives and now she's making heart eyes all episode at this rando while not giving a rats ass about ace? It's just so weird. And lmfao I love that this fandom is very positive and close with the writers/cast but wow some people are really up their asses like this is not good writing, it wasn't good writing in s3 and it certainly isn't now, you can say that you don't have to act like these writers are perfect bc they're messing up big time, like you said they knew this was the final season even before the notice bc the cw was imploding? They could've focused on the curse or at this point just given us non romance things. I just really want to know why they are so obsessed with having her with every single man that breathes her way, especially with the timeline it gets even more absurd all this in a year??? That's psychotic, I honestly don't know how they could make it up unless there's some plot twist or something.
Yeah that has been one of my main issues with the show, I get the idea of wanting a sexually liberated free young woman and I’m not opposed to that at all but it’s the execution of it, which makes it less than desirable. Personally for me it cheapens what she says and does in relation to her romantic feeling because she can and will just get another love interest. And yeah no I love this show I do but the writing is not that great half the episodes are exposition dumps and nonsensical magical fixits and that can be fun but when you couple that with unnecessary romantic drama especially it can just feel like a lot and not in a good way. I would’ve loved for the season to have been a celebration of the series and characters giving Nancy a win in the sense that she finally gets to be in love something that she’s wanted for so long and for Ace to feel like he’s somebody’s first choice instead of the endless back and forth. And sure a nace endgame is almost all but guaranteed but if the journey to get there is sour will the destination feel sweet?

Me: I'm suppose to be working on my 2 WIPs
Formidable - almost done and in need of adding more details and editing. I challenged myself with doing dialogue and now the characters won't stop talking. (my s3 fixit)
Transcendent - I think it's mostly done too but I wasn't feeling where the story went. The Pen here didn't have Eloise as a friend so she's more introverted. Entirely Pen's POV (The soulmate au)
Also me:
Starting a new story: The Care and Feeding of Colin Bridgerton - This is a modern AU with Pen making a plan of her own utilizing what she calls : the care and feeding of Colin Bridgerton. I'm pretty excited where this one goes.
What's the oppsite of writers block? Where you get too many ideas and now you're starting to get a pile of stories that need to be done. It's in your head but you just need to actually WRITE IT.
ughh these two are just too adorable. KiSS already!

for the fic ask meme - 3, 9, 17, 23! <3
ANON MY BELOVED <3 thank you this is so many!!! sorry this took so long to answer!!!! i wound up having a lot to say rip
3: Do you have any upcoming WIPs? How far along are you with them?
i have 3!! there was one thing i was working on prior to nov 5 of last year, which i have only just started considering again. the tag for that is “secret project tag” because well. it is a secret. im not even saying that like “oh im playing i secretly do want to be asked” i dont bc if i told anyone about it i think that i would stop being able to work on it :( like i’m just not sure i’ll finish!!! in the beginning i didn’t even want to say that it was writing, yk? i only even started tagging it because it’s obnoxious to talk about something i can’t talk about & i wanted people to be able to blacklist. i am only about 10k into it, and it will probably wind up being quite long, 150k bare minimum, so it will probably be a very long time before it ever sees the light of day, IF it sees the light of day at all.
second wip is of course the claire-centric envesseled from @cambionverse. cally and i have been struggling with it on and off since 2013 and it is Finally Time. for anyone not familiar with it, cambionverse is a fixit for the end of s6 (initially written during the airing of s6) that centers on claire novak, cas’s vessel’s daughter from s4, ben braeden, dean’s not-kid from s3/s6, and jesse turner, the little half demon from season 5, as young adults. they’re basically ocs at this point and the idea was to do one story for each of them. we did one for jesse and one for ben and claire’s was supposed to be the end of the trilogy, but we got started on a bunch of side projects and had to rewrite almost everything to prep for it, so it’s taken nearly a decade. i am so glad to finally be getting to it!! right now we’ve got about 36k, the first chapter is completely done, the second chapter is in a couple of pieces we’re trying to stitch back together, and the third chapter has like half a scene in it. it’s slow going rn because we’re sort of putting everything from previous drafts back together in coherent pieces, but i think after we get to truly new stuff we haven’t written before (this is our third draft...) it will go a lot faster. i hope so anyway, because we have 7 chapters an an epilogue planned lol. and there’s no guarantee it won’t get bigger! as these things often do.
third & final wip is ofc triptych part 3, the third in the series after to an angel and broken road, currently being called 12:46pm because i don’t have anything better to call it. (12:46pm is when i had the idea for it, or more accurately when @cleaver-2007 GAVE me the idea like the horrible influence they are.) i wrote some about it here! right now i only have about 2500 words for it because i’m struggling with my structure + trying to devote most of my free time to envesseled. i don’t want to give away the big spoiler for its premise but i am really looking forward to it & also terrified because i have seen other people doing it and i think they probably did it/will do it better than me. the way i pick my projects out is “nobody else has done this in a way that satisfies me” or “nobody else has done this at all” because then i don’t feel like im competing with anybody. like NO ONE ELSE wrote a fic where all of camelot, including uther, got magic. i was the sole corner on that market so there was no pressure yk? but this is a fairly popular concept so im angsting hard about pulling it off!!!!!
9: Are there any fics you’d love to see but don’t want to write yourself? What are they?
weirdly enough not too many! most of the time if i REALLY wanna see something and no one else has done it i will simply do it myself, assuming im in a place where i can take on a big project. such as for example a good nuanced john winchester fic. i’m sure there are some but i’m blanking, nothing is coming to mind...i think the only one i can think of right now is really long season/series/episode rewrites, but even then i am reluctant to get too invested in longer works because What If The Author Has Bad Opinions. i bet i will think of a better answer to this question when i am trying to fall asleep tonight
17: What has been the proudest moment for you so far since you started writing?
ok, so it’s a tie. one is of course the huge response to broken road, particularly that bombshell of a 6th chapter...even though i don’t think broken road is my best work, it is by far my most popular one, and i was and still am absolutely humbled by the huge amount of people who followed along week-to-week, who sent in almost literally more comments than i could reply to before it was time to post the next chapter. i know fic popularity is a matter of writing for the right thing at the right time, but it felt like the work resonated with so many people! i can’t even describe with words how that feels.
the second moment is when i finished my first-ever fanfic, which was a novelization of ocarina of time. i started writing it because i wanted to read a novelization but nobody else got to the end...i’d read dozens of deku tree chapters and no ganon’s tower chapters. it wasn’t a great or even very good fanfic, but it was a FINISHED one, and as far as i know i was the first person on FFN (maybe even the only person on FFN) to actually get to the end. when i got done i was like “that is literally the most fun i’ve ever had doing anything and i wanna do it for the rest of my life” and i started a novelization of majora’s mask the very same day. haven’t quit since!
23: What’s one piece of advice you would give to anyone who wants to start writing or posting their writing online?
i actually have a whole list of advice posts but i’m going to cheat and do two again anyway. the first one is, OUTLINE. i swear by the triangle method which posits you need 3 things to do well: enthusiasm about what you’re doing, time to do it, and to know where you’re going next. that last step IS CRUCIAL.
my second piece of advice is to have fun!!! i see posts constantly about how wrting is hard and it sucks and people quit writing all the time because they didn’t get enough comments or whatever, but if i had based my willingness to write on the amount of comments i got i would never have finished my first story, let alone go on to write another (almost) two decades. if you can find even one person to be excited with your shit about, that can be enough. write bc you love to do it - if you don’t, why bother at all?

author interview tag
I was tagged by @7-percent. Thanks so much for tagging me!
Name: discordantwords
Fandoms: X-Files was my first fannish love, but I'm currently only active in BBC Sherlock.
Where you post: Everything I write eventually ends up on AO3. I'll put ficlets on Tumblr, which you can find in my little contributions tag, or collected on AO3 in Little Contributions.
Most popular multi-chapter fic: (Never) Turn Your Back to the Sea, the S4 fixit I wrote for @thetimemoves. I'm still absolutely stunned by the reaction that story received.
Favourite story you’ve written so far: Ahhhh, there's just no easy answer to this question. I love The Pillar upon Which England Rests, because it's the first story I ever wrote in the Sherlock fandom. I love Out There, because it married my previous fandom love to my current one AND I'm incredibly pleased with how the blend of Sherlock and X-Files cases worked out. I love (Never) Turn Your Back to the Sea because it was just so incredibly, incredibly cathartic to write.
Fic you were nervous to post: I always get a little bit nervous before posting anything. I was most nervous about Inscrutable to the Last, I guess, because it was my first Johnlock fic in the fandom and essentially a reboot of S3 and I wasn't sure how it was going to land. And I almost always get anxious posting the last chapter of a multi-chapter story (like the recently-completed Borrowed Ghosts), because I desperately hope that the ending feels satisfying but you never really know until the responses start to roll in.
How you choose your titles: I have no particular method. I wish I did! Titles are hard for me. Sometimes it will be based on a song lyric or a quote. The title and chapter headings for Inscrutable to the Last came from The Secret Life of Walter Mitty. Prince with a Thousand Enemies references Watership Down. The Pillar upon Which England Rests comes from Sherlock telling John that "England would fall" if Mrs Hudson were to leave Baker Street.
Do you outline: Generally, yes. Casefics and multi-chapter fics, absolutely. But the one-shots tend to just sort of happen.
Complete: 22 BBC Sherlock fics (that includes one perpetual WIP that I hope to finish one day, and a collection of ficlets that I add to periodically)
In progress: Many, many fics in various stages of completion, from snippets to full and robust outlines. Some may never see the light of day, some I hope to polish up for 2021.
Coming soon/not yet started: Coming soon is an as-yet-untitled fic for @khorazir, who bid on me in the 2019 FTH auction and has been patiently waiting ever since. The outline is coming together nicely, and I'm hoping to start posting in January. Not yet started is a cracky AU called Golden Ticket that has lived in my head for years and will finally see the light of day next year even if it kills me.
Do you accept prompts: I'm always willing to take prompts for ficlets, but I make no promises. The muse is fickle. I keep all of the prompts I receive saved in a word document, so even if I don't get to it right away I might come back to it at a later date.
Upcoming story you are most excited to write: There is a scene in the fic I am writing for @khorazir that I am SO EXCITED about. I can't wait to sit down and actually write it out.
Upcoming story you are most excited about: I pretty much turn into an overenthusiastic puppy every time I get an AO3 update notification in my inbox for any of the fics/authors that I follow, so it's impossible to narrow it down to any one particular story. This fandom is an embarrassment of riches, even after all this time, and I love being a part of it.
Tagging: @thetimemoves @therealsaintscully @221b-carefulwhatyouwishfor @vulpesmellifera @vulgarweed @khorazir @mama-orion and absolutely anyone else who sees this and wants to play along!

tma fic recs? i went into ao3 and it was a mess
yeah it’s been slow-going for me too because of the amount of freak shit people post/have posted, as well as the fact that a lot of the high-kudos’d jm fics are from before s4 really ramped up their relationship development. and i’ve found i can get pretty picky about martin’s characterization. here’s a couple i’ve read and liked
(now with a read more because it’s gotten long) (updated 2/15/20)
the umbrella (4.6k) - mag160 fixit, probably my favorite fixit so far. includes canon-level non-graphic blinding. but it has a happy ending. it’s tma, i don’t need things to be light and fluffy all the time, i’m good with canon level darkness yk? as long as there’s a happy ending and the gays’ love for each other is pure.
feel the done days and you’re pulling through (1.8k) - jon deprogramming from being an avatar. living a very domestic and idyllic life. it’s adorable
all resistance wearing thin (4.7k) - ok this is the ONLY web!martin concept ive ever liked. bc it doesn’t make martin a crazy villain hes still himself and hes just NICE he LOVES people (aka jon). and we all like to indulge in a bit of mutually obsessive love. happy ending :)
some invitation of light (4k) - i love the joke that “martin is proof that playing hard to get works,” and this fic is in line with that. i’m picky about jealousy in fics but this one was enjoyable
ways to save the world (19.3k) - oooooogh urghhhhh jon gets trapped in the lonely and martin communicates to him through passages of poetry… im a total sucker for epistolary fics and this one was so GOOD
*
above all shadows (4.3k) - canon divergent from s4, written before the finale. very fairytale esque. theres some paragraphs in this that made me go HAM
catch and release (2.3k) - pre canon divergence au where theyre both avatars being spooky and doing a back and forth. martin is full lonely and jon got RAISED BY SPIDERS. somewhat edgy but in a fun way. we love creepy shit
agate, amber, amethyst (994) - short sweet and soppy. magpie jon is so utterly charming to me.
reciprocity (1.9k) - short and sweet caretaking stuff. both these bitches need to sleep.
always a reason (1.7k) - we love jon taking care of martin!! as he deserves!
pl: nuclei; but you only need one, anyway. (1.1k) - s3 phone calls with jon asking martin for research help. timezones. jon trying to stretch those “i care about you” muscles
1. can’t be helped (5.3k) 2. rituals (8.4k) - two fics in a series. very monster boyfriend. the first is martin losing his emotions to the lonely. the second is martin getting them back, but jon has been subsumed by The Archivist, which is figuring out what martin means to it. there was a moment in the second that made me go a little whoa hey! it was the archivist compelling martin. but it wasn’t anywhere near enough to make me stop reading. they were good, heartrending reads.
misshapes, mistakes, monsters (7.9k) - jon takes martin as his plus one to an oxford reunion. an enjoyable read, along with an almost cartoonishly villainous posh man. pining! “it’s nice to feel like i’m something worth protecting” arrrghhhh
small things, simple acts (6.6k) - post-159 fic. bookmarked this one! because they LOVE each other and TRY SO HARD for each other!!!! jon buys martin a stuffed cow because he saw martin looking at it and theyre TRYING for it. “There are a lot of things that Jon can’t give him, like safety or a normal life. But he can absolutely get him a stuffed toy just because he looks like he wants it.”
i’m almost me again, you’re almost you (12.9k) - you know when you try to feel feelings and it’s like touching a hot stove? that’s what martin does this whole fic as he’s recovering from the lonely and jon is being so achingly sweet and good with him, but martin can’t 1. deal with it just yet 2. believe that jon loves him back. post-159 fic. god. READING it felt like touching a hot stove, or stepping into warm bathwater with cold feet. jesus christ. excellent
fate, or something (107.8k) - this is that 100k blind date s1 canon divergence au, and i tried it out and i LOVED IT. martin has a spine! it’s just so sweet. they’re friends! martin works with melanie for ghost hunt uk! a great read. it’s that sloooowwww burn shit.
forever is composed of nows (5.9k) - jon meets martin (a single dad) and martin’s daughter (agnes! who had good writing for a child in a fanfiction) in the library and things grow from there. this fic is SO CUTE. it’s wonderful. i literally had to take breaks while reading it to make wild animal noises because i couldn’t deal with it. god. it’s so good. UGH (thanks to @infernallegaycy for the rec!)
and i won’t pray for an unfilled grave (5.9k) - daisy after coming out of the buried. daisira and daisy&melanie bonding. WOMENNNNN I LOVE WOMEN
*
hello my old heart (15.8k) - jess @thedistortion, the person who got me into tma and a dear pal, wrote this, and their brain is utterly huge and good. i love this so much. a deeply excellent post-159 fic that i would also say is pre-160. so many parts of this make me gasp and clutch my chest! but it also has an excellent realism to it. spiders that enrage me. please read.
yesterday is here (26.6k+, WIP) - post-canon jon and martin travel back in time and hang out with the pre-canon crew and attempt to make everything better. guaranteed happy ending. it’s so sweet watching jon be so kind and gentle and Better At People with his coworkers and make things right - and the s1 jon and martin fumble at seeing their extremely married and Knowing counterparts.
a measure outside the lines (22.9k) - i looove post-159 fics that show that martin hasn’t been completely severed from the lonely and still really struggles with it. this one is EXCELLENT at it. there’s some moments in this one that just made me totally ache because oh… oh martin. it’s so wonderful and has such excellent emotional catharsis
*
interlude (7.8k) - s3 au where georgie meets martin over facetime with jon! makes me wistful for the friendship they could have had without all the coping mechanisms in the way. the fond teasing is very cute. the pining! the banter! the slips of the tongue! very, very enjoyable.
skin deep (3.1k) - another s3 au where georgie meets martin on better terms - she calls him for help after jon’s meeting with jude (as jon’s locked himself in his room). the way jon leans on martin and lets him in and just… the way he behaves around him. very sweet.
bury my heart on the coals (3.6k+, WIP) - au where martin was one of gertrude’s assistants who is now a ghost haunting the archives. i’m enjoying how he’s so judgmental of jon and all the little signs of Haunting that jon and the assistants are experiencing.
nor any more youth or age than there is now (6.5k) - outsider pov of jon being a primary school teacher in scotland post 159!! so, so sweet. i LOVE outsider pov stories and this one is so good. jon using his powers to protect his students and displaying all that character growth he’s had… the glimpses of his domestic life with martin… it’s adorable. please check it out.
take sides in divided cells (3.4k) - in an idyllic domestic post-canon, martin’s father tries to reconnect with him. from jon’s pov, so it’s a lot of him worrying about martin and then being protective. oof! oof! emotional hurt/comfort.
pieces of you stuck on me (1.9k) - spy au. a little snapshot - i enjoy all the implied backstory going on. the thrill! the longing! the suspense! and i’m generally a sucker for spy aus, i’ll be real.
be kind, i beg you (14.9k) - post 159. oh this one is so achey… i love it. jon obsessing over “loved is past tense” and trying so hard to be Good to martin, while martin deals with mood swings from his recent emotional traumas. they try really hard and are very domestic, talk about gardening, and clean up the safehouse. LOVED THIS.

wtf, voltron
for the first time, i am glad that they ended up splitting this season so that s3 can remain a season of joy and happiness without the taint of s4 hanging over it.
not a fan of so, so many choices within these six episodes.
like i like that Shiro is back in the black lion, but both of my lion/paladin otps (keith/red and lance/blue) are still out of sorts
and they didn’t do anything to explain black’s distrust of him last season after having literally only had Keith as a paladin for a week. like the showrunners have said that black picked keith because she knew what shiro saw in him. so shiro was still the key there??? and what was the point of having her shut shiro out just to backtrack so quickly??? it still doesn’t make sense, and yea the clone thing might definitely be a thing. but they did not touch on that at ALL, so it seems like that was a waste of time.
if keith running off with the blade of marmora was their half-assed way to keep shiro and keith apart so he could ~grow~ as a leader, or whatever the point of their conflict was supposed to be, then he should have gotten some kind of plot with the blades and not just disappeared for several episodes. i wouldn’t have minded keith being with the blade if they had 1) used it as a chance to give us some backstory and fucking introspection on his mother and 2) resolved it so that it’s not still a giant dangling plot thread we have to deal with at least through this hiatus, if not also into next season.
i don’t like lotor and i don’t trust him in the slightest. i seriously object to him joining the coalition and being the “new defender.”
it doesn’t feel like we got any payoff to the plot points in s3. it just introduced a whole bunch of new shit, which is super frustrating.
honestly the galra plots as a whole were super confusing and i’m still not sure what’s happening. lotor knows honerva was his mom but not that haggar is honerva. zarkon seems to know lotor but not his wife?? why is lotor suddenly taking over the role of “object of zarkon’s hyperfixation” when it has literally been voltron for 10,000 years? i can’t believe he thinks lotor is that much of a threat, trans-reality comet or not.
i realize the filler space mall/bug-head coran episode was planned when the season was intended to be longer, but it really felt so jarring to have such an obvious fourth-wall breaking filler in such a short season. especially since the show isn’t halfway over yet. side note, though. i wonder if the crazy bughead coran voice was the one they got jeremy to do. because it did not sounds like Rhys at alllllll.
on the bright side, allura and lance both had some great moments this season. both got quality lolz -- like the kaltenecker scene, and moving stuff -- like the pep talk at the end. very sweet, even if it would have been nicer for allura to come to the realization of her power/ability on her own, without needing someone else to tell her.
also loved allura’s broadcast to the coalition members. it’s always nice when the show remembers that she’s the goddamn princess.
and really, i’m gonna need keith back with his team asap, but maybe now people will at least stop bitching about him taking over the show.
i’m sure i have more shit i didn’t like, but it’s almost 5am here and I can’t think anymore. not like anyone but waltzy is gonna read this anyway.
i do hope the klance fandom comes through with some good fixit fic for this hot mess of a season, despite the utter lack of any interaction between them.
#.i have no voltron followers on this blog so i'm gonna be obnoxious and put it this in the main tag. sorryyyyy.#voltron#vld#vld text#vld spoilers#dax liveblogs tv#s4 criticism

the well rescue
If you’re anything like me, you NEEDED to see Sherlock rescue John from the well. The story needed their desperate connection in the water. So I wrote this, and before I knew it, a multichapter, patchwork fixit-fic was born.
It’s my first. I’m terrified. And obsessed.
This crazyquilt diverts from the show during s3 and deals very little with s4. I liberally take parts I like, scrap bits I don’t, and make up much in between.
Note of caution, there is suspense and fear of drowning, but nothing violent in this chapter.

John startles awake with a gasp. He’s wet and cold. He peers into the dark.
He realizes he’s on his side in a pool of water. His hands fly out to push himself up, sliding across algae-slick stone. An instinctive revulsion surges him upward only to stumble and pitch forward into the shallow pool again. Something is tugging at his leg, holding him back, and for a brief moment every horror movie fear skitters through his mind.
Spluttering, he twists around, fingers groping along his leg beneath the dark water to find a tight metal cuff around his ankle sealed with a heavy padlock. His anger furrows his forehead as his fingers trace a meter of rusty chain until it ends in a steel plate bolted to the floor. Questions fly across his eyes.
Standing more carefully this time, he rubs his hands onto his sodden jacket, eyes adjusting to the gloom. He takes in the rough fieldstone walls that curve around him, mossy and slick with moisture, eyes tracing the room’s small circumference and following the walls up, up.
“Christ,” he whispers to himself, craning his head to peer into the darkness. “It’s a damn well.” As he takes a step toward the wall, the water sloshes around his calves. The water has gotten deeper since he woke.
“Sherlock? Sherlock!”
His shouts bounce around the stone walls. He pauses to strain his hearing into the darkness. How loud does his voice need to be to carry? Still craning to hear an answer from above, his hands fly to his coat pocket for his mobile.
“Not like you get much bloody reception inside the bloody earth,” he hisses as he thumbs at the buttons, then glares at the device. It’s been submerged in the water for as long as he was out cold. It’s completely dead. Shoving it back into his pocket, a sudden bone-deep shiver passes through him, a feeling of suffocating oppression. “Buried alive, eh?” He turns the fear into more yelling.
John’s not really surprised when after several minutes of shouting he doesn’t hear any answer. The water has risen almost to his knees.
“Who are you!” he screams toward the opening. “Get me out of here you sick, sodding bastard!” His thoughts race, but it’s all coming back in disconnected shards of memory that make no sense. Sherlock holding a baby… Mrs. Hudson in a…sports car? A mad genius sister running them through horrific trials…
So that’s it. He’s been drugged, he reasons, on one of the... mad sister’s whims. Eris...Eros? What was her name and why is it slipping away from him like this? Might be part of the drugging. He scrubs his face wishing he could sort fact from dream. Someone’s clearly dumped him here to terrify Sherlock into a frenzy of deduction. And he can’t do a thing to help him.
Tight-lipped, he channels his frustration toward the chain, kicking his leg hard, testing the strength of the rusty metal. He bites back a grunt as the length painfully chokes his kick mid-swing. He kicks again, then again, splashing water violently, hoping to loosen the bolts. “Going to have a beauty of a bruise tomorrow,” he growls.
The water has risen while he fought against the chain. Panting, he crouches into the water, orders himself to breathe slowly, and slides his fingers blindly along the links, cuff and bolts, feeling for any weakness. The metal is solid. He huffs, shaking his head.
“Honestly, Sherlock, who puts a bloody chain at the bottom of a well? It’s like a bad movie,” he muses in a hoarse whisper, though it echoes around him unnervingly. “Rusty enough to have been here awhile. This your sister’s idea of being welcomed into the family?” He’s dimly aware that he’s speaking to Sherlock, a habit he began after his Fall. It steadies him. “Guess we won’t invite her round for Christmas.” A dry, mirthless laugh. The well bounces the sound back to him. It’s a little bit like laughing with someone else.
As if Sherlock had just mentioned it, an idea occurs to him. “Good thinking, that.” He crouches, plunging his hands into the water to search the bottom of the well, the slick of algae making him shudder. In this position, the water reaches his throat and he strains to keep his face above it. He begins to move his hands in slow, concentric circles along the floor, outward from his feet and as far as the chain will let him. He can’t reach the walls unless he dunks. The thought is troubling. He's already chilled and completely submerging will drop his body temperature further.
The pads of his fingers grope for anything he could use to loosen the links, the bolts, maybe even a carelessly dropped key depending on the game Sherlock’s sister is playing with them.
A surprised little, “Oh” bursts from him as his hand bumps into something on its slow path across the ground, releasing a bubble of hope. “Well then, what’s this–” The bubble pops as he closes his fingers, thick and clumsy from the cold water, around his find. It’s thin, and even with the coating of algae, sickeningly familiar.
Pulling it close to his face to inspect it in the gloom, his eyes confirm what his hands knew – a bone, a femur, small enough to be a child’s, and it’s been here for ages. His hands dive back into the murky water searching along the floor until he comes across three more bones, then five, ribs and legs, a clavicle, and then the smooth dome of a small cranium. Pulling it from the water, he stares at the slick little skull in his shaking hands, then lunges to his feet, staggering in the rising water.
“Sherlock! Get me out of here!” His voice pitches high, cracks as the skull drops from his fingers into the water which is now just below his waist, the cold of it biting into his legs and wracking his body with shivers. He wraps his arms around himself and paces in the small circle the chain allows. The lunatic may have more than short-term suffering in mind for him.
“Think, damn you, just sod it and think. The water is rising, so it must be coming from somewhere in the floor.” He can only walk two paces from where he’s chained and can’t reach the walls, but decides that since he didn’t find a fill pipe during his search of the floor or notice it when the water was shallow, there must be one low to the ground and close to the wall. He considers this. In order to stretch his arms that far, he’s going to need to go under. He steels himself.
"If I don’t do it now, it’ll soon be over my head anyway.” He pulls in a sharp breath, squeezes his eyes shut, and plunges under the surface.
Even with his heavy, sodden clothes, he’s too buoyant and it’s hard to keep himself parallel to the floor to reach the wall. With some twisting and bobbing, he finds he can touch the sides. John makes a circuitous search of the wall in total blackness, the dull thud of water in his ears, his heartbeat drumming in his head. After searching about half the well, his burning lungs send him up for a breath. Down again.
Bubbles gush from his mouth as his fingers suddenly bump into a short pipe that’s indeed set into the wall just above the floor. He can feel the force of the water surging out of it. Pushing back to the surface, he feels a small triumph: it’s narrow enough to block. The water is up to his ribs.
Reluctantly, he pulls off his jacket and jumper, cold fingers fumbling at the shirt buttons, then pushes the jacket and shirt under the water to hold between his knees. John struggles back into his sodden jumper, the cold wet wool making his skin crawl, but his mum’s voice comes to him across the years from some camping trip. Wet wool keeps in warmth, but wet cotton will kill you. Likely his mum wasn’t imagining her son chained to the bottom of a steadily filling well, but perhaps he can stave off hypothermia a few minutes longer with the wool against his skin. Sherlock would know, has probably written a thesis on the insulating properties of over 200 forms of animal and plant fibers. The thought squeezes his heart and he glances up at the opening of the well, but finds it unchanged.
He dives back under the water and after some frantic groping, finds the pipe again. With only his sense of touch, he jams the balled-up shirt against the strong flow of water and pushes it into the opening with his stiff fingers, staunching it briefly, but the force of the flow pushes it back out into his hands. With a silent curse, he surfaces for breath.
The water is creeping up his chest. John is certain that in less than ten minutes it will be above his head. A horrible thought occurs to him: the water would have been over the child’s head by now. He swallows very hard, suddenly overwhelmed with grief for this small person who never should have endured such torment. At the same time, Sherlock’s grim, detached voice in his mind directs him to the obvious solution. John’s heart sinks. He takes several ragged breaths before he can submerge again.
On his next dive, he finds the femur, the thin ulna, a rib, and uses the bones to wedge the shirt deeper into the pipe, then his jacket, jamming in more bones to hold them in place. Surfacing for a fast breath, he returns to the pipe, relief surging through him to find the dam still in place, the flow nearly stopped. He pops to the surface like a cork and gives an exultant whoop. The water is nearly at his shoulders. To get the blood moving in his cold limbs, he treads as much as the chain will allow. After a few minutes, he feels certain that the water level has not perceptibly changed.
Half treading, half bouncing, he yells himself hoarse calling to Sherlock, Mycroft, Lestrade, Harry, Moriarty, anyone. He’s met with the echoes of his voice ricocheting around the walls of the well. John cranes his neck up, tries to see into the darkness. He gasps as he sees a light – he yells out thinking it’s a flashlight – but the light is fixed, only the thin point of a crescent moon rising high enough in the night sky to be glimpsed from down in the well. He slaps the surface of the water with frustration.
As the minutes grow long, he begins to feel panicky with nothing concrete to do, and dives down to check his dam. The force of the water has dislodged it and he keeps himself occupied trying to reinforce it with his grisly materials in the freezing darkness. But even with his treading, the cold of the water has sunk into his muscles and moving is becoming difficult, exhaustion pulling at him. Enough water seeps through his dam that by the time the moon has risen fully into sight, bone white, the water is up to his chin.
“Bloody hell," his whispers. "Sherlock, where are you?” . . .
The dam holds, but enough seeps through that by the time the moon is beginning to disappear behind the opposite edge of the well, the water is at his chin when he treads, over his head when he stands. The heavy chain tugs him down and his limbs feel leaden. Rest, says the practical voice in his head, which sounds like Sherlock but uses his own medical knowledge. Get your breath back. John obeys, let’s himself sink, pushes at the floor, breaks the surface, sucks in air, submerges.
Inner Sherlock lists out the symptoms of hypothermia he should be watching for. He’s still shivering violently, which is good, but the exhaustion and clumsiness are bad. He doesn’t have Sherlock’s powers of deduction to know the temperature of the water, or gauge how long he’s been in it by how quickly it’s risen or how much the moon has moved. Realizing his thoughts are getting fuzzy, he doubles up his treading efforts, thinking forcibly of people he should be trying to stay alive for.
Mary, certainly. But he frowns. He’s pictured her in her wedding dress, but the image blurs and she’s decked out in tight black leather like a villain from a Bond movie brandishing a gun. With the strange image comes a surge of fierce anger he cannot identify. He shakes his head, bewildered. Thinking of Mary makes him realize—
The baby. That tiny bundle of cells nestled in its mother’s womb, a ribbon of existence unspooling from its incredible potential, yet so small, utterly out of his reach. He craves that potential desperately. Sherlock’s practical voice in his head is incredulous at how much he can grieve the idea of a child, telling him bluntly it’s his human defect, and again he feels a wave of rage. John roars as his head breaks the surface, kicking vainly against the chain.
Sherlock. Infuriating, precious. The memory of him flies up unbidden: pale, unconscious and intubated in the hospital, bandages on his chest. John afraid to touch him, talking to him, head bowed, confessing everything when he knew Sherlock couldn’t even hear him.
The wave of sorrow that hits John threatens to suck all the breath from his lungs. Coward. A yell bubbles out of him as he submerges again, sputters to the surface. The ache inside him is raw and horrible as John imagines leaving him behind, leaving him just a grave to talk to. Idiots. They shouldn’t have to learn this again. All the things John knows he should have said ages ago, that he was too afraid of, then too resentful to give. It burns in his chest. They’ve lost years.
No, he thinks, as he submerges, bobs, treads, gasps, submerges. It’s better this way, better to die his friend than to leave him with the burden of his love. You’re still an idiot, Sherlock’s voice tells him reasonably. I’ll be shattered either way. The definition of the relationship makes no difference. John’s rage simmers into a dull misery as he reflexively bobs, treads, gasps, submerges, bobs. He's right, of course.
Minutes pass. The shivering is beginning to subside. Bit not good, says his inner Sherlock. John’s face is tipped up to gasp at his last inch of air, his ears full of the dark rubbery sounds of water, but as he slides below again he thinks he sees movement in the gloom above. He struggles to kick back up when something heavy splashes next to him.
Hands grip him, lifting his head above the surface. Warm arms wrap around his back, squeezing him fiercely. John sucks in breath raggedly, blinking water out of his eyes. But even if he were blind he'd know. Though drenched in the foul water, the scent of Sherlock is strong as John lets his head drop onto his friend’s shoulder. He lets out a huff that's almost a laugh and mostly a sob. Sherlock, whose feet can touch the bottom, is panting as if he’d run a long distance to the well before clambering down. The rumble of his deep voice is muffled, vibrating against John’s chest.
John realizes Sherlock is shaking him gently, calling his name firmly –
“–got to stay with me, John. John? Tell me you can hear me–” and it grips his heart how calmly Sherlock is trying to speak, the quiver in it betraying him.
“Hear you,” John mumbles weakly against his shoulder, and rallies his hands to briefly squeeze Sherlock’s back.
“Good. Excellent, John, now listen. There’s a rope, we can climb out.” John groans against Sherlock’s collarbone.
“Sorry, so sorry, can’t, stuck. Tried to get free,” His taller friend’s head is above the water line and he snaps to attention. Sherlock grips him tightly against his chest and pulls up, hitting the resistance of the chain. Deductions race across his eyes.
“There is something holding you down–”
“Chain, on my right foot,” he mumbles apologetically. “Padlock. Little kid’s bones.” He wants to be helpful, to speed up his escape, but he can tell the last detail startles Sherlock.
“John, the rope isn't long enough for you to reach from your position. Take a deep breath. I have to let go of you while I dive down. Good, there, take another, and one more. I’ll be right back to hold you up. Okay, ready, here we go.”
Sherlock lets go of him and John slips below the water, arms flailing out to bob himself higher, but the weight of the chain pulls him below the surface. He feels Sherlock perform a tidy surface dive, feels hands at his ankles, tugging the chain, assessing in the darkness. He tries to be patient, but soon John’s lungs are burning and the panic gives him a burst of adrenaline. His hands grope through the water for Sherlock, find a leg, tug.
With a swirl of wake Sherlock is back, pulling John above the surface, pulling him close against his chest to rest his chin on his shoulder again and let him float and breathe, giving him warmth. Despite his dire circumstances, John is vividly aware of how tightly they are twined together, though surely it’s just to keep him warm.
“John I don’t want to alarm you, but I believe the water level has risen since I arrived in the well.” John practically barks out a laugh into his shoulder.
“Nice of you to notice. Been some trouble, that. I blocked the pipe. Slowed it down.”
“You did? How?” John mutters his solution and is surprised when Sherlock gives him a quick, fierce squeeze.
“Brilliant, John.” Despite the freezing water, he feels warmth spread through his chest at the unexpected praise. “But you’re not shivering enough for this temperature. You've been exposed too long and are likely going into shock judging by your exhaustion and mumbled speech. We need to get you out and warm as quickly as possible. We must unlock this chain now.”
“No key, looked,” John murmurs against his shoulder. Now that he has something to rest on, the weariness has flooded him and he lets his eyes slide closed. “Don’t s’pose you brought your lock pick.” He is surprised to feel Sherlock’s chuckle deep in his chest, rumbling against his own.
“Of course I did.” Relief washes over John at this incredible information, stirring his mind into wakefulness. “But it’s been a while since I’ve picked a lock in the dark, underwater, upside down.”
John reluctantly pushes away from his warmth. “Go fast, I’m okay for a bit, I think.”
Sherlock locks eyes with him. They both pull in huge lung-fulls of air, and at Sherlock’s nod they drop beneath the water.
Knowing he needs to stay still for Sherlock to pick the lock, John makes himself drift limply. He pushes back the doubts creeping in, mentally urging Sherlock on as if the thoughts could travel to him through the water. You found me in time. You’re brilliant. Get us out of here, I want to go home.
Suspended in the darkness, John can feel Sherlock’s hands and limbs brushing around him like a murky sea creature, the minute tugs and pulls at the lock. In his delirious state he imagines being rescued not from above by rope, but from below, Sherlock swimming up to him like some, beautiful landlocked selky.
John hears a clik through the water and knows he’s done it. The strain on his leg evaporates and he suddenly buoys up higher in the water. As his head breaks the surface, he greedily sucks in air, weakly treading water with two free legs, but not for long. Sherlock splashes to the surface next to him, gasping, and pulls John against him with a fierceness that surprises John. They breathe together like this for several heartbeats. Sherlock's dark curls are limp and dripping over John's face. Even on tiptoe now, Sherlock’s chin is just out of the water.
“Thank you,” John pants quietly against his shoulder. Then, because he might explode from the fierce emotion, “What took you so bloody long to get here?”
“Couldn’t find you,” Sherlock rumbles against his ear. John can feel his big hands clench on his back. His voice is muffled and strained, “I’m sorry, I’m so sorry it took me so long, John. Please forgive me.” Sherlock sucks in a few long, shuddering breaths, but then a wave of shivering hits them both. “Let’s get out of here.”
John gives a small groan of exhaustion as, relief waning, he skeptically eyes the slender rope Sherlock used to descend into the well.
“Not sure I can climb.” He can hardly curl his stiff hands into fists and his legs feel like field stones. “We could unjam the pipe and float til the water level lifts us higher, but we’d probably die of hypothermia well before then. Be a real waste of a lovely bit of underwater lock-picking. Your nutter of a sister must be having a grand time watching you dance."
Sherlock eyes him oddly as he rambles. “John, what are you…” but he shakes his head, mouth tight with concern as he side-swims John over to the wall and puts the rope in his hands. John realizes that not even Sherlock can easily touch the bottom now. The reality of his timing with the lock makes John shudder. His teeth begin to chatter again and he’s shaking. Sherlock pulls away from him and reaches up for the rope. John immediately misses his warmth.
“John, I’m going to climb out and make something to carry you out with. I won’t be long.”
Even though he sees the logic, the very idea of being left in the well alone again horrifies him, but he just bites his lip and nods, aware that Sherlock is only inches away watching him very closely. He puts a hand around John’s.
“Just hang onto the rope, John. Keep breathing.” Sherlock stops abruptly, eyeing him critically, and seems to come to a quick conclusion. Holding onto the rope, he uses his free hand to rapidly unbutton his own sodden shirt. John squints at him with confusion, feeling his face warm.
“What are you–” but Sherlock’s already pulled off and threaded his shirt under John’s arms and around his back, knotting the sleeves tightly to the rope. John feels tenderly bemused as understanding dawns on him. Should he lose consciousness, his head won’t slip underwater. Sherlock tugs on the knots.
“John, should I be…delayed and the water rise, you can push these knots up the rope. Show me your hands aren’t too cold for this.” Though his hands are clumsy, John obediently nudges the knots upward. Sherlock nods approval. He then gently pulls Johns hands from the rope to cross his arms over his chest. “Let my shirt hold your weight. Keep your arms tight to your body, it will prevent loss of heat.” He looks right into John’s face, his words like steel. “I’m coming back for you.”
John can’t trust his voice so he just nods curtly. Sherlock flashes him a sudden, unexpected smile and pulls himself up the rope in a strong, lithe movement, water sluicing off of him. Like a selky, John thinks, then frowns. One who suddenly knows first-responder hypothermia measures. Was the knowledge squirreled away in some closet of his mind palace all this time?
Water drips off of Sherlock as he climbs, pattering onto John below. He watches him scale the distance with surprising steadiness and speed, oddly touched at the sight of his long bare feet gripping the rope. He can picture him haring across the moor toward the well, fresh on a lead from some damned riddle that showed him the way. He imagines him finding it, throwing off his Belstaff and suit coat, kicking off his shoes, throwing down the rope...
John's brow knits as his foggy mind tells him that Sherlock has been in no condition to run across moors or scale ropes. But he can't for the life of him remember why.
High above, Sherlock briefly blocks out the crescent moon as he pulls himself over the edge and disappears from view.
