It occurred to me that I've been posting a lot about Kendrick's halftime show without linking the whole thing, which is an unforced error on my part. The Not Like Us part gets a lot of attention, and rightfully so but wow the other stuff is cool too. The scene show is astounding, and the build-up to Not Like Us is powerful. Kendrick knew he had a cultural moment on his hands and he put the work in.

#kendrick lamar#superbowl halftime show#Also upon rewatching I'm low-key impressed by how well a lot of the censored lines flow#Kendrick adjusted some lines - most notably in Not Like Us I think - to flow ok even with the omitted words#which is honestly feels like the animating spirit of the whole performance imo#The whole thing with broadcast TV is that it's supposed to be “safe” to white American sensibilities#and Kendrick decided to make the most subversive thing he could given those constraints#ending up with this performance that highlights how the US is built off the back of black people#all the while mocking the anti-blackness and whitewashing of modern civil liberty discourse#and saying “hey fuck you” to Drake - of course#It's one for the books make no mistake.#Youtube
