Sometimes I find myself thinking about Alex and Henry in a fight. About how they can hurt eachother because they are the only ones who know eachother down to the bone.

I think about Alex's abandonment issues and how he's scared that a fight will lead to Henry leaving him. I think about how sensitive Henry is and how if a fight ever ensued, Alex would be able to talk, shout, scream and let his fears out while all Henry can do is to stand there, feeling small, and cry because it doesn't matter how many years they've been together, it doesn't matter that he's going to therapy, he's still Henry.

Most of all, I think about them navigating hard times TOGETHER.

I think about Henry not leaving but staying in the house when everything in him screams to run away. I think about Alex holding Henry and letting him cry silently because he knows Henry can't voice his emotions yet.

I think about them only needing eachother in the hardest of times. Never failing one another. NEVER.

Alex/barry jones headcanons!!

•he likes to collect little car toy models and shows you every new one he has gotten

• he loves to just hold onto you and likes to be by your side every second that he can

•his favorite places to go to are toy stores but he mainly loves the aquarium. He loves to look into the big window that shows all of the fish.

•he draws you cute little pictures. He always gets happy when you say you like them

•he loves to cuddle. But he does sometimes have texture issues so he can sometimes not want to cuddle

• he likes to watch what you do. In the kitchen? He's sitting there watching you make food or clean the dishes. In the living room? He'll sit on the couch and watch what you do. He's just a little observer

•he likes to go to petting zoos but is too scared to actually pet the animals (except the stuff like bunnies)

•he loves cats and dogs. When he sees a cat on the street? Immediately goes to pet it. But sometimes comes back to you sad and sometimes crying because the cat either hissed, bit, or ran away from him

•he get a nervous to try new foods so you have to eat it first to see that it's ok

•he gets super excited and happy when you get him gifts. Even if it's just a little toy car or some crayons

•at the end of a long day he likes to just sit and cuddle with you. Nothing else but Hugging under the warmth of a blanket

•he likes to do things that you do and sometimes copies/mimics what you do

(i’m tipsy and am thinking abt wayward sisters so it’s headcanon time)

- patience goes shopping for produce specifically. she always knows what fruits are good on the inside. what watermelons are the sweetest. what oranges claire will like the best. she has the Intuition

- kaia has a locket with her mother and father in it. her father died from cancer when she was a child. her mother died later in her life. they were good parents.

- claire smokes hella weed (but when kaia is having a bad day she lays off fr bc kaia is a recovering drug addict and doesn’t need substances close by)

- alex gets along best with dean bc she’s an old soul and has the winchester’s taste in music

- claire and cas sometimes take walks together in national parks. donna tags along and meets up with her cop buddies who are friends with park rangers. they all have a good time

50 milo murphy's law facts

5 not so fun and 45 fun!

Not so fun to start!

The only Milo Murphy's Law official merchandise is a notebook released in Japan for the MML X PNF crossover.

Disney actually apologized to Dan (and I assume Swampy) for the treatment of Milo Murphy's Law. Dan has expressed frustration at the MMLs treatment before, citing the Hiatus between s1 and s2 and the fact it did not air on the main Disney Channel.

Doof appears in more episodes than Cavendish and Dakota in s2 (this is the real reason we needed a s3). Also, while PNF/Doof stuff was planned from the start, Disney did push for more PNF.

When season 2 was airing, new episodes would randomly be released in other countries.

Milo was cut from CATU due to a feeling from Disney that audiences would not recognize his cameo.

ok LAME ones out of the way

On the first drawing of Milo there are three names beside it: Milo, Mikey, and...Monty. As you probably know the Mikey one got pretty far and is the name used in the pitch bible (and was referenced with "I am Mikey!".) The reason Mikey was changed to Milo was not a creative choice, but because there was a popular YouTuber named "Mikey Murphy."

Speaking of, Milo was also just going to be another character apart of a different pitch, but Dan kept thinking he should go into his own show. He went to Swampy and asked him what he thought of Milo (at the time Mikey) and the idea of a show about Murphys Law. it took them about an hour to come up with the concept pitch.

You can find several of MML song dubbings on YouTube and other platforms. Most notably the Japanese version (マイロ・マーフィーの法則) highly worth checking out. Fun fact in a fun fact, Doof and Dakota also share the same voice actor in this dubbing.

In re-airings of some of the first MML episodes, second versions were made that included Cavendish and Dakota in the background.

Yes, Melissa was originally going to feel the lasting effects of the pistachion uprising by remaining looking like one instead of Bradley having his arm turned into a vine. This would have been a source of conflict for her in season 2, but in the end they felt it was too much of a change. As far as Bradley's plant arm it was originally only going to come out sometimes before it was changed to being a constant thing. He does have feeling in this arm.

The Island of Lost Dakota's was going to include a scene with merman Dakota's ("merkotas"). There was also going to be "mutation" Dakotas, such as ones with multiple heads.

There exists a live action version of the Milo Murphy's Law theme song. well, sorta, watch it

Before Milo came out Dwampy made the song "we're gonna do it again."

MML was originally set to debut in early 2017.

Weird Al did not originally come to mind for Milo. One of the idea voices they had was Noah Z Jones (Fish Hooks). They auditioned hundreds of people for Milo, but many had issues such as sounding too nervous in their lines. It wasn't until Alex Hirsch (Gravity Falls) posted a photo with Weird Al that Dwampy realized he'd be perfect for the role.

Sara is based on a friend of Dwampy.

In tune with the popular headcanon/fan theory, it's possible they did actually consider making Cavendish a descendant of Milo. When Cavendish was going to agree he also liked Milo, he was going to say he was his descendant. *this may have also just been a joke line

Milo and Cavendish are meant to mirror eachother in the fact Milo deals with Murphy's Law and Cavendish is the "author of his own misery" in regards to things going wrong.

Another thing they considered was the possibility of Dakota and Cavendish being in a romantic relationship, but they ultimately decided they wanted them to have them represent a strong male friendship.

The Milo Murphys Law crew did keep up a fanart and concept art wall. Here, here, and here are some photos.

There was a baby Cavenpus cut from final productions.

There are no official ages for Dakota and Cavendish. Dan has said he believes Cavendish to be older, while Joshua Pruett has said he believes Dakota to be the older one and by a bit of a margin.

Pistachios came to be a thing in the show because a son of some of Dan's neighbors had been allergic to specifically pistachios. They needed an idea for the larger plot and somehow those two came together. (Swampy also notes it's a funny word).

Several of the scripts for MML storyboarders included just the words, "and Murphy's Law happened."

Dan has made at least one Vinnie Dakota dedicated Tiktok similar to his Doof ones.

The Doof and Dakota lines were recorded together, back and forth.

Melissa was going to have a hamster nemesis named Ham. In the Pitch Bible the name wasn't included, but it's explained it was a pet class hamster that would always escape and end up on her things.

The secret handshake Milo and Zack do in scream-a-tourium was intended to be longer.

The studio executive for MML originally thought The Island of Lost Dakota's was a joke idea until he read the script.

There was a MML kids menu at Disneyland circa 2016.

Dakota and Cavendish were originally not in the shows ideas, nor was any B-plot, but being used to it in PNF the writers room felt they "needed something to cut away to"

Joshua Pruett pitched for the MML x PNF crossover for where when Milo opened his backpack to pull out the thing he needed to save the world it'd be...Phineas and Ferb.

Dakota is the reason parking tickets exist, as he can be a bit careless about leaving time vehicles all over the place. Dakota is proud of this.

Melissa's likeness and name is based on Dan's daughter Meli, as to sorta "balance out" Isabella also being based on his other daughter.

They considered a twist where Bob Block would be an alien wearing a face mask.

"Cavendish Farms" is an episode that never came to be pitched by Pruett where in order to track Cavendish Dakota would try to duplicate Cavendish, though none of them would quite be Cavendish. One of the Cavendishs would have a heart to heart with Dakota, while Doof would ultimately call out Dakota for what he's doing and tell Dakota "you already know what he would do." dwampy rejected this idea because this was a bad idea, to which pruett felt that is exactly why Dakota would have tried it. if renewed, pruett would have tried to convince them more on it.

Chop Away at My Heart was originally called "Jump Jump Jump" and was made for another project by one of Dan's friends. After Dan have asked to transform it into something else for Milo, Joshua Pruett suggested a "Lumberjack themed boyband" in the script.

Dakotas voice was inspired by Elvis Costello. It's also the harder voice for Dan in comparison to Doof.

Mark Hamill originally auditioned to play a teacher on the show, but Dwampy liked his audition so much they decided he'd better fit Mr. Block.

In the MML pitch bible it is stated, "Mikey has a destiny to fulfill, something vital to the future of the planet." The goal of Cavendish and Dakota would be to make sure he stays on the right path.

There IS a full version of We're Going to the Zoo, which was played by Dan in this interview at 3:00:30. Several MML songs have had full versions leaked, implying this is probably the case for some other songs too.

Like several other characters, Sara in the MML pitch bible was different from her show counterpart, being "a hipster like Thora Butch in Ghost World."

The song "A World Without Milo" is based on the song "Happy Together" by "The Turtles"

Almost every character, including creatures or minor one-offs had a name in the script. An example is "Pia," the name of the poodle Diogee falls in love with.

In regards to when Dakota talks about cutting through the Mesozoic in First Impressions and the fact it is illogical, Dan says this is likely just Dakota being Dakota (aka, it was a mistake), and not every such line should be taken serious.

In a deleted "Snow Way Out" line it was confirmed that the raccoon in Going the Extra Milo and Fungus Among Us is recurring raccoon.

Brick and Savannah were going to have a role in the crossover.

Story ideas from the MML pitch bible that never came to include a beach episode, a Friday the 13 episode, and an episode where Cavendish and Dakota try convincing Milo to take a self defense class leading to conflict with a hidden ninja gang.

For unspecified characters (probably multiple different sets) Pruett wrote in hugs that were cut by (mostly) Dan. In response, he says he "put 4 in so at least 1 stays."

S3 would have likely included: A third Block (yes, still voiced by Mark Hamill and a Block "family meeting"), Milo creating the universe, Dakota and Cavendish getting the promotion they wanted but being unsatisfied, Elliot cleverly being connected to the overarching plot, AU exploration (akin to pnf) including an episode where Dr Zone is real, and a conclusion to the Prof Time arc. The overarching plot would have been the "biggest yet."

Penny:

Costume: Dorothy from The Wizard of Oz

Penny is the type of person who gives out healthy Halloween candy; the only time that changes is if Vincent and Jas beg her enough.

Penny is a huge fan of horror!

She chaperons Jas and Vincent while they Trick or Treat.

Haley:

Costume: Elle Woods

For pretty much every single year since Haley turned 16, she's thrown massive Halloween parties that are actually pretty popular.

Her favorite Halloween candy is Skittles.

Emily always tries to coerce her to wear matching costumes, but Haley always refuses since she finds it "too corny." She'll never actually say it, but she really wants to wear matching costumes with Emily.

Maru:

Costume: Mary Poppins

Maru is never prepared for Halloween and always ends up getting her costume together last minute.

Maru's favorite holiday is Halloween.

When she and Sebastian were little, he would tell her scary stories that would end up in her not being able to sleep and him having to comfort her.

Emily:

Costume: Mary Sanderson from Hocus Pocus

Like Penny, she is also kind of a health nut when it comes to Halloween candy, but she is more lenient, giving out one healthy snack and one full-sized candy bar.

Emily and Sandy talked all night for about a month trying to come to an agreement on what kind of costumes to wear. It took the two forever before they finally agreed on doing the Sanderson sisters.

By far, she is the best Halloween decorated and will have her and Haley's house decked out each year.

Abigal:

Costume: Elphaba from Wicked

Halloween is by far Abigal's favorite holiday, it's in her favorite season and it matches her vibe completely, what more could you want?

She tried to genuinely make a Halloween costume from scratch once after learning how to from Emily and her fingers are still hurting from how many times she ended up poking herself with the needle.

She cringes so hard every year when she sees her parents matching costumes...

Leah:

Costume: Sally from The Nightmare Before Christmas

Leah had her costume planned since the previous Halloween and got Emily to help make it.

She makes all her Halloween decor from scratch; it usually ends up scarier than anything you can find in a store.

Her favorite Halloween movies are the super obscure ones that she's collected from various garage sales.

Alex:

Costume: Ken from Barbie

Alex doesn't hate Halloween, but he also isn't the biggest fan of it.

Haley picked out matching costumes for them but ended up bailing last minute so he just had to be Ken alone.

Despite not being the biggest Halloween fan, he is the master at trading his bad candy for good candy. No one knows how he does it, but he somehow practically scams everyone and gets a ton of candy at the end of the night. (Sam is so fed up with it and yet he gets tricked every single time.)

Elliott:

Costume: Vampire

Poor guy can't think of a creative Halloween costume to save his life... He also can't afford any new ones anyway-

Elliott is actually super vulnerable to jumpscares, like, full running to a different room action coming from him.

He got curious one year about the origins of Halloween and ended up going down a rabbit hole. He now knows way too many "fun facts" about the holiday.

Harvey:

Costume: Fred Jones from Scooby-Doo

Harvey is the type to give toothbrushes out for Halloween, I don't make the rules.

And yet, he has such a sweet tooth that he gets so embarrassed about it if anyone brings it up.

He practically never wears any spooky costumes since he is super bad with horror himself...

Sam:

Costume: Jake from Adventure Time

Pestered Sebastian for months to do Jake and Finn for Halloween and was literally over the moon when Sebastian finally caved. He also tried to get Abigal to be BMO or Marceline but she wouldn't budge.

He always ends up giving all his Halloween candy to Jas and Vincent for no reason other than he feels like it's the right thing to do.

Sam will try to do every single myth/challenge on the day of Halloween.

Sebastian:

Costume: Finn from Adventure Time

He doesn't even know how he got roped up by Sam to do a costume that wasn't anything remotely horror-related...

Sebastian is very desensitized to horror, rarely anything scares him which is basically an invitation for Abigal and Sam to try everything in their power to get a scare out of him.

Maru makes him watch horror movies with her, which he acts like he hates but actually doesn't mind.

Shane:

Costume: Joel from The Last Of Us (got the idea from Sam)

Shane likes to take Jas Trick or Treating for a little while before he lets Penny do it and it's honestly his favorite thing in the world.

Shane is the type of person to be all cynical about the holiday and say things like, "It's just a day where companies make you buy their terrible candy for too much money." And on some level, he does mean that, but he can't stop himself from staring at all the Halloween decorations around people's houses in wonder.

He, for god knows what reason, really enjoys pumpkin-flavored stuff, like, drinks, snacks, etc.

Sandy:

Costume: Winifred Sanderson from Hocus Pocus

She is such a sucker for any Halloween-themed music, she loves listening to it year-round.

Sandy is unbelievably good at spooky people, she just has this way of making everything seem super unsettling and it really freaks people out.

Her favorite candy is any type of gum, not only does she just find it delicious, but it also helps her concentrate when filling out paperwork and such.

(this is my second post! so if theres any errors just lemme know. the way reader is described as a female. uhm a few things before we start. the nickname “mami” and “mama” are used. for those who are still learning spanish. mami means mommy and mama means mom. but in hispanic culture calling someone “mami and mama” are also used as terms of endearment. im saying this bc i saw somewhere that those nicknames are not used and i was just there like “girl what🧍‍♀️”)

-ok, i see alex as a “yes ma’am” or “gentleman” type dude. so like if u were to ask him “hey can i please get me some water” he would say yes in a heart beat. or like if u were with ur friends and u ask for a pic, he would do it no complaining. stuff like that !!

-if you’re in like a bad mood. he would STILL be so respectful to u. but like obviously theres a point where he’s like “ok, i get ur mad but that hurt” but the way he would tell u is just so kindly. but if its like a small thing he would say stuff like some friends annoyed u “yes i know mami” and just agreeing with u.

-HE WOULD GET U THE PANDORA BRACELET🫶🏻 like omg he would get u it for u first anniversary and like its just so cute 😽. if u have any siblings, he would take them to get the bracelet and ask them the type of charms u like. but honestly he would know what u like better than ur sibiling 🤭.

-The type of music he plays WITH U specially would be 90s/2000s chicano music. you most likely showed him that type of music and now, he’s hooked. if u need some idea listen to the song “all my life” by MJ magic <3

every time I watch the scenes of SCORPIA training their operatives it's really driven home how much they don't want leaders they want soldiers who will blindly follow orders.

When Alex refuses to shoot the silhouette of a person, everyone tells him he has to get over it. but actual intelligence gathering organisations full of operatives who practice their tradecraft treat any individual as a potential asset.

It makes absolutely zero sense not to try to turn someone instead of just killing them out right.

I think that's why Julia was blindsided by John Rider. And also every single time someone fails in their mad plan to rule the world it's because of ego. Greif, Cray, Julia--even Kellner (Home Secretary), all of them fail because of hubris and ego. And the thing that I actually like about Yassen as an antihero is that you really see that he has zero ego about his work. He knows that he is good at his job and he takes pride in his skill but he feels no need to peacock at all. he has nothing to prove to anyone. he makes decisions and he doesn't second-guess them and that includes deciding to be an incredibly homicidal guardian angel for one Alex Rider for as long as the kid keeps popping up in the middle of SCORPIA missions.

just the look on his face when Damien Cray showed him the footage from the pre-launch and you can see the gears turning as he's trying to play it off his it's a kid don't worry about it no big deal and he's like you can see the little hamster on the wheel trying to figure out if the Department is actually investigating Cray or if Alex has just managed to once again blindly wander directly into an active operation and then he jumps through flaming hoops to make sure Cray doesn't kill the kid at the airfield.

I kind of wonder if Syl was written to be a foil for Yassen specifically. The Rider boys continue the proud tradition of corrupting the next generation of SCORPIA agents by showing them kindness and compassion and basic human decency.

Also the thing that I love the most about series 3 is seeing Kyra and Tom working together to save the day. It is possibly my favourite thing. Tom has gone from how dare you you have stolen my dream (top of the Feathered Serpent leaderboard) and are clearly trying to steal my best mate (not to mention shooting one-handed baskets over and over again in the school gymnasium) to really trusting her and liking her because they both know that the most important person in their life is Alex and that they will both do anything to keep Alex safe.

Kyra has finally internalised the idea that other people can be objectively good. that they can continue to choose to be good no matter how much it infuriates her because she simply cannot wrap her head it not because she's antisocial but because she has never been cherished and cared for this way before. When Tom is trying to explain to her that she and Alex have a thing for each other and she just looks at him like he's doing another stupid Star Wars quote and he just realises that she really doesn't know and instead of teasing her about it just drops it.

However long they've been traveling around the world (and I'm not entirely sure thousands of miles makes any kind of sense Europe's just not that big) they have at least spent their school holiday together without killing each other and that's pretty amazing when you think about it.

I also really hope that Jack and Mrs Jones get to know each other better not because I 'ship them although I am not going to lie I have my moments (I also have extensive headcanon about Ian and Mrs Jones that may or may not ever actually go anywhere.) but I really like the fact that Mrs Jones goes out of her way to go find Jack and be like hey this is a really great time to go on holiday I think you should visit your family as far away from the UK as humanly possible ok bye.

I think Mrs Jones and Jack understand each other and even like each other and are definitely bonded in their mutual desire for Alan Blunt to not be such a dick. and I love that Smithers is also on team our boss is a dick let's protect our teenagers.

Just woke up sweating from my nap because I was feeling weird about some portrayals of Pavitr and did the whole Alex The Lion Madagascar 2 Escape from Africa "De Ja Vu Like I've Been Here Before" scene realizing where I've seen this before and why I don't particularly like it

In my own words:

They're doing to Pavitr what they did to Kakyoin which is turning him into a yaoified feminized skinny bottom twink who's only there to make sassy remarks and be the manic pixie yaoi boy, they're gonna do what they did to Jotakak with Chaipunk because I mostly see this happening in Chaipunk fanart and fanfiction

It's the typical case of a character being hyper feminized by the fandom, like how it tends to be in a lot of yaoi series because someone always has to be "the girl" in the relationship because the "bottom" is always portrayed as small, skinny with hyper feminine features or traits and the "top" is always portrayed as some dark, hyper masculine, tall, looming figure

And it tends to bleed into most mlm ships even when the characters in the source material are completely portrayed as being opposite as this like say for instance idk another JoJo ship like Josuyasu where just because Josuke takes pride in his appearance like Pavitr, fans automatically label him the "feminine one" or the "girl" in the relationship and tend to draw him smaller and skinnier than he is and by default draw Okuyasu bigger and taller when Josuke is actually taller than Okuyasu by an inch and the two more or less have the same build but I know you've had to seen it somewhere before because it runs so deep when it comes to MLM ships that I've seen it happen in the fucking OSMOSIS JONES FANDOM (don't ask, you don't wanna know. Unless you do want to know, then I'll share with you the shitshow of what I saw)

And this isn't about the people who may have headcanons of Pavitr being transfemme, ya'll keep doing what you do.

This is about the people who will look at a mlm ship and force hyper feminine and hyper masculine traits onto both of those characters just because they need someone to be the "girl" in the relationship and they choose who's the "girl" based on traits they might consider feminine, example, Pavitr takes pride in his appearance, he's typically cheerful and happy go lucky, he's short (shorter than Hobie at least) and he's "sassy" (Y'know the whole chai tea rant which wasn't really him being "sassy" it was more so him ranting about western cultural appropriation and people using words they don't even understand incorrectly but I digress)

And of course Hobie is given the hyper masculine traits because he's a tall black man which is a whole other problem I'd have to make a whole different rant about of how whenever black men are in mixed race mlm ships they're always automatically made out to be the hyper masculine ones because black men have always had hyper masculinity pushed on them and they're never allowed to be the "soft" ones in the relationship, even if a black male character is canonly portrayed as being not being typically masculine the fandom will still write them or draw them as having some secret " aggressive dominant dark side"

In ChaiPunk's case ? It's literally just feminized asian person and masculainized black person with all the shit I said before about how fandoms always need to make someone the "girl" in the relationship and yeah

🫂 A friendship headcanon

Jones was one of the groomsmen at Alex and Cathy’s wedding. He was honoured to be a part of the couple’s special day and ensured he had extra tissues in his pockets for the groom and himself. The day couldn’t have been more perfect, and Jones was so proud as he watched Alex and Cathy say their vows and become husband and wife. And yes, the extra tissues came in handy during the ceremony!

💔 An angsty headcanon

Jones planned Nathan’s funeral. Nathan didn’t have any family in Grimsborough nor anyone close enough to plan it. Jones knew what his friend wanted to have for a funeral from a conversation the two had shared following Chief King’s death. As hard as it was to bury one of his best friends, Jones was the only one who knew what Nathan wanted, so he took charge and arranged the funeral following Nathan’s wishes. It was heartbreaking to see his friend in a casket and to give the eulogy at the funeral, but Jones knows that when Nathan was put into his final resting place, he was at peace.

🦾 A disability headcanon

After losing his eye, Jones had to learn how to live life with only half of his vision. At the recommendation of his physiotherapist, he joined a support group, and learning from others who live with vision impairment helped him adapt to his new vision. Jones has also amassed an extensive collection of eye patches and has one for every occasion. But he typically just wears a plain black eye patch since black goes with everything.

🖕 A headcanon relating to anger

Jones started taking online anger management classes to help control his outbursts. Chief King was nearly on his last nerve when dealing with him during “Into The Vipers’ Nest” and told him to do something about his attitude or suffer the consequences. Thankfully, the classes and relaxation exercises helped Jones control his anger. You still shouldn't piss him off, but at least now, when he gets angry, it's for good reason.

😬 A headcanon about the worst thing they’ve done

When Jones overdosed on sedatives, he talked to a dream version of Zoe while he was unconscious. Jones begged Zoe to take him with her, that he didn't want to live without her by his side. But Zoe told Jones it wasn’t his time to go and that he needed to keep living for his family, friends and most importantly, himself. Jones cried and said he didn’t know how to live without her. Zoe smiled at him and told him he would learn but needed to fight to wake up first. When Jones awoke and realized it had all been a dream, he wanted to die even more until he read Zoe’s letters and realized that no matter what, he still had her in his heart, and she would never truly be gone from his life.

🎭 A headcanon about what they lie about

While Jones can be a dramatic complainer, he often downplays when hurt or sick. He doesn't want to worry his friends and family, especially after almost dying when he got poisoned during the dog pageant. He remembers how worried everyone was (and for good reason) and hated causing them so much stress. So when he isn't feeling good or has earned himself a new injury, he’ll always insist he’s fine, and they don't need to worry about him even if he’s in a lot of pain.

Okay, so — many people from the Alex Rider fandom have seen Slow Horses, myself I have not, but I’m thinking about it. But hear me out

Rider Family Headcanons + Fan cast (in my opinion)

— Ian had been more lenient on Alex than John would’ve been, but he was never really strict with him. But when Alex was young he was strict about Bedtimes, Dinners and so on, giving his nephew want he needed (School supplies, jackets, etc')

— John never really was close with Ian, despite them being brothers they were opposite in childhood, Ian being more of the nerdy, literal version of John. John was more of the “Hey, let’s go skateboard and be reckless” type, never hanging out with girls besides his mates girlfriends.

— The way Alex remembers his father is through pictures, and polaroids Jack gave him or he found in Ian’s office. He had always wondered why he had been described as looking more like his uncle then his father till he saw pictures of the muscular, tall and broad shouldered man that was his father, his slightly long hair reminded him of his own but he looked more like “uncle Ian” than “John Rider”. 

— Alex and Ian, horrible cooks. Jack must show them the ropes of simple soup — and how to make steak, chicken and other British dishes.

— Little Alex used to tug on Jack and Ian, to show them his little drawings he made with the oil pastels at school or of the time when Ian had been working on something in his office, the door cracked open — Alex would kick it in softly to hang up yet another piece of art or work he did in lessons that day.

— Most songs that were muffled behind Ian’s closed door was classic or old rock, Jazz was the most common for Jack though; Alex had memorized the songs being played throughout the years, making a list of his favorites.

— John was one of many people who played Football, Ian being so involved with his books still came to each game; getting driven to the library by his brother was common, John was strict about seatbelts, firmly telling the younger one “Put your seatbelt on, even in short distance, you never know.” And that stuck with him ever since.

Okay so now that I've had some time to digest and think about Late Night with the Devil, some thoughts.

Sorry in advance, this got really, REALLY long as I rambled about all-male secret societies, who and what was possessing whom throughout this movie, literal and metaphorical hauntings, how fame and fortune tempt us all to give up our humanity, and uh. Family youtubers.

I really enjoyed the film, but I do have to wonder, to start with, if other people will get all the allusions...? I didn't think about it until later when I was reading confused posts by other viewers, but I guess the film does kind of predicate on a lot of somewhat arcane knowledge. Like you can understand what's going on without it, but I do think you get a lot more enjoyment out of it if you have a good working understanding of, like, the Satanic Panic of the 70s, the parapsychology/esper craze, James Randi's whole thing, Anton LaVey, Waco, late night hosts like Johnny Carson, and of course the Bohemian Grove.

The Bohemian Grove is kind of... like, obviously a lot of the people making up conspiracy theories about that recently are alt-right assholes (see: Alex Jones), but it is very much a real thing. It's kind of a modern Masonic situation, imo, where you get these big groups of rich, influential men together and they do silly, juvenile vaguely pagan frat boy shit. It's edgelord stuff. But because they are secretive and they are powerful, people come up with all of these conspiracy theories about them.

(I mean lbr that's kind of the history of the occult in general, isn't it? lmao. People ask me if I was afraid when I was studying secret societies and occultism and it's like -- no, these were by and large just rich assholes fighting over headcanons about rituals that they made up based off of deeply faulty scholarship. But I digress.)

The fact of the matter, though, is even if the actual rituals and stuff are kind of silly, the main focus is really rich, powerful men meeting up with other rich, powerful men and networking like crazy. It does keep the rich rich, the powerful powerful, and political resources focused on men. Like the Masons, women aren't allowed in the Bohemian Grove -- and women in politics have bitterly criticized the way that they're being excluded from this kind of networking.

(God, it's so fratty. It's so fucking fratty.)

So in that respect, it is kind of something to be feared.

And... I do think you see that aspect of it reflected in Late Night with the Devil. The consolidation of power, the networking with shitty people, and the way that women are "sacrificed."

[massive spoilers for the entire film to follow!]

I do think I want to see this movie again to firm up some of my ideas, because I suspect that there are a lot of details that I missed the first time I watched this. (And I really should have watched the open captioned version of this; I couldn't understand a lot of what the demon was saying, rip.) But here are some initial thoughts.

The heart of this, obviously, is the demonic presence at the Grove and the way that men go there to sell their soul for power. In a very literal sense, that's what's happening in this film and it's what happened to Jack Delroy. He made a deal with a demon for fame, and that demon ended up taking everything from him to achieve that.

But... metaphorically speaking, it seems clear that Jack Delroy was very willing to make human sacrifices in his day-to-day life. He may have literally (and I think accidentally) sacrificed his wife's life to a demon at the Grove, but he very consciously and willingly sacrificed her for fame when she was alive, too. I mean... imagine having a spouse who is actively dying of cancer and making her make an appearance on your show two weeks before she passes. For ratings. Imagine how much it must have physically taxed her. Imagine how difficult it must have been for them both emotionally. It even could have hastened her death. But he was still willing to do all that for views. He sacrificed his wife, his home life, and his overall privacy for views.

(Family youtubers, anyone? 🙃)

He's also willing to sacrifice his girlfriend, his crew, his audience, and a little girl for ratings. Gus, his voice of reason. He was willing to humiliate him onstage and wouldn't let him go home when he was scared. His audience, whose trauma he was entirely willing to capitalize on through Christou's act. His gf, who I'd argue was probably using Lilly as well, was totally thrown to the wolves when he realized it'd make good television.

Like -- yes, there were supernatural forces at play. Supernatural forces claimed these lives. But Jack sure as shit wasn't being very careful with them, and these supernatural sacrifices always, always mirrored his mundane ones.

(I mean... he performed a human sacrifice of a little girl on national television while in a hallucination about using the sacrificial dagger on his dying wife. It wasn't subtle. lmao)

Moreover, the producers of the show were also very willing to put people in harm's way and capitalize on tragedy for ratings. So... there's a really unsubtle message here about fame and capitalism and the way it tempts you to sacrifice your humanity to get ahead.

(MAYBE LIKE UNDERMINING YOUR ARTISTIC INTEGRITY BY USING AI INSTEAD OF HIRING ARTISTS, IDK)

I'd in fact argue that pretty much everyone who got on that stage that night sacrificed their humanity a bit for fame, with the possible exception of Gus. Gus was the voice of reason, but I mean... he was still there. Maybe a message about how once you get in, you can't get out. :(

But yeah, Jack's obvious, but also Christou, who was willing to use people's trauma for fame. June, who was willing to use a little girl's incredible trauma to advertise for her new book. Carmichael, who got off on humiliating people just to make himself seem smart.

Like... they all started with a kernel of something good (wanting to help the grieving, wanting to help traumatized children, wanting to stop charlatans) but in the end, show biz turned all those urges into the most amoral, selfish, and cruel versions of themselves.

And all of those people crumbled when they were confronted with something real.

(Side note, our theater was in hysterics when Carmichael tried to offer the demon the check. lmao)

Truthfully, it felt like all of them had made their own individual deals with the devil years ago. Halloween 1977 was just the devil finally coming to take his due.

That's the main message of the movie, I think, but there are still some smaller details I want to talk about.

The Grove itself was an obvious allusion to the Bohemian Grove, which is a secret society of powerful men who meet amongst the redwoods in Northern California. Their mascot has always been an owl, which is why you repeatedly see the owl motif throughout the movie. (Happy Owl-ween, the owl mask, etc.)

Abrasax makes sense as a demon to choose (the strong historical associations with magic and demonology, the reoccurrences in many world religions (and occult groups), the role in Gnosticism, etc.) but there seem to be vibes of Stolas, an owl deity who communicates arcane knowledge to humans in exchange for their souls, as well. I noticed a lot of little allusions to Abrasax throughout the film even before Lilly started manifesting, like the movie being shown after the show being about Abrasax.

Lilly... She was rescued from a cult that seems to be a hybrid of Anton LaVey's Church of Satan and the Branch Davidians who died during a siege by the US government in Waco, TX. (Like the cultists in the movie, their compound caught fire when they were being raided. IRL, it's unclear whether the fire was started as a suicide cult situation or if it was started by the actions of the government as they tried to flush people out.) In this cult, girls were sacrificed at age 13, and all who witnessed that sacrifice would fall under the control of Abrasax.

So... she was rescued at age 10. Three years have passed. So she is now 13, the age at which these girls were sacrificed. She was due, in other words. Who and what was possessing her... that's the question, I guess. Demons, historically speaking, were known to speak foreign languages, speak in the voice of other humans, have psychic knowledge their hosts shouldn't know, etc. So she did exhibit symptoms like that.

I think... there are a couple of options here. There's Abrasax specifically, there's June's theory that she was possessed by a minor demon, and there's Minnie. Or a combination of the three.

It's pretty clear that Minnie's presence is felt throughout the whole taping. You can see her reflection various times throughout the movie, she manifested through Christou, and obviously you see her in the tape playback.

(And when I say my theater YELLED. lmao)

The question is, though... Is it really Minnie? And if it is, what does she want? Has she been haunting Jack all along? Is she there because, as it's the first Halloween after her death, it's her last chance to deal with her unfinished business? Did the demon allow her to manifest? Or was the whole thing an illusion created by the demon all along?

(I'd like to note here that, historically speaking, there was a theory that ghosts aren't actually real. They're actually demons masquerading as the spirits of departed loved ones, and they want you to summon them and listen to them so they can tempt you away from God. You can read this in the writings of a lot of the ancient Christian theologians. Or you could have talked to my grandmother, who also told me this when I was a kid! :') But she's dead now so I guess you'd have to do a summoning and find out for yourself.)

All that said... I come down between two current theories. I'd have to watch it again to firm up my ideas.

The first theory is that she's been trapped on earth for the past year, but because it's Halloween, she can haunt them. They mention at the beginning of the film that Halloween is a recent spirit's last chance to take care of unfinished business. So this could have been the case with Minnie. That said... what exactly was her unfinished business? Was she trying to protect Jack and the others? Or hurt them? Was she angry, or was she just, as Christou said, sad? Was her "an unmarried man wearing a wedding ring" referring to the way that Jack was grieving her and still wearing his ring, or the way that he wasn't much of a husband to her when she was alive?

The second theory is that, when she was sacrificed to Abrasax, she became a part of that legion. She was, like Lilly and the other little girls, essentially raised to be sacrificed, and once she was, she joined everyone else who is under the control of the deity. It's still hard to sense whether she was trying to help or hurt throughout the broadcast, but it explains her presence (she came with Lilly, not Jack) and how she was used during Jack's hallucinations to ultimately get him to perform the sacrifice on Lilly, thus bringing all audience members (both in the studio and at home) under Abrasax's control.

Either way, Minnie, in this film, is literal ghost haunting the stage -- but also a metaphorical one. The ghost of all of Jack's past misdeeds and the humanity he's sacrificed to get ahead. She's guilt and she's shame and she's desperate grief, and I guess it's no wonder that the negativity surrounding her was enough to kill Christou when he touched it.

I do think it's fascinating that all of the women in this movie are, in a very real and physical sense, sacrificed for the aspirations of men. (The little girls are sacrificed, Minnie died of a mysterious cancer, June dies because Jack pushed for her to stay, etc.) But metaphorically speaking that seems to be the case as well. They're constantly expected to put their own comfort and safety aside for the men in their lives, and their own aspirations are consumed by the men's.

Like I said, it feels very telling that women aren't allowed at the Grove. Women are constantly being denied power in this movie (or are only allowed power when it's in service to a male costar/deity) and it's largely because they just don't have the connections that the men do. The deals were made while they weren't in the room, essentially.

I'm not sure if that was a conscious choice being made, but it does seem to dovetail nicely with the strong, strong sexism and male privilege present in real-life secret societies of powerful men that disallow women. Like June only getting to shill for her book because Jack let her, women are only allowed at the real-life Bohemian Grove in very limited areas -- and only as a male member's guest.

Um... back to Lilly, though. What the hell is possessing her? She speaks as Minnie a few times, but that could be because Minnie is a part of their legion or just because she's trying to freak out Jack. Demons are known to lie using the voices of loved ones. Minnie's presence could have been influencing her, but I definitely don't think that's all that was in there.

The question, really, seems to arise from what June said about Lilly changing like a week ago and how she started talking about Jack nonstop. At least one presence in Lilly seems to be the same deity that Jack spoke to in the Grove when he was making his deal with the devil (so to speak) because it mentioned that encounter. But is that the only one in there? Is it the same deity that's always been in there? Or did it come to her only a week ago as a way to get to Jack and complete their contract? ("It is done.")

Lilly refers to her demon as Mr. Wriggles (which feels like an Exorcist allusion) and it seems like she has a pretty good lid on it. And when that demon is brought out of her by June, it seems confused and frightened. But Lilly is pretty clearly possessed the entire rest of the broadcast, so really the two options are that she was faking the entire time just to fuck with them (entirely possible) or there were two different deities, perhaps the original (lesser) one put in her in the cult and Abrasax(?) newly arrived to claim Jack and his audience.

It's fascinating watching her, because you can see her slip in and out of a possessed state several times when people aren't paying attention to her (jerking, spacing out, etc.) but it's hard to tell whether that's different presences coming in and out of control, her "talking" to what's inside her, etc. Again, this is a thing I think would benefit from multiple viewings. I'm really not sure if the Grove creature is new to her body or if it's been there all along biding its time, and it's only changing its behavior now because it wanted to be on tv.

While her recently changed behavior seems to lean towards the former, I am sort of stuck on the detail that Jack said early on, that he read June's book and couldn't stop thinking about it. That could just be normal fascination (and he did end up having an affair with her) but it could also be demonic intervention. That would indicate that the demon was manipulating him into putting Lilly on TV long before a week ago.

What is not really up for debate is that the presence inside Lilly now is one that has connections to Jack through the Grove and promised him fame. Lilly (before she was visibly possessed) alludes to this promise by telling Jack that he'll be very famous after tonight. And once the ritual starts, she is seen taking electrical energy from the set and cameras. She is literally getting her power from the audience viewing the sacrifice. (It's very Ringu.) And after Jack stabs Lilly, the studio audience, audience at home, and presumably real-life audience watching this movie, are all put under Abrasax's control.

("Hail Abrasax" is seen multiple times throughout the film, which might also imply that the documentarians themselves are trying to spread this contagion after watching the video.)

Uh... a few more small things.

Carmichael Haig is obviously James Randi. Like Houdini before him, Randi was also a stage magician who dedicated his life to exposing "supernatural" charlatans. He did indeed offer a huge sum of money to whoever could prove him wrong. Carmichael even looked like James Randi. (Though I'd point out that "Haig" is the name of the man who constructed the owl statue at the real-life Bohemian Grove!) I suppose it makes sense that he'd be such an asshole in a world where demonic possession does actually exist.

The one thing I'd say is... it's hard to say whether this was a case of the filmmakers not thinking through implications or if this really was a nasty joke, but Randi was, IRL, gay. He came out late in life and got married to a man shortly before he died. So the implication that Carmichael, in the movie, wanted to join the Grove largely because he was perverted is... iffy. Carmichael was never stated to be gay in the movie (that I noticed) and it's hard to suss out whether the orgies he was talking about were relating to the all-male membership of the Grove (i.e. a gay orgy) or the women that these powerful men had hanging all over them (i.e. a... less gay orgy) and I do think which they were implying has major implications for what they were saying about a man who was, IRL, gay.

Like... if the implication was that he must've been willing to hurt people in order to have wild sex because he's gay, that's uh! Not great! But if the creators didn't realize that aspect of Randi's life (it was less publicized because, as I mentioned, it happened later in his life) then they might have just been pushing on that trope of powerful men using women.

Really, really hard to say.

Next, Christou. Christou... it's hard to say whether the man was psychic at all. It's clear that he was doing a lot of fake-ass cold reading beforehand (though I do want to go back through it and see if there really was any allusion to a Peter- character involving the skeleton) and was using interviews to find grieving audience members. (Two practices that James Randi talked about a lot IRL.) But he also did have a very real experience when he sensed Minnie and, while overwhelmed, didn't seem particularly shocked by it.

If I had to guess, I think that Christou does have some psychic powers (which is why I want to investigate the Peter thing) but can't control them well and is easily overwhelmed by real phenomena. He plays things up for the cameras (I noticed his accent slipped when he had his real experience, lmao) but I wouldn't be surprised if, like everyone else on stage, there's a kernel of something real in him.

Finally... that fucking skeleton! I want to do an entire watch through just to examine that guy. He was in the flashbacks about the Grove, so I think it's likely that he might've been a member of that. He also is the only one who refuses to take off his mask, which seems to relate to the dialogue at the beginning of the film about wearing a mask to protect yourself from spirits during Halloween. I think he's definitely in on what's going on, to some extent, but it's hard to figure out exactly in what capacity. Was it a Grove member, or maybe a cult member? A follower of Abraxas? Was it actually the personification of Death?

Hard! To! Say!

Like I said, I really do want to rewatch this movie to pay more attention to small details I might've missed in the theater. I'm also looking forward to seeing it with subtitles. It wasn't a perfect movie, but it was intriguing and original enough that I really enjoyed it and want to watch it again to puzzle through it. Really, the one big mark against it was the brief use of AI, which is just -- god, it's infuriating.

It's such a small part, so it would have been so easy to not do. (Apparently it wasn't even IN the first festival showing.) But it kind of pollutes the whole movie, especially when such a large message is not fucking over real people in the quest for success in the media landscape.

Plus, it just kind of looked like shit.

I know it's probably a lost cause, but I would be thrilled if they hired a real artist and redid those images for the Shudder release. It would be so easy to fix, and it would make the movie a lot better. Those commercial breaks were so funny and if they had better interstitials (that didn't make you feel icky just looking at them) then it would boost an already great film.

I just. I don't even know why they did it in the first place. I'm guessing, based on the fact that they weren't in the original screenings, that they were pressed for time to finish things...? But come on, surely you can find some artist who can do something quick for you. It wasn't even a moving image.

So uh... yeah, I guess that's where I'm at. It was an interesting (if slightly hokey) movie pulling together a lot of threads to make something cool and mysterious, I liked a lot of the acting (particularly Jack Delroy's) and set design, I wanna chat with people about it -- but I can't really in good conscience fully recommend it because of the AI thing. It's just such a disgrace to artistic integrity. Here's hoping they hire a real fucking artist.
