My husband and I saw Wonder Woman last night.
We’re both big fans, Diana’s the only reason he managed to talk me into seeing Captain Grumpy Bats vs Space Jesus.
I am not a fan of DC’s current big screen movie line up. I would much rather watch their animated movies. DC’s animation department has been going pretty strong since Batman the animated series back in the 90s. If you were as disappointed as I was with the big screen films, go watch the animated ones instead.
Alright, moving on.
I was genuinely excited to see more of Wonder Woman. I was even more determined to see it after I found out the director was also a woman. Fuck yes I was going to support the shit out of this movie.
I am bloody sick and tired of projects being taken away from women and given to men on the dead horse of an excuse that men have more experience with this sort of thing.
Now I’m about to get spoilery and I’m also going to give my honest review of this movie including criticisms and what I think they could have done better. Soooo....
There were lot’s of things that I loved ranging from little things to the big obvious ones.
Diana squeeing over babies while they were tromping around London.
Steve playfully wiggling his toes in the cool glowy healing hot springs of awesome.
Diana checking herself out in a mirror and being pleased with how smart she looked in that bad ass suit and glasses. (Both my husband and I have a thing about glasses) also I want that suit.
Speaking of outfits....That. Blue. Dress.
Diana’s perception and reflexes being heightened (you know because of reasons) that she can see bullets and that’s why she can block them.
Every Diana fight scene.
And greatest of all a climatic moment not based in a fight but in an overwhelmingly good character having their world view shattered, leaving them questioning their deepest and most sacred beliefs.
Now for the unpopular opinion:
I think Wonder Woman could have been so much better.
I’m hoping that the majority of problems I had with the film are due to editing. When it comes out I want to get my hands on the extended scenes to get a sense of what hit the editing room floor.
Now, I cry a lot in moves. It is not hard to move me to tears.
I did not cry in Wonder Woman. The closest I came was when they arrived at the front and Diana was being bombarded with the absolute devastation around her. A scene like that, I should have been bawling my damn eyes out... but I wasn’t, and I didn’t. That’s a big problem. I also didn’t shed a tear for Steve’s heroic sacrifice right before Diana goes super saiyan. To compare; Steve Rogers and Peggy Carter’s final exchange was a much heavier blow. I gave a shit about those two. which leads me to my next problem.
Chis Pine is pretty. Those baby blues are bloody striking and he had some good lines in this film, both inspiring and funny. Not too shabby as a leading man. My problem? He and Gal Gadot had lousy chemistry on screen. In several scenes I swear I could see her thinking. “I just want to kill Aries, why are you making this weird?”
If anything I saw more chemistry and character development between Diana and Sameer. I loved watching “Wow, your gorgeous.” turn into “holly shit you are amazing and intimidating as fuck! Can I be on your team?”
I needed more scenes with Diana and Steve giving a shit about each other, and I’m not talking about the whole “Man keep woman safe.” bullshit. Or even worse Steve actually dragging Diana around and telling her to stay put when he knows full damn well just how bad ass she is.
I’m talking about them having each others backs. I needed a few more scenes where Steve actually developed beyond “wow, your pretty.” and talked with Diana and having faith in her abilities as a fighter and a competent, if rather sheltered, human being. Sweet as it was, dancing in the snow was not enough to cut it in my world.
Speaking of communication; I also needed more between Hippolyta and Antiope concerning keeping Diana in the dark about her heritage. I needed them to have a proper discussion about Diana’s world view still being the bedtime story version of events. I would have loved to see two women arguing the sides of preserving a child's innocence vs preparing a child for everything the world could throw at her.
On another note, how great would it have been for Diana and Etta to have a real chat during the whole makeover thing. Please for the love of Alison Bechdel, talk about women’s rites and combining practicality with style in clothing. Hell, since I’m dreaming, go for the extra adorable factor and have Etta flirt a little and Diana be 1000% cool with flirting right back.
Seriously, this conservative attitude that Hollywood keeps pumping out is so painfully outdated, old and tired. The greatest irony for me was hearing Saïd Taghmaoui’s charecter drop the line of wanting to be an actor but being the wrong colour in a film set in the first world war, and then seeing the big bad GREEK god Aries being played by David Thewlis. Don’t get me wrong I’ve loved David Thewlis as a villain since Dragonheart. I even would have been cool with him as the big bad if they had showed him shape shifting into different people over the eons in order to spread his influence. The second they kept his mustachioed British mug as the actual face of a Greek god.... I was done.
Okay now that I’ve gotten all that off my chest I will say that Wonder Woman is the best film in DC’s recent line up and The best female superhero movie I have seen to date. This was a huge leap forward and I definitely want to continue to support this film in the hope that we keep moving forward and get to see more films with amazing women as the lead both behind and in front of the camera.
