“A woman in Africa told me the story of how the world came to be. She said, first there was the sun, but it had no one to shine on.”
After countless more kisses from David and being held so tightly against him, as if he needed to make sure you were still in one piece, he finally helped you slip back into your cozy sweater, which sleeves you pulled over your hands so you were fully engulfed by it. Then, he escorted you to a room where everyone had gathered. Elizabeth stood at the center, recounting a story from one of her journeys, her audience including crew members whose names you had yet to learn. Dimmed lights lent the cool-toned ship a surprising sense of warmth, further softened by Janek’s little Christmas tree adorning the table. You stayed close to David, unwilling to leave his side just yet, your fingers wrapped tightly around the glass in your hand, someone gave it to you when you entered.
“So the sun made man. And man looked up at the sun and asked: Why did you make me? And the sun said: Because I was alone.”
As you absorbed those words, your gaze flickered briefly to David, standing beside you like a statue, his posture perfectly straight. Was that why he was created, too? Was Peter Weyland lonely? Could that really be the reason he built something so close to a human - not just to a human, but to a person? In the two quiet nights you spent together, the two of you talked about the things you liked. He told you about his admiration for Lawrence of Arabia, and you shared your favorite music. He described the foods he preferred to consume, while you confessed your dislike for certain textures. You reminisced about your grandmother, how she could fold tiny figures from any scrap of paper and made lucky stars just for you. He had paused then, looked up at the ceiling, as if searching through his memory. He told you how Meredith once broke an expensive vase and came to him for help hiding the shards from their father. Or how, when she was very little, she would sneak him into her room, sit him down, and gleefully smear red lipstick across his face while giggling at the mess she made. Before the tiny girl started to grow up and despise him. Yes, his exterior was a flawless imitation, but inside, he wasn’t far off either. If anything, in some moments, he seemed more human than others.
“My whole life, I looked for what we found today. We’re not alone anymore. Cheers.”
Elizabeth ended her speech, and as everyone raised their glasses in a toast, you followed suit. Taking a sip, you immediately scrunched your face in reaction to the bitter alcohol. A laugh and a hearty clap on your back jolted your eyes open, still grimacing from the taste. Standing in front of you was Janek, grinning.
“Too strong, kid?” he asked, his voice laced with amusement. “Hey, I’m not a kid. I just don’t like this stuff,” you retorted, scanning the room for a spot to set your drink down. “Sure, sure,” he chuckled. “It’s impressive how you’ll follow people into storms, but a little whiskey is your end boss.” Pulling you into his side, he rubbed a reassuring hand over your back. His presence made you feel small, though not in a bad way. “That was brave of you,” he continued. “And as much as I respect that, David here was literally built for stuff like this, weren’t you?” He gestured to the blond android, who nodded in silent agreement.
“Alright, alright, I know,” you sighed. “He already gave me a lecture about it. But I wasn’t thinking. I saw Elizabeth fall, and I just… I had to try, you know?” Elizabeth approached then, with a soft smile. “And I appreciate that,” she said earnestly. “Thanks to you, I was able to hold on to the head. We saved proof that they were here, that they existed - and the only chance we have to figure out what killed them.”
From the corner, Holloway’s voice broke through, dripping with disdain. “But who cares what killed them, right?” He sauntered over, his expression sour, while Elizabeth snapped her head towards him. “What is wrong with you?” she shot back, her frustration clear. He snorted, the sound edged with bitterness. “Elli, they’re dead. All of them. So what does it matter? It means we’re still alone. And because of that stupid head, you could’ve died. (Y/N) here risked herself for it, too.”
With that, he snatched the glass from your hand and downed the rest of your drink in one gulp. You opened your mouth to respond, caught off guard by his sudden concern for you, but before you could speak, Dr. Ford poked her head into the room. “Doctors, the specimen is prepped,” she announced curtly.
In that pause, your eyes scanned the room, and that’s when you noticed something. Your boys were missing from this little assembly.
“Uh… where are Millburn and Fifield?” you asked, your voice cutting through the uneasy quiet. A few guilty glances darted your way, but no one spoke until Janek finally broke the silence. “They’re still in that structure.”
It was probably a good thing Holloway had taken your glass earlier, because if it had still been in your hand, it would’ve shattered on the floor. “They’re WHAT?!” The panic that had mostly subsided came crashing back, tightening its grip on you. Worry flooded every corner of your mind, Millburn and Fifield were still out there, trapped in that pyramid of death.
“Why didn’t anyone tell me?!” you demanded, your voice rising. “Why weren’t they in the van? How could you just drive off without them?!” Your frustration finally found its target, and you pointed an accusing finger at the guy you thought was named Robin.
Before you could escalate further, a familiar hand rested firmly on your shoulder. Once again, it was Janek, his calm presence grounding you. “Hey, kid, you were in shock when you got back,” he explained gently. “There wasn’t time to tell you. David carried you out before we even realized that they were not with you. But it’s okay - we’ve got contact with them through the intercom, and we’re tracking their signals. Wanna come to the cockpit with me?”
Still tempted to chew Robin out for leaving without the others, you forced yourself to calm down. You nodded reluctantly, glancing back at David and the others, who were already preparing to go examine the head.
A derisive scoff broke the moment. “Oh, please,” Holloway said, his voice sneering. “No need to hold back anymore. Everyone knows you’re with Robo-boy.” He gestured vaguely in David’s direction, and Elizabeth responded with a sharp slap to his arm. “Charlie!” she scolded, her tone harsh. “What? It’s the truth,” he muttered before walking out of the room, leaving you biting the inside of your cheek in embarrassment.
But, you turned back to David and wrapped your arms around him in a firm hug, your worry still bubbling beneath the surface. “Be careful, okay? Whatever killed them, it could be some kind of bacteria, like those frozen mammoths they found back then,” you said, your voice quiet and you had to stop yourself from rambling about all the different possibilities.
David simply leaned down and pressed a kiss to your forehead, a gesture meant to calm you down again.
If you’d had eyes in the back of your head, you might’ve caught the sharp lift of Vickers’ eyebrow at the sight.
Janek let you take his Captain-seat, giving you a clear view of the screen showing their camera feeds. It made you feel a bit like a child allowed to sit in a firetruck for the first time. He patiently showed you some buttons - how to switch between camera angles, enlarge a specific feed, and, most importantly, how to use the comms. You leaned closer to the microphone. “Fifield? Millburn? Do you hear me?”
On the screen, you saw them stop and exchange a glance before Millburn answered, “Yes, we hear you, (Y/N).” Relief washed over you, and you exhaled a long sigh. “How are you? Are you okay? Did you get lost?” “Obviously,” Fifield grumbled, throwing Millburn a sharp look. “Someone pointed us in the wrong direction.” “Hey!” Millburn shot back. “It’s not like you realized it was the wrong way either!”
A small smile tugged at your lips. Their bickering was strangely comforting, it meant they were well enough to argue.
“At least I’m not the idiot who sniffed some old rags he found,” Fifield quipped. That made you sit up straighter, frowning. “Wait, what?” “There was some kind of tissue on the ground, and Millburn sniffed it,” Fifield replied, unable to hide his grossed out amusement. “So what?” Millburn defended himself. “I had to test it!” “Millburn,” you groaned, letting your head fall into your hands. “Stop putting your nose in strange alien things, for god’s sake!” Fifield’s chuckle crackled through the speaker.
You straightened up and spoke with determination, “I’ll stay on the line with you, okay? I’ll keep an eye on you.” “Botany, we’re grown men,” Fifield replied, and you could practically hear him rolling his eyes. “Go to sleep.”You shook your head, even though they couldn’t see it.
“No. I’ll stay.”
