#GoodNight This #ReneMagritte, “Le Seize Septembre” fr the Alsdorf estate topped #Christies #Impressionist & #ModernArt Evening auction tonight selling for $19.6m over a $7m low estimate. The work was bought privately just 4yrs ago. Though the Wall Street Journal's Kelly Crow claims, "The Alsdorfs bought this Rene Magritte four years ago after it went unsold at $6m low est." A price tripling fr 2011 doesn't sound too far off the trend of the overall market in that period. Factor in the #Magritte retrospective that appeared in the intervening period & the valuation begins to make more sense. René Magritte (1898-1967) “Le seize septembre”, 1957 oil on canvas 63 ¾ x 51 ½ in. (162 x 130.2 cm.) Provenance #AlexandreIolas, New York (acquired fr the artist, 1957). Jean & Dominique de Menil, Houston (acquired fr the above, by December 1960). Private collection, Brussels (acquired fr the above, 1978). Private collection, California. Private collection, United States (acquired fr the above, 1986). Acquired fr the above by James & Marilynn Alsdorf in 2015. The great tree in Le seize septembre—a monumental ash, perhaps, or a mighty oak—has its roots in a manifesto of sorts that René Magritte authored some three decades earlier, for the December 1929 issue of La révolution surréaliste. The 18 Les mots et les images (“Words & Images”) that he illustrated & captioned outline the basic, conceptual procedures he was employing in his pictures. Over the drawing of a low brick wall, he wrote: “An object hints at other objects behind it” Throughout his oeuvre, Magritte exploited the intriguing effect of enigma inherent in the act of concealment—that of simply placing one thing in front of another—as a virtually failsafe pictorial ploy, fostering an irresistible sense of mystery that provokes conjecture & expectation for the adult viewer no less than for a child at play.
