The night Park Solidarity-Tek died, all his friends went to the ranch to find him.

They didn’t have any illusions that this would end well- they had all seen the messages over their parents shoulders, they had all heard the claps of thunder. They knew he was gone.

He had brutal claw marks over every inch of his body, and his red and blue sweater was shredded around him. It had not been a painless death.

PB took the lead, of course. She had Killer drag him outside, made Allix grab a shovel, made Justice find a plank of wood. And no one complained for once.

They dug him a grave in the middle of the courtyard around the house, and put up a sloppy sign. On it was written simply: PARK. BURN BRIGHT. WE’LL MISS YOU.

And that was all there was to say.

Allix Statz died the next day.

Grian- a man she never trusted- killed her entire family, the family all his secret letters swore he’d protect. PB dug that grave herself.

ALLIX. KEEP SMILLING. WE’LL MISS YOU.

And then, a week later, PB was gone.

It wasn’t hard to find him, he was sitting at Allix’ grave, like he’d been for the last seven days, hunched over, blood dripping from their ears and nose and mouth.

PB. SORRY WE DIDN’T HELP MORE. WE’LL MISS YOU.

That afternoon, while the children huddled together in the shadow of the burnt husk of the Relation, Killer started screaming, and tearing at his clothes. The last three watched in horror as his skin melted from it’s bones.

It didn’t get a grave, but it did get a sign.

KILLER. I HOPE THERES FLOWERS IN HEAVEN. WE’LL MISS YOU.

Imogene went fast, a cut to the back, and they were out.

Justice got a crushed windpipe and an ax to the forehead.

In the heat of combat, there was no one to dig a grave for either of them.

If they could their signs would probably say something like IMOGENE. ROCK ON. WE’LL MISS YOU and JUSTICE. YOU WERE THE BRAVEST. WE’LL MISS YOU.

And after, it was just the Smajors and Pearl, staring at each other.

And as her father pulled out explosives, Haley closed her eyes, and hoped she’d see them all again someday.

And then she woke up to a cool breeze, and a soft fragrance.

She was laying at the bottom of a hill, her eyepatch gone, her father’s jacket wrapped around her shoulders. And at the top of the hill stood six familiar figures, waiting for her. And she smiled. And she got up, not turning back, not seeing the grave behind her.

HALEY. YOU DESERVED SO MUCH MORE THAN WE GAVE YOU. I’M SORRY
