Personal Logo
Tumblr media
For semester B in professional practices, one of the main goals is to create a personal branding kit for ourselves and other stuff that'll be useful for when we are thrust into the industry looking for jobs. Before I actually started designing the logo, I first got a domain just to be certain of the name I would use for the branding. Initially, I wanted to go for a domain with the name AllStarProductions but there weren't any domains available with .com so I decided to change it to AllStarsProductions (just added an 's' after star) after I discovered there the domain allstarsproductions.com was available in Squarespace.
At first, the name of the brand was going to be AllStar'sProduction as I thought the 's would give a more personal feel to the logo. However, after consulting with the tutor, he suggested removing the 's and changing it to 'stars' instead.
Tumblr media
When designing the prototype for the logo, I already had an idea of what I wanted to make. I chose to design the logo with an image of glasses as I always wear them and thought it would be a good representation of my image as well. I also decided to add part of the logo's name in the lens as the name AllStars is derived from my name Allaster. For some context behind why I chose to name the brand Allstars instead of my own name, during some previous online game sessions some people would misspell my name as Allstar so I thought it would be a nice derivation of my name for when I start a brand. So that's where the origin of the brand's name came from. I took an image of glasses and traced it using the magnetic lasso tool and filled it in, however, it looked pretty bad as there were a lot of marks and lines that weren't smooth at all.
Tumblr media
For the redesign, I took an up-close photo of my glasses and used the object selection tool to get the shape of the glasses and also erase the parts I didn't want like the lens. Then I just filled the shape of the lens with the paint bucket tool.

METROPOLIS by Joe Brooks and Dusty Hughes Ye Olde Rose and Crown Walthamstow 10th October – 5th November 2017 ‘a superb show’ ★★★★ Following on from their great successes this year with My Land’s Shore and 110 In The Shade, All Star Productions have triumphed again with the futuristic musical Metropolis. Based on the 1927 film of the same name, Joe Brooks’ score (musically directed by Aaron Clingham), achieves the urgency of factory life, the hardship of the workers and the comparisons between two different worlds brilliantly. The opening number, 101.11, is powerful both musically and visually, with wonderful choreography (Ian Pyle) using strong motifs that appear throughout the show. This strong opening is a bit of a shock to the system in such a small venue, throwing the audience right in the middle of the action and trauma these people go through on a daily basis. In a factory full of slaves, there is of course a power abusing factory foreman, and he comes in the form of John Freeman, played by Gareth James. James has a strong, crisp voice and commands the stage effortlessly from the moment he arrives. He has a strong opening song, staged effectively under a single spotlight. The lighting throughout (by Vittorio Verta) is indeed very good, with many key moments highlighted beautifully. The ensemble are spectacular, and switch between the factory workers and ‘the elitists’ seamlessly. There are some extremely quick changes in this show, and it’s good to see the full costume and hair changes between the parts, rather than just a slight change of clothes or symbolic item. It’s attention to detail like that which really contributes toward the brilliant final effect of the show. The choreography by Pyle is again strong, with different motifs used in this instance and a joy to watch. Miiya Alexandra is in her professional acting role as the lead, Maria/Futura. With a beautiful, technically brilliant voice, Alexandra covers her whole range of songs excellently, and when she plays Futura – a robot – her physicality, right down to the blinking of her eyes, is spot on. Rob Herron plays opposite Alexandra as Steven, the son of foreman Freeman trying to create better conditions for the workers. Herron has an effortlessly powerful voice with a lovely rich quality. He is a strong performer with good stage presence, and the voice is a pleasure to listen to. Kitty Whitelaw and Alex Ely were both great in their respective parts of Doctor Warner and Jeremiah – assistant to John Freeman. Whitelaw has a lovely voice but perhaps just needs a little more confidence, although she played the morally conflicted part very well. Ely as Jeremiah had a strong evil streak to him and good command of the stage, his character holding his own next to Freeman. Mark Mackinnon plays Groat, the fortunate – or unfortunate – worker put in charge of all the others. Both him and Michael Levi as George, a worker thrown into a difficult position, act their individual emotionally driven sections wonderfully. The use of the cast operating puppets to play the children of the workers was nice, and generally effective. There were parts where the puppetry skills could be tightened up a little, and in places the puppeteers were upstaging the current action, but overall it was a good effect. A really strong win once again by All Star Productions; their show are always worth a watch and are full of talented casts. This production was no exception; strong harmonies, strong vocals, strong choreography. The only thing they need to do now is iron out some of the sound issues. It didn’t ruin the overall effect though. This was a superb show which they should all be proud of as every cast member, although too many to list here, stood out at different times for all the right reasons. MY LAND'S SHORE Music and Lyrics by Christopher J Orton Book and Lyrics by Robert Gould Presented by All Star Productions Ye Olde Rose and Crown Theatre 7 – 26 February Deserves a transfer to the West End ★★★★★ Director Brendan Matthew recalls in his programme notes that My Land’s Shore was described during its workshop stage as ‘The Welsh Les Mis.’ And that’s exactly what it is. The music and overall theme certainly have much likeness to Boublil and Schonberg’s work, with the rebellion and moral conflict of Les Miserables and the love and heartbreak of Miss Saigon. Yet My Land’s Shore stands alone as a powerful, passionate musical in its own right. Christopher J Orton and Robert Gould have created a show that speaks volumes and touches the heart, and the tear ducts, of the entire audience. One thing is for sure; it is far too big for its current venue at Ye Olde Rose and Crown and deserves a transfer as soon as possible. My Land’s Shore is based on the true story of the Merthyr Uprising of 1831. Matthew writes in his notes that ‘we sugar coat nothing…it has been a wonderful thing to experience the amount of pride and adoration that the Welsh have for their country.’ One member of the uprising Dic Penderyn, also known as Richard Lewis, was executed, (charged with wounding a highlander). This musical shows that despite the harsh penalties, it was the community that won at heart, by remaining strong and maintaining their dignity together amongst horrific events. The strong, relatively young cast of eighteen really do bring the passion and community feel to life throughout the entire show. The emotion is raw and the strength bursts out of each of them, filling the entire room. It would be too much to list what each performer brings, but they should all keep up the wonderful attack and continue to be proud of this show. Special mentions should be given to the main characters. Aidan Banyard plays Richard Lewis, and makes the audience sit up in their seats from his very first note. His voice has a magnificent resonance, and did not falter. The emotional journey that Banyard plays throughout was flawless, and he absolutely does the real Richard Lewis justice. Rebecca Gilliland as his new wife, Angharad, has an effortlessly beautiful voice, and she is a very strong actress. Gilliland has some emotionally difficult scenes which she portrays with faultless raw emotion. Michael Rees as Lewis Lewis and Kira Morsley are both strong performers also. Rees gives an avid performance but at times shut the audience out with a lot of upstage direction. This could be due to such deep immersion in the character and the story however, which was well executed. Morsley has a lovely tone to her voice and captures the feisty part of her character well. There are some lovely moments in the show: A beautiful trio performed by Gilliland, Morsley and Emma Hickey as Elizabeth; The unassuming calmness of Aled Powys Williams as Morgan; The innocence captured by Hollie Evans and Samuel Bailey; Great comedic relief by Lucy Elson, and powerful guilt ridden self-doubt shown by Taite-Elliot Drew as Jenkins – the main named antagonist in the show. As mentioned previously, this show has such a strong cast and creative team behind it and comes highly recommended. The set and lighting are well designed to make the most of the tricky space. The entrances and exits are in view, as is the band, which is noticeable but not distracting. With many of the cast hailing from Wales themselves, the pride of the Dragon and of the country really does shine through. The Merthyr Rising was to lead the way for many more revolts throughout Britain, and the anguish that people have experienced throughout history is shocking and yet is still relevant today. This world premiere of My Land’s Shore is certainly not one to be missed and worth following when it no doubt transfers to its rightful place in the West End – hopefully with the same cast.
