I don’t want to lose you again

Alex gets a phone call from the hospital saying that his uncle was in a bad accident. Except, Ian Rider died four years ago...

Alex was already running late to his university class when his cell phone started to ring.

He reached into his pocket intending to turn off the phone's ringer, assuming that the incoming call was from Jack, Sabina or Tom. They were the only people who kept in contact with him regularly.

It was an unknown number, with a 115 area code, Nottingham if Alex remembered correctly. It was likely a spam call; someone trying to sell him something or waste his time. Ian always said to never answer them, plus if it was really that important whoever was calling could just leave a message.

And- Alex stole a glance at the time, if he did not get out of here in the next minute he would miss his train.

There was just something odd nagging at him. Alex pulled the slightly burnt piece of toast out of his mouth and pressed down on the answer button.

“Hello, May I speak with Alex Rider?” The female voice on the other end of the line spoke. Whoever this unknown number was…well, they knew who he was.

“Who is asking?”

“I’m Sarah, a nurse at the Queen’s Medical Centre in Nottingham. I am calling for Alex Rider?

“What?” Alex responded rather confused. Why would a nurse from a hospital miles away call him on this dreary weekday morning. Heck, why at all? It’s not like he had an appointment up there. “Uh… This is him.”

Alex slid himself onto one of the high stools. He did not know anyone in Nottingham. Jack and Sab were both in America, Tom was or should be in his Uni classes. None of them were anywhere near Nottingham. His mind briefly flashed to Ben Daniels. It had been months, almost a year now, since he had spoken to Ben. Ben might have been from Birmingham or Manchester. But if it was Ben…. Alex would have expected Wolf or Crawley to pass the news on to him.

“Well Alex. I’m calling regarding your loved one, Ian Rider. And, I wanted to inform you that they have been admitted to our hospital.”

“What the fuc-“ Alex started to respond before catching himself, “Sorry. I just am really not expecting this. You said my uncle, Ian Rider, is in the hospital?”

“Yes. I know the news can come as a bit of a shock,” She continued, “He was involved in a serious accident when his motorbike collided with oncoming traffic. He listed your name and phone number to the medical personnel at the scene, before being med flown to Queen’s Medical center. He is currently in the Intensive Burn unit at the hospital. I am calling firstly to inform you of his condition but also because you are listed as Ian’s medical proxy, and legally are able to make decisions on his behalf for treatment.”

Alex ran a hand through his hair. It was unbelievable. There is no way Ian is still alive? Or was there? It was a closed casket at the funeral. Ian or even Alan Blunt could have faked his death. Four years…

It was a long time. And, if Ian was alive why didn’t he try to make contact with Alex before that? Why would he just abandon him? Especially if he knew Blunt and Jones would take advantage? Alex felt just a bit angry.

“Alright,” Alex repeated, turning his focus back to the phone call, “What happened? And what do I have to do?”

“Firstly, Ian has suffered from second and third degree burns on his right side. The third degree burns extend through the entire thickness of his skin, are more challenging to treat and may require skin grafts. He also sustained a head injury. We’ve conducted relevant diagnostic tests which showed swelling. Our main concern here is increased pressure on his brain from his skull. But, we need consent in order to do surgery.”

“My consent, right?” Alex asked

“Correct. We also want to make sure that you know the procedure, the risks and the benefits, along with answering any questions you might have.”

“That is the best thing to do, right? That’s what the doctors are recommending?”

“The sooner we reduce the swelling and pressure on the skull the better.”

“Alright, yeah do that. I’m definitely not going to make it to my class today…. You said Nottingham?”

“Yes, that is correct.” The nurse responded.

“Good. I’ll be on the next train up.” With that Alex ended the phone call, and pondered what had just happened. He felt nauseous, like the room was spinning way too fast around him.

On one hand, Ian could be dead. There was always a chance that there are two Ian Riders with the same birthdays in the UK- maybe the other Ian had a nephew named Alex. Alex was a common enough name. So was Rider. On the other hand, Ian could be very much alive. Which brought Alex full of emotions. If he was alive why did he wait four years to contact Alex, why was he in Nottingham, and why didn’t anyone tell him? A thought dawned on Alex. Maybe they did not even know Ian was still alive.

1. how many works do you have on AO3?

2. what's your total AO3 word count?

59,778 because I can only write/finish very very very short stories.

3. what fandoms do you write for?

Currently? Detective Conan/Magic Kaito, but I've written for boku no hero academia, young justice (cartoon), tsubasa: reservoir chronicle, pokemon (anime), mcu, kuroshitsuji, d.gray-man, criminal minds, and alex rider.

4. what are your top 5 fics by kudos?

pour me a glass of vermouth { shaken and very stirred }. a detective conan/magic kaito fic that i dreamt, woke up, and wrote at 3am. it's shinichi realising that kaito (his boyfriend) is family with an assassin that he's had to fight against.

insanity { when life weighs down too hard on your shoulders and you can't close your eyes in fear for the demons. } a criminal minds fic that i wrote initially for a friend on tumblr that's luke x spencer.

disguises ( you're not as hidden as you think ). a detective conan/magic kaito fic that i honestly want to delete because it's not good but i also don't believe in deleting fics, so...

five times robin's acting skills were amazing yet terrifying. a young justice (cartoon) story where... well, exactly what it says on the tin. it was written due to the young justice prompt meme challenges or whatever back in 2012.

fantasy ( we're apart despite longing. ) a detective conan/magic kaito fic and probably the one i'm most proud of of the top five. it was initially a one-shot that i wrote for a friend on tumblr, turned into a series, and i still need to write the third one and it's been 5 years, oops.

i didn't add hyperlinks because i don't think anyone that i follow/follows me is a detective conan fan looool

5. do you respond to comments?

yeah, usually. sometimes i don't like to because it inflates the comments number, but also, i don't get many, so i don't think that really matters.

6. what is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?

a detective conan/magic kaito drabble where kaito dies before the story even begins and conan receives his death letters. i honestly want to rewrite it though because i feel like i have a better understanding of both characters now.

7. what's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?

home ( is sometimes not where the heart is but where memories lie and cannot seem to die ), a tsubasa: reservoir chronicle fanfic where tsubasa grows some measure of acceptance of himself and embraces himself a little bit more.

8. do you get hate on fics?

no. that usually requires people to get hits, and i don't usually, lol.

9. do you write smut? If so, what kind?

i did and then deleted it all.

10. do you write crossovers?

yeah.

11. have you ever had a fic stolen?

not that i know of???

12. Have you ever had a fic translated?

nope.

13. Have you ever co-written a fic before?

yes! @greenfiredragonfly and i wrote grandpappy together back in 2013. it's a kuroshitsuji crack fic. (not that you know this blog of mine, heyyyyy).

14. What's your all-time favorite ship?

i can't choose, i have too many.

15. What's a WIP you want to finish but doubt you will?

hawk's eye, an alex rider and detective conan/magic kaito crossover that was based on a series of fanfics written by dblanc that they have graciously allowed me to write. i just suck at coming up with plots (i'm mainly a character-driven/analysis writer), so i'm just stuck on that.

16. What are your writing strengths?

personally, i'd say character-driven angst. i've been told that i'm quite good at writing different characters and given them their own cadence and tone that makes them sound like them despite the numerous fandoms i write across.

this is a review from a specific friend (who is really talking about my roleplaying that i do).

um. this is based entirely on my experience of writing with you but i think you're really good at setting up scenes. like laying the foundation for any interaction so the other person always has something to build on. i think your writing is also pretty evocative in the sense that if your muse is feeling something strongly, you convey it really well in a way that moves the reader. i think you interweave introspection in between dialogue and narration really well too, bc when you switch to a character's inner monologue it always blends smoothly and there's always a good flow to your writing.

18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic?

i do it when it makes sense to, and then i add translations for it. however, sometimes i don't want to do the research and i just go "i want some bread," he said in french.

19. First fandom you wrote for?

if you count my really really shitty fanfics when i couldn't spell when i was seven, harry potter. on ao3, it's kuroshitsuji.

20. Favourite fic you've written?

even though it's a wip that i probably will never finished, i really like hawk's eye. also, i'm proud of both of my tsubasa: reservoir chronicle fanfics.

I absolutely have to know about Centor Jalec (jalec!!) 👀 and the "fuck off I am not in the mood" one for AR if you want to

The title is misleading for the first one haha, but thanks for asking! So the idea is that Alec and Jace were cursed and turned into a centaur (Alec is the human part and Jace the horse part) and they run into Magnus who tries to break the curse.

Cuddling happens overnight as they wait for something to happen and release Jalec from the curse and the next day Magnus wakes up surrounded by both Jace and Alec who are *really* grateful.

It could be Malace, it could Jace and Alec BROTP, it could be anything, who knows! If I wrote it I'd know what it ends up being lmao

I, for one, am definitely under the curse of the infinite WIP folder.

The second one was an Alex Rider weekend prompt challenge that I grabbed but got stuck on *hides* Yassen tries to rescue Alex but like, looks like he's doing his job so Alex is like "fuck off, I'm not in the mood" but I couldn't find that sweet spot to write the interaction :(

Fun fact: the crack version of the prompt is “I see you met [insert Yassen’s dog’s name].” / “Fuck off…”

Rea ends win drought with Race 1 victory in wet-to-dry battle

Drying conditions prompted pit stops up and down the grid. Race 1 Highlights - WorldSBK P1 – Jonathan Rea (Kawasaki Racing Team WorldSBK) - Rea took his first race win since Estoril in May, ending his 24-race win drought. - He is the first rider with a winning career spanning more than 13 years. His first win was in Misano 2009. - He was one of the first lead riders to change from wet tyres to slicks on Lap 10 to win with a 6.247s ahead of Razgatlioglu. “There were a lot of things going on in that race and that’s what makes the victory a little bit more special because my team were involved in the pit stop. We could be strong in the wet conditions and also the dry, and I made that perfection decision to come in. it was even potentially a lap too late. I was thinking about coming in one lap earlier, but we made a deal with my team that I had to give them a signal on the pit straight. I thought I hadn’t given them the signal yet so came past so gave it one more lap and it was time. I quickly checked to see who was coming. I knew it was the perfect time. I saw Toprak was there so I thought the last ten laps would be with him. I exited the pit box and had a much better stop than Toprak and I could ride to my pit board. It’s nice, it’s really nice more than anything to win. It’s not something I’ve really been dwelling on since the beginning of the season because the season’s been so challenging. Alvaro and Toprak have been so good so there’s no point in me getting disappointed or feeling sorry for myself. We’re getting beaten now by guys who are riding very well and manufacturers that are pushing really hard. It’s motivating to keep working, to keep following them and keep challenging myself and my team. I think we’re doing a really good job. Hopefully we can roll this momentum on to tomorrow and finish the season really strongly.”

P2 - Toprak Razgatlioglu (Pata Yamaha with Brixx WorldSBK) - Razgatlioglu claimed second position in Race 1 to take his 81st podium. - He entered the pits to switch to slicks on Lap 10, as did Rea, but he wasn't able to catch the race winner in the final part of the race. "For me, this weekend didn't have a good start but anyway my team was working to have a better bike. Now I'm happy. We finished the race on the podium. It was a strange race for me. It was my first race like this. I felt too much spinning on the rear and after I was not pushing on the tyre. I saw that Jonny was also not pushing. Then I saw he entered to the box and I followed him directly. My team made a small mistake during the pit stop, they struggled to put the front tyre so we lost almost five seconds. But anyway, this is racing, this is motorsport. We tried our best. We are here, in second place. Now I'm looking forward to tomorrow.”

P3 – Alex Lowes (Kawasaki Racing Team WorldSBK) - Lowes completed the podium as he finished 15.435s behind race winner. He claimed his third podium of the season. - He was leading when the first riders started pitting but was the last from the leading group opting to pit-in as he switched tyres on Lap 12. - His podium finish means he is now only eight points behind Locatelli in fifth place in the Championship standings. “I didn’t expect it to dry as fast as it did. The race at the start, when I went off the start, it was a lot drier. The warm up lap was a lot drier than when we went to the grid. I need to be careful so I was trying to be smooth on the wet tyres, then I realised there was a dry line appearing so I tried to use the wet tyre a lot because I knew, at some point, we had to make a pit stop. I probably pitted one or two laps too late but when I got out on the dry tyres, I felt good straight away. In general, I’m happy. I think I have a good chance tomorrow whatever the conditions are. Really happy for the team and Jonathan getting back on the top step of the podium, me back on the podium.”

P4 – Andrea Locatelli (Pata Yamaha with Brixx WorldSBK) - Locatelli finished in fourth place 2.907s behind Lowes and around a second ahead of Bautista as he passed him in the closing stages of the race. - He remains fifth in the Championship standings with 258 points. "Today was a fun race for the fans and for us because to stop to have a flag-to-flag was interesting. In the end we got fourth position so I think we can be happy. It's a good result. I was fighting with Alex until the end and maybe finish in third position. My team did a really good job for the flag-to-flag, so I want to thank them. I'm really happy about today and about this race. We'll try again tomorrow, and we'll try to improve to try to stay closer to the front because we want to try to get a podium. This is the target, but we will see tomorrow what we can do." P5 – Alvaro Bautista (Aruba.it Racing – Ducati) - Bautista took fifth place as he crossed the finish line 19.369s behind Rea. - He decided to switch to slick tyres on Lap 11, one lap later than Rea and Razgatlioglu. "It's been a new experience for everybody, for me and also for the team, having a flag-to-flag race. In the beginning, it was strange in wet conditions because I had a worse feeling than this morning during the practice. I struggled a lot to have some temperature on the tyre and I was suffering a little bit even if I was in the front group. Then I saw that the track was drying step by step. But I wanted to be sure that we'll have a clean line in the dry to make the switch. I switched the tyres. With the setup I had for the wet conditions, it wasn't working so well for the dry tyres. I didn't have too much confidence. On the front I couldn't brake so hard because the bike started to move and jump a lot but also on with the rear tyre, it was like riding on ice. I needed five or six laps to start to feel some grip on the rear. I think this is a big disadvantage to be light because I cannot put weight on the lap in these kinds of conditions. We depend too much on the setup of the bike. If the setup is nice, I can push like I did in the Superpole where I did a really good lap time on the SC0 tyre. But when the race setting is not the right setting for me it's difficult because the bike is more difficult to go into the corners and I cannot move myself to put some weight at the front or the rear. I am more limited than other riders. Anyway, I'm happy. It has been a new experience. We did a really challenging race. For sure we have some data for the future in case this happen again." P6 – Garrett Gerloff (GRT Yamaha WorldSBK Team) - Gerloff was sixth around 36s behind the race winner. He pitted on the same lap as Bautista. "Complicated is the right word to describe this race. It was raining really hard after the Superpole session. I honestly didn't think that it was going to be a dry race at all. But then, we were sitting on the grid, the track was still soaking wet, but the sun came out and the wind was hard. The wind was up there pretty hard. And I was thinking 'alright this is going to dry' and it did pretty quickly. In the race, I made a decent start and it didn't feel too bad in the rain but honestly, I didn't feel too fantastic either and I lost some ground. But staying around sixth, seventh place and then when the track started to dry, I was feeling pretty good, expect that I wasn't really sure about when I should come in, because there were still a couple of places on the track that were pretty wet. I probably waited a lap longer than I should have. I saw Locatelli in front of me, he was with Bautista maybe, I saw him going into the pit and I was thinking like 'do I do it or not' but on the grid, I told my guys that I was going give them a signal before I come in so, I never gave them the signal so I didn't want to catch them out. Anyway, they would have been ready, but I decided to do one more lap, giving them the signal so they were properly ready and in the end it was good." WorldSBK action resumes on Sunday from 10:35 (Local Time) with the Warm-Up, followed by Tissot Superpole Race at 13:00 and Race 2 at 16:00.

Otani Surgery Successful, Treatment Begins; NJPW Windy City Riot 4/16/2022: Surprise Return & Juice Robinson Farewell; NJPW, AJPW, Joshi Summit Shows for Korakuen Hall 60th Anniversary 4/15 + 4/16/2022; AJPW Champion Carnival, STARDOM Cinderella, DDT, Tokyo Joshi, Dragon Gate, NOAH Results

Shinjiro Otani had a surgery on Wednesday on his spine, for the cervical spinal injury he suffered last Sunday in the main event of ZERO1’s show at Tokyo Ryogoku Kokugikan. It was said the procedure “went as planned,” and Otani has now been moved to another hospital to begin the next phase of his treatment and hopeful recovery. Otani’s wife Eriko also released a statement (translated by POST Wrestling):

"I married a professional wrestler, Shinjiro Otani, so I was prepared to accept a situation like this, but when I think of Shinjiro’s disappointment, I cry. However, we will not look down, but forward, and with the help of pro wrestling, we will continue to support Mr. Shinjiro. We will do our best with your warm support. We hope that you will continue to watch over us warmly. Finally, I would like to ask for your continued support for Zero One and all the wrestlers that Mr. Shinjiro has been protecting."

New Japan Pro Wrestling

Last night in my neck of the woods (or really, 20 minutes south of my neck of the woods), New Japan of America ran Windy City Riot, a live PPV event in Japanese on NJPWWorld, and in English on FITE TV. Apparently the FITE TV feed has issues, and from comments seen on Twitter, this is not the first time this has been an issue with the English live feeds on FITE TV (I have never watched any so I don’t know for certain).

I was actually in attendance for this one, my first live wrestling event since AEW Revolution 2020. I missed the first couple of matches due to parking issues, and also the massive line of people that was still outside even after the show started. I ended up actually being sat with a whole bunch of Rocky Romero’s extended family members, including his mother, whom I talked to and is one of the sweetest people I’ve ever met on this planet.

The finish of the main was kinda screwy. A very bloody Mox hit two Death Riders on Ospreay, which lead to a 2.9 count but the bell was rung regardless. Mox then applied a bulldog choke on Ospreay to “fix” the finish, and then hit a Death Rider on the ref before getting a mic. Moxley then declared he actually had respect for Ospreay now for stepping up, and called out Hiroshi Tanahashi one last time, to meet him at Capitol Collision in Washington, DC, on 5/14/2022, or else.

Tomohiro Ishii beat Minoru Suzuki, which prompted a challenge from AEW’s Eddie Kingston, also at the DC show; Brody King challenged Suzuki for the same.

The big surprise opponent for Jay White was introduced via video of Jon Moxley, saying “Go get him, Shooter!” Which was amazing. Shota Umino wrestles his first NJPW match of any kind since his final match in the 12th Young Lions Cup on 9/22/2019, having been in RevPro ever since, including during the pandemic. He looked amazing, very much in a Hiroshi Tanahashi mold, despite the obvious Moxley connection. Hopefully he’ll be back in the NJPW very soon.

Whilst we got one return, we also got what was very definitely a farewell, as it’s become publicly stated that Juice Robinson is not renewing with NJPW once his contract runs out at the end of this month. Indeed, the interview where he said this has him saying he may not return to wrestling at all, as he “doesn’t have the urge to wrestle really anymore.” He is currently engaged to AEW’s Toni Storm, so he may be able to live vicariously on that Tony Khan money for a little while. In any event, he hugged it out with Finlay post-match, and gave a very extended goodbye, including to a cheering section that was very clearly for him with signs and everything. Whatever he ends up doing, hope he does well. A big part of that match saw both Juice v. Tito and Brody King v. Shane Haste in my area of the seating, so that was fun.

I was also very pleased to see Great O-Khan live, and he even gave a post-match promo as the Empire beat the Bullet Club. There were too many people in that match; Scott Norton is now apparently part of the Bullet Club, betraying TEAM2000 (With Cheeseburger) in the process. Also, Norton was good for a couple of bumps and a suplex or two, but that was about it. Nagata goaded Lawlor into making their match a title match, which Lawlor won.

There were no announcements or teases about the rumored AEW + NJPW joint promoted show in Chicago that has been the talk of Wrestling Twitter this weekend. It looks like anything to do with that will be coming up on AEW Dynamite this Wednesday, as Tony Khan may want to deliver this message on his own.

All in all, it was a pretty fun return to live wrestling, especially for a show I was initially iffy about for various reasons. It does not appear that there was an NJPW Strong episode last night either, so there’s one less thing I need to write up.

Korakuen Hall 60th Anniversary

This weekend saw two shows commemorating the 60th Anniversary, having first opened on 4/16/1962. In addition to its status as the place to go for pro wrestling (indeed, for some promotions Korakuen Hall is the biggest show they run), there were boxing matches held here during the 1964 Tokyo Olympics. I don’t exactly know why they chose not to do the same in the 202(1) Olympiad, but here we are.

Two shows were run here. On Friday, a joshi summit card, with wrestlers from all sorts of companies taking part in the event, while Saturday had a joint AJPW/NJPW 50th Anniversary show. The shows were shown on SKYPerfect TV, so I am assuming they will be available at some point, on NJPWWorld if nothing else for the Saturday event. Attendances for these shows were listed at 1251 and 1588 – if that is the case, that is the highest Korakuen Hall attendance for either NJPW or AJPW since before COVID-19. It makes me wonder if restrictions are looser now, or Korakuen Hall is simply not following them.

Gold Class dared anyone to challenge them for the Open The Triangle Gate titles to close the show, and nobody did. Shun Skywalker forced Jason Lee into a tag match with him, still calling him his “property.” This will all, hopefully, be resolved at the 4/25/2022 Korakuen Hall show. Shun also made a challenge for the Open The Twin Gate titles for Dead Or Alive 2022, however GM Ryo Saito shot it down, saying Dragon Dia already has a match booked, against Shun’s own stablemate at that. Seems like a very wrestling thing to make someone with two titles defend both on a show, but what do I know.

The tour continues with a house show tomorrow, before a break, then resumes Thursday with a streamed show from Kyoto KBS Hall.

A Jumbo Tsuruta Memorial Show will be taking place on 5/31/2022 at Tokyo Korakuen Hall. So far only one match has been signed, Yuji Nagata & Suwama v. Taichi & TAKA Michinoku, but Shingo Takagi, Jun Akiyama, Tatsumi Fujinami, Great Kojika, and others will be taking part. Guests will include Stan Hansen, Kenta Kobashi, Toshiaki Kawada & Akira Taue.

Another memorial show at Korakuen Hall, for Hana Kimura on 5/23/2022, has their main booked, with STARDOM’s Syuri v. DDT’s Asuka. I am still rattled by her death.

Yuko Miyamoto remains BJW Deathmatch Heavyweight Champion, beating Hideyoshi Kamitani today in Sapporo for his fifth successful defense. Drew Parker challenged Miyamoto for Yokohama Budokan on 5/5/2022, whilst Kamitani accepted a challenge from the team of Takuya Nomura & Fuminori Abe for Kamitani/Daichi Hashimoto’s tag team titles.

What is it?

A prompt bingo open to all Alex Rider writers and creators. Please read the rules below before signing up via the Google form, which will be released on September 14th. If you have any questions that aren’t answered by the info in this post, please get in touch with us via email or send an ask!

This event runs from September 14th, 2024 until November 30th, 2024.

You can request a card at any time during that period.

Fic, art, moodboards, playlists, graphics, fanvids and gifsets are all accepted as long as they are posted to our collection on AO3 in accordance with AO3’s rules.

Each card is a 3x3 square (8 prompts plus a free space).

You can request a NSFW card which only includes smutty prompts, a SFW card without smut, or a MIXED card which includes both.

You can write one multi chapter fic with one prompt per chapter, and therefore multiple prompts across the whole story.

Please specify in each chapter/fic what prompt you are filling as this is what we will use to verify your card is accurate at the end of the challenge.

One prompt only per chapter or per one-shot!

You can request to replace squares on your card, and you can request a completely new card.

You can combine your AR Bingo fills with other events.

If you have completed one card, you can get another one.

Masterlist

This will serve as a personal tracker of all of the fics I have ever written, all of the books and series I have consumed etc. I wrote this out to help me organize my thoughts since I have time now to reflect on this closet hobby of mine. I also put it up just in case anyone has ever read my stuff and is curious about how these works are doing in my head space.

Some were written back when I was way younger so apologies for the quality.

ALEX RIDER

Memories don't keep people grounded in their present. They're the reason people think of what ifs and would haves, regrets and daydreams. Alex sees three dimensions of his reality and makes a decision. Set after Never Say Die.

It's April, the time of year when most students start salvaging their grades. Missions had taken their toll on Alex's grades and he needs to start salvaging soon or risk repeating the year. Nature wasn't on his side though and it turned out that his devil's luck had just run out.

Paradis High school starts a program incorporating adulting into their curriculum and Hange and Levi are paired together.

Hange already had the innate analysis skills and the quick wittedness to excel in the classroom. Chess should have come easy for her. As she processed her fifth loss to the man in front of her, she started to understand that there was more to the game than meets the eye.

A series of oneshots throughout the story focusing on Levi's chronic weakness and others taking care of him.

Big Hero Six

When mourning becomes too much for him, Hiro finds himself resorting to prayers and deals to bring back the brother he lost. The devil may have had pity on him but he never promised to let Hiro go unscathed.

Grieving may be a long and painful process but in time most people do recover. For Hiro Hamada though something probably went wrong along the way because from what Aunt Cass could see, he was moving on yet at the same time, he wasn't.

Fic you want to rewrite/expand on: ok, wow, i actually have a lot of these. the three i immediately think of though:

“The World Knows Our Name”; a 4.5k Teen Wolf future fic that i wrote before season six, it explores the McCall Pack dealing with the entire world finding out werewolves exist. it features pack dynamics, good alpha!Scott, the news, and politics. i got so many requests to turn it into a full-length fic. i was so touched and inspired at the time, but never actually did anything with it b/c i was already working on other things. but i’ve always wanted to go back and both expand the McCall Pack side of things, and explore a social media outsider POV on the events happening

“Our Kingdom Come,” a 1390 word AkaYona fic that was always meant to be a long fic. it’s an arranged marriage AU for YonaLili; i had the beginning ready, and really wanted to share it, so when one of the prompts for 2019′s AkaYona Ladies Week happened to fit... yeah. i worked it into a one-shot. i don’t know if i’ll ever expand it--i’ve never tried to do tackle a complete reworking of canon like that before--but boy do i want to

“Entwined”; speaking of complete reworkings of canon... “Entwined” is less than 300 words of another AkaYona AU. i posted the very beginning of it, which just seems like a “Soo-won actually kills Yona before her and Hak can escape the castle” story. but it... well. it’s a lot more complicated than that, in that Soo-won just implies he killed Yona. he’s actually holding her captive / keeping her “safe” (this is the guy who once promised to be Yona’s new mother, after all; he’s not going to just kill her b/c Kye-sook says so), but everyone else thinks she’s dead.

the storyline would eventually devolve into Hak leading a dark, vengeance-seeking Happy Hungry Bunch, while Yona fights to escape with the help of a few canon friends. probably endgame HakYona. the written up plot synopsis i have in my folder is longer than the itty bitty bit i’ve already posted, guys

Share a bit of a WIP or a story idea you’re planning on: uuuuuh ok, so most of my WIPs are either already being posted (in which case i don’t want to spoil them) or being kept Secret till posting. but there is one fic that i really want to get back to some time, even if i’m not sure when. right now it just consists of some ideas, so here’s a summary!

BNHA KiriBaku Fantasy AU.

Bakugou doesn’t know that every now and then, dragons will shed their old scales one at a time until they’ve all been replaced with new ones. It’s not something they really advertise—whether it be vanity, the instinct not to talk about momentary weaknesses, or something else entirely—and Kiri is no different when he starts to shed his scales for the first time since he met Bakugou.

Cue Bakugou being worried because DAMMIT SHITTY SCALES, he keeps finding them all over the place, and he doubts they just go back on!

Deliveroo Heads to I.P.O. as Challenges Pile Up LONDON — The initial public offering for Deliveroo, the Amazon-backed food delivery service, is set to be Britain’s biggest this year, giving the company an initial market value of 7.6 billion pounds, or $10.4 billion. But the listing, whose announcement was quickly heralded as a post-Brexit victory for London’s financial sector, has since been rocked by accusations of poor pay for Deliveroo riders. Major investors, meanwhile, said they would sit out the offering. Trading is set to begin on Wednesday, with shares priced at £3.90 a share, the bottom of the target range that originally was as high as £4.60. Earlier this week the company said that it wanted to price the shares “responsibly” and that it had received “very significant demand” from investors. Deliveroo, which is based in London and was founded in 2013, is now in 12 countries and has over 100,000 riders, recognizable on the streets by their teal jackets and food bags. Last year, Amazon became its biggest shareholder with a 16 percent stake, which will drop to 11.5 percent after the I.P.O. The Deliveroo listing is the latest test for gig economy companies, whose business model is increasingly under threat in Europe as legal challenges mount. Two weeks ago, Uber reclassified more than 70,000 drivers in Britain as workers who will receive a minimum wage, vacation pay and access to a pension plan, after a Supreme Court ruling. Analysts said the move could set a precedent for other companies and increase costs. In mainland Europe, where Deliveroo also operates, the European Commission is reviewing the legal status of gig economy workers. Demand for Deliveroo’s services could soon diminish, as well, as Britain begins to ease pandemic restrictions, including a reopening of restaurants in less than a month. Last year, Deliveroo said, it lost £226.4 million even as its revenue jumped more than 50 percent to nearly £1.2 billion. The valuation is “very lofty for a company that hasn’t made a profit,” said Susannah Streeter, an analyst at Hargreaves Lansdown. In addition to its financial losses, stiff competition from other food delivery companies and a potential drop in demand as lockdowns end, “you’ve got this issue that is not going away about the working conditions of its riders,” Ms. Streeter said. Last week, a joint investigation by the Independent Workers’ Union of Great Britain and the Bureau of Investigative Journalism was published based on invoices of hundreds of Deliveroo riders. It found that a third of the riders made less than £8.72 an hour, the national minimum wage for people over 25. Deliveroo dismissed the report, calling the union a “fringe organization” that didn’t represent a significant number of Deliveroo riders. The company said that riders were paid for each delivery and earn “£13 per hour on average at our busiest times.” In Britain, Deliveroo has 50,000 riders. “Our way of working is designed around what riders tell us matters to them most — flexibility,” Deliveroo said in response to the investigation. Alex Marshall, the president of the union, said that Deliveroo was using flexibility as a way to “strip workers of rights that you’d assume were in any kind of employment relationship.” “We love flexibility too,” Mr. Marshall said. “Flexible working is great and it’s something as a union we champion.” Mr. Marshall said the union was not asking Deliveroo to make its riders employees but to give them more rights, including holiday pay, access to pension plans, and ensure riders earn the national minimum wage after costs. Deliveroo will start trading shares on Wednesday in a period called conditional dealing, when the stock can change hands only among investors allocated shares in the initial offering. The stock is expected to be fully listed on the London Stock Exchange next Wednesday and can be traded without restrictions from then. The independent labor union said it was working with Deliveroo riders to plan strikes across Britain on April 7. Deliveroo pointed to recent public offerings to explain why its pricing was at the lower end of the target range. For example, Trustpilot, an online reviews platform, went public a week ago and its first few days of trading have been quite volatile. But there are broader signs of waning investor appetite for food delivery companies. Shares in Just Eat Takeaway.com, the Dutch-British company, have dropped 20 percent this year as the vaccine rollout has gathered pace and economies look set to fully reopen later in the year. DoorDash, the American food delivery company, went public in December to much fanfare. Its share price jumped 86 percent on the first day of trading, closing at $189.51. On Monday, DoorDash stock closed at $129.98. Some of Britain’s largest asset managers, including Legal & General Investment Management, which manages more than £1.2 trillion in assets, have said they will sit out the I.P.O. amid concerns about shareholder voting rights and worker rights. Like many start-up companies, Deliveroo will have two classes of shares, which for as long as three years will give William Shu, a co-founder and the chief executive, 57 percent of the voting rights. The offering has prompted a debate over whether companies with dual-class shares should be allowed to join the “premium listings” section of the London Stock Exchange, which would permit them to be part of indexes like the FTSE 100, forcing many index funds to buy them. While the New York Stock Exchange and other major exchanges allow this kind of privilege to dual-class companies (consider Google or Facebook), the London exchange does not — although some would like it to. Legal & General said it was urging Britain’s financial regulator to preserve the rule keeping dual-class companies out of the premium listings. This would protect smaller investors “against potential poor management behavior, that could lead to value destruction and avoidable investor loss,” the asset manager said. This year has also brought “increasing signs of countries and governments reviewing the gig economy status.” But a recent review of Britain’s listings rules that has been embraced by the government recommended that companies with dual-class shares be allowed into the premium listings, with some restrictions. The review is part of a series of efforts by the Treasury to find ways to enhance London’s appeal as a global financial center, after Britain’s divorce from the European Union sent some trading activity to cities like New York and Amsterdam. One of the Treasury’s goals is to make the London stock market more appealing to tech companies after a dearth of major listings in recent years. After Deliveroo announced London as its choice for the I.P.O., the chancellor of the Exchequer, Rishi Sunak, said that it was a “fantastic” decision and that Deliveroo was a “true British tech success story.” “The U.K. is one of the best places in the world to start, grow and list a business — and we’re determined to build on this reputation now we’ve left the E.U.,” Mr. Sunak said.
