Seed Savings - How to Save Money on an Organic Garden
How can we ensure that all our seeds in our organic gardens germinate and produce plants? Gardeners who are skilled in saving their seeds year after year, particularly rare heirloom varieties, are wise. Seed saving is a great way to save money. But old seed often disappoints.
It is always a good idea to pre-germinate an experiment sample if you are unsure about the quality of old seed. Ten seeds should be soaked overnight. After they have dried, place them on damp kitchen papers and wrap in plastic bags. After a few days, you can count how many seeds are showing signs or life. This scientific method requires at least 100 seeds. This could be all you have! As a rough guide, ten is sufficient.
The seed that germinates should not be thrown away. It should be buried in a small pot of compost with the tip visible. Then, add water and preferably a kelp solution. Any young seedling will benefit greatly from kelp.

You'll be able to tell if 20% of your soaked seeds are showing life. If you plant five seeds from each module, there's a good possibility that at least one will germinate.
If the seed fails to germinate after your seed test, it is either dead or ineffectively dormant. The rest of the seed can be eaten! You can use the remaining seed in granola, or to top your home-baked bread. It all depends on what type of seed you have. However, not allvegetable seeds are suitable or safe to eat. You should avoid commercially processed seed. John Seymour, the self-sufficiency legend, would often remind us to use common sense!
Seed viability will be the true test
For almost all edible temperate plants, the ideal temperature for germination is 75oF. 85oF is the ideal temperature for tomatoes, aubergines, squash, and other hot-climate plant species. They will still germinate at 75oF. We'll find out in eight days whether that particular batch of seed will yield eg. 75% or 15% germination. Or none.
When we sow it in bulk, we can adjust the seed quantities as shown. This advice is great, but it can be time-consuming.
Why? Parsnip seed stored for many years may germinate at 50% under ideal conditions of germination. Textbooks state that you can't germinate parsnip, lovage, or angelica seeds if they are more than one years old and have been kept at room temperature.
Seed is full of surprises. I was able to grow a large amount of parsnips and other umbellifers from seed that was five years old. It had been stored in my socks drawer.
Indoor seed germination can produce misleading results
The results of germinating umbellifers seeds indoors can be confusing. Parsnips are not tolerant of transplanting. They must be planted outdoors, in situ. How can we determine their potential performance outside without wasting too much seed?
Answer: Test the germination in sub optimal conditions. They will actually meet outdoors. Place your seed on damp kitchen tissue and keep it there for eight days. Or any other conditions that you find in your garden.
Your garage could be in spring. You will get an index to the truepercentage viability for any seedlings that emerge. Now you can sow the remaining seed outside with confidence. (Or not.)
Create your own heirloom vegetable variety!
Another benefit to testing seed in difficult conditions is that you can also test the seeds. You will be able to grow very strong plants if you germinate the seed in these conditions. Keep the seeds from them as they grow. If they are open-pollinated, (i.e. If they are open-pollinated (ie. not F1 or any other hybrids), you can keep the seed and continue to grow them, which could lead you to your own unique variety. One that has been adapted to your micro-climate.
