Elvis Presley Events In History Today The 21st November in 1964 Is Sixteenth Movie Was Premiered In Hollywood. Roustabout By Paramount.
Elvis Presley’s sixteenth movie was the 1964 Paramount film 'Roustabout'.
Playing opposite Barbara Stanwyck this time out in Roustabout, Elvis Presley was in awe of his costar and worked hard to live up to her professional standards. Unfortunately, the scriptwriters were less demanding of themselves, and the film suffers from banal dialogue and predictable plotting. Elvis Presley starred as Charlie Rogers, a drifter with a chip on his shoulder who lands a job as a roustabout, or handyman, with a down-and-out carnival operated by strong-willed Maggie Morgan, played by Stanwyck. When Charlie breaks into song on the midway one day, throngs of young people flock to hear him sing. As news of his talent spreads, Maggie's carnival begins to turn a tidy profit. Charlie's good fortune continues as Cathy, a beautiful young carnival worker played by Joan Freeman, takes a romantic interest in him. However, after a misunderstanding involving a customer's missing wallet, Maggie and Cathy chide Charlie for his selfish attitudes. The embittered young man quits Maggie's outfit to work for a rival carnival. When Maggie's carnival starts to go under, Charlie returns with enough money to ward off the creditors. His unselfish act wins Maggie's respect as well as Cathy's heart. Having at one time been a carnival worker, the idea for a picture with a carnival background had been that of Colonel Tom Parker, Elvis Presley’s manager. However, Colonel was adamant that the movie 'not cheapen carnival life....that this was a wholesome way of life in which the participants had a legitimate pride'.
The movie was first announced in May of 1961, but production was delayed until March of 1964. In the time between there were changes. Among them were: that the working title went from 'Right This Way Folks' to 'Roustabout'; that Elvis Presley’s character name changed from Charlie Main to Charlie Rogers; and that the character of carnival owner Maggie Moore changed to Maggie Morgan; and that the actress chosen to play Morgan changed from Mae West to Barbara Stanwyck. The writers were Anthony Lawrence and Allan Weiss.
Anthony Lawrence later worked on the scripts for the Elvis movies 'Paradise Hawaiian Style' and 'Easy Come, Easy Go' and the 1979 TV biopic 'Elvis', starring Kurt Russell in the title role. Among his other credits are a number of TV series including 'The Fugitive', 'Hawaii Five-O', 'Cannon', 'Quincy' and 'The Blue Knight'.
Allan Weiss was the screenwriter for the Elvis Presley’s flims 'Blue Hawaii', 'Girls! Girls! Girls!', 'Fun In Acapulco', 'Paradise Hawaiian Style' and 'Easy Come, Easy Go'. He once remarked that the scripts were written to producer Hal Wallis's specifications: 'Wallis kept the screenplays shallow'.
'I was asked to create a believable framework for twelve songs and lots of girls'. However true this was, both Mr. Lawrence and Mr. Weiss received a nomination from the Writers Guild of America in 1965 for their work on 'Roustabout' as the Best Written American Musical of 1964.
The director was John Rich and this was his first time to work with Elvis Presley He came from a strong background in TV, having directed such series as 'Our Miss Brooks', 'I Married Joan', 'Gunsmoke', 'The Rifleman', 'The Andy Griffith Show', 'The Dick Van Dyke Show' and 'Gilligan's Island'. He was anxious to break into film directing with Hal Wallis. He wasn't impressed with Elvis Presley’s Memphis Mafia entourage and their constant hanging around and playing practical jokes on one another. Elvis Presley told Mr. Rich, '...when these damn movies cease to be fun, I'll stop doing them. And if my guys go, (expletive), so do I'. Elvis Presley and Mr. Rich had gotten off to a shaky start when Elvis Presley cajoled the director into allowing him to do his own stunt fight, which was very uncommon then due to the possibility of the star's being hurt and shutting down production. When Elvis Presley indeed was hurt in the stunt and required several stitches above his eye, Mr. Rich was afraid to tell Hal Wallis that he'd allowed their star to become injured. Then he came up with a plan to write into the script the bandage that covered the stitches and thus production wasn't halted and Wallis was appeased. John Rich later directed Elvis in 'Easy Come, Easy Go'. By that time he was disillusioned with Hal Wallis and his methods and had developed a respect for Elvis Presley And No Big Star Had Ever Put Him Straight Like He Did When He Told If These Damn Movies Cease To Be Fun I’ll Stop Doing Them. He Really Admired And Respected Elvis Presley For Standing Up And Speaking Is Mind Although Parker Wasn’t Happy As He Pulled Elvis Presley Up Rich returned to directing TV series including such programs as 'All In The Family', 'Sanford and Son', 'Maude', 'The Jeffersons', 'Barney Miller', 'Newhart', 'Dear John' and 'Murphy Brown' among others. He has received many accolades including seven Emmy nominations with three Emmy wins.
On February 26, 1964, Elvis Presley reported to Paramount for pre-production. He started with soundtrack recording sessions at Radio Recorders of Hollywood. On March 3, Elvis Presley recorded the version of the title song 'Roustabout' that was written by Otis Blackwell and Winfield Scott. It was not used in the film. Instead they used a different song with the same title written by Bill Giant, Bernie Baum and Florence Kaye.
Elvis Presley recorded his vocals for that second song on April 29, 1964 after the principal photography was shot. An acetate of Elvis Presley’s long-thought-lost Blackwell/Scott song was found in Winfield Scott's basement and RCA first released it as a bonus track on the 2003 Elvis 2nd To None album. To differentiate it from the one used in the movie, the title was changed to 'I'm a Roustabout'.
Elvis Presley became frustrated during these sessions when he wanted The Jordanaires to back him up on a song that he would be seen singing alone in the film while riding a motorcycle down the road.
One of the producers questioned him as to where the backup singers would be in the shot.
Elvis Presley snapped back, 'The same damn place as the band!'
One of the songs in the film, 'It's A Wonderful World', written by Sid Tepper and Roy C. Bennett, was for a time in contention for an Academy Award nomination as Best Song.
For authenticity in Elvis Presley’s sixteenth film, 'Roustabout', a real carnival was employed and set up on land near Thousand Oaks, California. This was one of the locations used for exterior shots in the movie. The interior shots used three connecting sound stages (Nos. 12, 14 and 15) on the Paramount lot. The doors between them were opened up to make them into one huge stage, which was needed to accommodate the set for the big tent scenes. This was the first time in the history of the studio that they had done this.

Dread by the Decade: Der Student von Prag
👻 You can support me on Ko-fi ❤️
Tumblr media
★★★★
Plot: When a poor student falls in love with a countess, he makes a deal for gold with a shady stranger.
Review: Though it tells a familiar morality tale, the film is elevated by engaging leads, impressive effects, and a provocative ending.
Tumblr media
English Title: The Student of Prague Source Material: Faust by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, "William Wilson" by Edgar Allan Poe, and “The December Night” by W.S. Merwin Year: 1913 Genre: Occult, Gothic Country: German Empire Language: Silent Runtime: 1 hour 25 minutes
Tumblr media
Director: Stellan Rye Writer: Hanns Heinz Ewers Cinematographer: Guido Seeber Composer: Josef Weiss Cast: Paul Wegener, John Gottowt, Grete Berger, Lyda Salmonova, Lothar Körner
Tumblr media
------
Story: 4/5 - While not the most unique, its solid pacing and sympathetic characters prevent it from feeling stale.
Performances: 4/5 - Wegener and Berger are great as lovesick people trapped by their stations in life, and Gottowt’s Scapinelli is a wonderful mix of hammy and sinister.
Tumblr media
Cinematography: 4/5 - Well-framed and varied shots with solid lighting. The use of shadow during Balduin’s card game stands out.
Editing: 3/5
Music: 2.5 - Not memorable.
Effects: 4/5 - The effects and editing used to create the doppelgänger effect are near seamless.
Sets: 3/5 - Prague’s architecture should have been featured more, but the sets are still realistic.
Costumes and Make-Up: 4/5 - High quality and mostly period appropriate. Scapinelli’s make-up and beard are fun.

Trigger Warnings:
Incest (the countess is betrothed against her will to her cousin)

Brian Jones at Stones´ Office 46A Maddox Street in 1968
"This concert was Brian's last live appearance. He was by now completely disenchanted with the general pop scene, and told everyone he was hung up on electronic and experimental sounds. He should have been encouraged in this, but Mick's possesiveness reappeared when the manufacturers of the newly invented Moog synthesizer sent a representative to London to teach him how to operate the complex instrument, with it's his huge variety of sounds; this was to help him write the score for the film Performance. Mick never mastered the instrument, which could have been very useful for the Stones too, but no one else ever had the chance to get to grips with it when his interest dimmed. Significantly, Brian said that if there was no room for electronic and experimental sound on the Stones' new album, he would like to do something separately." - Bill Wyman: Stone Alone
postscript - "Jon Weiss, the Man from Moog, who traveled to London in the summer of 1968 with a series of black carrying cases that contained the component parts of the Moog Series III modular synthesizer. His students in London were to be the Rolling Stones, whose manager, Allan Klein, had managed to convince Robert Moog that, for promotional purposes, the Stones would receive a Moog synthesizer and a week’s free tuition..."

How did Edgar Allan Poe die?
The Cooping Theory This is the theory given in the vast majority of Poe biographies, although it cannot be proven true. Coincidence or not, the day Poe was found on the street was election day in Baltimore and the place near where he was found, Ryan's Fourth Ward Polls, was both a bar and a place for voting. In those days, Baltimore elections were notorious for corruption and violence. Political gangs were willing to go to great extremes to ensure the success of their candidates. Election ballots were stolen, judges were bribed and potential voters for the opposition intimidated. Some gangs were known to kidnap innocent bystanders, holding them in a room, called the "coop." These poor souls were then forced to go in and out of poll after poll, voting over and over again. Their clothing might even be changed to allow for another round. To ensure compliance, their victims were plied with liquor and beaten. Poe's weak heart would never have withstood such abuse. This theory appears to have been first offered publicly by John R. Thompson in the early 1870s to explain Poe's condition and the fact that he was wearing someone else's clothing. A possible flaw in the theory is that Poe was reasonably well-known in Baltimore and likely to be recognized.
The eminent Poe scholar Dr. Thomas Ollive Mabbott, quoting Robert D'Unger, dismissed the cooping theory as "twaddle," but neither offers any explanation. It does answer some of the stranger details and may yet be shown to have some merit. James A. Harrison seems to accept the cooping theory. Didier's book The Poe Cult reprints his article on "The True Cause of Poe's Death" in which he quotes a letter from a person who claims to have seen Poe "in the coop." This information was sent to Didier by Alexander Hynds on December 8, 1879. Hynds, a Baltimore attorney, identified the source only as "my friend, a prominent man of San Francisco." Since the ultimate source for the letter remained anonymous, it has generally been dismissed as journalistic sensationalism. In his own biography of Poe, John Joyce quotes the identical letter, also without identifying the source, and claiming it as if it had been related to him personally (John A. Joyce, Edgar Allan Poe, New York: F. T. Neely, 1901, pp. 195-197). Mrs. Weiss adds further to the confusion by repeating the same article, but attributing it, ironically, to Dr. Snodgrass (Weiss, Home Life of Poe, 207-211).
Didier had already published a slightly different account : "he met some of his old West-Point friends, who invited him to a champagne-supper that night. At first he refused to drink, but at last he was induced to take a glass of champagne. That set him off, and, in a few hours, he was madly drunk. In this state he wandered off from his friends, was robbed and beaten by ruffians, and left insensible in the street all night" (Didier, "The Grave of Poe," Appleton's Journal, VII, January 27, 1872, p. 104). One wonders if Didier's opinion was changed by convicing evidence or mere preference.
N. H. Morrison's letter to J. H. Ingram, November 27, 1874, includes these comments "The story of Poe's death has never been told. Nelson [Neilson] Poe has all the facts, but I am afraid may not be willing to tell them. I do not see why. The actual facts are less discreditable than the common reports published. Poe came to the city in the midst of an election, and that election was the cause of his death" (Miller, Building Poe Biography, p. 49). Neilson, Poe's cousin, spoke briefly at the dedication of Poe's memorial grave in 1875, but made no statement concerning the circumstances of Edgar's death. If Neilson Poe had specific information about Poe's final days, he apparently took it with him to the grave.
William Hand Browne's letter to J. H. Ingram, August 24, 1874, includes these comments "The general belief here is, that Poe was seized by one of these gangs, (his death happening just at election-time; an election for sheriff took place on Oct. 4th), 'cooped,' stupefied with liquor, dragged out and voted, and then turned adrift to die" (Miller, Building Poe Biography, p. 69).

Donald Eugene Weiss, 92, went to be with the Lord on January 24, 2024. He was born to Hilbert and Bernice Weiss on November 21, 1931, the seventh of eight siblings: Lester, Vera Mae, Bob, Virginia, Evelyn, Deloris, and Larry, who was born nine years after Don. He was born at home, on Indiana State Road 331, just south of Wyatt.
During these years of the Depression, the family moved from farm to farm, ending up west of LaPaz. He graduated from LaPaz High School in 1949. He met his future bride, Kaye Beals, through the LaPaz Bible Club, of which her folks were sponsors. They were married on June 16, 1961, in Plymouth, IN, after both had graduated from Bob Jones University. Don's major at BJU was Practical Christian Training because his burden was to lead others into a real relationship with their Creator God! He began his ministry leading Bible Clubs in the Youth for Christ International organization, beginning with the Marshall County YFC.
He followed this work with a pastoral ministry, serving churches in Walton, IN, Stephenson, MI, Annandale, VA, and Elkhart, IN.
Don's parents preceded him in death, as well as all seven of his siblings. He has left behind his wife, Kaye, and their four children - Brian (Joy) Weiss, Kathryn (Eric) Woods, Shelly (Jeff) Carroll, and Pamela (Bret) Baker - who have given them ten grandchildren - Erica and Brandon Woods, Dylan and Sean Carroll, Carly and Madison Weiss, and Zachary, Drew, Seth, and Alison Baker. Brandon Woods married Larissa Mohl and gave us our first great-grandson, Allan Woods, whom the LORD took home to be with Him at birth. Don is also survived by brother-in-law Dwight Handschu, sisters-in-law Marjorie Weiss and Diana Weiss, and 14 nephews and nieces.
Don was glad to "spend and be spent" for the people he ministered to. He loved flowers, and gardening was a respite for him from the cares of ministry. Farming was the "lot cast into his lap" by his father. He did not want to farm for a living, BUT any time there was a farmer in his congregation, he very readily offered to help out with the plowing and planting in the spring if they'd let him! While living in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, he enjoyed working in the woods, cutting trees for extra money, which was the trade of many in our church there.
A memorial service will be held in his memory on Saturday, February 10, 2024 at Community Baptist Church, 5715 Miami St., South Bend, IN. There will be a gathering at 1:00 p.m. for fellowship with friends we haven't seen in a long time coming from faraway places! The service will be held at 2:00 p.m. with Community Baptist Pastor Joe Fant and Pastor Matthew Elliott of Grace Baptist Church, Plymouth, sharing the service. Anyone interested in giving gifts in Don's memory may donate to either of these two churches or to Bob Jones University for the training of future pastors. Online condolences may be sent to the family at www.mishlerfuneralhomes.com

"Poe afterward attempted to defend himself against this reproach and the whole scandal of the season by attributing its excesses to his grief and anxiety on account of his wife, whom, he says, he 'loved as man never loved before,' a phrase the extravagance which, betrays its insincerity." 🍵
