#skelly speaks#i cant find anything about the licensing or such changing...#plenty of other piero piccioni albums and things are untouched#so i wonder if the amore amore amore album was under specific copyrights or different studios?#it WAS like a 2018 remaster collection maybe??? augh#all the versions with vocals are the julie rogers version....#which is fantastic in its own right but it isnt the same.#the harmonic version on amore amore amore had a much smoother dreamier feel to it vocally and instrumentally...#julie rogers is a phemomenal vocalist! but her tones are just a bit more intense. jarring in comparison#but a single vocalist would struggle to achieve that sort of melting feeling a larger harmonic choir can achieve anyway 😭#youtubes missing all the videos of the track in question. apple music its missing too#other smaller music hosting websites are missing it too ):#its just been scorch earthed off the web suddenly like what the fuck man#i hate it here

QUEEN
Queen's debut album, Queen, was released in the UK fifty years ago today - 13th July 1973.
Created between April and November 1972, Queen was mostly recorded during downtime (late evening and overnight) at Trident Studios in St Anne's Court, Soho, central London.
Keep Yourself Alive was Queen's debut single. One of many different versions/mixes that are widely available. A 1975 re-working, intended as a contemporary B-side, was initially shelved but eventually emerged as a Hollywood Records bonus track under the title Long-Lost Re-Take. Doing All Right (a.k.a. Doin' Alright) was originally performed by Smile, with co-writer Tim Staffel on lead vocal. Piano by Brian May. This was the first song Freddie ever performed on piano in front of a Queen audience. Great King Rat was one of Freddie's earliest compositions, rarely played live in the early 70s but resurrected for the Works! tour in 1984. My Fairy King features Freddie on the piano for the first time on vinyl, and the debut of Roger's trademark high vocals. The lines horses born with eagles' wings, honey bees have lost their stings and teeth don't shine like pearls for poor men's eyes were inspired by Robert Browning's poem The Pied Piper Of Hamelin. Liar was written by Freddie (with Mike Bersin) when he was in the band Ibex, and originally titled Lover. One of the very few Queen recordings to feature a Hammond organ. The 3-minute US single edit has been summarily disowned by the band. The Night Comes Down was written by Brian May in 1970 and originally recorded in 1971. Modern Times Rock'n'Roll was written and sung by Roger, but Freddie took lead vocals when it was performed live in 1974. Son And Daughter was released in advance of the album, as the B-side of Keep Yourself Alive. Played live, it originally included the long guitar solo later worked into Brighton Rock, as can be heard on the BBC session versions (Queen On Air). Seven Seas Of Rhye... is part of the unfinished song that was to become their first hit single the following year. The finished Seven Seas Of Rhye was originally intended to open the second album, though this idea was eventually abandoned.
Other songs recorded during these sessions: Mad The Swine eventually saw the light of day in 1991 as a B-side of Headlong and a bonus track on the Hollywood Records re-release of Queen. Silver Salmon and Polar Bear were originally Smile songs written by Tim Staffel and Brian May. They were demoed by Queen in 1972 but eventually shelved. Hangman was a live favourite between 1970 and 1973 but its existence as a studio recording has always been repeatedly denied, however a 1972 Trident acetate featuring this song was later discovered and is now in the possession of Queen Productions. Lyrics by Freddie, music by Brian. Release it, guys, please.

The Notorious Byrd Brothers The Byrds (Columbia) released in 1968, this is roughly a 1986-1987 pressing
First things first: I’ve somehow decided that the Byrds fifth album, and their final album with David Crosby, might just be my favorite Byrds album (not that there are a great many contenders). Back in the late 90s when I was listening to The Byrds’ reissues I was convinced they were all brilliant albums. Today, I’m lucky if I think believe three of their albums are worth my time. I think I like them more as a singles band than an album band, and I believe that Gene Clark was the King Byrd, not Roger McGuinn. I agree with McGuinn’s assessment that he should have ended the Byrds long before he did. I realize I’m on the outer fringe of Byrd Appreciation, but I do believe if you want Byrdsian harmonies, this is the album you should grab for over any others. (I’m also fond of the fact that Crosby, never a favorite artist in any capacity, is represented in the fourth window on the album cover by a horse, even if it does give the equine a bad name.) I like the country lilt of this album over Sweetheart of The Rodeo because it is more understated and I prefer the vocals on this album because there are no exaggerated “country” vocals here like there are on their more famous country album.
I bought this sealed on eBay and the dealer wanted a small fortune for it. I reminded him that while the album itself is a 1968 release, it is still a repressing that is 20 years older than the actual album itself and therefore not worth the dough he wanted. What I didn’t tell him was the real reason I wanted this album: that back cover. If you look on discogs they claim that the only version of this album with that back cover that is suddenly a negative image instead of a normal image like it is on every other pressing over the years, hails from 1987. But if you look at the date on the price tag that is on the album cover (see a close up of that price tag below) the date stamped on that price tag reads July 1986.
Evidently discogs does not have every single existing copy of The Notorious Byrd Brothers listed or they have misrepresented a 1986 pressing as being a 1987 pressing. Regardless, either 1986, 1987 or both years contain the back of the album with a negative image photograph but I can find no other pressings that have this weird change. What prompted such a change? Perhaps a mistake? Perhaps someone simply remembered incorrectly how the image actually looked or who knows, maybe they just decided to change it thinking it better represented the music within (it doesn’t). Anyone’s guess is welcome, but the truth shall win out one day!
Perhaps I still paid too much for this album, but I do enjoy buying sealed copies of albums because that means it is actually my copy, not someone else’s. To have what I am calling my favorite Byrds albums with that alternate back cover that is unlike no other pressing, well, that satisfies me and the price becomes worth it. And come on, it has that Nice Price sticker which was such a common find back in the day that I always appreciate seeing it slapped on one of my albums! Another piece of information is that even when released in 1968, this album contained no inner sleeve and no credits other than what is on the back of the album. It was a bare bones release.
Below you will find the A and B side of the label. Since this is an 80s pressing it is the label with the golden “Columbia” and Walking Eye all in a circle around the label, another truly classic label from Columbia.
Lastly, in a photo pulled off discogs, you can see what the back of the album cover looks like on every pressing over the years save for this one I am highlighting!

Jody Miller’s Final Album Wayfaring Stranger Available Today On Heart of Texas Records
Heart of Texas Records is excited to announce Jody Miller’s latest release ‘Wayfaring Stranger-The Final Recordings.’ This six-song collection is the final recording project from Grammy Award Winner Jody Miller and even includes a re-recording of her biggest record. Jody Miller, a versatile singer with a rich, resonant voice who won a Grammy Award for “Queen of the House,” a homemaker’s reply to a hobo’s refrain, died on October 6, 2022, at her home in Blanchard, Oklahoma. She was 80 years old. Although lauded for her recordings in the folk, pop, patriotic and Gospel genres, her most consistent success came in the field of country music, where she notched six Top 10 Hot Country hits out of her 30 Billboard charting singles, including her Grammy-nominated cross-over version of “He’s So Fine.” It was Jody Miller’s intention to record a project primarily of songs that she had enjoyed performing throughout her illustrious career, but never had the opportunity to record. She entered the Heart of Texas Recording Studio in Brady, Texas, and recorded the old-time spirituals “Wayfaring Stranger” and “Tramp On The Street.” Miller recalled hearing both of these songs as a child growing up and cited Molly O’Day’s version of “Tramp On The Street” as one of her favorite versions of the classic. The song “I Can’t Even Walk Without You Holding My Hand” became a personal favorite and testimony of Miller, especially during the last few years of her life. Written in 1974, by Colbert and Joyce Croft, the lines “I can’t even walk without You holding my hand. The mountain’s too high and the valley’s too wide. Down on my knees, I learned to stand. And I can’t even walk without You holding my hand” gave inspiration to Miller as she struggled with a debilitating disease. “For the past several years, I’ve been dealing with the effects of Parkinson’s Disease,” Miller wrote in July of 2022. “Through God’s grace and help of my family and close friends, I have been able to complete this project. Although I wish I had been stronger, I am so happy and grateful to share the messages of faith and inspiration conveyed through the words and music of most of these songs. I pray that they will be an encouragement to you.” Miller also included a new song “Blessed Are The Believers, and asked her long-time friend and fellow label mate Tony Booth to duet with her on the record. Miller and Booth were originally label mates on Capitol Records, and each spent a lot of time touring on the West Coast. Miller’s friend Bill Lorance, a confidante of fellow Oklahoma music legend Kay Starr, presented Yvonne DeVaney’s country song “My Exes” to Miller, and she immediately decided to include it on the “Wayfaring Stranger” project. Jody Miller concluded the project with a re-recording of her greatest hit, “Queen of The House,” the song that literally changed her life. Released in 1965, the song is based on Roger Miller’s monster #1 hit from early 1965, “King of the Road.” The song would garner Miller a Grammy Award and became her signature record that propelled her into Country Music, so it is very fitting that she ended her recording career by leaving her fans another version of this classic. The musicians included Michael Archer and Justin Trevino on bass, Deena Auderegg and Emily Gimble on piano, Justin Trevino on rhythm guitar, Charlie Walton on lead guitar, Jim Loessberg on pedal steel and drums, RJ Smith and Robert Weeks on fiddle and Jennifer McMullen and Jody Miller on harmony vocals. It was recorded at the Heart of Texas Recording Studio in Brady, Texas, and produced by Justin Trevino. The album liner notes include a heartfelt farewell message to Miller’s fans, as she knew this was to be her final recording project: “So now, I simply say, ‘thank you, my friends’ for allowing me, through the gift of song, to be a part of your lives for all these years.” “We felt privileged to work with Jody professionally for many years,” Heart of Texas Records President Tracy Pitcox said. “We were indeed honored that she chose Heart of Texas Records as the label to record her final project. She was the ultimate professional, and her remarkable career will forever be remembered and cherished by fans all over the world.” To order ’Wayfaring Stranger,’ visit heartoftexascountry.com or call (325) 597-1895. 24 August 1984, Queen performed @ Forest National in Brussels, Belgium Queen filmed parts of ‘Hammer To Fall’ during this show! The band kick off ‘The Works’ tour and this is the first stop. The tour will conclude in May 1985 in Japan According to the July '89 issue of Record Collector, Queen ran through about 40 songs during rehearsals. This list of songs rehearsed that didn't end up in the setlist comes from someone who worked on the tour: Great King Rat (longer version), Brighton Rock (full song), I'm In Love With My Car, Sweet Lady,
White Man, We Will Rock You (fast), Play The Game, Need Your Loving Tonight, Put Out The Fire, Las Palabras de Amor, Life Is Real (both Freddie solo piano and Freddie/Brian acoustic duet versions) The keyboardist for this tour (and also the '86 Magic tour) is session musician Spike Edney. He would also lend some vocals to many songs and play rhythm guitar in Hammer To Fall. He and Roger Taylor would form a band called "The Cross" in 1987 which spawned three albums, and he would return to Queen in the 21st century to play on the Queen + toursSpike was recruited in a very informal way by a Queen associate. He went to Munich for their first rehearsal in early August, wound up partying for most of the first night, and missed the first day's rehearsal. It later transpired that everyone else had. He recalls, "The next day, we all managed to get to it eventually, to the first rehearsal, and all the gear was set up. The stage was huge, and I thought "Oh well, here we go then" and we got to the first song , and what I'd forgotten was that they hadn't actually played together for two years. So they said, OK, let's try one of the new songs, I think it was Radio Ga Ga, and we started playing it, and course, I knew it, I'd been studying it for weeks. You know, 1,2,3,4 and we start and we get about a minute into the song and the whole thing collapses. And they all look at each other, you know, very sheepishly, and they say, "Anyone know how it goes?" and I say "well, actually, I know. I know how it goes" and they said "Ah". And so I started showing them the chords and everything and Fred looked at me and said "You don't know the words, do you?" and "Well, yeah I do actually" so then they all came round the piano and we spent the whole day just going through songs, and I thought, "I'm gonna be all right here, this'll be OK"!" The show started very late, as the band were still doing soundcheck when they were supposed to go on. Apparently over the previous week there were few occasions when all four band members actually showed up for rehearsal. Many songs (likely those listed above) never made the setlist, and soundcheck was an extensive cramming session, particularly for the older material that they hadn't played in years. Roger Taylor later reflected that this European tour was one of his favourites, and many fans cite the early Works setlist as their favourite ever played by the band. Three medleys are now played, two of which have revived many old songs: Killer Queen, Seven Seas Of Rhye, Keep Yourself Alive, Liar, Stone Cold Crazy and Great King Rat. Staying Power from Hot Space returns to the set, as does Sheer Heart Attack from News Of The World. Only half of Staying Power is played, and it runs into Dragon Attack, followed by an improvisation running into a more compact version of Now I'm Here compared to previous tours. Many people who attended shows on this tour recall Queen having a very heavy sound, especially on songs like Liar and Stone Cold Crazy. By 1984 they had gained a reputation as being one of the best live rock acts in the business. Six songs from The Works are performed each night, and the introduction tape is from the album track "Machines". After the heavy G chords are heard on the tape twice, the band walk on stage in the darkness to play the chords the third time, which leads into the brand new "Tear It Up". This is yet another effective opening to a Queen show, something they would perfect time and time again. I Want To Break Free is performed each night in 1984-85 as the first encore, with Freddie coming on stage sporting a pair of huge plastic breasts under a pink shirt. Part way through the song, he would remove the breasts and twirl them around for a while before finally throwing them into the audience. Some souvenir! As a result of this gag, Another One Bites The Dust has been moved from the encore to be earlier in the set. This tour showcases an incredible lighting rig and an overall setup mimics the movie Metropolis, from which scenes were used for the promo video of Radio Ga Ga last year. The huge wheels behind the stage (modelled after the ones on The Works album cover) rotate at mostly random times - usually because they are turned manually by various crew members such as Roger's tech Chris "Crystal" Taylor whenever they have a free moment (Freddie Mercury's assistant Peter Freestone told the tale in 2021). However, a crew member who worked on the tour recalls otherwise: "I do know local crew members were used on the UK shows and certainly (a number of) European gigs. The other thing is that Radio Ga Ga had a set piece with the cogs and lighting, using low ambient lighting and strobes to emphasise mechanical motion of the cogs during the instrumental break. Would Roger Taylor be happy with no one covering him/his kit during a show? Possibly Peter Freestone is remembering production rehearsals when any spare bodies might have been asked to operate the cogs?" During vocal improvisations on this tour, Freddie would often include bits of "Foolin' Around" and "Living On My Own" from his pending first solo album, which he had been working on during this period. Freddie now plays a Telecaster for Crazy Little Thing Called Love. It would remain like this through the Magic tour. The band no longer bring a gong with them on the road. Roger now does a cymbal roll at the end of Bohemian Rhapsody. A fan recalls hearing the band running through Tear It Up whilst queuing up to enter the venue. Freddie's voice is in superb shape for this show, but it will quickly weaken as the tour progresses. As incredible as Freddie Mercury was, he certainly did not take care of his voice at times, especially in the mid-80s. After a couple years of heavy smoking, Freddie's voice now sounds a lot deeper and raspier overall. Before It's A Hard Life, Freddie says, "I think tonight we're gonna do songs from just about every album that we've ever made. You heard some very early stuff from the first album. Right now I think we're gonna do something very new, and we'll see what you think of it." The band sound very tight on this opening night of the tour, with the only exception being the rough transition from Stone Cold Crazy to Great King Rat. The keyboard and guitar solos are integrated together for the first few shows of the tour, during which Brian plays a few bits from Machines. Spike Edney uses his vocoder (a Roland VP-330) for the "machines" and "back to humans" lines heard throughout the tour during this spot (he would use his vocoder for the "radio" lines in Radio Ga Ga as well). After this segment, Brian then gets a few minutes to play on his own as usual. Parts of the promo video for Hammer To Fall were filmed during this show. Claims from some (even official) sources state that Freddie invited the audience back for (what would actually be "additional"). Here is all that Freddie had to say before the song: "This next song we're gonna use in our next video. So everybody just go mad and maybe later you'll see one of you guys inside the video one day. Oh, just go crazy, take your clothes off. It's called Hammer To Fall." After the song, he simply says, "Good night, you guys!" as that was the last song of the set. Here is a fan's recollection: "On the night of the gig, there was a camera mounted on an arm that would swing over the front rows of the audience during a few songs. These audience shots were taken during Tie Your Mother Down, Radio Ga Ga, and Hammer To Fall itself. I guess they also had a camera up in the box at the back of the hall [as there are a few shots of both the audience and the band]. I don't remember any cameras onstage during the gig - just the one mounted on the arm." The Dutch fan club invited only about twenty of its members to attend the video shoot the next day. They were instructed by a roadie to sit quietly on a chair and not to move or approach the band members. After a few hours, Brian came over and had a chat with them, checking to see if they were enjoying themselves and if they were hungry. He then promptly ordered them some take-out! The last photo is from the autumn 1984 Queen fan club magazine. Brian is seen with a watchful eye over the proceedings. Tour manager Gerry Stickells and his wife are also in the shot.Source: Queen Live

Queen live at Slane Castle in Slane, Ireland - July 5, 1986 (Part-1)
(x)
Nearly 100,000 people poured into the grounds (and plenty without tickets) starting when the gates opened at 9am - a full nine hours before Queen were due to appear, and four hours even before the first supporting group was due on stage. Some brave souls came up the River Boyne in canoes, trying to get in the back way! With plenty of people admitting themselves into the show like this, it's impossible to calculate an accurate attendance for the gig. But the paid attendence of 92,000 was the largest for a show in Slane to date; even bigger than Bruce Springsteen's concert the previous year.
A fan recalls there wasn't much atmosphere to begin with because the show began and ended in daylight, due to a lack of lighting on the Slane site. Plenty of people in the audience got drunk and, combined with the steady rainfall, it led to some problems all afternoon. It began with various objects being thrown at the opening acts. Suzanna Hoffs of The Bangles said at one point, "We're sorry you're getting wet. We are too, but at least you can't get electrocuted!"
Sam Coates was in the audience and recalls, "One thing I clearly remember was a guy getting on stage and running at Freddie. Freddie very cool; he put his arm around him and walked him down the steps and led him to the security staff who escorted him off-stage." Around this point he tapped a security guy on the shoulder and told him, "This is your job."
Queen's set was recorded by the band on a mobile 24 track studio. Someone staggered past the equipment at the end of Seven Seas Of Rhye, pulling out a cable. At this same moment, the band stopped playing due to a fight among some drunken people in the audience. Freddie has a stern word with the trouble-makers, transcribed here in full:
"Hey! Will you guys stop this shit? Just stop it over here, okay? Will you calm down? Otherwise we're not gonna do the show! You guys are ruining it for the people out there, okay? Everybody stand up and move back a bit, come on." He then asks someone else if they're okay, and continues. "Just calm down a bit. This is stupid. We don't like it like this." He then seems to address the bouncers, hoping to get some people ejected (either that, or some people got hurt and needed attention): "We have to take care of them now." He follows with a vocal exchange with the audience, hoping to improve the atmosphere. They skip the bit of Liar, and Brian leads the band into Tear It Up.
Freddie gives his usual rumour speech before Who Wants To Live Forever, and adds, "I want you people to be the first to know we're not splitting up. We'll always be together." At this point, he's trying anything to lighten up the chaotic atmosphere. "This is a new song for us to do, and we'd like to do it especially for you, but why don't you just calm down, okay?" He then pleads, "Can you make this a peaceful event, huh? Please give it a try!"
After the impromptu, the band play their longest version of Gimme Some Lovin' followed by a brief improv of Keep Yourself Alive - the last live reference to the song. Then in his solo spot Brian plays a couple verses of Danny Boy.
Before Love Of My Life, Brian says, "It's good to be back in Dublin. It turned out alright after all." He wouldn't be feeling this way for much longer, as he is later hit by a beer can and as a result he almost refuses to play the encore - the band have to talk him into it. He later said this particular moment was his worst ever concert experience. "It was certainly more chaotic than normal," he reflected on another occasion, adding that some crowd members tried to force their way backstage. Roger later recalled how he had "never seen so many people consume so much alcohol."
Before Crazy Little Thing Called Love, Freddie fittingly says, "This song is dedicated to anybody who doesn't think he's crazy tonight."
To speed things up, there is no second encore break between Radio Ga Ga and We Will Rock You. Being in Ireland, Freddie wisely doesn't come out with a British flag for the latter.
Like in 1984, God Save The Queen isn't played as the band leave the stage, nor does Freddie dress up as the Queen, both measures taken so as not to upset (roughly half) of the audience. He did, however, come on stage at the beginning of the show with the crown (as seen in pics 4 and 33), which may have contributed to the anxiety of some audience members close to the stage.
About an hour of the show was filmed from the audience. The first segment is quite distant, but the filmer made his way to near the stage by mid-show, and captured the atmosphere very well.
Some footage from this show (mostly of One Vision) was shown on a TV news report the next day.
In 1999, some of this footage was shown on "Reeling In The Years" (named after the Steely Dan classic), a show on the Irish TV station RTE 1 that recalls past (often music-related) events in Ireland.
There was also a TV report with DJ/television presenter Dave Fanning confronting people selling unofficial Queen merchandise.
Here are a few revealing reviews and write-ups surrounding the show, submitted by Mark Bowles: 1 2 3 4 5
When asked about the gig in a 2013 interview, Roger recalls, "That one was pretty hairy, from what I remember. I mean really hairy. The size of the crowd was incredible. There was so much mud and drunkenness. Freddie stopped the show at one point. People had been there for hours and dehydrated from drinking. Well, it's rock 'n' roll, isn't it?"

HELLO apparently July 28th is the release date for Down to Earth therefore in honor of its 42nd birthday I wanna do a ranking of all the songs based on my personal preference of course.
(I’m only doing songs from the original studio release sorry no Bad Girl or Weiss Heim but they’re both sexy ;))
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lwCsMQWkN3g
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o7YOM4gx3RE (spark don’t mean a fire aka the alternate version don’t worry it’s beautiful)
8. No Time To Lose: Starting off this list we’ve got the second song off this record and it isn’t bad in anyway. In fact, it’s very upbeat and energetic, especially with Graham’s absolutely stunning vocals. However, compared to the rest of the list I feel it falls just a bit short. The lyrics themselves are actually pretty dark looking at them with examples such as, “It ain’t no lie, you’re hurting and you don’t know why.” Don’t know what Roger or Ritchie were going through but damn, anyway, musically the song is also very strong. The guitar riff is addicting but I feel it’s the combination of, again, Graham’s vocals and Cozy’s monstrous drumming that gives this song so much energy. Not bad at all from a song that’s at the bottom of a list.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1P17ct4e5OE
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_v0bDfZytwk (Russ Ballard version, it’s really good)
7. Since You’ve Been Gone: Listen, I know many may judge this choice but I didn’t put this song at the bottom because of one, the sentimental value it has, and two, it’s not a bad song at all. Okay, it’s not the best as well but Russ Ballard made a beautiful song about heartbreak that is only made greater by this glorious lineup. I’ve actually listened to Ballard’s originally version and while it isn’t bad, I feel that Graham really helped cement this song and really put Rainbow on the charts. I especially enjoy the interlude section that drops into a sweet ballad type tone before dropping back into the chorus. Graham’s versatile vocals are well-equipped to amplify this song to a new level and not only that but without this song I probably would have never started listening to Rainbow. Although very commercialized and maybe too light to many, this song holds a special place in my heart and I do love it dearly.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WmQBKq0d_-I (Cozy Powell mix, yes it’s exactly what you’d think it would sound like if the drummer was the producer)
6. All Night Long: The second real commercialized song on this album and honestly the last. However, where it differs from the other is that this song still has big traces of that hard rock attitude that Rainbow had emerged into. That simple yet beautiful riff that gets stuck in your head, Cozy’s powerful drumming, Graham’s powerhouse vocals, I mean what else do you really want from a song. Just from that opening riff you feel that rush of just pure hard rock energy shiver through your body. It really is just a fun hard rock song that, although may not be anything too complex, isn’t bad at all.

5. Danger Zone: Danger Zone always stood out to me as a very interesting and different song. Don is absolutely phenomenal in this song, especially his keyboard solo which Ritchie follows up upon to make a beautiful instrumental section. I’d be remiss to not mention Graham who hits at some of his highest parts here. This song really showed off the prowess of his full vocal abilities, hitting high notes with all the strength you’d expect from a hard rock singer. The actual lyrics of the song are quite beautiful as well I believe. Parts such as, “Don’t understand when you’re looking for a dame but it’s only a heartbreak away. And you’ll learn, faking has no return.” Really suspecting some mental instability from either Roger or Ritchie at this point...
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O8FcrH1lDeY
4. Eyes of the World: Many may be surprised why this song isn’t higher up the list but trust me, I have good reasons. Eyes of the World is definitely a highlight piece in this album and really is a final goodbye to the Dio era of Rainbow. The subject manner is very of that era and really feels like it could have been sung by Ronnie. I think to many this song helped alleviate the fears that Rainbow had gone fully vapid with it’s material (though we’ll see how that sentiment drags on throughout the next few years) Don Airey truly deserves the limelight here for that incredible keyboard intro that just sucks you into that dark world of evil. He really makes this song something truly special. Cozy Powell is phenomenal throughout all these tracks but especially in this track where he’s at his home environment and just listen to the interludes between the chorus and verse, just incredible. Then to our man of the hour, Graham Bonnet, he just absolutely kills it here. He puts so much passion and emotion into the vocals that I find it strange how anyone could possibly still doubt him as a suitable vocalist for the band. Ritchie’s solo here as well is probably one of my favorites off of this album just really makes this song something truly special. I often like to compare this piece to the Gates of Babylon or Tarot Woman to Down to Earth with an incredible keyboard intro and other-wordly themes of evil and darkness that make it a classic Rainbow tune.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iU__fm6QFvk
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lzQZoOvzzNo (Ain’t A Lot of Love In the Heart of Me, it’s brilliant and honestly parts are somewhat better than the final version lol)
3. Love’s No Friend: I remember reading an article that talked about this song being Rainbow’s Mistreated. That description always had stayed with me and while I partially agree with the statement, I also think this song is very different from the former. Yes, both deal with heartbreak and emanates a grandiose sense of grievance from that sentiment however it differs in how that sentiment is delivered. Mistreated, as stated by Blackmore, is really just a guitar song. The relies both on David’s great bluesy voice that can conceive that anguish in his voice like no other vocalist can (love ya Dave) and Blackmore’s just heart-wrenching solo at the end which is probably one of the most emotional guitar solos I’ve ever heard. With Love’s No Friend I find that it’s more of a complete package having all elements of the band contribute to the piece. Not that but the lyrics are much more refined in this song. I often find Mistreated’s lyrics very stale and boring since they’re basically just “I’ve been mistreated, I’ve been abused,” and the only reason they get away with that is because of David’s incredible vocal performances. Trust me, Graham’s an incredible performer as well but these lyrics have much more substance to them and I feel just stands taller as a complete song. Speaking of Graham, this is probably his strongest performance in the album. You know what part I’m talking about if you’ve listened to this song but THAT part is just wow, that solidified him as one of my favorite vocalists of all time. The entire song is really just a masterpiece and really just stands as one of the best Rainbow tunes in my opinion.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F1LvViMLKNo
2. Makin’ Love - Oh this song, how can I express my love for this song in ways that I haven’t already before. Well if you didn’t know before, I put this as #5 on my top 5 Rainbow tunes and I still stick to it. Let me just say, this is one of my favorite intros to any songs ever. Don Airey is just magical in this entire album (and his entire career) but he especially shines here. The simple yet beautiful little touches he adds throughout this song really makes it so much more profound. That, once again, addicting Blackmore riff that just goes on throughout the song making the listener feel as if they’re going through a lonely yet sentimental walk down memory lane. It kind of almost reminds me of one of my favorite Rick Springfield songs, Written In Rock, in that manner. I guess I’m just a sucker for a pretty love ballad but man does Graham make it even better. The man just had the perfect voice for these types of songs (please listen to Will You Be Home Tonight as an example) and he’s able to convey those vulnerable tones in his voice while maintaining that strong hard rock attitude like I’ve seen no other singer be able to. I didn’t even mention the sudden shift during the pre-chorus that’s complimented with Cozy’s ferocious cymbal playing. Overall, I’m just a sucker for a nice love song.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mRLHHftZEJA
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7eRLQyXzZ1Y (the live Alcatrazz version because Yngwie is a cocky little piece of work and gets his guitar unplugged for 1 minute of the song, Graham is a beast here)
1. Lost In Hollywood - The magnum opus, probably not only the greatest Rainbow song but one of the greatest songs ever written and produced. I’ve already gone into detail about this song in my overall album review but just on first listening you can definitely tell that this song is something else. The energy, the tempo, is almost seems rushing like they’re running out of time on the record to give everything they wanted to show to the listener. The lyrics sort of remind me of Super Trouper (the Deep Purple one okay) if Super Trouper was an overdramatic and grandiose love ballad. It’s obvious that the song is talking about the overbearing nature of becoming famous and the sacrifices one has to make to get to the mantle. One of my favorite song lyrics of all time perfectly exemplify this through, “I’m gonna lose control, if I’ve been losing you to pay for rock and roll.” They’re lost in Hollywood, not just the actual place but the lifestyle that befits every star. I still think that Super Trouper as a song is a more profound piece on the effects of stardom as a whole but this song as well is beautifully written to talk about those themes in maybe not so personal manners. The song really is just a beautiful showcase of the talents that were the Mark 4 lineup of Rainbow and stands in my eyes as one of the finest pieces of music ever created.
Yeah, I’ve probably over exaggerated enough. Once again, I’m very biased here but I’m also speaking with my own tastes and experiences in mind. Despite the constant lineup changes, Blackmore always seems to find the most top-notch musicians and I believe this lineup truly exemplified that. It’s a shame that they couldn’t continue on but at least we got this album as a glorious reminder of what 5 musicians can do with enough talent and probably alcohol.
Also, the hallmark of all live performances: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I5VPzJlUKVc
#rainbow#rainbow band#ritchie blackmore#cozy powell#don airey#roger glover#graham bonnet#well it's not july 28th anymore#i love this lineup dearly#graham is my ichibansan#look forward to the 28 page thesis on why graham bonnet was the best rainbow vocalist up next

Jon Lord, Deep Purple
Original article by Lee Marlow which was first printed in the Leicester Mercury in July, 2000.
-
You join us in the hallway of Jon Lord's sprawling Henley-on-Thames home.
Him, Leicester born, millionaire keyboard maestro with rock legends Deep Purple and Whitesnake; me, Leicester-born over-eager hack with a headful of daft questions he's answered a thousand times before.
Holding out a hand, Mr Lord, the David Niven of rock 'n' roll, greets me like a long-lost friend.
Grey stubble frames his face and a head full of slate grey hair is tied neatly in a pony tail.
"Good to see you... find it all right?... blah... terrible weather again isn't it... blah... Yes, it is nice round here isn't it... George Harrison lives just down the road... blah... we're touring in August... blah... on the road in South America..."
He hardly stops to draw breath as we settle in the cream lounge.
I can't help but notice the luxurious off-white carpet is so plush that I can trace my footsteps from the oak door to the immense sofa and, in the corner, a small cinema screen masquerades as a TV.
Life has been kind to Jon Lord.
He's sold millions of records and, erm, "rocked" the biggest audiences the world over – from the 200,000 fans at the California Jam in the mid-1970s to last year's hybrid Royal Albert Hall gig featuring Deep Purple and the London Symphony Orchestra.
Purple, his mainstay band of the past four decades, are about to hit the road again.
Lord admits that after all this time it's hard to resist.
"I don't need to do this anymore," he says, "but it is immense fun.
''I do see a time when we'll have to call it a day, of course, but when? I know I can't do it when I'm 90, but..."
It's all a long way from life at 120 Averill Road, where Mr Lord senior packed socks by day and played sax by night and where the young Lord enjoyed "a perfect childhood," roaming through the nearby countryside with his grubby-faced pals.
An after-school diet of piano lessons, homework and bike riding, however, left a teenage Lord facing an extra year at Wyggeston School.
"I just wanted to play with my friends," he says. "But it was always homework and piano lessons. Something had to give – and it was usually homework."
After being sacked from his first two jobs in Leicester, Lord left for London to study acting and played roll-out-the-barrel-style standards in smoky pubs to pay his rent.
Despite his best intentions, Lord's hopes of becoming an actor were overtaken by his desire to play rock 'n' roll and by the mid-60s, he'd been roped in to play keyboards on The Kinks' You Really Got Me.
"All I did was plink, plink, plink," he laughs. "It wasn't hard."
But from there, Lord and his trusty Hammond organ didn't look back.
He had a top 10 hit with Let's Go To San Francisco with The Flowerpot Men and was pocketing the princely sum of £60 a week.
Lord's future was bright. In fact, his future was Purple.
The group formed in 1968 and had a smash hit in the US with Hush at the end of the year. Three decades later, Kula Shaker took the same song to No 1 in the UK charts. ("Good version as well," says Jon, "if a bit too fast.'')
Purple opened for Eric Clapton's Cream in the States, but after five storming gigs they were taken off the tour as the energised Purple boys blew Slowhand's shambolic drug-addled trio off stage.
"We got on well with them. They had no idea we were to be taken off the tour – they were too stoned!" recalls Jon.
Back home, Purple instigated the first of many line-up changes, welcoming new singer Ian Gillan and bass player Roger Glover – a switch which heralded a new era for Purple and, with it, British rock.
"We knew we had something. It was just so exciting. We used to practice every afternoon and then gig every night."
Gillan brought more than great vocals to the band – his jet-black long hair and charisma attracted the ladies as well.
"There were plenty of groupies at that stage," smiles Lord.
And?
"Well, let's just say if you give a young lad a bit of money and untroubled access to nubile young women – it's not a bad life is it?"
Even at the wrong side of 50, Gillan, it appears, still has a certain charm with the opposite sex. Lord and Gillan were recently interviewed by former Watchdog beauty Alice Beer for the BBC1 religious show H&E.
"I might as well not have been there," smiles Lord. "She was completely taken by Gillan. And after the show they left together and went for a drink. No, I don't know what happened!"
The first five years of the 1970s saw Deep Purple trapped in a perpetual album-tour-album loop. The shows were sold out and the albums – In Rock, Fireball, Machine Head, Made In Japan, Who Do We Think We Are? – all went platinum.
They made a wodge of money, concedes Jon, but their managers made more.
Yet despite the excess (they also had their own plane, naturally), Lord steered clear of drugs.
"I can say hand-on-heart we were never really a drug band. My Dad bought me my first pint and I was still very much a lad from Leicester, you know.
"I experimented with drugs, of course I did. I smoked grass, but it left me sitting in a corner, introspective and giggling to myself.
"I had a brief flirtation with cocaine in the late 1970s but, to be honest, I don't really like being out of control."
The drugs came later. American Tommy Bolin, drafted in to replace the increasingly moody and erratic guitarist Ritchie Blackmore, succumbed to a long-term heroin habit in 1976 and Lord still recalls the time a cocaine dealer chased bassist Glenn Hughes on to the band's private plane, demanding $3,000.
By 1976, the writing was on the wall for Purple and its elaborate brand of rock music. Punk was the new king.
Lord retreated to the States for two years. But former Purple leader David Coverdale was looking for someone to become the new ivory tinkler in his new outfit, Whitesnake, and Lord fitted the bill.
"He wouldn't take no for an answer. I harboured no ambition to be Whitesnake's keyboard player, but he was very, very insistent."
Persuasive Coverdale might have been, but financially generous he certainly wasn't.
"I was in Whitesnake from 1978 to 1983 and he paid me abysmally! I complained regularly and he'd say 'Ok, leave it with me', but it never changed.
"It was a good laugh – that was the main reason I stayed in the band. It was ironic that in the middle of this punk revolution we were playing white R&B and selling out tours."
Strangely, considering the times, Whitesnake's brand of sexist crab-paced rock was a hit.
They were the biggest-grossing tour band in Europe by 1981. But Coverdale – secretly nicknamed Elsie by the band because of his louche on-stage antics and some of his cheesy lyrics – wanted success in America. At all costs.
"It was all style over substance towards the end," sighs Lord. "The band lost its heart. It was just about posing."
The music might have lost its soul, but Whitesnake – complete with a new band of poodle-permed hired hands in black spandex and glitter jackets – went on to sell 17 million albums in 1987.
Lord, meanwhile, had answered the call to reform Deep Purple.
"The critics said Purple getting back together was about money. It was never about money," says Lord. "It was exciting for us and the fans when we got back together."
And that's where he's been ever since. In truth, the reformed band never quite graced the same artistic heights they reached in their heyday, but on the concert circuit they're still capable of selling out a Wembley Arena or NEC.
"I don't enjoy touring in the way I used to, but those two hours on stage make up for it.
''The day I can't open that door and look forward to it is the day I say, 'Thank you very much and goodnight'."
And that's about it. Interview over. I've got more daft questions but, crikey, I've been here for more than three hours and he needs to finish a musical extravaganza he's writing for the local church. Phew, rock 'n'roll.
"Take care driving back," he says, "and give my love to Leicester."
#brb im crying#that jon composed and performed songs for his local church has always been my fav#those church grannies must have been jamming like crazy#jon lord#deep purple

Pete Townshend’s Classic Quadrophenia
Pete will reprise his roles at the live world premiere at the Royal Albert Hall in London on the 5th of July 2015, alongside the RPO, Ziegler, Boe and other star guests and then at the Metropolitan Opera in New York City on November 8th.
The new symphonised version of Quadrophenia, an album originally released by The Who in 1973, was orchestrated by Rachel Fuller, a professional composer, orchestrator and singer-songwriter in her own right and also the partner of Pete Townshend.
This project is the latest chapter in Pete Townshends lifelong mission to break the three-minute mold of the traditional pop song and take rock music to a higher artistic level. In the 1960s he defined the concept of the rock opera with Tommy, taking it a stage further with Quadrophenia.
Pete began work on the project as part of his plan to leave a legacy of all his work arranged for orchestra as sheet music, for future generations to enjoy. Pete hopes the new work will go on to become a regular part of the orchestral repertoire and boost attendance at classical concerts.
Alfie Boe, who sings the parts originally sung by Roger Daltrey, was also born in 1973 but has been listening to Quadrophenia for years. Its in my blood. I grew up on rock music and always had that fantasy of being a rock singer before I trained as an opera singer. Ive always thought the classical voice can lend itself to this type of repertoire. Its harder than opera, but thrilling to sing. The music is so full of excitement, positivity and strength I wouldnt separate it from a symphony by Beethoven or Mozart - Alfie Boe.

On December 16th 2001 singer/songwriter Stuart Adamson took his own life.......
Stuart's parents, expats, lived in Manchester when their boy was born and moved home to Fife when he was just four, don't anyone fuckin dare tell me he wasn't Scottish! The family settled in Crossgate on the outskirts of Dunfermline.
Adamson's father was in the fishing industry and travelled the world. He encouraged Stuart to read literature, and both parents shared an interest in folk music, Fife born author Ian Rankin attended Beath High School, two years beneath Adamson, and would later become a big fan.
Stuart founded his first band, Tattoo, in 1976 after seeing The Damned in Edinburgh, a year later he formed Skids and recruited Crosshill lad Ian Jobson, The legendary John Peel plugged them on his Radio 1 show which led them to playing support to the likes of the Clash and The Stranglers and a record deal with Virgin. Stuart walked out on the group just as they were about to make it big, for a time he rejoined the band for a tour to promote their album Scared to Dance.
Hooking up with guitarist and long-time friend Bruce Watson, Adamson formed Big Country, the line-up also featured, on keyboards, Peter Wishart, later of Gaelic rockers Runrig, and now a polititian. Originally they experimented with the synthiser sounds that were all the rage then, The Human League were riding high in the charts, but Adamson wanted something more traditional and the synth sounds made way for the guitar sound that was a unique sound for the band and that became their trademark sound. Adamson said later....“Music used to be a thing where working people got together on a Saturday night and played some songs. Someone’d play the guitar or the fiddle or an accordion. No bastard’d played the synthesiser.”
They roped in Jam drummer Rick Buckler on some demos which were hawked around a number of recording labels unsuccessfully, a support slot with Alice Cooper went disastrously too, the band’s half-baked sound grating on an audience looking for glam-metal thrills. By the second night of the tour they were sacked.
Their manager Grant Scott called in Adamson and convinced him the band needed a shake up, out went Wishart, in came in came bassist Tony Butler and drummer Mark Brzezinski, who had just finished an album with Pete Townsend of The Who. Butler, a much respected bass player had also played with Townsend, Roger Daltry and The Pretenders. The final link in the chain that brought them success was when they were signed by Phonogram records, who appointed Steve Lillywhite to produce them, Lillyywhite had just finished work on U2's breakthrough album War and had previously worked with Siouxsie And The Banshees, the Psychedelic Furs and XTC.
Initially contracted to just do a single, the sessions for Fields Of Fire produced not only that classic song, but gave birth to the Big Country sound and inspired a new bout of songwriting from Adamson, the band had it all in front of them. At the heart of it all was Adamson, the punk rocker with the virtuoso talent. He used to say, ‘Don’t call me a musician. I’m a songwriter, guitarist, singer, but muso – I don’t like that tag’,” but musician he was.
The music of their album The Crossing was epic and inspirational, as big as the glens and as loud as a cavalry charge, this was rock music yes, but not the type played by the likes of Led Zeppelin or AC/DC, this had a Scottish spin. The crowd-friendly skirling guitars, big beats and uplifting calls to arms were all great, but The Crossing also tone the sound down with the, in my own humble opinion, brilliant Chance, which Lillywhite describes as a “a beautiful, depressive song,” Released in July 1983, The Crossing went on to sell over two million copies worldwide.
Their follow up album Steeltown hit number one in the UK and hit gold status in sales, another two top ten albums followed, but all the time Stuart Adamson was fighting his demons.Although sales were good the music press started to turn on them, Steeltown was collection of songs born out of the political landscape of the 80's - the Falklands war, unemployment, tales of people trapped by circumstance and crushed by forces outside their control, it wasn’t what the press wanted to hear, the dour Scotsman. In the eyes of the music press, the band were pompous and dreary and so not cool, the dour Scotsman, in the eyes of the music press, were a pompous band and dreary and so not cool.
1985 took the pressure of Stuart a little, they were signed to score the film, The Scottish classic, Restless Natives, the instrumental score freeing him from that "dour Scotsman" tag. The bands manager Grant tells of Stuart leaving the band, but not, relentlessly on the road, doing press, radio, TV and in the studio and not at home as much as he would have liked. He was also hitting the booze big time.Unable, at the time to get a definitive answer from Stuart on the bands future they missed out on a spot at Live Aid, having previously featured on the single Do they know it's Christmas.
Come 1988 they recorded Peace In Our Time, a more mellow Middle of the Road album, which was an attempt at cracking the US market, it bombed there and the band looked east, playing Russia’s first international rock festival in August ’88 (Grant: “My pitch to him was: Bono – Amnesty International. It only added to the music press attitude that they had lost their way and were "self-important, pompous do-gooders."
After Russia, Stuart Adamson decided to split the band. They reformed in 91, recording No Place Like Home, it was the first of their albums that failed to reach the UK top 20. The music of the 90's didn't have a place for Big Country, the ensuing albums didn't dent the top 40, it felt like they were just going through the motions.
There was a small glimmer of hope when their single Fragile Thing looked like hitting the top 40, but some bizarre wrangle with the chart compilers about the CD singles cover having "too many folds in it" meant it was disqualified and languished at 69, it would have given them a springboard to punt their new album....... Stuart had by then moved to Nashville and the songs he was crafting reflected the country music scene that immerse the place. He had kicked the drink for a while but reckoned he was happy in Nashville and could start boozing again. In October 2000 Big Country played their last gig in Kuala Lumpar, Malaysia. Adamson almost missed it when, drunk, he got on the wrong plane. The gig was a disaster. Butler later said “We were a karaoke version of what we were,” Butler told the band they should take a break for a couple of years, he didn't think it was helping Adamson's drink problem carrying on. Various people spoke about the next two years, phone calls from concerned friends, Adamson said in one call from Steve Lillywhite that..."I’ve worked it out, I really can’t drink, I mustn’t drink, I’m happy now not drinking…’” There was talk of a collaboration, with amongst other the subject of Saturday's post, Mike Scott and other singers a sort of British Crosby Stills and Nash. On November 15, 2001, Adamson left a bar in Atlanta, Georgia. His marriage to his second wife falling apart, he was also facing a drink-driving charge that could have led to jail time. He fell off the wagon, hard. He flew back to Nashville where, instead of going home, he stayed in various hotels. Grant hired a private detective to find him – to no avail. “He drunk solidly for eight weeks in hotels,” says the manager, “and every time we found out where he was he’d just checked out for another one.” On December 4, he flew to Hawaii and checked into a hotel near Honolulu Airport where he requested the delivery of three bottles of wine to his room each day. He never left the room. On December 16, he was found by security hanging from a clothes rail. No suicide note was ever found. He was 43. Putting this post together has been difficult for me, I fight my own demons every day, and could easily fall into a life of constant boozing, I do however manage just to hold things together. Adamson's music was a big part of my formative years and I still listen to his songs regularly, some with tears in my eyes, like this one, the aforementioned Fragile Thing, the lyric tells a story much like my own and I can empathise with him through this tune......... Thank you ma'am for asking Yes I'm on my own I guess it's kind of obvious I'm eating here aloneI'm grateful for the company Tired of talking to myself Don't you look into my eyes You might see someone else
If you decide to watch/listen to the track, you might recognise a certain Scottish female singer adding her vocals to the song......
If I have made any mistakes of mispelled anything here please don't tell me know, leave it be, like Stuart Adamson and myself, it is flawed.

Dr. Teeth and the Electric Mayhem are the house band on The Muppet Show. They mostly stick to rock music, but they're capable of playing other styles, including jazz and (unwillingly) classical. Although Dr. Teeth is the leader, he is not the only one to provide lead vocals. Floyd Pepper is often a lead singer on songs, and Janice is lead singer on a handful of songs.
They drive around in a brightly-painted bus with psychedelic swirls and colors.
In an edition of Ask Henson.com, Karen Falk responded to a question about the origins of the Mayhem band:
“Music was always an important part of Jim Henson's work. He had a strong interest in all types and had an eclectic record library. When he began writing proposals and creating concepts for The Muppet Show in the late 1960s, they always included a house band that was to appear in each episode. At that time, Jim had a strong interest in the counter-culture movement (as evidenced by his experimental film Youth '68) and sought to reflect that in the composition of the band. One proposal from about 1970 says that the band would, "...do songs like "Sunshine" from Hair. In fact, they are all dressed to out-hair the Hair cast."
The Electric Mayhem as we know it first appeared in 1975 on the Muppet Show pilot Sex and Violence. A page of ideas for the show written by Jim describes the band this way: "Rock act - far-out, elaborate weird equipment, big amps...".”

It’s a rare singer-songwriter who can just give away undeniable hits like “Nothing Compares 2 U,” “Manic Monday” and “The Glamorous Life” to other artists, but that’s exactly what Prince did throughout his 40-year career.
And on his birthday, June 7, the late artist’s estate, in partnership with Warner Bros. Records and Tidal, will release “Originals,” a 15-track album featuring 14 previously unreleased recordings by Prince of such songs. The tracks were selected collaboratively by Troy Carter, on behalf of The Prince Estate, and Jay-Z.
Starting June 7, “Originals” will stream exclusively on Tidal for 14 days. The announcement notes, “In the spirit of sharing Prince’s music with his fans as he wanted, the album will be available to stream in Master quality via Tidal’s HiFi subscription tier. Members will be able to hear the recordings just as the Artist intended the tracks to sound.” On June 21, Warner Bros. will release the recordings, sourced directly from Prince’s archive of “Vault” recordings, via all download and streaming partners and physically on CD, while 180 gram 2LP and limited edition Deluxe CD+2LP formats will follow on July 19th. (Pre-order the album here.)Prince was a monumentally prolific artist and by the mid-1980s, in addition to releasing nine of his most commercially successful albums, he also wrote and recorded many dozens of songs for proteges The Time, Vanity 6, Sheila E., Apollonia 6, Jill Jones, the Family, and Mazarati. Often, Prince’s original demo recordings would be used as master takes on their albums, with only minor alterations to the instrumentation and a replacement of the vocal tracks. Other times, artists would rely on his demos to guide them through their own recording process, with Prince’s initial take informing their final version of his song.“Originals” reveals the origins of these songs — many of which were substantial hits — along with deeper album cuts such as Vanity 6’s “Make-Up,” Jill Jones’s “Baby, You’re a Trip,” and Kenny Rogers’ “You’re My Love.” The only previously released song is Prince’s original 1984 version of “Nothing Compares 2 U,” which was released in 2018 as a standalone single (and as a stellar live duet with Rosie Gaines in 1993). The song was originally released in 1985 by The Family, and made into an unforgettable No. 1 single by Sinead O’Connor five years later.

The (secondary) Bond theme.
Over the years James Bond has not only become a classic icon of British literature and cinema but he has also been a gateway for musicians to be remembered by performing the themes to the films. Good or bad, each Bond theme is recognized in their distinction of being cinematic, orchestral, while mixing the sound developed by each artist, but the road to deciding the theme is not always easy, there is a string of politics and at times the artist chosen is not the only one to submit a piece of music.
The first Bond theme was simply titled “James Bond Theme” and was written and performed by the Monty Norman Orchestra, secondary songs were used but mostly as background music particular to a scene on screen. The second film, From Russia With Love, was the first Bond film to have a song with the title theme. Sung by Matt Munro, this was used in the film and end credits, but is still credited on all anniversary collections as the official theme to the film.
The first time a Bond theme was sung in the opening credits was in the third Bond film, Goldfinger. Originally to be sung by Anthony Newly, who co-wrote the song with John Barry and Leslie Bricusse. Upon reflection the three felt a woman’s voice would suit the tone better, and thus Shirley Bassey (Barry’s partner at the time) was selected as the vocalist.
A year later a fourth Bond film was commissioned and the song “Mr. Kiss Kiss Bang Bang” was recorded as the main theme. Dionne Warwick first recorded the song, but the producers were not impressed with her vocals on the track. Shirley Bassey was asked to re-record the song, but she kept mispronouncing the title, rather singing “Mr. Kiss Kiss Bam Bam”. John Barry felt a song with the film’s title was more sellable and wrote the track with Tom Jones in mind to sing. Barry placed the original Dionne Warwick theme at the end credits, however Bassey furious her version was not used sued the producers. Both versions of the song remained unreleased until the 1990s.
This is the first instance of a rejected Bond theme in film. Johnny Cash also recorded a rejected theme for Thunderball in his own style but this was not released until after his death.
Many other artists over the years tried submitting themes for the Bond franchise without any consideration. Alice Cooper was deemed “not suitable” for a 007 film with his version of “The Man with the Golden Gun”. Blondie was asked to record “For Your Eyes Only” but was displeased that Eon Productions did not want to use their recorded song and rather insisted on the one that was written for them. The band rejected this theme and it went to Sheena Easton.
In a similar story, Ace of Base were the original commissioned band to perform the GoldenEye theme, however they only got to the demo stage before creative differences had them quitting, which lead The Edge and Bono writing the new theme for Tina Turner.
Unknown by some is that some finished themes for the Bond films were scrapped last minute and replaced by something Eon Productions felt would be more commercially appealing. The first instance of this was for the film You Only Live Twice where singer Julie Rogers performed the original written theme. This was scrapped without her knowledge at the last minute and it was re-written and recorded with Nancy Sinatra. A similar situation happened to Radiohead for the film Spectre. They submitted an unreleased track from 1997 titled “Man of War” for the film’s soundtrack. Producers loved the song but were reluctant to use it as it would not be eligible for award nominations. They asked the band to compose a new theme. Radiohead jumped at the chance, putting recording sessions for their album “A Moon Shaped Pool” on hold. The result was a beautifully slow and melancholy song that was ultimately rejected due to being (you guessed it) too slow and melancholy. They have since said they felt the experience was a waste of their time.
Secondary themes are also prevalent in James Bond music. Her Majesty’s Secret Service was a return to an instrumental theme, as the title was too long to place in a song. Louis Armstrong sang the secondary theme which was used more frequently throughout the film. Secondary themes have also originally started as the original theme but moved due to commercializing on the talent of newer artists. The Pretenders had contributed several songs to the soundtrack for The Living Daylights. Their song “Where Has Everybody Gone” was intended to be the film’s theme, however during production the producers felt they needed a song that was in the same vein as the popular theme “A View to a Kill” by Duran Duran. The Pretenders song was moved to a secondary theme and Swedish band A-ha was hired in their place.
A similar situation happened during the production of Tomorrow Never Dies. The original theme was recorded by film composer David Arnold with k.d. lang on vocals. Again, the producers did not feel the song was commercial enough and the title of the track was changed from the film’s name to “Surrender” and put at the end credits. It is reported that at least twelve artists submitted tracks for this film including Pulp, St. Etienne, Swan Lee and Marc Almond, but Sheryl Crow’s submission was ultimately selected.
Due to themes being scrapped last minute or artists unable to fulfill their contracts, some singers have been hired last minute, which has left the theme of that particular film to be less than satisfying. One of the few Bond themes not to be released as a proper single is the theme from Moonraker by Shirley Bassey. Bassey was hired quite late in production due to several artists such as Frank Sinatra, Johnny Mathis and Kate Bush not liking or not having the time to record the theme. Bassey rarely performs the track live as she has said she feels it is “not her own.”
Jack White and Alicia Keys were also hired in a similar manner as the original theme for Quantum of Solace was meant to be performed by Amy Winehouse with Mark Ronson producing. Amy’s then health problems and drug addiction prevented her from completing their contribution. Artists such as Eva Almer also submitted for the film but again were ultimately rejected.
British band Muse lobbied for their track “Supremacy” to be used as the theme for Skyfall. The song was originally written for their album “The 2nd Law”, as such they waited too long to submit and by then Adele was chosen to sing the theme. The song however was well liked by Eon, so much in fact it was optioned and was used in the film’s trailer and TV ad spots.
Overall there is a rich tapestry of history in Bond music, a lot of politics and some odd choices, but overall a wonderful sense of individuality from each era. The drama behind the scenes is mostly kept from the public, as to keep from distracting from the selected theme. In some cases I believe the history behind each theme is more interesting than the final result.

BoRhap Girls
Summary: Rami, Gwil, Ben and Joe were ecstatic at the thought of playing Queen in a biopic about their lives, what they didn't expect was to fall in love while on set, what else they fell in love with the daughters of Queen.
Warnings: Language, Explicit scenes (eventually).
An: I DO NOT own the rights to the movie Bohemian Rhapsody or the band Queen, this story is purely for fun. It is not required but this book is a sequel to the other four books that feature Freddie Mercury, Brian May, Roger Taylor and John Deacon. To understand the story and the new version of Bohemian Rhapsody the movie go back and read those then come back. The reason why this one is written first is because it, I already had an idea for this while the others I’m sort of experiencing writer’s block. Anyway onto the story.
Chapter One
The band Queen were a group of very talented men, these men were also very secretive about their social lives and anything not to do with their legendary status. Although the press and fans have done lots of research and know little details in their lives that they have tried to keep secret such as their children, but this story follows the lives of four very special girls and their time in the spotlight thanks to the new film about their fathers' band where they have been said to play a few very special roles, which have been yet to be disclosed. Now here I have exclusive details about the four girls now:
Lyrical Melina Jer Mercury, born July 13th 1985, She is the daughter of Freddie Mercury and Valentina Starr and is older sister to twin brothers, Bomi Hutton and Connor Bulsara Mercury and God daughter to John Deacon, Carnelian Powell and Mary Austin. Lyric has said to look like her mother but has the spirit and talent of her father, graduating from the same collage, where her parents first meet, along with her close friends Giselle, Eclipse and Opal. Lyric follows her father in a career in music, being the lead singer/Pianist to the group Bohemian Queens, under the pseudo name Melina Starr, but despite trying to make a name for herself the press and some of the fans can't help but compare her to her father. She is know to still live with her two fathers and her mother in the Garden Lodge, it has been said that there is an inside joke between the families of Queen that Lyric is actually Freddie's 11th child after his cats.
Eclipse Maggie May, born October 21st 1987, She is the fourth child between the couple Brian May and Astra Rivera and is one half of the pair nicknamed The Twins and God daughter to Roger Taylor and Gabrielle Rogers. While Eclipse does have her mother's looks her willingness to learn and teach she gets from her father. She moved to America to pursue a career as a middle school science teacher while continuing her studies after graduating the Ealing collage of art at the age of 18 and now house sits in her father's house in Los Angeles. She is proficient in playing any and every type of string instrument but her favorite to use is her red electric violin that she named 'little red' when she is known as Maggie Rivera in the band Bohemian Queens. Brian May has gone on record to say that he is proud of his daughter and that she reminds him of his wife everyday.
Opal Balisha Deacon, born October 21st 1988, She is the second youngest out of seven children to John Deacon and Carnelian Powell and is the other half of the pair nicknamed The Twins and God daughter to Brian May and Astra Rivera.People have said that she was 90% her mother she is 10% her dad. She is close to all of her siblings especially her older sister Laura, younger brother Cameron, she is also the only left handed child out of the bunch due to her mother's ambidextrous hands. She had been in the press due to the news of her having a baby boy named Timmy Raptor Deacon with her Ex Ashley Purdy from Black Veil Brides, though it's been rumored that their breakup was amicable. She has now moved out of her family home to live with her child in America and away from the press and changed her last name to her mothers'. She is also known under the name Balisha Powell and is the bassist and dance coordinator of Bohemian Queens.
Giselle Liz Taylor, born May 12th 1995, She is the youngest of the five Taylor children and the youngest daughter to Roger Taylor and Gabrielle Rogers and God Daughter to Freddie Mercury and Valentina Starr. She may look like her mother but she has her father's fire and ability to copy any beat on a drum. She doesn't talk to her half siblings, she understands why her dad had to marry Dom for their sake but is a little mad at her dad for taking so long to notice her mother's feelings for him. She is the youngest and is normally referred to as 'The Baby' of her group. She is also living at her parent's house after leaving Collage, where Roger has said is so he could protect her from boys like him. Giselle is also the alter ego to Liz Rogers the drummer/back up vocalist in the group Bohemian Queens.
Finally the band Bohemian Queens is a four person group, Melina Starr (lead singer, pianist), Maggie Rivera (Lead violinist, backing vocals), Giselle Rogers (drummer, backup vocals) and Balisha Powell (bass guitarist). The band is described as a Queen Tribute band, and their name comes from the word Bohemian, alluding to the band Queen's ability to do songs in any genre and Queens, a tribute to their songs Killer queen, White Queen, March of the black queen and means that all of the girls are the band and can't do it without each other. Another trademark that the band has clothing inspired by songs and albums the band Queen has released. And now the girls can add Actress to their job descriptions.
