The air grew silent as only Zhongli’s eyes moved to meet Childe’s. His fists were clenched at his sides, brows furrowed in obvious annoyance.

“You’ve been going out of your way to take lead against any obstacle we face. There hasn’t been a moment of rest since we’ve come out here. If you were to just take me seriously we could have been there by now.” Childe’s eyes shifted to the ground. “I know I’m no archon, but-“ in that moment, Zhongli had moved to instantly stand an inch or so right in front of Childe. Childe found himself holding his breath, eyes wide.

“Never utter those words again.” Zhongli’s tone was stern and cold, as if he had been the one to have been insulted. “You mean more to me then..” his voice trailed as he fully processed the start of his scolding. “…you’re worth more to this operation then I. You’re to be well prepared for when we finally face what’s ahead.” Becoming aware of the space Zhongli left between them, practically none, he took a gradual step back. “I hold value to your words and tactics Childe, do not be mistaken. I might have gotten carried away.” Childe blinked for a moment before a conceding smile came to his face.

“I appreciate that. However you’re fully aware of how I don’t need defending. Right now we’re a team, not a contract,” he chimed as he began to walk on ahead. Zhongli followed him with his eyes, gave a smirk and a shake of his head. He soon followed to match his stride.
