The Kiss : Elvis with a fan backstage at The Mosque Theater, Richmond, Virginia, 1956 by - Alfred Wertheimer. In March 1956, 26-year-old freelance photographer Alfred Wertheimer got lucky. RCA Victor Records hired Wertheimer, the son of immigrant Jews who’d fled Nazi Germany for New York in 1933, to photograph Elvis Presley. The label needed publicity photos of the 21-year-old singer with one hit record to his name (Heartbreak Hotel) and who was back then far from a household. Elvis was booked to appear on the Dorsey Brothers’ Stage Show on CBS at New York City’s Studio 50 (later renamed the Ed Sullivan Theater). “I had never heard the name Elvis Presley in my life, at that time,” said Wertheimer in 2011. “He was basically a well-known regional singer in the South and now he was breaking in on the national scene.” More: https://flashbak.com/alfred-wertheimer-elvis-presley-1956-434560/ #elvis #elvispresley #kiss #kissing #1950s #music #photo #photos #photographer #photography #richmond #virginia #usa #alfredwertheimer #backstage https://www.instagram.com/p/CHsPzQcgLOq/?igshid=1l6ouarsgcd7s

Elvis Who? “Elvis who?” was photographer Alfred Wertheimer’s response when in early 1956 an ‘RCA Victor’ publicist asked him to photograph an up-and-coming crooner from Memphis. Little did Wertheimer know that this would be the job of his life: just 21 years old, Elvis Presley was about to become a legend. Trailing Presley like a shadow, Wertheimer took nearly 3,000 photographs that year creating a penetrating portrait of a man poised on the brink of superstardom. Extraordinary in its intimacy and unparalleled in its scope, Wertheimer's “Elvis” project immortalised a young man in the very process of making history. Now available as a ‘Taschen’ standard edition (the original a lavish 400-page collector’s tome from ‘Taschen’ with only 1,706 numbered copies each signed by Wertheimer himself) 'Elvis and the Birth of Rock and Roll’ collects Wertheimer s most remarkable Elvis shots from that magical year, along with a selection of his historic 1958 pictures of the star being shipped off to an army base in Germany. Each chapter is illustrated with an original poster created for this book by ‘Hatch Show Print’ one of the oldest letterpress print shops in America, which created many early Elvis posters in the 1950s. ‘Hatch’ created many of Elvis’s own early posters. ‘Alfred Wertheimer: Elvis and the Birth of Rock and Roll’, Photography by Alfred Wertheimer, Published by ‘Taschen’. #neonurchin #neonurchinblog #dedicatedtothethingswelove #suzyurchin #ollyurchin #art #music #photography #fashion #film #words #pictures #neon #urchin #rcavictor #radiocorporatoinofamerica #hatchshowpress #taschen #king #singer #iconic #rocknroll #elvispresley #alfredwertheimer https://www.instagram.com/p/CGRyuMIF8U2/?igshid=ltm439a6zuu6

Elvis Who? In 1956, young German émigré photographer Alfred Wertheimer was assigned the job of a lifetime: to photograph Elvis Presley over the course of a year during the buildup to his anticipated explosion of fame. Commissioned by a ‘Radio Corporation of America' publicist, Wertheimer’s photographs have become almost as legendary as the “King” himself. The images capture the youthful charm of Presley, as he waited for stardom: on stage, behind the scenes, on the road and even at his home in Memphis. ‘Taschen’ books have collated the very best of over 3,000 photo’s by Wertheimer compiling them into XL and XXL book editions, complete with posters by ‘Hatch Show Print’ one of the oldest letterpress print shops in America who regularly produced posters for Presley’s concerts. Wertheimer’s pictures appear in both fresh 50’s colour and stunning black and white photography. They show Presley the performer, the poser and the seducer, as well as raw and intimate moments of the musician caught unawares, in transit or lost in thought. The portraits include rare historic pictures of the rhythm and blues man - Presley traveling to an army base in Germany - as well as iconic images like ‘Kiss,’ a snap of Elvis embracing a young fan, Barbara Gray. Posited as the first Rock’n’Roll photographer, Wertheimer’s images are without precedent in the history of popular music. Wertheimer’s early photojournalism sparked a career as a cinematographer and cameraman but he would return to his photographs of the country music star, producing gallery exhibitions and book publications of his vintage images. Part of the appeal of Wertheimer’s photos is how they capture the essence of the Elvis that the world would come to know, while also foreshadowing the toll that fame would take. ‘Alfred Wertheimer: Elvis and the Birth of Rock and Roll’, Photography by Alfred Wertheimer, Published by ‘Taschen’. #neonurchin #neonurchinblog #dedicatedtothethingswelove #suzyurchin #ollyurchin #art #music #photography #fashion #film #words #pictures #neon #urchin #rcavictor #radiocorporatoinofamerica #hatchshowpress #taschen #king #singer #iconic #rocknroll #elvispresley #alfredwertheimer https://www.instagram.com/p/CGRyn8OlPQC/?igshid=1c415vjk2tqb1
