Oh man, I feel you on the Medstar books. And I, too, love to work them into my fics as often as possible. That and The Approaching Storm for good measure. It's also important that she was at Umbara.
Now that I finished the Medstar books later night, I just borrowed The Approaching Storm and plan on digging in to it!
I've been wanting to weave in the Umbaran Campaign into my story in some way beyond a simple mention, but I'm kind of stuck with no ideas on it rn unfortunately.
I wouldn't be surprised if they retcon it completely, but I also want to add her imprisonment on Felucia and subsequent rescue by Aayla shortly after her Knighting (since it's still considered to be canon in some way?). Of course the Legends story of it doesn't match with canon in any significant way so I would make major changes to it so it could fit into the timeline properly, but I feel like it could be a major turning point for her mentallyā€”like the final nail in the coffin (or close to it) leading up to the Temple plot.
I have a lot of ideas and I really want to start writing it out, but at the same time I'm overly worried about characterization and it's completely stopping any progress. I really want to talk through my ideas before I work on it, but I don't really know anyone to talk to here other than my friend (who I assume would be willing to listen but she doesn't really know Barriss beyond looking over my shoulder while I was crying over TOTE).
Idk it's just super important to me that I do it well bc I love her character so much and I want to do right by her especially when she is so misunderstood

Emma in the night Book review.
Hello there my lovelies, I know its been a little while since I last posted and I have honestly missed doing this so much, so thank you to anyone still here and still supporting me, it means the absolute world.Ā
As everyone is fully aware 2020 was an awful one but hopefully this year we can aim for a little more positivity and happiness, which is why im back today with a review of my first read of this year and bloody hell did I pick a goodun! So this is my first review for my first book of 2021, enjoy!Ā
Tumblr media
The writing style
One of my favourite things about this book was the different points of view you get to experience and how well they mesh together. For example, we are told very early on that the events Cass is recalling arenā€™t exactly what you would call accurate and that she has spent months planning and creating this false narrative in an order to manipulate the people she's describing them to (which in itself is something I always get drawn into, the mystery and the need to figure out the characters motives and intentions along side the biggest question of all WHY?! Which is a question will find yourself screaming at the pages) This is made very apparent from the use of the choppy and restrictive way that these scenes are written. Wendy also somehow manages to create a feeling of desperation and messiness whilst having the characters maintaining such a mellow and collected exterior, you know the calm before the storm! Which is such a jarring feeling but one that realty captured and immersed me. A feeling I donā€™t think is easy to convey through a book format. That in itself is a testament to Wendyā€™s talent as a writer.
When you compare Cassā€™ chapters and inner dialogue to detective Abbyā€™s they are so different but when they are looked at side by side they create a very interesting contrast that as I said before works so well, while there is a calm chaos to Cassā€™ words there is in turn a very structured and balanced feel to Abby's, almost a little detached like you were reading sections cut directly from a police case file. Through this constant difference in characters POVS the story flowed flawlessly and at the perfect pace for a thriller book.Ā
The climax of the book was not just shocking but also depicted so well in how the writing matched the pace of the reveal, the whole book alternates between cass and Abby with each chapter assigned to one of the characters but towards the end you see that the different POVs are whittled down to single sentences or just a few paragraphs that get shorter and shorter as the tension builds, creating this intense feeling of panic, alert and fear. A method that I swear had my heart physically racing at the end! It was like watching a classic cat and mouse scene play out in my hands/
I also have to mention that very last chapter. I'm sorry for waffling on but please bare with me. For a book based around secrets and deception the ending was that of a perfect one because of its ability to make you feel like after reading it you now share a secret with Cass and you are now part of this extremely messed up story and family, you have this understanding of her whole character and her motives which really brings everything full circle.
The character development:
The character development in this book is one of the best ive seen in awhile with each character being incredibly layered and yet undeniably flawed. Its done in such a human way that it doesnā€™t feel too far fetched like some thrillers ive read in recent years. Ensuring that all of the emotions tied in with said characters hit 10 times harder than that of those very basic 2 dimensional characters, even the worst people in this story have a difficult background or some type of abusive past, just a catalyst for their behaviours and characteristics and by gradually being informed of them you and being given the bigger picture you almost create an individual relationship and opinion on them ranging from hatred to pity.Ā We get amazing development in every single one even the seemingly unimportant ones because even they are given enough backstory to still secure a connection of some kind with them, something I know we can all appreciate as readers.
The relationships.
The main relationship ill focus on is that of the sisters Cass and Emma. I know there are a lot of relationships in this book that over lap and intertwine in really interesting and sometimes awful ways but as these two characters are the basis of our main storyline it makes a little more sense to focus the attention on them
As a huge plot point throughout the story we see that due to the actions of their mother and her lack of genuine maternal instinct and well, love we see the girls in this constant battle of who can earn their mothers love trust and affections first. Which was so heart breaking to read, through their mothers constant manipulation and abuse we see them fighting the resentment and distance that they know is growing between them and sadly a lot of the time losing because of Mrs. Martins influence and involvement. Its very obvious when reading about their mother that her abuse is based around the fear she feels at the idea of any kind of alliance that the girls could potentially form with each other, god forbid they turn against her and out her as a bad mother! So she decides its easier to create a wedge between the two of them by openly favouring one over the other which unfortunately results in a lot of cruel actions from Emma direct at Cass, creating another toxic relationship and situation for the girls to live in. Although we do get the occasional glimpse at these really beautiful and raw moments of sisterhood and love they share deep down. After seeing so much pain in their story it made these moments just that little bit more special and down right beautiful which was a part that i especially adored.
The themes:
In its relatively short amount of pages this book manages to explore a huge variety of themes from love and obsession to betrayal abuse and manipulation, which lets be honest is everything you want in a good thriller book but usually when a writer takes on this many themes I always find some of them are either touched upon very quickly then dismissed and never revisited or thought of again or done so badly with such a lack of care that its obvious they were just included for the author to be able to say they've hit all the key themes a reader would expect a good thriller to hit. Yet Wendy manages to not only explore all of these and more, but manages to do it well and so subtly you don't notice until you sit back and think about them all which to me just shows a writers real talent.
The psychology:
Another huge part of this book and something I adored were the analysis parts of the book, the in-depth look into narcissism and its effects on the children it surrounds. Ā We are constantly listening to Detective Abby explaining and exploring the characteristics of the people Cass is talking about in her chapters, exploring the connections and the risk factors associated with such a serious disorder as narcissistic personality disorder. I found this to give the story and writing some real merit, it felt like i was reading a psychology book and getting down to the real science of why characters work the way they do and giving the reader a chance to explore it themselves instead of just being told this person has this which is something I cant stand in books. Instead of investing time and effort into helping guide you to a conclusion or even showing you they just tell you this is how it is and expect that to be enough. So frustrating! None the less, this is something I haven't experienced in another book and a technique I hope to see more of!
Similar books:
When reading this I got very strong sharp objects vibes, the fractured relationship between families, focusing on mother and daughter, a highly manipulative mother, an obsession with public facades and the desperate need to keep up appearances and so much more! If you liked sharp objects you will love this, as Emma in the night has all of the important story beats and intrigue that sharp objects has but more intensity and a faster paced story something I felt was missing when I read SOā€™S.
Over all I adored this book, as you can probably tell and considering it is my first Wendy walker book I can safely say i have fallen in love! I can promise you now this will not be my last read from her collection. I was captivated by her story and her writing which is why i couldnā€™t recommend this more!
A very very easy 5/5.Ā
so that's it, thanks for reading my review, i really hope you enjoyed it! sorry if I waffled at all its been awhile since ive written any reviews and am still getting my bearings with it again so please be patient with me. Hope you have a fab week my lovelies, Bye!

Letā€™s All Head To The Hamptons Too!
Good dayā€¦ And a Happy Friday to one and all! The infusion confusion fog dissipated for the most part yesterday as the day went along, but still lingers a tiny bit this morning. The heart doctor visit was good. He was very pleased with the weight Iā€™ve lost since seeing me in the hospital 2 months ago. Iā€™ve still got a ways to go with regards to weight loss, but I didnā€™t gain it all at once, and I wonā€™t lose it all at once! This is the start of a 3-day, holiday weekend. Memorial Day weekend. YAHOO! I could use a few days of sleeping in! Iā€™ll have more on Memorial Day in the Big Finish todayā€¦ Aaron Neville greets me this morning with his song: Tell It Like It is.. . I always get a little emotional when I hear this song, because, this is the song that my oldest sister, Brenda taught me to slow dance toā€¦ Brenda was so special to me, she taught me to tie my shoe, she taught what never to say to a girl, and so onā€¦
OK, Iā€™ll get off the nostalgia road I was on thereā€¦ Well, the markets will get really thin this afternoon, as the U.S. heads to a 3-day holiday weekend, and the Big Swinging Traders will be heading to the Hamptons, thus leaving their trading books with the junior traders with strict instructions to not take on any risk positions. I always think of myself in those situations, and seeing an opportunity to buy something cheap, and going ahead and taking on the position, and then take the mantra of: Itā€™s easier to ask for forgiveness than to ask for permission! But shoot Rudy, donā€™t we all wish we could Head To The Hamptons too?
With the U.K. also on holiday Monday, itā€™s made the thin volume already present in the markets, and the currencies are just trading sideways this morning. Pound sterling is taking on some water though this morning after the latest poll had the Conservatives lead narrowing to just 5 percentage pointsā€¦ Iā€™m going to point out once again that I called this scenario two months ago, when PM May called for this election, thinking that it would strengthen her position as the U.K. headed to BREXITā€¦ I said at the time that I thought she was taking a risk that she didnā€™t need toā€¦ And now look whatā€™s happening! The pound has lost the 1.29 handle on the poll news, andā€¦ 1st QTR GDP was revised downward to 0.2% from 0.3%ā€¦
Well, I guess it wasnā€™t a very well-kept secret was it? Iā€™m talking about the OPEC and non OPEC nations meetings yesterday, where they agreed to maintain their production cuts for 9 more monthsā€¦ They didnā€™t catch anyone off guard by announcing additional cuts, as I was thinking they might doā€¦ And the price of Oil? Well, traders werenā€™t too happy knowing ahead of time what the outcome would be, soā€¦ it was a very clear case of buy the rumor sell the fact, as traders sold Oil after the meeting announcement. I do want to point out that at the beginning of May the price of Oil had a $ 45 handle on it, and on Tuesday it was trading with a $ 51 handle on itā€¦ So the ā€œbuy the rumorā€ part was strongā€¦ Iā€™m thinking that the ā€œsell the factā€ part wonā€™t end up being that strongā€¦ But so far this morning the price of Oil has a $ 48 handle..
Inflation is falling in Russiaā€¦ And has been for over a year now, thus the previous rate cuts from the Central Bank of Russia (CBR) have been spot on. Last month, I wrote about how I saw the internal rate in Russia being cut several times this year, and ending the year around 7.5% for their internal rate. Now, in days gone by, traders would have loved to see inflation falling like it is, and if the so-called experts who make calls on stuff like this, are correct, the headline inflation # could very well be below 4% by the end of summerā€¦ Food inflation has been the big mover in Russian CPI (consumer inflation) A year ago the food inflation component of CPI was 5.3%,this year (same month) it was 3.6% year on year.. Now, one would think that given this fall in CPI, and the thought that the internal rate will be cut several times this year, that the ruble would be under pressureā€¦ But not so much, as the ruble remains tied to the price of Oil right nowā€¦
The euro is trading above 1.12 this morning at 1.1220, and itā€™s all just a reflection of what the dollar is doing, as thereā€™s been no news from the Eurozone the last couple of days, nor today, so the euro rises as the dollar gets sold, but itā€™s not an across the board selling of the dollar, as the euro is one of the few currencies that has moved positively this morning, as the other currencies, as I said above, are moving sideways.
Gold lost $ 3.20 from its price on Wednesday, and closed at $ 1,255.40ā€¦ The shiny metal is up $ 6.80 as I writeā€¦ And in the aftermarket yesterday Gold recovered the $ .3.20 lost during the day and added to its priceā€¦ This will be one of those strange days where the SGE price of Gold is on top of the COMEX price of Gold. This happens when here in the U.S. the price of Gold rallies in the aftermarket and in the early morning trading. The SGE takes the closing COMEX price and goes from thereā€¦ So, donā€™t worry, the SGE price will play catchup on Sunday night, when weā€™re still attempting to get the smell of charcoal smoke off our bodies!
Investment returnsā€¦ Investors are addicted to them, always looking for something that returns moreā€¦ But these days, even stock market gains are minimal compared to other thingsā€¦ Publishing guru, Bill Bonner wrote in his letter yesterday (www.bonnerandpartners.com ) about investment returns, and he had some interesting information that I think you all should hear.. So.. with no further ado, hereā€™s Bill!
ā€œBut that doesnā€™t mean youā€™ll make money with Buffett. Over the past 20 years, Berkshire Hathaway failed to beat the return from 30-year U.S. Treasuries. What? How could that be?
Following the 2008 crisis, the Fed bought long-term Treasuries as part of its QE program, driving up prices. Even Buffett couldnā€™t keep up. But wait, thereā€™s more.
Guess what beat BOTH long-term Treasuries and Buffettā€¦ with zero management feesā€¦ and near-zero risk.?
And before we open the envelope, consider that this was a period in which every major central bank was pushing up bond prices directly with $ 12 trillion in newly created money.
ā€¦a period in which the Dow tripledā€¦
What beat stocks and bonds? Can you guess?
Gold, with an annual return of 7.6%. Go figure.ā€
Thanks Bill, for reminding us that you need to look over periods of time, and not just what have you done for me lately with investments!
Speaking of Goldā€¦ my guitar playing friend, Steve Sjuggerud, was writing about Gold yesterday in his letter that is sent out by www.stansberryresearch.com . But more to the point he was illustrating why he thinks Platinum is ready for a runā€¦ He said that he doesnā€™t have a particular expertise in Platinum but he knows three things: 1. The downturn in prices is still in place 2. So, Iā€™m not a buyer yetā€¦ Howeverā€¦ 3. History says Big Platinum discounts usually donā€™t last long.
So, thereā€™s something for you to think about this morning or whenever it is that you get around to reading the Pfennig!
Well, yesterday I talked about the Fedā€™s Balance Sheet of $ 4.5 Trillion in Treasuries and Mortgage Backed Bonds, and how the Fed was going to probably give the skinny on their unwinding of the positions at the June meeting. The 5 Minute Forecast (www.agorafinancial.com ) was discussing the Fedā€™s unwinding of its Balance Sheet. First let me correct something I said yesterday, when I called the ā€œGreat Unwindā€ the GW. A dear reader pointed GW out to me and said, ā€œshouldnā€™t it be GUā€? Of course it should! What a dolt I was, but then I do have an excuse going for me, as I was suffering from infusion confusionā€¦
So, anyway, the ā€œ5ā€ had this to say about the GUā€¦ ā€œBy some estimate, a $ 500 billion reduction in the Fed balance sheet has the same tightening impact as a 1% increase in the fed funds rate. At present, the fed funds rate is 1%, and the Fed is looking to raise it to 1.25% next month.ā€
WOW! That could end up being a real bugaboo for the Fed should they unwind too quickly! Iā€™m in agreement with James Rickards on how the Fed will unwind, and that is to simply allow maturing bonds to pay off and not reinvest the proceeds, which is good, because the Fed created the money to buy the bonds out of thin air to begin with, and the proceeds should go right back to thin air! The Fed created the dollars and when the bonds come due, theyā€™ll take those dollars and send them to the Treasury. What the Treasury does with them is up in the air.
Oh woe is meā€¦ Iā€™m sitting here thinking of all sorts of things that the Treasury could do with the proceeds, and thatā€™s useless! Iā€™m worried about this process and I need to stop worrying! OK, there! I said to myself, Chuck, stop worrying! Hopefully, that will work!
What should I worry about? HA! I guess I should worry about the economic data here in the U.S. So, letā€™s check out the Data Cupboard, and get on with this!
The U.S. Data Cupboard yesterday, had the April Trade Balance (read deficit!) for us to look atā€¦ You might recall me telling you that with the weaker dollar in April that we might see a narrowing of the Deficit from $ 65.1 Billion in March.. But that didnā€™t happenā€¦ And the Trade Deficit grew to $ 67.6 Billion! Now that figure doesnā€™t take in any credit from Services, as that total will be printed on June 2ndā€¦ But normally those ā€œservicesā€ donā€™t change the total number too much.. The reason the Govā€™t separates these two, is to have a better feel for GDPā€¦
And with that thought, I can tell you that a lot of the economists, and economic research places are already changing their outlook from a robust 2nd QTR GDP to one that isnā€™t so robustā€¦ Uh-Oh, that should throw a spanner in the works for the Fed, who are still saying that 1st QTR slowdown was only ā€œtransitoryā€, and that the 2nd QTR would be much betterā€¦ Uh-Ohā€¦
Todayā€™s U.S. Data Cupboard will have plenty of data for us to chew onā€¦ A revision to 1st QTR GDP, which originally printed at 0.7%, is expected to be revised upward to 0.9%, as if that would make a difference worth a hill of beans! But, the rate hike campers will be pointing to the upward revision, and doing their happy danceā€¦ Weā€™ll also see April Durable Goods Orders which will most likely print negativeā€¦ And Capital Goods Orders, which Iā€™ve explained several times in the past, is the cornerstone of a growing economy, without Capital Equipment being bought, the economy has nowhere to go. And then finally we finish it all off today with the final April print of Consumer Sentiment, which should remain high, but as always I want to point out, that this is simply a measure of the stock market, and nothing else!
So, nothing there really to move the dollar weaker this morningā€¦ So after reading the Pfennig this morning, just close up shop, and start the 3-day holiday weekend early! You have my permission to do so!
To recapā€¦ The currencies, for the most part, are moving sideways today, as thinned out trading desks and volumes will be the call to order today, as we head to a 3-day Holiday Weekend here and in the U.K. The euro is back above 1.12, but itā€™s strictly a case of the dollar getting sold and not euro strength on any Eurozone news, because there is none! The pound sterling is getting sold though this morning on the news that the Polls showed just a 5 pt. lead for the conservativesā€¦ I think Iā€™m going to get to say, that I told her so! Gold heads higher in the early morning trading after losing $ 3.20 yesterday, and the price of Oil drops after the OPEC meeting, thus being a case of buy the rumor, sell the factā€¦
For What Itā€™s Worthā€¦ I have a special treat for you todayā€¦ This is my newest fave economist, Danielle Di Martino Booth, talking in her latest missive that she sends out pretty much every week. I implore you click on the link and read her message about how we should beware of Central Bankers bearing giftsā€¦ And you can read it all here: http://dimartinobooth.com/beware-central-bankers-bearing-gifts/
Or, hereā€™s your snippet: ā€œthe Federal Reserveā€™s last Federal Open Market Committee Minutes warned that ā€œequity prices are quite high relative to standard valuation measures.ā€
Letā€™s see. Where does the stock market fit into Congressā€™ statutory requirements that the Fedā€™s objectives be: ā€œmaximum employment, stable prices and moderate long-term interest ratesā€? You neither, huh?
The Minutes also indicated that, ā€œequity price indexes increased over the intermeeting period.ā€ Is it the slightest bit alarming that monetary policymakers are nodding to a phenomena thatā€™s been in place since March 2009 as having just occurred to them? Are we pondering pure coincidence or is this exactly what it appears to be ā€” political pandering?
This from CNBC: FOMC Minutes have unleashed the word ā€œvaluationā€™ as it pertains to equities six times since Alan Greenspan, a self-described obsessive observer of the stock market, first uttered the words, ā€œirrational exuberance.ā€ In every instance, stocks were hit over the next 12 months.ā€
Chuck againā€¦ From time to time I will highlight Danielle Di Martino Boothā€™s letter, because I believe she and I walk in the same circles, but her credentials are far better than mine! Might I also throw in that her book, Fed Up, is a very good read, and something that everyone that wants to know what was going on inside the Fed during the last Financial Crisis, will want to read. Iā€™m sure you can find it on any of the online book stores like Amazon or whateverā€¦
Currencies today 5/26/17ā€¦ American Style: A$ .7455, kiwi .7050, C$ .7433, euro 1.1225, sterling 1.2875, Swiss $ .97ā€¦ European Style: rand 12.8933, krone 8.3716, SEK 8.6646, forint 273.53, zloty 3.7223, koruna 23.5398, RUB 56.35, yen 110.98, sing 1.3815, HKD 7.7945, INR 64.42, China 6.8742, peso 18.45, BRL 3.2774, Dollar Index 97.08, Oil $ 49.20, 10-year 2.24%, Silver $ 17.30, Platinum $ 959.21, Palladium $ 779.05, Gold 1,269.50, and SGE Gold $ 1,266.53
Thatā€™s it for todayā€¦ Today begins the Holiday weekend known as Memorial Dayā€¦ This is a day that we are to remember those brave soldiers that died for this country. I know that the day will be celebrated by those that think about Memorial Day as the first day of summer, and that pools open, and BBQ smells fill the air. And I do enjoy all those things, but to me this is a somber Holiday. One that I feel should be made more ofā€¦ A dear reader sent me a 5-minute video about a Catholic Military Chaplain in the Korean Warā€¦ It brought tears to my eyes, and yes, even though I only have one good eye, I still tear up in both eyes. And itā€™s with great personal feeling that I give you the link to this videoā€¦ I hope it moves you the way it moved me.
But, just because I make a big deal out of the real reason for Memorial Day, doesnā€™t mean you have to, so go out an fill your neighborhood with the smell of charcoal burning! That smell always gets my mouth watering for what till come later! Today, Dawn and Delaney Grace will be celebrating the end of the school year, with Delaney and Everettā€™s friends coming over to swim, and tomorrow, is Bradenā€™s birthday party here at the house. So, Iā€™ll be busy the next two days, and on Monday, me and my boys, go to the Cardinals game. Sons Andrew and Alex, and adopted son Jerry (Dawnā€™s husband) are heading to Busch Stadium on Monday, should be fun! And I think Mike Leake will be pitching that day! The Scorpions take us to the finish line today with their song: Still Loving You, which every time I hear this song, I think of my friend, Laura Baur, who loves this song! And with that, I hope you have a Fantastico Friday, and a Wonderful Weekend! I thank you for reading the Pfennig, and hope you forward it to all your friends and family! Be Good To Yourself!
