Description

Founded by William Sublette and Robert Campbell, Fort Laramie lay at the crossroads of an old north-south Indian trail and what became known as the Oregon Trail. Called Fort Laramie because of the nearby Laramie Mountains and the Laramie Fork of the North Platte River, the post was approximately 150 feet square, according to Miller, with bastions at the diagonal corners. Miller's paintings are the only known visual records of the fort, because the original fort was torn down in 1840 before any other artist had traveled the Oregon Trail; it was replaced with another structure, located perhaps on the same site in 1841. -Extracted from "The West of Alfred Jacob Miller" (1837).

In July 1858 William T. Walters commissioned 200 watercolors at twelve dollars apiece from Baltimore born artist Alfred Jacob Miller. These paintings were each accompanied by a descriptive text, and were delivered in installments over the next twenty-one months and ultimately were bound in three albums. Transcriptions of field-sketches drawn during the 1837 expedition that Miller had undertaken to the annual fur-traders' rendezvous in the Green River Valley (in what is now western Wyoming), these watercolors are a unique record of the closing years of the western fur trade.

The following info is from Tamsin Pickeral’s book 'The Horse: 3000 Years of the Horse in Art’, p. 243.

Miller accompanied the Scottish soldier Sir William Drummond Stewart on his expedition across the American West in 1837. The followed the route that was later known as the Oregon Trail through what is now Nebraska and along the Green River in Wyoming. During the trip Miller sketched and painted the unfolding culture before him, such as fur trappers and Native Americans, especially the Shoshone, known to many white settlers as the Snake Indians.

"TWO YEARS IN PENITENTIARY FOR HOTEL THIEF," Winnipeg Tribune. May 10, 1913. Page 1. ---- Many Theft Charges in City Police Court - Boy of 16 Charged With Petty Offence ---- No less than eleven charges of theft or of receiving stolen goods appeared on the docket at the city police court this morning, and in each case, with the exception of one, for some reason or other the trial of accused was held over until next week.

Hotel Thief Gets Two Years The exception was Dmytro Kowalczuk, who was yesterday convicted of robbing a fellow guest at the hotel which he was stopping. His honor in sending Mowalczuk to the penitentiary for two years, said the young man's record was far from good. Evidence was also forthcoming to the effect that the accused had been making a business of this particularly mean kind of theft.

Alleged Robbed Employer Jacob E. Miller was arrested геcently by a city constable on a charge of being drunk and disorderly on the street. When in the cells it was dis- covered that he was wanted by his employer to face a charge of theft. It is alleged that Miller, who was employed by the Co-Operative Tailoring Co., collected some monies belonging to the firm and instead of turning them in went on a drunk. He will come up on Tuesday.

Conrad Simmons was remanded until Monday for sentence after pleading guilty to the theft of a military tunic and a suit of clothes, valued at $65. The clothes were owned by Daniel D. Little

A young boy, who was not quite sure of his age, but thought he was sixteen, and who said his name was Mike Marciniuk, residing at 352 Alfred avenue, is charged with stealing a purse from the box office of the Royal theatre. Asked if his parents knew of his arrest the boy replied that he did not know. He was геmanded until his father can be communicated with.

Arrested for Theft a Year Ago After having been on the lookout for Frank R. Whitman for for nearly a year, Bicycle Detective Grimsdick has at last traced the young man and has arrested him on a charge of stealing an Empire bicycle. The theft, it is said, took place on July 31, 1912.

The young bank clerk who is in trouble for making out a bogus cheque for $4 was again remanded at his own request.

Alleged Theft From Person Harry Cohen, a respectable looking young man was arraigned on the serious charge of having stolen $32 from a young man named Claus Meland, with whom the accused was seen in a downtown hotel yesterday. William Robb, a middle aged man, is charged accordingly. The two were remanded until Wednesday. Bail was allowed.

[Kowalczuk was 19, born in Gortlow, Austrian Galicia, and a naturalized Canadian. He had no previous record and was a general labourer. At Manitoba Penitentiary, he was convict #1825, uniform number #63, and worked in the quarry. He was released February 1915.]

Discovering Beauty Beyond the Canvas: A Journey Through the James Museum of Western Art

A place where art becomes alive. And stepping into a museum becomes stepping into a world of creativity filled with vibrant colors, untamed landscapes, and captivating stories of the American West. The James Museum of Western and Wildlife Art is located in St. Petersburg, Florida and is a must visit for anyone interested in western art. Almost 3,000 works of art, including paintings, sculptures, and relics from the American Indian, are on display in the museum.

The James Museum differs from other art museums in a number of ways, including the structure of the facility. The unique building's construction was inspired by the Native American cliff homes seen in the Southwest. The four-story structure features an exhibition area larger than 30,000 square feet. The building is an open concept that I feel allows the artwork to be appreciated on a better level.

Several of the most well-known American West artists, such as Charles M. Russell, Frederic Remington, and Alfred Jacob Miller, have pieces in the museum's collection. One of the artists in the museum is Grant Hacking. In this museum is a special painting: Thrill Seeker- Bobcat and Crows. This is one of my favorite paintings as it has an interesting backstory. They also have traditional western scenes and contemporary animal art are also represented in the artwork. Thematically organized museum exhibits let visitors explore various facets of western and wildlife art. "Tracks and Traditions," "Native Hands," and "Wilderness to Wagon Trails" are just a few of the galleries' various subthemes. Visitors have a deeper understanding of the art and the culture it reflects as a result of the stories that each exhibit conveys.

One of the exhibits I found the most fascinating was The Native American exhibit which is among the museum's centerpieces. The James family has accumulated a variety of Native American items, such as clothing, pottery, and weaponry, out of a strong respect for their way of life. With a mix between abstract and figurative art, there is a lot to be enjoyed and appreciated by everyone. The collection includes items from over 125 tribes, making it one of the most comprehensive collections of Native American art in the country.

An assemblage of wildlife art is also on display at the museum, including pieces by some of the most well-known wildlife artists of the 20th century, including Bob Kuhn, Carl Rungius, and Ken Carlson. Animals are shown in the artwork in a number of ways, from realistic to more abstract and stylized. The wildlife exhibits in the museum are evidence of the variety and beauty of the natural world.

One of the exhibits I find to be most interesting is “The Stories They Tell: Indigenous Art and The Photography of Edward S. Curtis”. This exhibit explores the relationship between art and cultural identity. The photos are very unique and stood out to me because of the colors. 

The James Museum is unique among other art museums because of its dedication to cultural preservation and education. A nice feature of the museum is that it provides a variation of educational events, including lectures, workshops, and guided tours to visitors of any age. They even have a gift store where you can buy books, jewelry, and other things that are associated with western and animal art.

The museum's commitment to education is evident in its interactive exhibits and is something I find to be very inspiring. The museum features a "hands-on" exhibit that allows visitors to try their hand at roping, spinning a lasso, and other western-themed activities. The museum also has a "virtual reality" exhibit that allows visitors to experience the American West in a completely new way.

One of my favorite qualities of the James Museum that makes it differ from other art museums is its emphasis on cultural preservation. Many Native American artifacts from the museum's collection are on display in a respectful and educational way. A fuller knowledge of the art and the culture it represents is given to visitors by the museum's other exhibitions that examine the history and culture of the American West.
