Dickey Betts: A Tribute to the Legendary Allman Brothers Band Guitarist
Introduction In the annals of rock music history, certain names resonate with an almost mythical quality. Dickey Betts, the co-founder and legendary guitarist of the Allman Brothers Band, is undeniably one of those luminaries. His soulful solos, heartfelt songwriting, and unbridled spirit left an indelible mark on the Southern rock genre. On April 18, 2024, the music world bid farewell to this…

The Allman Brothers Band - Eat a Peach (Warner Bros.-Capricorn, 1972) - Design by W. David Powell, gatefold art by Powell and J.F. Holmes
Powell based these off postcards he found in a Georgia drugstore. I wonder if the cards took inspiration from Roald Dahl's James and the Giant Peach; the climax has the titular peach on a truck when James is in New York.
The real prize is in the gatefold, which, uh, I'll let you figure out.

RIP Dickey Betts. I've probably said it before on here, but the Allman Brothers Band are my dad's favourite band (I've seen them with him a couple of times too), and Betts' guitar playing and songwriting are such a huge part of their 'classic' years (including my favourite record, Eat a Peach).

Song of the Day - “Melissa”
Gregg Allman wrote this beautiful song but just couldn’t get it to a place where he felt it was ready for The Allman Brothers to record it. When he was finally brave enough to play it for his brother, Duane loved it, and in fact said it was his absolute favorite song that Gregg had ever written. Duane begged Gregg to let the band record it, but Gregg just didn’t feel it.
On November 1st of 1971, Gregg found himself performing at Duane’s funeral.
Sitting beside his brother’s coffin, he told the bereaved that he felt he had let his brother down with this song, by not recording it, that it was Duane’s favorite, and then Gregg told them, he had sold the rights to the song, to a friend.
And then, Gregg performed “Melissa” for the very first time publicly. Not a dry eye in the house.
Manager Phil Waldman made it his mission to track down the friend Gregg had sold the rights to. He bought the rights back.
And the Allman Brothers recorded “Melissa” finally, only without Duane.
It appeared on their first post-Duane album, “Eat A Peach”, and went on to become one of the band’s most beloved songs.

Crossroads, seem to come and go, yeah The gypsy flies from coast to coast Knowing many, loving none Bearing sorrow, having fun But, back home he'll always run to sweet Melissa Mm-hmm
Freight train, each car looks the same, all the same And no one knows the gypsy's man And no one hears his lonely sighs There are no blankets where he lies Lord, in his deepest dreams the gypsy flies with sweet Melissa Mmm-hmm
Again, the morning's come Again, he's on the run A sunbeam's shining through his hair Fear not to have a care Well, pick up your gear and gypsy roll on, roll on
Crossroads, will you ever let him go, Lord, Lord? Or will you hide the dead man's ghost? Or will he lie, beneath the clay? Or will his spirit float away? But, I know that he won't stay without Melissa Yes, I know that he won't stay, without Melissa Lord, Lord, it's all the same Mmm-hmm
