007 fest headcanon week: the one time james bond and alex turner fight

00qad verse (any variation)

******************spoilers ahead for london spy*******************

-its been nearly five years since james saved alex’s life, but they’ve never really talked about it. james tries to initiate a discussion sometimes, but alex has experienced too much trauma to want to talk about what happened. it doesn’t help that he’s an introvert who keeps to himself. he also really just wants to forget, because forgetting is what he thinks will help him move on. 

-james is retired now. he’s older, he’s slowed down, he’s spending most of his time at home - especially under COVID-19 isolation precautions, given his myriad of underlying conditions. so he has a lot more time to think and reflect. no better time than the present, when they’re all stuck at home together, to ask what he’s always wanted to know. because let’s face it, quarantine has tested every relationship, whether platonic or romantic. 

-one april evening as they’re all eating dinner, after q had spent the better part of the meal praising alex for all the technical solutions he’d presented to q-branch that day (and how immensely helpful he is every day, really) james just spits out the question. 

so turner why is it that you were so reckless with your lie detection software that you put everyone you knew at risk? 

-the house goes silent. q and danny look on, words escaping them. alex looks up from his plate, feeling the heat across his face, feeling like he was just ambushed because this is not something he prepared for. and alex always prepares. 

-james insists it’s time to talk about it. danny pleads with him not to force alex to relive the experience. q tries to deescalate. alex remains quiet. when he’s finished his food, he gets up, puts his plate and utensils in the dishwasher, all the while saying nothing. not here are the only two words he manages before he motions to james to follow him to the library. 

-alex closes the door before turning to james

what do you want to know? it’s not fair to danny and q to have to hear this again

you owe us - you owe me - an explanation. i put my job at risk for you and i deserve to know why you did what you did

why now? because i’m rising through six? does that bother you? that i get nods of approval from every department? i don’t want attention i just want to contribute--

turner, i’m not... i’m not trying to hold you back i’m just trying to understand what happened--

because you think i’ll do it again? am i really the problem here, james? 

no, that’s not what i said--

but you thought it. you’ve thought about it.

turner--

you try being in my shoes and living every day of your life wondering how you can ever repay the man who literally saved you from a gruesome death. it’s a weight i will carry with me forever. i’m not ashamed of my lie detector, but i am ashamed that i can never fully express my gratitude to you 

YOU CAN! YOU ARE! i mean i dont need you to thank me i just need to know why you did it and what on earth you got out of it. i NEVER have time to talk to you with your schedule. and you NEVER want to open up to me. its been years turner, this can’t keep happening. you have no idea what hoops q had to jump through to get me down to that flat just in time and--

well it took me a long time to realize my actions were borne out of cowardice not bravery. but you... you were so brave so young, and to challenge an entire global institution... you didn’t even know what you were doing, did you? 

what are you suggesting?

that you were naive. that it was stupid. and that you need to admit that you made a monumental mistake but that you learned from it--

-alex shakes his head and leaves the library, making a beeline for the front door. he needs fresh air, and he doesn’t return for a couple of hours. he doesn’t remember ever raising his voice like that at anyone. he’s exhausted. he hates confrontation. and he’s always secretly wanted james’ approval more than anyone else’s. it hurts.

-on his way home, well past his bedtime, he texts james the only 4 words he’ll ever need to know:

you can trust me

-naturally, james is awake and responds:

‘Alex’s quarantine birthday’

requested by my fellow villain The Forge / @a-forger-and-a-point-man

They all forgot. Who would blame them, they were still in lockdown, no end in sight. They had lost track of dates a while ago, it still felt like May or even April. So when 23 June rolled around no one noticed, not even Alex himself, it was just a day like every other. To him, his birthday was not that important anyway. The four of them would just try to stay busy just like they did last week and the week before that and so on. Q was tinkering away, James was usually in the garden or running around after Pam, Danny would go from crafty things to baking to knitting and back in the same afternoon, while Alex tried to read or figure out new programs that would be beneficial to Q-Branch. They would go on walks in any imaginable constellation really.

When a day later birthday cards from Alex’s mothers arrived, Q went to check the calendar. Oops. Alex didn’t mind that they didn’t celebrate, it was just a day like any other.

However, the other three couldn’t just leave it at that. They planned a nice day out or whatever that meant within the current restrictions. Q was in charge of figuring out a route for their walk. James was responsible to put the picnic together. Danny made the cake and decorations. 

So a couple of days later when Alex woke up early (as usual) and nobody was in bed he got suspicious. The living room was decorated? The other three were in the kitchen waiting with breakfast? What was this? 

“Happy belated birthday, love” Danny said and came around to kiss Alex on the cheek. Alex blushed as he really wasn’t expecting anything, “you didn’t have to”  “We wanted to and you deserve it”  That was that. 

They went on a long country walk, took an extensive break in a nice spot to enjoy the picnic (there was a lot of cheese of course). It was gorgeous.  When they got home late in the afternoon they had cake for dinner, and lounged around in the living room.  Somebody ran Alex a bath, so he could relax and do his own quiet contemplating and processing the day. It had been a perfect unexpected day and this was a lovely way to end it.

headcanon: how alex turner became 009

-the son of former agent frances turner was a brilliant young codebreaker whose secret research into a foolproof lie detector was deemed too costly and risky for mi6, especially after alex was almost killed when spectre went after his hard drive

-at q’s request, the best of her majesty’s secret service, 007, was sent out to retrieve him and the research was - at least officially - abandoned. it was reckless to risk a double-oh’s life to rescue a junior-level q-branch researcher, but there was no way q was going to sacrifice one of the most outstanding minds he has ever come across in his department. it certainly helped that he lived with said double-oh, and could persuade him to do anything after a good late night shag

-q also understood alex’s experience - he too was kidnapped and nearly killed when spectre went after his early renderings of the smartblood program. he vowed to protect his team of innovators and pioneers at all costs

-alex was hospitalized and treated accordingly but he was never the same after the incident. both his identity and his life were nearly compromised. he was also heartbroken by the way he was forced to abandon his civilian boyfriend, so as not to reveal his actual profession or risk danny’s safety. furthermore, frances never called to check up on him. strangely enough, it was after his rescue that he felt more abandoned than ever 

-q visited alex’s room in medical often, and also went to his new flat with tea and cake to check up on him. the two of them bonded over their shared love of algorithms and discreet gadgetry, but perhaps more importantly, their harrowing experiences with spectre. they also exchanged mind-boggling stories about the white persian cat they encountered, and they could have sworn she was hissing orders at the henchmen

-q could relax in these settings, because in q-branch he couldn’t openly favor some team members over others - but here he all but confessed that alex was his favorite. the two of them were also close in age, with q being only four years older

-it wasn’t long before alex asked q about his relationship with “the legendary and infamous” 007. alex was too smart not to have known anyway, q figured. that was when q finally - finally - asked about danny. he could see the pain and longing in alex’s eyes, even almost a year on. he thought about all those times he himself lay awake at night, paralyzed by fear and heartbreak and resentment, when james bond was presumed dead. if q felt justified being the romantic partner of a double-oh agent, then alex deserved to be allowed contact - and perhaps a chance at love again - with a civilian like danny 

-q was going to help make that happen, because unbeknownst to mi6 (with the exception of m) q was also a holt. danny happened to be his half-brother [alternative headcanon: the two of them crossed paths as children, but the bottom line is that danny is definitely no stranger to q]

-when alex resumed shifts in q-branch he had trouble readjusting. he felt stared at, pitied, and gossiped about. while q always did his best as a department head to boost morale and promote collaboration, q-branch was a highly competitive place with extremely ambitious people. it also didn’t help that like other sections of mi6, q-branch was a place full of secrets, because different people had different levels of security clearance based on assessments, recommendations, and assignments from q and m. members of q-branch didn’t know exactly who was given a particular kind of green light except for the higher-ups

-when an opportunity opened up for the role of a junior-level agent, q approached alex, and then quietly recommended him to m. while mi6 never confirmed its operations, this was a role that was on the books; a role the public knew existed. the service officially had some 3500 agents around the world who worked in the shadows for decades, patiently collecting intelligence. while they were all heavily trained for violent scenarios, most did not encounter them

-it was agreed that alex was the perfect candidate - he enjoyed working alone, and he was very good at being invisible, despite his immense loneliness. it was all he had known, except for the 8 months he was with danny. but until it was safe for danny to be back in his life, and until q was able to work out a way to make that happen, alex needed a change of pace. he needed to get busy, feel useful, and m even went as far as to tell q in private that alex was “practically an orphan anyway”

-the next thing he knew, alex was on a flight out to washington, dc, where he met with “old friend to 007,” felix leiter. he was given an orientation and issued a new identity, and spent the next 6 months prowling the nation’s capital collecting information on lobbyists looking to severely undermine trade relations with the united kingdom following the brexit vote

-when he returned, q sent him coordinates to meet at the place where no one cares. of course danny would have located a spot overlooked even by six, q thought. he was impressed. danny had his own way of working in the shadows

-the first time alex killed a man was not in self-defense, nor was it to pry something from his dead hands. alex killed a man because it was the easy thing to do. it was easy to frame someone else. it was liberating to know he wouldn’t have to worry about this man’s suspicions or motives anymore - and that he would get away with it [source: fleming points out in casino royale that “you've had to kill a chap in cold blood in the course of some assignment” to obtain double-oh status]

-the trauma caught up with him fast when he came home, but he’d seen too much on his travels and missions to care about anything but his job, and danny. danny was his life. if he felt his career or personal life were remotely threatened, then surely he was justified in making his first kill

-danny knew something was different. there was nothing alex could hide from danny. and naturally, alex had also confessed to q, because his weapon had obviously been discharged. it was only then that q explained what one more kill could mean for alex, and how it could change his life - a life that alex would probably not want. a life that he surely couldn’t handle 

-alex was a reluctant killer. he had nightmares. it wasn’t who he was. he started telling himself that people were not the sum of their actions, but the sum of their convictions. “that’s what james says,” q later told him 

-the second kill came three months later, entirely unplanned and again not in self-defense. but if alex deemed the man a traitor, and if alex was going to earn his license to kill anyway, then so be it. he offed him and never looked back

-his promotion was not announced. he officially no longer existed at six. double-ohs don’t know the identities of their colleagues, so that the information is not compromised under duress or torture 

-one night, while the four of them were out to dinner, james complained that q had made him sleep on the couch after he lost three very expensive prototypes in the field. “he then ever so kindly made me a watch,” james said, “and customized a stunning db10 for bloody 009, who probably won’t even appreciate it.” 

alex looked at q and smiled, then counted down from 5 in his head... sure enough, on cue, he could count on danny to say something he shouldn’t. but at least he only did it on their dates together. danny’s favorite people may be spies, but danny didn’t want any secrets between them.

random 00qad headcanons

because there aren’t enough of them and someone has to save this fandom from sinking into the abyss

-danny is precious and protected at all times by the other three mi6ers

-he deserves a nice, quiet, comfortable life in a nice house and not having to work for money for a little bit, so he takes care of all the cats and takes up knitting and baking and bikram yoga 

-as a result all the moms in the neighborhood know danny and they wave to each other and catch up during grocery runs and park walks

-even tanner and moneypenny call to check on danny, who sends them fresh baked goodies in return

-at one point danny fed all of q-branch

-danny makes comfort food and sweets, but james is the gourmet chef when he’s at home

-alex is the therapist in the relationship because he’s a great listener, he doesn’t say much, he is patient and compassionate, and he always provides hugs and blankets and chocolate

-this also means alex knows little secrets about the other three that they won’t necessarily tell each other

-when q is home, it’s extremely difficult to detach the cats from him... it’s some sort of static cling, so human cuddle time with q is usually shared 

-james is a fucking liar because he enjoys petting kitties when there’s nobody home

-did i mention james lies about hating cats

-james makes sure the cats get turkey legs at christmas before the others are served dinner

Bond’s Breakfast Part 2 - Alex

When they first met Alex and James had a tricky relationship. James had saved his life but they still felt wary around each other. James’ usual flirtatious charm offensive fell flat because Alex could see straight through him and just stared at him owlishly in that way Alex does when he’s making you out. 

Soon mutual respect developed they were both Agents after all Although in very different ways and on very different missions. James helps Alex improve his shooting range scores until he was no longer at the bottom of the league table Alex help him with technical elements of his mission that Q simply didn’t have the time or the patience explain. 

Alex loves to run so sometimes they’d run together but other times “I’m going for a run” meant “I need space” and James would nod at Alex and distract Q or Danny. 

Affection and intimacy between them were harder won but eventually, they found there own ways to show they cared. James took Alex cheese shopping introducing him to some of the more indulgent things in life. While through Alex, James found he understood Q better and more equipment got returned. Which meant fewer rows and that made everyone happier.

Alex’ 2-ingredient pancakes

Breakfast foods are an important and serious business in the 00qad household

Q likes breakfast food no matter what time of day it is (cereal is always a good choice for a quick and nutritious meal in his opinion).  James appreciates a brunch, taking his time to fry up something special. For Danny and Alex making breakfast holds a particular meaning. So Alex adapts a recipe he used to make a lot for himself, it is great for post running, protein and a bit of sugar. Plus it’s only two ingredients and the easiest and quickest thing ever (and gluten-free).

As discussed on slack a while ago, the guys would go to the market and bring the cats, and of course Q would let Pam taste all the ice cream. So Alex shares his with Turning <3  (they’re just having a tiny taste. Cats should not have too much dairy or sugar, as far as I am aware)

Also posting this for @a-forger-and-a-point-man as she absolutely loved it yesterday when I sent it to her <3 She’s always so supportive and encouraging of everybody, so this is my contribution to  #supportiveSundays even though it’s a bit different.  ^This also goes for everybody in the 00qad fandom btw!

WHAT??? cas??? i was not aware of this??? you haven’t seen london spy??? omg. @10kiaoi and you will have to watch at least the first 40 mins of episode 1 with me at some point. just to set the scene should u guys wanna read the fics and stuff. 

also here’s what i was thinking after the kingsman 2 trailer...

so when alex is brought back from america after a year - because q-branch needs his expertise - he becomes one of q’s top boffins, and then 00qad is born. 

then there’s a freak accident which i don’t even want to think about too much because poor alex. has life not been hard enough?

this changes him tremendously. he also becomes q’s guinea pig... there’s groundbreaking work going on to create a bionic arm for him....

through a certain turn of events, he puts the bionic arm to use in the field. he becomes a very deadly agent, and that’s what brings us to earning the 009 badge

(the only thing i can’t shake off is how much danny will have cried throughout this entire ordeal)

(he’s still crying now because “what do you mean you killed people, alex???”)

well you guys know what this means, we now need an angsty 00qad fic in which alex needs bionic arms engineered by q
