Black Coffee

On a snow swept January morning, Ethan Ramsey stood by Derry Roasters bright and early in the hopes of getting a coffee on the way to work because his own machine was broken. Unfortunately though, as his luck could have it, the café was closed. He wished for some alternative, because mornings without coffee were especially tedious. But there seemed no other way.

Defeated, he started his trek toward Edenbrook hospital which stood in the distance, her lights twinkling away as she looked down upon the follies of hectic urban life. No matter what changed around her, she stood just as she did a few years ago, unbending to the modern standards, watching millions like him pass by every day. That’s why Edenbrook felt like home. It was unlike the more temporary things he had witnessed, and that is what he liked the most about medicine. It was permanent and evolving. It was always there for him when he needed it.

Fractured light, choked with swirling flurries filled the small alleyway that he usually used to get back to the hospital. When he went back, he’d have to deal with interns, fight against his desires when Alishka stood in front of him, but now, he still had his sanity at his disposal. Perhaps the best way to go about the day would be to ignore her altogether instead of having the much impulsive warm conversations on a snowy day. He could just hand her the charts right off in the morning, or leave them in the diagnostics office and find refuge in his own. The muted longing had to go away and not make an appearance. It would break them altogether someday.

He couldn’t believe he was actually thinking of ways to avoid his favorite intern. She was so clever, so thoughtful, and yet … it was almost poetic. He didn’t want to do this, at all, but a very stoic sentence was tattooed in his brain from the days of his childhood days.

He had been arguing with Alan about not going to school a few days after Louise had left. He didn’t want to go to school and talk to his friends on see himself in their pitiful glances or deal with it altogether. But Alan had said, ‘We all have to do things we don’t want to. That’s what growing up’s all about.’

Maybe it was true, he didn’t know. He did go to school that day, and every day after, but those words stuck. It felt awful to use them in a situation which was so ironic, so odd, with so many unsatisfying endings that it seemed fucked up.

But that was what growing up was all about.

His hands stiffened at his sides, and he curled his fingers in a fist to keep them warm. Edenbrook was merely a few steps away. He would soon be in his office and warmth. Perhaps to concentrate his mind while it was tearing him in so many directions, or perhaps just because he found some comfort in planning his time properly, he thought about all that he had to do today. He made a list and repeated it to himself silently. Little flakes kept landing down on him which he had to brush off again and again. Walking through the dreadfully cold snow seemed oddly comforting to him today.

Muffled footsteps voiced themselves behind him, boots working their way through the snow. He was wary of looking over his shoulders, but he resisted the caution. Who could it be? Probably someone from the hospital staff, or perhaps some stranger entirely, and how did it matter at all? Shaking his head, he kept trudging through the development, only to hear a very familiar voice behind him.

‘Doctor Ramsey!’ she called out.

Her hair were probably peppered with snow now, she thought, as she chased him down the alley. There was no logical reason for her to follow him, and she could bet he would argue there wasn’t, but she couldn’t help herself. She had noticed him standing outside Derry Roasters and then walking away in a dreadful expression, one that was usually reserved for the interns. The other interns. She knew what it was like to start a day without coffee, and she wouldn’t want that to happen, perhaps to anyone, which is why she had ordered and extra coffee at the café just across the street from Derry.

She didn’t care if he thought it was ridiculous coffee. It was still better than nothing.

‘Here,’ she said, handing him he Styrofoam cup. ‘I got you a coffee.’

At first, he just looked at her, bewildered. What is so surprising, she wanted to ask, but held off her question, just staring at him. He looked somewhat tired. Weary. But his blue eyes were still the same, vibrant and full of warmth and intelligence.

She let her gaze drop to her feet.

Caught in the trap of looking and yet not wanting to acknowledge it. Perhaps he didn’t want to see her at all.

Ethan took the coffee from her, thankfully, for she wished desperately to be not embarrassed anymore. As his fingers brushed her, she kept reminding herself that he was her employer, nothing more. Giving it too much importance would lead her astray. No matter how much they were in each other’s orbit, this meant nothing, as he had made abundantly clear. They were just … colleagues. Not even. Just look away, she told him sourly in her own mind. Employer, she repeated to herself. She needed the safety of her single bed. She needed to steer clear of headaches. She had work to do.

‘Thank you,’ he said gruffly, before falling in beside her silently. She had not anticipated that they would walk to the hospital together. Now everything was in slow motion, everything happening under water. She felt nauseous.

It took them ten good minutes to walk to the hospital which would, in normal circumstances take only five minutes.

Elsewhere in the city, other lives and conversations were unfolding.

But they were on their way to the hospital, walking in absolute silence. It wasn’t much was it? It was just coffee.

Their splendor walk in the snow-caked alleyway was complete. It was time she took her leave. Say nothing and just walk away, that is what she did. But his baritone voice made her stop again.

‘Rookie, you didn’t have to do that. But you did. So thank you.’

She didn’t turn around to face him. Just nodded and left, feeling the gaze of those summer blue eyes still on her.

It was as if she was running the snow of the Atlantic, running free and wild while no one watched. Where nothing mattered. Where she and Ethan could still make it. Live a few hours of peace and warmth and die while the universe went on without them.

1- When did you start playing Choices? What's the first book you played?

I wanna say the early days like 2017-ish. The first book I played was The Freshman.

2- When, and why, did you join Choices fandom?

Again, the early days of Choices. I’m pretty sure it was in 2017, as Choices was pretty new at the time and there weren’t a lot of book options at the time. I joined because I had seen an ad for the game and I thought it looked like fun. Little did I know it would lead me down the rabbit hole.

3- How did you pick your URL name?

It’s a manipulation of my real name. It took far longer than I’m willing to admit to come to my final decision.

4- Go back to your archive and tell us about the first post on your Choices blog.

I’m not a Choices blog, exclusively, but according to my archive, my first Choices post was when I posted my fic The Aftermath on 4/29/21. I do suspect that’s off because I feel like I remember posting things related to OPH before then but I likely didn’t tag it which is why it’s not showing up.

5- How long have you been writing fanfiction?

Since 2013, I believe. I used to write a lot for the HP fandom; I used to write stories while sitting in my lecture classes (don’t follow my example, kids).

6- What is your favorite Choices book to write about?

I’ve only ever written for Open Heart. I’ve had a few ideas for some other books but nothing that ever developed past the brainstorming stage.

7- Share the first fanfic you wrote with us. Do you still like it or would you change anything about it?

The first fic I ever shared with CFWC was Part 3 of my Choices mini-series. That whole series has a special place in my heart because of how difficult it was to write and the emotional toll it took on me, but that particular chapter was one of my favorites. I wouldn’t change a single thing about it.

8- What is your favorite fic that you’ve written?

That’s like asking me to pick a favorite child. This also contradicts my #1 fic for the Writer’s Top 3 event but I have to say I love A Dance in the Moonlight. It’s sweet and fluffy and gives me all the domestic vibes we were denied in canon. That one just makes me happy.

9- Do you have a fic that you didn’t expect to be well received, but it was? What about one you expected to be, but it could use a little more love?

Hmm… my Bryce x Sienna fic The Start of Something New. That one took me months to write and when I finally posted it, I didn’t think anyone would like it but I was pleasantly surprised to find I was wrong.

In truth, I don’t think there’s one that could use more love. I feel like my fics are lucky enough to have the love they do get; I couldn’t really ask for more than that.

10- What is your specialty as a fanfic writer?

I have no idea. Fluff? Let’s go with fluff, that seems accurate.

11- If you could write only angst, fluff, or smut for the rest of your writing life, which would it be and why?

Fluff. I like a good angst but fluff makes my heart happy and it comes a lot more naturally to me.

12- Do you ever recognize yourself in any of your MC’s or in your writing?

Nat is definitely me. Dani, as well, though I’ve based a lot of her mannerisms off of my real-life friends as well.

13- What element of writing do you struggle with most?

Worldbuilding, I think. I like developing characters and I feel that I’m pretty good with plot points, but worldbuilding always seems to get me at that ‘stuck’ point.

14- Do you have any neglected work you really want to finish?

Tons. My Book 3 rewrite to start. I, unfortunately, wrote myself into a corner with that one and I haven’t been able to get myself out of it. Someday I’ll figure out how to get that one back off the ground…

15- If someone you know in real life (who isn’t involved in fandoms) asked to read your work, would you let them? If yes, what would you recommend they read first?

Hmm… I’m not sure. I’m very protective of my writing and I try to keep it separate from my personal/real life. So I suppose it depends on how well I know that person. If I were to have them read a fic, I’d have them read With Every Heartbeat. It’s angst with a happy ending, and it’s a fic I’m proud of so that feels like the best choice.

16- Are there any writers (published authors and/or fanfic writers) who influenced your writing?

The Sisterhood, of course! As for published authors, there’s no one author who influenced me. I’ve been influenced by many authors, it’d be hard to narrow down just one person.

17- Which one of your stories would you most like to see as a movie/series?

Oh dang, what a question. I’d have to say either my Choices mini-series or my current WIP The Way I Loved You. They feel like they could be the most fun to turn into a movie or series.

18- Do you write original stories?

Yes and no. I have some WIPs that I’ve been working on for years but, again, I get stuck at worldbuilding. I’d like to tackle them again but it’s been so long, I’m going to have to start back at square one. Though, I suppose that’s not the worst thing.

19 - What other hobbies do you have?

Video games, reading, dancing, yoga, and Dungeons & Dragons (‘cause I’m a nerd)!

20 - What’s your favorite emoji?

The sheep emoji, of course! 🐑

I think I would enjoy LoA if it wasn't for how blatantly forced Gabe is. I have taken zero heart options with him, but whenever he creeps up on MC, she still acts interested based on the writing.

It seems to me like they want to make him Ethonk 2.0, just with a more 'Bryce' vibe to make him more likeable. It sucks that we can't have one book where the mentor-mentee stays platonic/professional, but PB needs that forced male LI with the added complete neglect of the only female LI

I definitely know how you feel. im an ayna stan after all. i used to see how people used to praise the hell out of fa when it was so mediocre to me?? MAYBE if they gave Ayna proper screentime and story arc, I would've loved fa more. so i get how you feel! you must not even want loa to get another book, just like i wanted fa to end up as standalone.

Lis play a huge role in liking a book. I def understand how frustrating it gets when the "main" li overshadows the others and mc and the said li act interested in each other. I thought they might have learnt their lesson from oph but apparently not😖😖

Ride or Die: Good or bad, what book defied your expectations?

Hands down Blades of Light and Shadow. I was still pretty new to the fandom when I played the book (before that I had only played Hero, TRR books 1,2 and the High School Story series) so when I saw the amount of customisation, the music and the art I was blown away. It defied my expectations in a very good way.

The Royal Romance: What’s a plotline you feel like PB could have addressed better?

I think they could have addressed MCs harassment and retaliation against Montmarte much better in RCD book 2. It could have been a powerful narrative if handled properly.

Rules of Engagement: Do you like playing as multiple characters or do you prefer one MC?

I like playing as only the MC most of the time, but once we get to know the characters I do enjoy playing as the characters we love (like in Oph we got to play as Bryce and Ethan at a very crucial plot point, I loved that)

Veil of Secrets: What is a choice you’ve regretted making in the books? Why did you regret it?

I don't think I regret any of my choices. I regret a lot of real life choices I make so it's a relief I don't regret any of the in game choices.

🥺 yes, of course! thank you for asking about my bbs 💕

Love Lao is my canon/game MC. She’s a messy bitch who needs to get her life together. She’s romanced all of the male LIs, and as of book 3 has not made a decision on if / who she’s going to romance. She left book 2 on kinda an awkward note with the boys.... Love has become a cool analogy when writing The Messy Route. Personality-wise she’s pretty much the chaotic part of Becca multiplied (if you read The Conference, you’ll understand). 

Rebecca ‘Becca’ Lao is my favorite fic bean. She exists in a bunch of universes doing a bunch of things like romancing Bryce and living through trauma, but mostly she’s breaking Ethan’s heart. She’s such a strong character with a lot of flaws and a huge heart. She’s just out here trying to be selfless and save patients no matter the toll on herself (which ofc Ethan adoringly hates about her). 

Hannah Weill is my Childhood Sweethearts Bryce AU MC. Omg I love writing Hannah. She’s flawed to the max and as we get out of the ‘childhood’/’past’ fics and more into who she is as a young adult, she is so hard to like. I actually don’t vibe with her and that may be why her shitty self-destructive habits are so fun to write. She’s totally dissociated and a take-no-prisoners girl, and my goodness watching her navigate love makes me cringe of second-hand embarrassment. Especially when she sees Bryce again. It’s wild and great and I really really wish these fics would write themselves 🤣 the narration of this series is so good of an idea if i can actually pull it off

Odette ‘Etta’ Hall is my Musical Prodigy Ethan MC. She hasn’t romanced anyone in the books. She and Ethan are super close friends especially after everything they’ve been through (the toxin event didn’t happen in this universe) - she’s undoubtedly his best friend. She had a development deal as a kid and writes music; Ethan’s the only one who knows about that part of her for a while. At this point they’re 3 years into their friendship and have a mild codependence brewing. Their love will blossom with minimal angst 😊

1. if someone wanted to really understand you, what would they read, watch, and listen to?

I discovered recently that it’s the Graceling series by Kristin Cashore! So Graceling, Fire and Bitterblue. Especially the last book. I’ve read them several times since I was about 15, and I can’t figure out if I’ve internalised them because I love them so much, or if I love them so much because they represent me? 

Katsa’s relationship with womanhood and freedom, her fear and frustration over her feelings for Po. Being so sure of yourself your own head turns against you. Struggling with consolidating your wants and needs with your own uncompromising perceptions and ideals. Her deeply physical and grounded relationship to her body and the world around her. How things like woods and mountains and fighting and wonder and anger makes you feel real. The ideal of being in control of your own body, strong and capable. 

Fire’s relationship to men, her frustration over how she has to meticulously administer people’s perception of her, wanting to be ugly while still relishing in her own beauty, wanting to be invisible while desperately longing for someone to truly see her, feeling immensely lonely surrounded by people and feeling the most like herself when she is alone. Being physically helpless. 

Bitterblue’s infinite curiosity with language, words and meaning. Always writing everything down, for paper and ink are flat and one-dimensional and easy to navigate, but thoughts are vague and intangible. The ideal of exploring, learning, experiencing. Feeling weak and powerless, patronised and misinterpreted. Watching her friends, heart bursting with fondness, especially her relationship with Giddon. “It’s your delicacy, you know. It makes a fellow want to bare his soul.” 

All three protagonists are easily caught by the beauty of things, places, concepts and truths. Wonder is written as a fundamental, physical sensation like a burst of energy. All their romantic relationship feel like they’re written with me in mind (except for the part that they’re all in love with men).

Idk I could just go on and on about these books all day but it won’t make you feel it like I do either way. Which is very depressing. But also a bit comforting?

Avatar the last airbender Toph! I heavily identify with girls that refuse to be girly and I think Toph was the first girl like that I found. Temperamental, childish, self-centered, cocky. 

The Adventure Zone Carey! Rowdy little lizard, not traditionally feminine, gay for big orc women. I vibe with her HARD. 

Their story Sun Jing! Again, not traditionally feminine. Goofy, animated, oblivious. Is capable of being incredibly suave, but is somehow a blushy awkward mess when it actually matters.

Ace attorney I hate the girl next door trope that Athena Cykes embodies, but I am literally that trope personified. Cartoonishly up-beat, temperamental, loud, cutesy, opinionated but with a heaping spoonful of dumb bitch energy.

Legend of Zelda Link......something about him just speaks to me? Quiet, determined, androgynous. Nothing like me, and yet...?
