Josie and The Pussycats is the Spinoff Riverdale Deserves
https://ift.tt/eA8V8J
This RIVERDALE review contains spoilers.
Riverdale Season 5 Episode 15
“Our story is about three young women bursting with talent.”
When last we saw Josie McCoy (Ashleigh Murray), she was in New York City trying to make her dreams come true on the ill-fated (and gone-too-soon) Riverdale spin-off Katy Keene. Often when characters are spun-off and their subsequent shows fail, they vanish into the pop culture ether — The Ropers from Three’s Company being the textbook case of this phenomenon. But not so for Josie. This latest episode debuts a new iteration of the character, one who has achieved her dreams but still finds herself wanting more. It is a decidedly more mature take on the previously underwritten character, and one that allows Murray’s considerable acting and musical abilities to shine.
In short, it is the Josie that fans have always wanted to see.
But what good is the character without the backing of her Pussycats? Drummer Melody Valentine (Asha Bromfield) and multi-instrumentalist Valerie Brown (Hayley Law) have been estranged from Josie since she blew off the Pussycats for a solo career when they were in high school. Seven years later and the wounds are still raw, even though Melody has since become a renowned author with movie rights optioned by Tyler Perry, and Valerie is a talented artist and actress.
When Josie returns to Riverdale to take stock following the sudden death of her father, she finds herself coming to terms with her past. More than that though, she has found her voice in every sense of the word. She dismisses Mr. Lodge, the show’s big bad in a hilarious kiss off that sums up many viewers’ opinions on the often irksome character. Better still, the episode allows her to get meta to discuss how Riverdale often sidelined the Josie character in her previous iteration on the series. “I didn’t have much to say in old times,” she plaintively declares, commenting on the problem that Riverdale had with diversity in its early seasons. She then accurately dismisses Archie, Betty, Veronica and Jughead not as old friends but as acquaintances. It’s a bold and surprising scene that takes responsibility for past sins that the series committed, further illustrating that it is aware that it can do better and has been attempting to do so.
After a steamy reunion with old flame Sweet Pea (Jordan Connor), Josie begins the work of reaching out to Valerie and Melody. It is here that the episode goes from great to an all-timer. The chemistry that Murray, Bromfield and Law possess is lightning in a bottle. As old injustices are aired and attempts to repair wounded hearts and egos are undertaken, these actresses embody the old friends they portray fully. But this backdoor pilot, fortunately, has zero interest in having its women of color tear each other down. The characters candidly discuss their shared past, and begin to repair the rift that will — if The Pussycats goes to series — lead them to becoming the global superstars they are destined to be.
Josie, Melody and Valerie are icons. They know it, and the world will soon follow.
Inspired by her renewed friendship with her once and future bandmates, Josie decides to do a concert with the Pussycats that will raise money to help reincorporate the town of Riverdale. It is a performance that highlights each of the women’s musical strengths, even if Josie does steal the spotlight for an emotional rendition of Nina Simone’s “Stars.” Despite being cut short when Toni goes into labor, the concert is enough of a success for The Pussycats to agree to go on the road together — playing in towns where Josie’s late father wanted his ashes scattered. The women consider themselves to be equals now, thus the “Josie and” is jettisoned from the band name. This still being Riverdale, a friend of Josie’s dad appears moments before she leaves town to tell her that her father may have been murdered in New Orleans, and that voodoo might be involved.
With this incredible/ridiculous plot development thrown at us, the full image of what The Pussycats will be as a series comes into view: A mixture of Fame and 13 Ghosts of Scooby-Doo that celebrates these characters and their comic/cartoon legacy in an unexpected way. (As an Archie comics historian even I was taken off guard by the last-minute introduction of the potential show’s mystery angle, and my mind reels at the possibilities).
Hopefully sooner rather than later a series order for The Pussycats will be announced. There is so much potential here to tell exciting, fun, music-packed stories featuring strong women of color that it feels like a surefire hit. “The Return of the Pussycats” is not only the best episode of Riverdale this season, but a perfect pilot episode. There desperately needs to be lots more long tails and ears for hats in our future, for these are the Pussycats we’ve been waiting for.

Riverdale Rundown
While nothing has been officially announced as of yet, it feels ridiculous for The CW to not do a full series of The Pussycats, yes? This logo appearing at the end of the episode instead of the usual Riverdale bumper bodes well for things to come. Fingers crossed…
My guess is that this episode didn’t have Alexandra and Josie cross paths due to their Katy Keene past, which had the characters begin as enemies who were slowly forming a friendship before that series was cancelled. By not having them interact, the writers didn’t have to figure out where their relationship currently is — making this a narrative thread that The Pussycats could potentially pull on down the line.
The character of Alan M. briefly appears as Melody’s love interest, which indeed he is in the comics and fondly remembered 2001 movie.
Speaking of the Josie and the Pussycats movie, that film’s ever-growing cult continues to delight me. Thanks to multiverses, there’s no reason why that version of these characters and the ones of The Pussycats can’t co-exist in the same pop culture landscape.
Let’s give a special shoutout to Robin Givens, who not only reprises her role as Sierra McCoy here but also did a terrific job directing this installment.
Melody narrates this episode a la Jughead, except that her writing is bright and full of hope, a sharp and intentional contrast to her brooding counterpoint.
If you didn’t cheer when Josie and the Pussycats took the stage to their cartoon theme song, you are dead inside.
“Entertainment Tomorrow” enters the Riverdale fake product lexicon in this episode (which also includes the returning chestnut “Vanity Flair”).
Toni gives birth to a boy, Anthony.
Expect to see more about the franchising of Pop’s in upcoming restaurants, and Tabitha’s speech about the importance of the Chok’lit Shoppe being a black-owned restaurant in a time when Riverdale had no other such establishments was one of the most powerful scenes this series has ever done.
It’s worth noting that a franchise for real-life Archie restaurants did exist in the early 1970s. However the idea never really took off, and pictures of the three diners that were opened have never surfaced online.
What the hell was up with the Old Navy product placement in this episode, which felt like it was ripped from the Josie and the Pussycats movie, minus the irony.
Kevin’s dancing during the Little Shop of Horrors musical number was, unsurprisingly, everything.
Melody’s book being named Summer Storm is a sly reference to actress Asha Bromfield having a newly released novel called Hurricane Summer that was released in May.
Josie uses the alias Ms. Newmar to check into hotels. Julie Newmar famously portrayed Catwoman on the Batman TV series, which not only plays into Josie’s feline motif, but also is yet another of the show’s near-constant DC Comics references of late.
Mr. Lodge being called a “little bitch” was so unbelievably pleasing to watch. Josie is just SO OVER Riverdale’s bullshit.
In a nice character moment, Cheryl immediately leaps into action to help deliver ex-lover Toni’s baby.
Dr. Curdle Jr. being a Josie and the Pussycats superfan is comedic brilliance (as is the fact that nobody trusts him enough to have him anywhere near Toni’s delivery.

Sharp-Dressed Man—1969 Chevy C10
While the design of a new vehicle might start with a clean sheet of white paper, the operative word for a classic is enhancement; taking what the factory created but using your own ideas to make it just a little better. Personalizing a vintage ride usually begins with eliminating the collection of dings and dents acquired in the past, followed by dispensing with anything that interrupts the truck’s clean lines. Gaps are tightened, holes are filled, and creativity comes into play with subtle additions. It takes a while and demands a careful blending imagination, skill, and cash before the finished product can begin its roll toward the winner’s circle.
Eugene Brown from Tabor City, North Carolina, is intimately familiar with the process since this C10 is the 12th in a long line of cool customs over the years. Eugene is the owner of a towing and recovery business with cars and trucks; not only a wonderful hobby but also a way to promote family bonding. He and his son built a custom truck together, started when “Little Willie” was 10 years old. The bright Sunset Orange 1984 Chevrolet has been highly successful on the show circuit for the last seven years and became motivation for Eugene to create another show vehicle of his own.
He found this 1969 Chevrolet C10 in North Carolina in fairly good shape. There were lots of initial changes planned for the truck but since Eugene is an old hand at creating unique custom vehicles, one of his first tasks was determining a theme. Uniquely, the influence for this one came from a popular ZZ Top video called “Sharp Dressed Man,” a song making the rounds when Eugene was a kid of 17. The “Male Fantasy Come to Life” theme was a dynamic combination featuring the chopped 1933 Ford known as the Eliminator, Billy Gibbons’ award-winning guitar riff, and the three beautiful girls who somehow squeezed inside the chopped coupe. Although Eugene’s Chevy doesn’t have the lightning bolt graphics or the famous lightning bolt key, his ride would share the bright red paintjob as well as a black and white interior, influenced by the tuxedo worn by both the star in the MTV video and coincidentally, by young son Willie on his way to the prom.
The adventure began with Eugene prepping the truck, handling much of the bodywork himself but usually trusting the finishing process to professionals. Since cool trucks need an equally cool profile, the Chevy gets considerably closer to the asphalt thanks to chassis mods and air suspension, beginning with a C-notch for clearance along with FAST bags activated by an EZ Air Ride compressor and 5-gallon reserve tank under the bed. Moog A-arms, sway bars, and GM power disc brakes stabilize the frontend. Refurbished drum brakes were added to the 10-bolt rear running 4.11 gears. Eibach shocks stabilize all four corners ensuring this ride can be at home cruising the highway or zipping through the cones at the local autocross.
Conservative body mods began with a 2-inch cowl induction hood, custom grille, and projection headlights that feature built in LED parking lights and turn signals. Accenting the original lines without creating too big a styling departure, the front and rear aftermarket bumpers were shortened and tucked to fit the contours of the truck. Since the Chevy was scheduled for a new LS powerplant with an EFI fuel system, the old, in-cab gas tank was trashed and a new baffled tank installed between the rear framerails. At the same time, a unique gas filler cap was added to the rear corner of the bed on the driver side. Eugene kept the bed clean, painting it to match the exterior and adding just a touch of black to the inner fender panels for contrast. Classic IROC wheels, one of his all-time favorites, were the perfect Chevy touch and as an added benefit they’re easy to clean. Lexani rubber plants the power.
Returning to the “Sharp Dressed Man” theme, Eugene smiles when he says his Bowtie’s interior has a distinctively formal look. The 60/40-split bench seat was reupholstered in black and white leather, giving the truck the look of a tuxedo. Door panels were stitched to match. The factory dash was updated with Dakota Digital instruments, featuring an analog look that was in keeping with the half-century-old truck as well as a modern, central digital message board. The aftermarket Old Air A/C keeps the cabin cool while the Kenwood KDC 355U stereo with its eight preset EQ curves and a three-band equalizer controls a mix of six speakers, entertaining driver and passenger with concert hall sounds.
There are obvious advantages to owning a towing and recovery business, not the least of which is access to some unique spare parts. Under the hood of Eugene’s truck is a 2002 Chevrolet LS V-8/4L60E combination, taken from a wrecked truck on his back lot. It doesn’t make any difference whether you’re popping the hood or flooring the accelerator, Chevy’s LS engine always makes an immediate impression. More than quick enough in stock form, the sharply dressed motor follows the same theme as the interior with its black and white motif. Accents include powdercoated valve covers that cover the coil packs, now featuring a New Creation logo. A K&N filter helps the engine inhale an unrestricted big gulp while Kook headers and Flowmaster mufflers rapidly dump spent gases. Everything under the hood was painted to match the exterior, the firewall was smoothed, and the inner fender panels were used to hide the wiring. A Ron Francis harness ensures that all the automotive elements are properly connected.
The final step was paint and although the video theme dictated a generic red, a family connection nailed down the exact shade. Eugene’s father has a 2004 Corvette painted Victory Red, which became the perfect choice for the rejuvenated truck. Brandon Nutter from Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, wrapped up the project, doing the final paint- and bodywork. The truck took two years to complete and was a part-time effort with Eugene dividing time between his own and his son’s truck. Underscoring the enthusiast nature of this family, the Browns have 15 vehicles at home with three belonging to young son Willie and 12 belonging to Eugene! Hey, a family that rides together certainly has fun together!

Meaty Beaty Big and Spendy: U.K. Music Legends Customize Rolls-Royce Wraiths
–
Nearly two years ago, we griped about the Rolls-Royce Wraith Inspired by Music, which seemed to us to be a lamentable co-opting of rock ’n’ roll’s hardscrabble roots. It seems that enough well-heeled vintage-guitar collectors disagreed with us, because now the British luxury arm of BMW is soldiering forth with a series of nine Wraiths designed by U.K. music legends. Six of the nine have been announced, and four have already been built.
–
–
Two of them are Roger Daltrey’s, and the proceeds from their sale will benefit the Teenage Cancer Trust. The first of the cars celebrates the Who, the Commander of the British Empire’s 53-year-old rock band. The dashboard clock features the band’s classic mod-target roundel logo, as does the leather “waterfall” between the two rear seats. And while lyrics from “Join Together” and “I Can See for Miles” find their way into the car’s design, we think the best touch is the embroidery of Keith Moon’s “Pictures of Lily” drum set, which was blown up at the end of a famous appearance on the Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour in 1967. Tom and Dick Smothers had requested that the band replicate their infamous instrument-destroying shtick on the show, so Moon, a man solidly of the excess-is-just-enough school, requested a pyro cannon be placed into one of his kick drums. The paltry cannon’s bang/poof during rehearsals wasn’t enough for the skinsman, so he requested more explosives—then added more of his own. The chaotic result, at the end of a performance of “My Generation,” singed Pete Townshend’s hair and damaged his hearing.
–
The second of Daltrey’s automobiles pays tribute to Tommy, the band’s landmark concept album from 1969. Most notably, the car features an airbrushed rendition of the record’s cover on the hood, a flight of fancy that would do Greg of Akron proud. Inside, each headrest is embroidered with a motif relating to the album art, while the rear-seat waterfall features a pinball machine in reference to Tommy’s classic track, “Pinball Wizard.” By 1969, the Who were no longer spitting out maximum R&B and had moved on to a sort of grandeur that would set the stage for the next decade of arena rock. And nothing evokes “arena rock” like album art airbrushed on your muscular coupe’s hood.
–
–
Ray Davies of the Kinks, famed for writing great pop songs and feuding with his brother Dave, has contributed a Wraith to the mix as well. The Davies car isn’t quite as radical as the Tommy machine, although we do hope its eventual buyer adds a bumper sticker noting the owner’s membership in the Village Green Preservation Society. Aside from Davies’s signature on the headrests and a Kinks logo on the waterfall, Davies put his touch on the car’s included pair of umbrellas. Each brolly is engraved with the line, “When it’s raining on a sunny afternoon in the summertime,” paraphrasing the 1966 single “Sunny Afternoon.”
–
–
Giles Martin, son of Sir George Martin, the man responsible for the Beatles’ studio wizardry, teamed up with Rolls to honor his late father, who passed away in 2016. Martin’s collaboration with the Beatles pushed recorded audio in directions never before attempted and set the stage for the huge recorded productions of the 1970s. The Martin Wraith features the titles of his 30 number-one singles embroidered in the waterfall, while his signature is stitched into the headrests. The proceeds from the sale of this car will benefit the Fly Navy Heritage Trust, which restores and flies classic Royal Navy aircraft.
–
Dame Shirley Bassey, whom you may remember from her three James Bond theme songs—one of which, “Goldfinger,” was recorded with Sir George Martin—celebrates her 37 studio albums and her grand total of 79 weeks in the British top-10 charts. The headrest embroidery recalls her 2007 album, Get The Party Started, while the diamond embroidered in the waterfall commemorates her performance of the theme from 1971’s Diamonds Are Forever. The doorsills and the Spirit of Ecstasy hood ornament are finished in gold in a nod to one Auric Goldfinger, who famously traveled in a gold-bodied Phantom III.

Rolls has announced two more automobiles in the series: one, a collaboration with Status Quo frontman Francis Rossi, will feature Fender Telecasters embroidered in the headrests. We’ll be sorely disappointed if the car doesn’t also come with a full denim interior. Longtime Rolling Stones and former Faces guitarist Ronnie Wood has been given the chance to celebrate his solo career. His upcoming Wraith will serve as a tribute to his 2010 solo album, I Feel Like Playing.
–
Somehow, we find all this silliness appropriate. Martin was a studio nerd without equal. Daltrey has been a rocker of the masses far longer than he was a manic Mod. Wood has played with both Rod Stewart and Mick Jagger, both proponents of the rock-’n’-roll good life. These are successful, creative people who’ve spent a lifetime in the arts and reaped major financial rewards for it. At 67, Rossi is the youngest of those honored here, while Bassey, at 80, is the oldest. It’s opulence by senior citizens for senior citizens. We’ll not remind you that perhaps the best-known line Daltrey ever spat out was, “I hope I die before I get old.” After all, that was 52 years ago.
