Solitaire by Alice Oseman

Guys. I have listened to the solitaire audiobook all the way through, everyday for the past two weeks. I’ve been feeling my mental health plummet into the ground, and this book makes me feel seen. I don’t feel alone. Tori and Michael are so real and relatable and I love their friendship and their love so much. Alice really knew what she was doing when she was writing this novel. It’s so well written and every word is so important. Idk. That’s all I wanted to say ig. I love this book so so much.

ok so i read heartstopper vol 5 and while it was nice to have tori spring canonically say "i am asexual" (followed by the 'most people dont get it') i am so confused with where solitare takes place in this timeline in the sense that the major event at the end of solitare hasnt happened yet (or has it) but like charlie is in a better place and appears to be recovering unlike in solitare

What Alice Oseman has said about the Ferris wheel scene

Apparently, Alice Oseman (@chronicintrovert) already said in May that the dialogue between Tori and Charlie would be different in the show and Tori's asexuality would only be explored in S4 (which has not been confirmed yet):

Not only that, Alice also referenced Tori's aceness in this Netflix Tudum article from a couple of days ago:

Although many Heartstopper couples are leaning into their relationships, one pair is in a bit of a gray area: Charlie’s sister, Tori (Jenny Walser), and her friend Michael (Darragh Hand). In the finale, we learn Michael is ready to call Tori his girlfriend, and Tori isn’t so sure. Even Charlie is confused about why Tori won’t say yes.  Oseman says that the answer to Charlie’s question lies in her fifth Heartstopper novel, which the show hasn’t caught up to. In Volume 5, Tori tells Charlie that she believes she’s asexual. “This is why she has been quite confused by her relationship with Michael,” Oseman explains. “She clearly cares about and loves Michael a lot. But she doesn’t really know whether it counts as a relationship or not.” 

So I hope that reassures those who are understandably worried that her aceness might have been erased from the show!

Personally, I think this is the better choice from both a storytelling and a representation perspective. Having her come out to Charlie on the Ferris wheel would have delighted those of us who already had more context for her character and relationship with Michael, but for the show-only fans, it would have come completely out of the blue. It would have felt more like lip service/ticking a box than actually portraying a new queer identity, because we saw very little of her and Michael's relationship and none of her feelings on it yet.

Also, the events of Solitaire don't seem to be canon in the show (as their first meeting was changed and they are clearly still going to Higgs), so the context we do have may not be fully applicable anyway. I for one am excited to see a new version of Tori and Sprolden unfold on my screen when S4 rolls around!

Perhaps we might even get to see the two ace stories converge, as the camerawork in the finale certainly seemed to hint at that.

i just finished reading solitaire yesterday (ty hurricane milton for taking my power for like 3 days) and i'm genuinely shocked on how much of it was not in season 3 of heartstopper?? like the only thing shown was the kitchen scene and that was only shown through the lense of the comics themselves, not solitaire. like the show didnt even mention that higgs was literally set on fire; i think that was big enough for at least a mention or something

my guess is that there is a good chance that alice is fighting for a solitaire movie of some sort, cause the events dont clash with the heartstopper timeline much. ik alice holds solitaire so closely to her, as it was her first work, and because tori was her first developed character, so I can't think of another reason it wasn't in the show

The deeper meaning of the osemanverse books and how they can be used to teach teenagers morals - An Essay

Okay, so. The osemanverse is a very in-depth universe. we have places, we have names, we have schools, we can take any village in kent and basically apply the town of truham to it. Unlike most stories about morals aimed at teens, the characters are relatable. we have teens struggling with mental health, bullying and a whole set of real-world issues teens face. we also and some element of chaos that the average teen might not experience. For example, the solitare pranksters. BUT, even the pranksters have some element of moral. They're trying to get people see the light in a dark place, high school, but they fuck UP. Even after several years, they are still not forgiven, with higgs still being under repairs and the historic grounds probably never being fully restored, this resemebles how, even after years and therapy and healing, some scars will run deeper then you can imagine. Radio silence has a over acheiving secret fan geek who's almost completely burnt out, and a burnt out queer person who makes a podcast and his mother is abusive. Sadly, a lot of teens have less than ideal parents, including myself, and having a character who represents you, has problems like yours, and trys to fix them? That can give teens hope, and hope is a rare thing, with dirt on it's knees. Loveless is about a girl who struggles to find herself, causing harm to herself and others. she tries on different personas, trying to see if one fits, but none do. when she finds one that fits, she realises how much damage has occured and tries to fix it. The people she's hurt take a while to forgive her, which is good! Healing takes time.

What are teens afraid of doing? Fucking up. Yes, most YA novels focus on the fuck ups, but Alice Oseman really illustrates how gut wrenching it is to fuck up, and eventually, you heal. Healing takes time, Healing isn't linear, and of course, finding yourself is the most important thing you can do.

Things in the Heartstopper Show that Just Don’t Make Sense (from someone who loves Heartstopper)

1. Charlie being portrayed as an outcast when he was actually fairly popular and well-liked

2. Issac in general. Alice has said that they have Issac instead of Aled so he can have his own story, but I don’t think putting Aled in the show would detract from that at all, especially since he doesn’t have a huge roll in the comics. Also, Issac reading at the most inappropriate times!! I’m a huge reader, but reading during class, parties, and other social events is definitely rude. And I’m saying this as an introvert. Go on your phone.

3. Tao being straight up antagonistic towards Nick and ride to Charlie. In the comics he was rude at most, but in the show he just seems like a dick. Also the whole thing with him having abandonment issues because of his dad is kind of strange. He didn’t abandon Tao, he died. That’s completely different from friends falling out of touch or having arguments. I’m saying this as someone whose dad has also died.

4. Olivia Colman. Why would she agree to do the show if she didn’t know if she could stay for more seasons or fit it in her schedule? It just looks like Sarah disappeared off the face of the earth now.

5. Imogen in season 1 + 2. The fact that they made her date Ben just for drama and have a crush on Nick. I get that it’s part of her comp het, but I really think she just dated Ben so the show would have more drama.

6. I don’t know why, but I think Elle just seems meaner in the show? Also, why would she transfer to Higgs one year just to go to Lambert the next?
