Svartalfheim was fucked after Queen Alflyse's murder, and it was fucked under Malekith's reign. It's fucked in the aftermath. The world of the dark elves has a millennia-long history of being fucked, in fact, by the endless wars, roving bandits. Change comes slowly--and sometimes violently--in a society where stabbings and insults are of ceremonial importance.

Strength is the ultimate rule of law in the land of the Wild Hunt, and Victor Creed fits in with the bloodier set just fine.

The arena is strewn with blood and guts, stinks of shit, and the human woman in front of him--Woolf--flares her nostrils.

"Send us Councilor Bloodtongue!"

"Hand it to the War Witch, dog-bait!"

Yeah, there's a whole mess of politics he's not clued in on, and for all that she's pushing 6'5" feet, the human woman wrapped in billowing silks and heavy jewelry is small among the elves. There's a hunched, blind elf woman at her side, eyeballs woven into her hair like ornaments. War Witch.

If the woman is small here, her voice is a bellow as she thrust's the winner's crown into the air with both hands, her eyes fixed on his face and burning with a cold hate. Whatever it is she screams, it's elvish, but he doesn't have to wait for a translation:

"To the victor," she rasps to him, the dull light of the Svartalfheim afternoon glinting on her catching on her stag horn circlet of authority. Then, she jams the crown of thorns and nightshade over his brow before reaching for the heavy sword resting on the War Witch's palms.

"To the victor," she--Woolf, the Wolf Bitch, confidant and officer of Councilor Bloodtongue, Protector of the Western Swamps--repeats.

The bare muscles of her arms bunch as she lifts the weapon. Her face is stony as she extends the blade for him to take, resting it on her own palms.

Something ripples beneath the skin of her face.

The pomp and circumatance is lost on him. Actually, a lot of this is lost on him, but he's been in a hundred other situations where he wasn't exactly sure what was happening but he knew his job and he knew his place. Knew he was smaller than anyone here, which was an adjustment he was still getting used to, and wondered briefly if this was how Logan felt all the time. But he doesn't want to think about Logan. He doesn't want to think about home. So he stands and waits.

He listens to the roar of the crowd, and the corner of his mouth ticks up as he surveys the stands of the arena. It doesn't matter if they're booing him or cheering him, he's delighted to be there, covered in blood that wasn't his own, any wounds he might have sustained already patched together.

His name was derived from his mother's, Victoria, and it was one of the few things he's honored all this time. But hearing him be deemed the victor made him grin even wider. Victor, derived from victorious, which he most definitely was, as well. He ducks his head so she doesn't have to reach so high to place the crown, accepting the title with as much grace as Victor Creed had. Sorry, Ma.

And he gets a sword. Not that he'd do much with it, he was more of a hands on kind of guy. Or a gun, if he had to have a weapon. But he wasn't gonna say no to a trophy. He accepts it, the weight more than he expected, but he adjusts. His eyes look at the human girl, the only other one here who was most likely from Earth, too, like the familiarity was a comfort he didn't want to voice he needed. Like she would give him pointers because they were on the same biological wave length.

But he was used to doing things on his own, and if he did something wrong, and this all went south, so be it. He'd fight his way out or be dumped in a grave that he could dig himself out of. So he turns and raises the sword in his triumph. He's the victor.
