David Allyon
As a lover of the drag community I had been looking at cool high fashion pictures to print for my room. That’s when I found David Allyon and his series of photos of my favorite drag queens like Trixie Mattel and Bob the drag queen. Allyon is a graphic designer and illustrator with beautiful portraits of what many consider to be the superheroes of the LGBTQIA+ community. He knows how to make his subjects look effortlessly ethereal and invoke the spirit of David LaChapelle in the way that each photo is eye popping and overly saturated.
The image that most caught my eye was Allyon’s portrait of Trixie Mattel laying down in a pile of toys dressed up as if she was a life size barbie doll. The subject and lighting of the photo gave it a dynamic feeling and story. Everything was able to blend together nicely to tell a concise and interesting story of a doll in her most natural element.

inktober but it’s about writing and no ink at all
Yo, this year I decided to take part on the inktober to practice some writing. I made my own list because no list I found really sparkled my interest. All will be posted here and I will be writing in English to practice more. Also I plan to write all days about Death Note.
Which means that I will be working in English for a fandom I haven’t written about since 2010. And I probably don’t remember as much about it as I would like. But hey, probably by the end of the month I will actually write interesting things!
Anyway, here we go.
Day One - Consistência/Consistency
(It’s supposed to be a Near/Mello/Matt (nearlymellodramattic) thing about a headcanon I saw somewhere about them sharing a detective alias.)
consistency noun (BEING THE SAME) the quality of always behaving or performing in a similar way, or of always happening in a similar way.
Agent Jillian sometimes wondered about the police’s favourite crime consultant. She knew that she probably shouldn’t think too hard about it, but after working with that detective for about five years, it was a bit inevitable.
Zelda Sprüngli was the detective’s name - or at least the one they knew her for. No one had ever seen the woman in person or in photos and all contact with her was usually done by email.
Even though Zelda wasn’t officially in the World’s Best Detectives list, she was known for aiding the police and secret agencies when the cases got too obscure. She had a way of bringing out some light to the investigations and finding new clues the others had overlooked.
But, what made the agent think so much about her was how she was… Inconstant.
At times, she wondered if Zelda was some kind of alias for a group of people, instead of one.
Jillian could begin by pointing out the writing style. Sometimes Zelda responded with detailed and long paragraphs about the case and what she found out; Other times, the answers were short and always seemed like she was impatient with everyone’s lack of knowledge; And there was even times where her answers were full of abbreviations and internet slang.
No one seemed to get curious about it. Once, she tried to bring out the subject just to get a warning look from her superior. Everyone there seemed scared to even say anything about Zelda. Which seemed to have a reason behind - the detective had already contacted them sometimes out of blue, to talk about very specific things that only people in the agency should know. Jillian wasn’t there when it occurred, but her partner, Tom, had explained it all to her one day, in a careful and low tone. Whoever Zelda was, they had a bizarre sense of humour, to the point of terrifying agents with personal information, making everyone there doubt one another.
But, for Jillian, this was external doing. She was certain that Zelda had her ways of knowing things and liked to play tricks. Or at least, some in the Zelda group liked it. They probably had listening devices in the police. Sometimes Jillian even wondered if that Zelda could actually be a criminal, even though she was usually very helpful…
Deep down, though, Jillian sort of trusted her, whoever she really is. Sometimes she got a feeling Zelda might be a very young and bright person… She could imagine, a group of teens sharing a computer to investigate the cases. But that was a bit silly, right?

10 Industry Predictions for 2021
Tumblr media
One of my favorite things to do at the end of each year is make predictions for the upcoming year. Pulling out the ol’ crystal ball is fun, because you can go as nuts as you want, and no one will really call you on it, because, ya' know, predictions.
It’s OK to be wrong. No one gets hurt. Sort of like predicting the Cleveland Browns will win the Super Bowl every year. Hey, our time is coming, trust me.
The world of recruiting is forever fluid, which makes guessing the future that much more interesting. Hell, if nothing else, 2020 is finally over. So, here we go.
Airbnb launches Work. WeWork, the infamous coworking space provider was a shit-show, but timing had a lot to do with it. Thanks to the pandemic, there’s a lot of available commercial real estate that may never be leased traditionally again. Landlords are desperate and Airbnb has the cure. I suspect the popular platform for rentals will enable people to lease out work spaces like they do beachfront condos. Employers will dole out credits. Everyone wins.
Slack takes aim at Gmail & LinkedIn. Slack’s mission is to kill email. With Salesforce’s muscle, they now might be able to do it, while kicking LinkedIn where it hurts. I predict Slack will create profiles that people can use to connect and message with anyone, not just coworkers. Apps will make engagement fun and they should roll membership out similarly to how Google unveiled Gmail: Invitation only. The cool kids will eat it up and everyone else will follow.
Dice goes private. DHI needs a shakeup. CEO Art Zeile has done nothing for innovation - let alone the stock price - since taking over in 2018, and they’re getting their asses handed to them by nimbler startups in tech recruiting. Without the handcuffs of being a public company, Dice might finally be able to think outside the box and swing for the fences.
Google starts monetizing Google for Jobs. I don’t usually replay predictions from prior years, but this one’s too juicy not to happen. I know they have antitrust issues to worry about, but they’re leaving a billion dollars on the table by not plugging in their pay-per-click engine into job search. And while I’m on the topic of search, look for Apple to start tiptoeing into the search game next year. Again, too much money to sit on the sidelines.
Seek acquires Vervoe and TalkPush. The Aussie job board needs to innovate if it’s going to compete in the coming decade. A recent investment in video interviewing solution Vervoe, also in Australia, and their partnership with messaging platform TalkPush, headquartered sort of everywhere, hint to a pending polygamous marriage in 2021.
Chatbot feeding frenzy commences. Conversational A.I. ... Chatbots. Whatever you call them, there’s going to be a buying spree on names like Mya, XOR, Olivia and others. AllyO was just the beginning. As the world gets back to work in 2021, employers who laid off recruiters during the pandemic will look to technology instead of headcount, which plays right into automated chat. Acquiring such growth potential will be too hard to pass-up. Look for price tags over $100 million.
Blind gets acquired. Employee reviews still have a ton of value and Glassdoor, along with Indeed hold the lion’s share of the market, but they’re putting younger professionals to sleep. Blind quietly added reviews last year and is quickly gaining momentum. Someone will get this one while it’s still affordable.
Bye-bye Irina. If there was a job site that became a metaphor for 2020, it was CareerBuilder. An alleged ransomware attack in the fall was rock bottom. And the fish-out-of-water CEO Irina Novoselsky must be hanging on by a thread at this point. An abysmal Glassdoor CEO rating of 35 percent means she will go buh-bye if anyone at Apollo finds a backbone.
Monster goes all-in on virtual job fairs. Never let a good crisis go to waste. The pandemic has given this once mighty job board an opportunity if it just grabs it. Face-to-face job fairs are dead. Like, Julius Caesar dead. But germ-free virtual events will thrive in a post-COVID world, and it’s just waiting for a brand name to dive in. Monster’s been dabbling in video for years now, so there’s some competency there. Now’s the time to build a product that’s best-in-class and ride the wave of hiring that’s bound to happen as the world opens back up.
Facebook goes gig. Ignore Facebook’s impact on the employment space all you want, but they still shows signs of giving a damn about classifieds, which draws a ton of traffic for the world’s biggest social network. Think they’re not looking at Uber, Upwork and DoorDash and thinking, “We should get us a piece of that”? C’mon, man!
That’s it. That’s the list.
History says almost none will come true, but it sure was fun putting together. One last prediction as I pour myself a glass of champagne to ring in 2021: No one is going to miss 2020.
Cheers!

AI Weekly: Coronavirus spurs adoption of AI-powered candidate recruitment and screening tools
As COVID-19 continues to spread — as of the time of writing (March 12), there were over 139,600 confirmed cases and over 5,100 deaths — companies are increasingly adopting alternatives to in-person job interviews and talent recruitment. Recruiters PageGroup and Robert Walters have announced plans to move some job interviews and interactions online, following on the heels of tech giants Amazon, Facebook, Google, and Intel.
At least a few have begun piloting AI recruitment and candidate screening tools that promise to help recruiters become more efficient in identifying job candidates, cut down on recruitment costs, and boost overall candidate satisfaction. That’s in spite of fears that these tools might exhibit biases against certain groups of candidates.
CEO Sam Zheng, the CEO of Curious Thing, which uses a voice-based AI to invite applicants to interviews and deliver analytics and shortlisting suggestions, says he’s seen a measurable uptick in business since early February. He attributes it to realizations on the part of organizations that AI tools have unique advantages to offer.
“Moving toward a remote-friendly workforce is one key trend of the future of work,” Zheng told VentureBeat via email. “Being able to interview [and] screen candidates at scale remotely is an important component of it. I think the current [COVID-19] situation may have accelerated this trend by 2-3 years — the trend of ‘hiring remotely and working remotely’ … will become the new norm, especially for high volume roles.”
Sanjoe Jose, the CEO of Talview, agrees with that sentiment. His startup provides an AI-powered recruitment platform that supports video interviews, online assessments, and insight-capturing chatbots.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
“[We] are seeing a significant increase in inquiries … and a significant increase in usage from existing customers as people who were [conducting] 30-40% of hiring virtually are now moving almost everything online,” Jose said. “While moving remote was the immediate response, customers are also keen to explore how to be more efficient, as many are running short of people or struggling to cope up with the change … In the past, specific events within companies that made them use Talview has resulted in those customers continuing that way even after the specific need was met because they realized the benefits.”
What are the benefits of such tools, tangibly speaking? According to a 2018 survey conducted by Knockri, an AI video-based skills assessment startup, companies using its screening suite see up to a 62% reduction in costs and a 68% drop in time when filling positions. Job-matching platform Eightfold claims that across the millions of applications its AI has processed, recruiters have observed a 200% increase in quality candidates. And AllyO, whose tools tap conversational AI to quickly identify qualified job seekers, says its customers have registered 91% increases in candidate satisfaction on average.
Julia Pollak, ZipRecruiter’s in-house labor economist, anticipates the adoption of AI recruitment and candidate screening tools will have a lasting impact on the labor market post-pandemic. After experiencing the benefits of these tools, she says, some employers will be loath to return to manual, costlier physical processes.
In a ZipRecruiter survey of 516 recruiters conducted in April 2019, 50% of respondents said AI had helped them streamline communication with candidates; 44% said it had helped them source a larger pool of candidates; and 41% said AI tools have made their jobs more interesting.
“People are rethinking whether in-person events and meetings are really necessary,” said Pollak. “For employers, with remote AI tools, they don’t have to spend money holding recruitment events and flying people out for what might be 30-minute interviews. On the job seeker side, studies have shown that people are less stressed when they can interview from home.”
In some sense, the spread of the coronavirus is merely accelerating the adoption of AI recruitment and candidate screening tools. Some 55% of U.S. human resources managers said AI would be a regular part of their work within the next five years, according to a 2017 survey by talent software firm CareerBuilder. And according to a Korn Ferry survey, 63% of talent acquisition professionals say AI has already changed the way recruiting is done at their company.
But while AI holds appeal for hiring managers tackling the challenges of remote recruiting, a body of research suggests that it’s an imperfect solution.
Amazon reportedly tried to build an algorithmic system to analyze and suggest the best hires, but it became biased against female applicants after training on 10 years of internal hiring data. The Electronic Privacy Information Center filed a complaint with the FTC pushing the agency to investigate HireVue, which offers an AI tool that analyzes the language and tone of a candidate’s voice and their expressions as they answer questions, for potential bias and inaccuracy. And nonprofit tech research group Upturn’s recent report on equity and hiring algorithms noted that “[de-biasing] best practices have yet to crystallize [and] [m]any techniques maintain a narrow focus on individual protected characteristics like gender or race, and rarely address intersectional concerns, where multiple protected traits produce compounding disparate effects.”
On the other hand, AI recruitment and candidate screening tools could actively reduce bias in hiring. Startup Blendoor is using algorithms to match over 100,000 candidates to jobs while making an effort to recruit people who are otherwise underrepresented. Pymetrics validates its candidate-matching AI with a test set to identify where genders, races, and other groups might be discriminated against. There’s also platforms like Plum and Headstart, which leverage data science to help companies reduce unconscious bias in the hiring process.
“The reality of automating candidate recruiting is that there will be need of human supervision for the next years to come — one of the main reasons for this is that companies frequently will contradict themselves on what’s important to them,” Fetcher cofounder and CEO Andres Blank told VentureBeat in an earlier interview. “[That said,] we believe we can leverage [AI] to address several forms of hiring bias to help companies build more diverse and inclusive organizations.”
Assuming that’s proven out, it’s another incentive for the recruiters piloting AI tools to stick with those tools long after the threat of the coronavirus has passed.
