I’m pretty sure that’s the rump of a Allen’s Hummingbird female, keeping her two tic-tac sized eggs warm in the cool 58 F breezy overcast Southern California evening.
As soon as the kids hatch, and start to get their plumage I’ll take a picture while their mom is out foraging.
You know, as beautiful and dazzling as male, hummingbird, plumage is, they are completely worthless as Fathers in the animal kingdom. Two seconds of copulation in the air & a short lifetime of fighting off everyone who approached their feeder or flowers. The females do all the work, building the nest alone, incubating the eggs alone, feeding two kids as a single mom all alone. It’s not how I was taught as a human being to be a father or a gentleman. But then again, I don’t have beautiful plumage, and I cannot hover or fly backwards. 🤣
right so, obvs, we have swanatello. received some delightful fanart of leonardcrow or peanardo. and i've got raphaeowl. but... i couldn't think of a good pun for mikey... but then i got some beautiful fanart of mikey as a hummingbird lately and i was like. oh, a hummingbird is PERFECT for him, but i wish it was a pu-- WAIT
"A close relative of the Rufous Hummingbird, Allen's has a more limited range, nesting mostly in California. This is one of the two common nesting hummingbirds in northern California gardens (Anna's is the other). Females and immatures of Allen's Hummingbird are almost impossible to separate from Rufous females without close examination, so the status of the species in migration is still being worked out by dedicated hummingbird banders."
Need Tim with longer hair and just letting Bart play with it as a fidget toy.
Just them mindlessly having so much physical contact with no thoughts about it.
