Ginger Baker par Alexis Maryon
Photo 1 : "World famous drummer and notorious hell raiser: difficult shoot with a difficult man. Shot in a hastily erected studio set up in his kitchen[Ginger is sitting on a Brabantia bin!].He was a chainsmoker so I went with the smoke."
Photo 2 (Ginger & Jakey) :"I suggested that Jakey the Dalmation be in the shot. "What the fuck do you want to do that for" was the reply. Ginger acquiesced, I got the shot and love it."

Sun Ra Space II, New York City, 1978. Photograph by Ming Smith
Sun Ra: Another Moment, c. Earth Year 2020
Sun Ra and his Arkestra are having another moment, a pleasant surprise during our pandemic times.
Opinions about Sun Ra generally fit into two categories. You either love him or... you're completely confused and perplexed. Personally, I've always been astounded by the breadth of his musical vision (from big band blues to the outer reaches of the avant-garde) and amused by the woo-woo nature of his executions. Wonderful melodies and whimsical (to me) lyrics like "If you find Earth boring, it's the same old same thing," or "Second Stop is Jupiter!" Or my favorite "Space is the Place."
Which brings us to four recent looks at the Sun Ra... um, universe. Tyler Wilcox takes a deep dive into Sun Ra on film in Pitchfork. From their tuxedos(!) in, The Cry of Jazz, a 1950s documentary, through band-shot footage galavanting through Italy and the Pyramids that was projected behind the band on live gigs, you get the whole gamut of musics and philosophies. And then... and then! the feature film Space is the Place. Don't be put off by the really weird soft core sex scenes. (No, like much else around Sun, I'm not joking.) Ming Smith is a much decorated photographer (she's the first Black woman photographer to have her work purchased by the Museum of Modern Art) who captured the unique Ra energy in 1978. A recent article in The New York Review of Books gives some great context, not only to Smith but to Sonny Sun Ra Blount.
Marshall Allen, 2020, Photograph by Alexis Maryon
And, in the last minute before we went to press, a couple bolts of wonder popped up in the Washington Post and The New York Times. The 96 year-old woodwind player Marshall Allen, is still "carrying the torch" of the Arkestra.
That torch now includes a brand new album, Swirling, now streaming and for sale. At least for me, it spurs my optimism about life and vision. See if you agree.
– Fred Seibert
Watch and Read in Pitchfork, The New York Review, Washington Post and The New York Times

Alexis Maryon - Port of Newhaven, VHF Ch. 12
Port of Newhaven, VHF Ch. 12 by Alexis Maryon 60 pages, 198 x 298mm b/w digital printing numbered edition of 120 £8 plus postage "There are certain places that become significant to us in our lives, places that we’re drawn to, return to and seem to act as a touchstone to ourselves. It’s often hard to convey these feelings to other people who may well see the place in perhaps a negative light. For me the Port of Newhaven on the South coast of England is one of these significant places, I absolutely love it: the lighthouse at the end of the harbour arm, the ferry (underused) going to and from Dieppe in Northern France, the industry, the fishing, the chalk and sandstone cliffs, the beach and always the sea." website / order
