► BIOGRAPHY
TW; Religion mention
Nirvana was born with a gift to appreciate the unusual. At least, that's how her aunt would explain her all-black attire and obscurely-colored hair phase at family events. She was always a square peg in a round hole. This was something she grew used to and actually favored her individuality. There was a part of her that pitied the other girls who attempted to fit in when she grew up being shamelessly herself. Though she was labeled as an outcast, she still had something about her that drew people in. She had a great group of friends, and her fair share of experimental relationships. In short: she didn't miss anything, but she wouldn't have cared if she did. Her aunt was the one who taught her about spirituality after Nirvana had a paranormal experience at the age of 5. Whilst being in a Catholic household, Nirvana and her aunt would often sneak in order to practice their own eclectic belief. Magic, tarot cards, seances, you name it - Nirvana has dabbled in it. What no one was expecting was for her to make a career move out of it. It started in high school, she helped assist her teacher in their paranormal investigation group. It was through this teacher that she learned about anomalies and the role of the paranormal in anthropology. Her job as an investigator was just the groundwork for her BA in Anthropology with a specialization in Women and Minority Studies where she learned more about the occult across various religions and cultures as well as witchcraft and the impact and power women have within interaction, at the University of Exeter. She then went on to gain a MA in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Stockon University in NJ. Currently, Nirvana is working on her PhD at NYU with an individualized specialization/research concentration in Parapsychology. At this point in her career, she can be seen as an expert in the occult. She actually works to help victims/survivors of cults, is still a researcher for a paranormal investigation team, and is also hosts a podcast about horror movies, the paranormal and the occult.
► PERSONALITY (DEEP DIVE)
Nirvana is one of those people who can attract and attract and attract, but still feel alone underneath the surface. She loves knowledge and the pursuit of knowledge; If she could be a student her whole life, she would. This combination of coming across as approachable but also seeming highly intelligent, is very intimidating to most. Though, if one were to sit and speak with Nirvana, they would see she has a heart big enough to match her mind and is just an obscure nerd in her own right. She can be sarcastic and condescending if someone asks a question she deems as 'stupid'. She's known to bully as her type of flirting. She's actually not online, and prefers it that way. She's clever and witty and goes on passion-dump sprees pretty often about a new book she's reading, or about her research or podcast. She loves people who have a sense of humor. Nirvana is more introverted than extroverted and also has a busy schedule, so it may be hard to reach her at times and she's well aware of this. If she values someone, she makes sure she sets time aside for them. She's really a big mushy nerd guys, but she has so many phases and you never know what you're gonna get when you meet her. She's moon-coded, okay?

Nutritional Supplements - Should I Take Them?
The purpose of nutritional supplements is to complement a healthy diet, not to replace it. Nutritional supplements may not be necessary if you eat various foods and are generally healthy.
However, fortified foods and dietary supplements may sometimes provide one or more nutrients. It is recommended that pregnant women or women who wish to become pregnant take prenatal vitamins containing folic acid.
A nutritional supplement may also be beneficial if you don't consume enough healthy foods or don't eat a healthy variety of foods, especially if you have an underlying medical condition.
A medical doctor or dietitian should discuss whether nutritional supplements are right for you. Ask about side effects and possible interactions with medications when considering dietary supplements.

The FDA is investigating the accuracy of Abbott’s rapid coronavirus tests. (Pexels/)
Follow all of PopSci’s COVID-19 coverage here, including tips on cleaning groceries, ways to tell if your symptoms are just allergies, and a tutorial on making your own mask.
America is inching back to life. We still have a long way to go before we can safely do things like eat at a restaurant with family and friends, and many of the states that are rushing to reopen businesses actually still have a rising number of cases. But with cases in some of the hardest-hit areas beginning to level off, many Americans are looking forward to news that we might one day return to normalcy—perhaps with the help of new COVID-19 treatments or vaccines. This week is bringing some good news on that front. Here’s the latest coronavirus news you should know.
Moderna’s coronavirus vaccine is showing promising early results
The Boston-based biotech company Moderna has been working on a vaccine that employs SARS-CoV-2’s mRNA, which is what the virus uses to replicate itself inside our cells. On Monday the company announced that its preliminary testing—on just eight subjects, all of whom were healthy—was successful. The vaccine safely created antibodies robust enough to stop the virus from replicating in a petri dish, and which were similar in number and strength to those found in people who have recovered from COVID-19.
This all sounds promising—and it is. But the trial represents just one small step in the long journey of developing, testing, and distributing a vaccine. Researchers still need to study the vaccine’s efficacy in larger, more varied groups of test subjects.
Moderna is just one of many potential vaccines that the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease (NIAID) is helping to fund and conduct clinical trials for. While some groups hope to have products ready by autumn of this year, most are working on a timeline of a year or even longer. But it’s not just a question of who can finish first: Given that we’ll need to vaccinate a large percentage of the global population to halt the spread of COVID-19, experts agree that one vaccine is unlikely to be enough. If Moderna successfully makes it to market, it will hopefully be one of several available vaccines to prevent COVID-19.
President Trump claims he’s taking hydroxychloroquine to prevent COVID-19 symptoms
On Monday, US President Donald Trump told the press that he’d been taking zinc and hydroxychloroquine for the last week and a half. While the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has allowed some hospitals to administer the anti-malaria drug to COVID-19 patients, evidence on its efficacy against the novel coronavirus is scant—and the FDA does not actually approve its use. In April, the FDA warned that heart problems could result from the use of hydroxychloroquine. For now, most experts agree that seeking out the drug to protect you from COVID-19 is a bad idea. Last month, the president seemed to suggest that injecting some kind of disinfectant could clear the novel coronavirus out of the lungs. He later claimed that his comments were meant to be sarcastic, but groups that sell recipes for dangerous, bleach-based therapies celebrated the suggestion.
The FDA is investigating the accuracy of Abbott’s rapid coronavirus tests
Back in March, the FDA granted emergency use to medical device company Abbott’s ID NOW, a point-of-care testing device that can provide COVID test results in as little as 15 minutes. Since then, outside studies on the test’s effectiveness have been bleak. Diagnostic tests should have accuracy rates of at least 95 percent, according to researchers, which means the chance of a false-negative (where a person has it but the test says they don’t) is 5 percent or less.
Early studies indicated that Abbott’s test had 85 percent reliability, but more recent research suggests ID NOW could be failing to detect as many as 48 percent of infections. This week, the FDA issued an alert on the device, which has been used in the White House to test members of the cabinet, including President Donald Trump. The FDA will perform a more extensive investigation to better understand the issue: It’s not yet clear weather the device itself is responsible for the high false-negative rate, or if the inaccuracy has to do with how the tools are being transported and used.
Cats can spread the coronavirus to each other, but it’s unlikely they will spread it to humans
Several cats, including tigers and lions at the Bronx Zoo, have tested positive for SARS-CoV-2. This has led to growing concerns among cat owners as to whether their pets were in danger—and whether the felines might transmit the virus to humans.
In a study published last week in the New England Journal of Medicine, researchers reported that cats can infect other cats they regularly interact with, but are unlikely to feel any symptoms close to what humans are experiencing.
To date, there have been no reports of a human becoming infected with the virus due to interactions with an infected cat. Karen Terio, chief of the Zoological Pathology Program at the University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine, told the New York Times that it’s more likely that cats will get COVID-19 after their owners do. “Given the limited social circle of most domestic cats, cats are most likely to become infected after contact with a human member of their household,” she said.
But the authors of the new study say we can’t completely rule out the possibility of cat-to-human transmission, and say further research is needed to understand how the virus passes between people and pets.
Not all Inflammatory Bowel Disease meds increase risk of severe COVID-19 symptoms
In a pre-print of a study accepted into the peer-reviewed journal, Gastroenterology, but not yet published, researchers found that patients with inflammatory bowel disease—Crohn’s disease and Ulcerative Colitis—who take a group of medications known as TNF-inhibitors were not at a higher risk for experiencing a severe case of COVID-19. Common brand names for these drugs include Humira, Remica, Cimzia, and Enbrel.
These medications, also known as biologics, work by suppressing a specific action of the immune system. There has been a growing concern that people taking these and other immunosuppressive medications could be at a higher risk of fairing worse from COVID-19. These aren’t the only drugs that cause immunosuppression, however. And the researchers did find that IBD patients taking corticosteroids, which also suppress the immune system, as well as those who were older and with other health problems, were indeed at a higher risk for severe COVID-19.
People often take these TNF-inhibitor medications as a long-term maintenance therapy to prevent not only IBD but other autoimmune and auto-inflammatory conditions. As of now, the general recommendation from physicians has been to stay on these medications despite their potential to suppress the immune response to COVID. This study adds some support to this recommendation, but more research is needed to know for sure.

Trading Houseplants and Making Friends
Elisabeth Andersson, a 23-year-old stock exchange analyst, was in a bind. She had a new cat that was eating her aloe plants. No friend or family member wanted the plants, nor could she bring herself to just trash them. “I had been growing the plant for 9 or 10 years, harvesting the little babies and replanting them,” she said. “It would make me too sad.”
So when her apartment building, a TF Cornerstone property in Long Island City, advertised a communal plant swap, she attended.
One Saturday this fall, she placed her plants (including a jade) on a table in the courtyard. She spent hours convincing fellow participants to trade their species for hers. She returned home with a new cactus her cat wouldn’t touch.
It was also fun socially. “These people are like homegrown botanists,” she said. “They made me want to learn more.”
Plant swaps are gaining in popularity across New York City. Some are organized events. Others are individual trades that occur with the help of listservs or social media. It’s a solution for people who might want to diversify their collection or who need to get rid of their plants — perhaps because of an allergy or a new workplace policy that doesn’t allow them.
“People are starting to look at their plants differently,” said Summer Rayne Oakes, author of “How to Make a Plant Love You.” She has organized plant swaps across the country, including the one that Ms. Andersson attended in Long Island City. “There is a trend of people trading clips that they have grown or plants they got from their parents. It’s meaningful.”
Her first plant swap took place in the fall of 2017 at Lululemon’s Hub Seventeen, the brand’s event space. (“It’s hard to find great spaces in the city that are relatively open,” she explained. “You need table space. You need horizontal space.”) She advertised it through social media and was thrilled when 70 people attended. Since then she has organized eight plant swaps, six of them in New York City. Tickets cost $10 to $15 (donated to charity) and include gift bags, panels and nonalcoholic drinks like kombucha.
Earlier this year, she launched a global calendar where people all over the world can advertise their events on Homestead Brooklyn. Since April, the site has listed 84 plant swaps, most of them in the U.S., but also including ones in Sydney, Cape Town and Amsterdam.
For Robert Jeffery, a 31-year-old clinical lab supervisor in Williamsburg, the timing of plant swaps has never been right. “I just returned from visiting Chatuchak Flower Market in Bangkok, and I was also able to visit the Jianguo Weekend flower market in Taipei,” he said over email. “Turns out I had at least two other friends hosting plant swaps back in the city while I was away. FOMO.” So he’s getting the job done over social media.
On an Instagram story, he shared his desire to own a peperomia argyreia, a South American plant whose leaves look like a watermelon. He is now swapping a few stems of that plant for ceropegia woodii, also called rosary vine and native to South Africa, and senecio rowleyanus or string-of-pearls, which is native to southwest Africa, with a stranger from Sunset Park. Instagram has been so successful, he said, “It is sort of like Plant Currency, PlantCoin.”
Other people turn to dedicated plant swapping sites.
A few years ago, Luca Iorga, who splits her time between the Bronx and Owego, N. Y., where she runs a domestic animal sanctuary, was walking in midtown when she saw a gigantic, healthy plant in a dumpster. Realizing people needed a way to recycle their houseplants if they’re moving or if they simply no longer have space for a particular plant, she launched PlantSwap.org, a social network where people can list species they want to give or receive. “We had 44 people sign up the first day,” she said. “Now in the New York City area alone, we have about 1,250 users.”
Larger companies and nonprofit organizations are starting to use the free service.
Art Start, a nonprofit organization that works inside Nelson Family Residence, a family shelter in the South Bronx, received 43 plants from a company that was moving offices and couldn’t take their plants with them. “Without those plants being donated there is no way we could have afforded them at that size and quality,” said Mariam Aryai Rivera, an associate program manager for Art Start. Among the plants donated were dracaena warneckii, a plant native to tropical Africa that is known for its pointy, striped leaves and that can cost more than $100 each.
Of course plant swapping can come with risks. “If I see a listing of something obviously diseased, I take it down,” said Ms. Iorga. “But I honestly can’t guarantee these plants are healthy.”
There is also the trouble involved with finding a perfect match. Many people using these services are looking for rare or exotic plants.
“The process was much more competitive and cut throat than I expected,” said Ms. Andersson. “I had beginner plants, and all these people had exotic ones. I would be like, “Are you willing to trade a cactus for an aloe and they would say, ‘Nah.’”
But she, like many plant lovers, will tell you that’s also part of the fun. “I can’t wait to go again,” she said. “I will definitely prepare a little more next time. I need selling points and to pick my best plants and bring them all clean and shiny.”
In late November, Jules Hunt, 28, an Austin native who runs a wellness and mindful lifestyle brand, hosted a plant swap at Athleta, a sports clothing store in the Flatiron district. She wanted the event to be more about community and fun than competition.
“I know some people can take plant swaps very seriously,” she said. So she dedicated half an hour at the beginning of the evening to strictly socializing before getting down to business. The 30 participants were having so much fun chatting they stayed long after the plant swapping had ended.

The US just had its deadliest day of the pandemic yet. June could be worse.
On May 1 the country experienced its highest reported daily death toll yet: 2,909. (Pixabay/)
Follow all of PopSci’s COVID-19 coverage here, including tips on cleaning groceries, ways to tell if your symptoms are just allergies, and a tutorial on making your own mask.
As we enter our third month with social distancing at the crux of daily life, Americans seem more eager than ever to leave the coronavirus pandemic behind them. But as the weather becomes increasingly summery, government and public health officials warn the country has yet to reach its COVID-19 peak. Here are some of this week’s most significant pandemic developments.
As states start to reopen, experts say America could hit 3,000 daily deaths from COVID-19 by June 1
May 1 was the deadliest day yet in the United States’ COVID-19 epidemic, with a reported death toll of 2,909. The second-highest death toll, according to data from the World Health Organization, was 2,471 on April 23.
This grim statistic isn’t completely surprising. Because patients with the novel coronavirus are often hospitalized for weeks, the sudden spike in deaths isn’t strange. It’s also not an anomaly. Projections by a group of federal agencies obtained and published Monday by The New York Times indicate a steady increase in reported cases over the next several weeks, with daily deaths hitting 3,000 by June 1.
On May 3, the US COVID-19 death toll reached 67,000—several thousand fatalities higher than President Donald Trump previously estimated for the entire pandemic. He has now revised his estimate to 100,000 total fatalities.
All of this comes as some states begin to ease social distancing restrictions and reopen businesses. In fact, many of the states that have already eased these restrictions are still experiencing an increase in cases, according to The Times. This includes Iowa, Minnesota, Tennessee, Texas, Indiana, Kansas, Nebraska, and Alaska. While social distancing is working to flatten the curve, the threat of COVID-19 is still eminently present—and opening things up too hastily could cause cases to surge.
Everyone wants to get tested for the coronavirus
Around 25 percent of people who test positive for COVID-19 are what researchers call “silent spreaders.” Despite showing no signs of illness, these folks still carry and spread the novel coronavirus. This makes determining the true percent of infected Americans a nightmare for epidemiologists, and also makes many people wonder if they’ve already had the virus without knowing it.
Cities and states around the country are trying to ramp up their testing efforts to include residents without symptoms. Los Angeles set up a website to allow anyone to set up an appointment to get tested. Some cities in New Jersey, one of the hardest hit states in the US, are also working to offer testing for all residents. This kind of comprehensive screening will help health officials determine the true number of infected individuals in various regions, which will also help them determine when it’s safe to ease up on social distancing measures.
A pug in North Carolina became the first US dog to test positive for the coronavirus
The pug, named Winston, was tested after its owners had tested positive for COVID-19 themselves. The dog had very mild symptoms—he was breathing strangely and sneezing—which prompted the family to get him tested. This isn’t the first animal to fall prey to the pandemic: A few house cats and even a tiger at New York’s Bronx Zoo have all tested positive for the novel coronavirus, along with a number of dogs and cats in other countries. To date, all the animals have shown only mild symptoms and have completely recovered.
The American Veterinary Medical Association still doesn’t recommend more intensive testing on pets. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention does not think pets play a significant role in disease transmission.
Red, swollen toes may be a sign of COVID-19
Dermatologists across the world have identified a strange connection between a skin condition and the novel coronavirus. An uptick in toe rashes, which often appear in red patches similar to mild frostbite, caused dermatologists and other researchers to look into a possible connection between infection with the new virus and these skin reactions. As one dermatologist told The Washington Post, “My inbox and my telemedicine clinic are full of just toes. It’s all about toes. I have never seen so many toes.”
They noted that this swelling and irritation often occurs in children and young adults with otherwise mild COVID-19, and could be a reaction of the immune system. This is yet another example of the novel virus’ strange workings that doctors have yet to fully understand.
If you do see any reaction like this, it could be a good reason to reach out to your physician, especially if you are in a hot zone for the virus. However, it’s unlikely to be an immediate cause for concern, according to The Post—most cases of novel coronavirus with these rashes were benign. In fact, it may be an outward sign that your immune system is putting up a good fight.
As the number of labs offering antibody tests ramps up, the tests themselves get further scrutiny from the FDA
Back in March, the Food and Drug Administration loosened its restrictions on approving antibody tests for COVID-19, allowing any company to sell these tests without having to prove they work. That backfired: The antibody tests that have hit the market in recent weeks vary widely in accuracy. Now the FDA will require any makers of antibody tests to prove their products actually work; they must submit their request along with data to show their screening methods are sound.
