Finding Emo
Tammy La Gorce | Aug. 14, 2005 | nytimes.com
THERE is no shortage of cultural exports from New Jersey: the ethnic clichés of "The Sopranos," the tortured grotesques of the filmmaker Todd Solondz and those grand oldies acts Bruce Springsteen and Jon Bon Jovi.
Add to this list emo, or emotional punk or post-hardcore or pop-punk. That is, punk that wears its heart on its sleeve and tries a little tenderness to leaven its sonic attack. If it helps, imagine Ricky Nelson singing in the Sex Pistols.
Anybody old enough to have a full-time job can be forgiven for not noticing that New Jersey is home to break-out groups like Thursday, My Chemical Romance and Senses Fail, and that in the eyes of several national rock labels, the Garden State has become a hotbed for signing best-new-hope bands.
Turn on the Fuse network, the new generation's answer to the now-quaint MTV, and a single rotation of videos is apt to turn up a cluster of shaggy-haired New Jersey guys torturing guitars as they shriek about the bleakness of their callow lives. These bands share a sound (driving but desolate), an attitude (life's rough, man) and a history (gigs in basements, lodges and V.F.W. halls where they got their start).
Most of these bands haven't yet infiltrated the iPods of the masses, but they are sketching in the strong sense of New Jersey as a music scene the way Athens, Ga., was in the early 1980's and Seattle was in the late 1980's and early 90's. New Jersey and emo don't quite have that gravity yet, but more and more people are asking: "Where were you when Jimmy Eat World lit up the Wayne Firehouse in 2000?"
Richard Reines, who owns Drive-Thru Records, which is based in the San Fernando Valley in California, believes in the New Jersey scene; Drive-Thru's roster includes Hidden in Plain View from Stanhope and the Early November from Hammonton.
"We came back, because as label owners we couldn't be away from it," said Mr. Reines, who is from Fort Lee. He recently bought a house in Matawan and, for business reasons, now splits his time between the two states.
If you haven't heard of Senses Fail, a screamy Bergen County four-piece whose debut album, "Let It Enfold You" (Vagrant) made the top 40 last fall and has already sold more than 200,000 copies, you may have heard of My Chemical Romance, a punkier, goth-leaning band by way of Kearny and Belleville whose mainstream crossover came with last year's "Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge" album (Warner) and the hit single "I'm Not O.K.."
If you haven't heard of Armor for Sleep, a West Orange-Madison-Teaneck-Maplewood collective with a video from the album "What to Do When You Are Dead" (Equal Vision) rising on Fuse, you may be familiar with Thursday, the raging New Brunswick outfit that toured with the Cure last summer. The band's "War All the Time" (Island), released in 2003, has sold 332,000 copies, advancing the theory that it, along with a couple of other New Brunswick early achievers, set the stage for a scene that has grown so hot that some hipster purists argue that it has already burned itself out.
The Big Bang
Jimmy Eat World, the band responsible for what Gabe Saporta, who leads Midtown -- a West Orange-New Brunswick heavy guitar outfit -- calls "the Jersey scene's golden moment," is not from New Jersey at all, but Arizona.
Even so, for Mr. Saporta and his peers, when Jimmy Eat World played the Wayne Firehouse -- which is still a firehouse -- that meant validation for their musical scene: though the band could have played to sold-out arenas nationwide, Jimmy Eat World swerved its bus into Wayne for a spur-of-the-moment free concert based on the pull of kindred spirits.
"It was their way of acknowledging the kids here," said Alex Saavedra, owner of the Kearny-based independent Eyeball Records. "Nobody could see anything, and it probably wasn't easy for them to get their equipment in there, but they wanted to play to kids who were doing what they did, which was owning their own scene, doing it on their own terms."
Jimmy Eat World was among the most celebrated acts tagged with the now-unfashionable emo label early on, and its sound -- moody, melodic and marked by an obsession with doomed relationships -- started filtering through New Jersey high schools and sticking to more introspective teenagers in the late 1990's.
Around the same time -- April 17, 1997, to be exact -- Saves the Day, fronted by Chris Conley, assembled in Princeton and was also quickly classified as emo. Its music, which hundreds of "confused, unhappy kids," as Mr. Conley calls them, would pay $5 to listen to on weekend nights at places like the Manville Elks Lodge and the Princeton Arts Council, resonated with locals the way that Jimmy Eat World soon resonated with a country full of sullen teenagers.
For Saves the Day, which went on to sold-out shows across the country, a contract with DreamWorks and several respectable chart runs, the build was slower than Jimmy Eat World's. But it energized a scene that every player that has emerged with a record deal since recalls with emo-appropriate love and longing.
"It was really an incredible thing that for us started 10 years ago," said Mr. Conley, who is preparing for a fall tour with Saves the Day alongside Senses Fail. "Every weekend, we'd go to a show to see a local band. We'd go to a record store in New Brunswick and pick up a flier for a show at a V.F.W. or an Elks Lodge or in somebody's basement, and it would always be the same people. After a while we created a little community -- these were the type of kids who probably didn't have a million friends in high school -- and it was a safe haven for us. There was a real sense of belonging, and that was the seed of the scene that's today. Now I get asked about New Jersey a lot.
"We were so lucky that we had those places to play, that sort of community, and a lot of bands that are in the mainstream right now owe their momentum to that."
Thursday's lead singer, Geoff Rickly, never meant to manufacture a scene when his band came together in 1997. But a cluster of key players who at the time considered his basement New Jersey's answer to CBGB's maintain that he did, anyway.
As Mr. Rickly explained: "We just wanted to have a place for people in the area to come see music. It wasn't the most original idea, but I had a house in New Brunswick I was renting with a basement, and it just grew out of that."
Gerard Way of My Chemical Romance said that road-tripping to Mr. Rickly's basement "was a way to keep the focus on music, instead of going to bars where kids couldn't get in anyway and people were only interested in getting bombed."
Mr. Saavedra, of Eyeball Records, the first label to sign Thursday, Midtown, My Chemical Romance and other bands before they leaped into the mainstream, recalled a typical Friday night in Mr. Rickly's basement: "You could fit maybe 100 people in there, and then you'd have kids in the driveway, in the backyard, kids with their ears pressed against the windows trying to listen. It was the sweatiest, smelliest thing, but it was incredible."
Mr. Rickly added: "It was a little sanctuary of a place. So many kids would show up that we'd open the storm windows so they could hear. One time we flagged down an ice cream truck for 300 kids."
On the Brink of Nostalgia
Nowadays, people want to do more than flag an ice cream truck. They want to flag down fame.
Mr. Saavedra of Eyeball Records says he has been wading through calls from bands hoping to get in on what Mr. Way calls "the Jersey signing explosion."
"People are saying that if you break in Jersey, you break in the rest of the world," Mr. Saavedra said. "I've had bands call me from Tennessee, Colorado, asking me what part of Jersey they should move to."
Mr. Reines of Drive-Thru added: "It's not only the music, the fashion starts in New Jersey, too. Say every kid is wearing a track jacket, and other kids are wearing hoodies. In six months or a year, the rest of the country will get into it. That's what people think."
Other acts yoked to the New Jersey emo outbreak include Hidden in Plain View (Stanhope), which released its first full-length album, "Life in Dreaming," earlier this year; the Early November (Hammonton), which is releasing a triple-album this fall; the Milwaukees, a Jersey City band that will release its first full-length disc next year and is already gaining favor in Europe; and the Number 12 Looks Like You (Bergen County).
These bands' popularity has also spurred an infestation of promoters and representatives from national labels in the New Jersey suburbs. They now mingle freely among the high school upstarts originally responsible for booking the lodges, firehouses and community centers where bands played -- and, in some locations, continue to play.
Though most young bands would welcome the attention of a major CD label, the presence of the music business carries the whiff of a sellout for the original players. If anyone corrupted the underground greatness of the circuit, the band members say, corporate party-crashers would be to blame.
"It's the most unique scene in the world," Mr. Way said. "I look at it now in a very nostalgic way. I definitely miss it."
"It was my church, my way to connect," said Buddy Nielsen, leader of Senses Fail. "Everybody was there for the music, nobody was there just to buy merch. And after a show, you'd all go to a diner afterward. That was the New Jersey thing."
No Place Like Home
Among every erstwhile New Jersey hall player, and even among the label people, a sense that you can't go back again has taken hold.
"The success of these bands is really a tribute to the kids in the scene," said Rich Egan, owner of Los Angeles-based Vagrant Records. "They were fans first, and they've been so supportive of each other. Part of the reason that Jersey is producing bands is because they made a space for each other to get their sea legs. Places like the Wayne Firehouse were a way for them to get in front of a lot of other kids and play. Kids putting on hall shows is the very definition of D.I.Y. I don't think trying to turn it into the Hollywood Strip works."
Ace Enders, leader of the Early November, said: "It's a strong scene, and everybody loves it. But when every band's getting signed, something's bound to change."
Depending on who a confused, unhappy young listener or hopeful rock star asks, though, all may not be lost. "Everything happens in cycles," said Mr. Nielsen, whose hand is smothered by a cross-and-skull tattoo that reads "Jersey" beneath it. "This scene is strong enough that it will recycle itself and come again."
Mr. Conley of Saves the Day said: "There's a distinct change you can see. Whenever you catch a glimpse of success it starts to change the music. But out of the ashes of a smoldering heap of junk, people become creative again because they're so frustrated."
Mr. Saavedra, though no less hopeful, is not convinced that the junk-heap comparison holds currency yet. A 12-band show he helped stage at the Wayne Firehouse in June had him feeling as if he had entered a time machine.
"Every single band that came through here played the Wayne Firehouse," he said, "so it would be great if they started doing more shows there again."
If that doesn't happen, several members of New Jersey's own brotherhood of bands may one day resurrect the scene themselves.
At a recent Armor for Sleep show at Irving Plaza in Manhattan, the four members, who have a reputation among their fellow bands as likable kid brothers, took a break from setting up to talk about life in a touring van and home -- in their case, their parents' New Jersey homes.
"It's the perfect place to live," said the band's 21-year-old front man, Ben Jorgensen, to nods from his band mates. "It's not typically boring suburbia. Every town is busy. It's like a mini-New York, but it's really safe.
"I want to continue living there, probably forever," added Mr. Jorgensen, who is a native of West Orange. "It's great for raising a family."

Maniscalco, 23, is having an outstanding second season with the Nailers, as he is currently leading the team in scoring at nearly a point-per-game pace. Josh has eight goals, 17 assists, and 25 points in 26 games. In addition to his lead in assists and points, he is also in the top spot on the club in power-play points (13) and shots on goal (90). His eight goals and 25 points are both tied for the most among ECHL defensemen, and his 90 shots put him in sole possession of first among blueliners. This is the Perkiomenville, Pennsylvania native's fourth time being honored by the ECHL in his two seasons with Wheeling. Last season, he was named to the All-ECHL Second Team and the ECHL All-Rookie Team, and he was also the AMI Graphics Plus Performer of the Month in December of 2021. Josh played in his 100th professional game on Friday, in addition to his 90th as a Nailer. He has amassed 25 goals, 53 assists, and 78 points in a Wheeling uniform. “Art This Way feels like a world-class art gallery that is open 24 hours a day,” says Michael Galbraith, President & CEO of the Fort Wayne Downtown Improvement District, in regard to all of the public art available to enjoy throughout Downtown Fort Wayne.
Art This Way operates under the umbrella of the Fort Wayne Downtown Improvement District. Art This Way Manager Alexandra Hall has helped bring Art This Way to life through alley activations. Art This Way works to raise funds and act as the liaison between property owners and artists to bring large scale professional art installations to Fort Wayne.
Get to know the “Double Plus” in Downtown Fort Wayne. The Double Plus weaves between residential areas, local shops and restaurants, and is home to numerous pieces of art, light installations, and family-friendly areas to hang out. When viewed from above, the alleys align to make two “plus” signs within the busy downtown streets.
The Double Plus can be found in the alleyways between W. Berry Street, E. Wayne Street, and W. Washington Street (that run east and west) and S. Calhoun Street and S. Harrison Street (that run north and south).
The south area of the Double Plus is home to numerous works of art including pieces by Alex Mendez, Alexandra Hall, Diane Groenert, Terry Ratliff, and Theoplis Smith placed between 2016 and 2017. There are also Art This Way murals from 1010, Matthew Plett, Arlin Graff, and Bryan Ballinger as well as a Clean Drains Fort Wayne mural by Julie Wall.
In the north area of the Double Plus, there are Art This Way murals by Shawn Dunwoody, Tammy Davis, Tim Parsley, and JUURI. The north area is also home to the 77 Steps light sculpture, the Porch Off Calhoun, and a Bryan Ballinger mural on the side of the City Center Garage adjacent to the Porch Off Calhoun.
String lights as well as furniture pieces to relax or dine at can be found throughout both the north and south areas of the Double Plus during warmer months of the year. Whether you are taking family photos during the day, or exploring the lights in the evening after grabbing a slice of pizza from 816 Pint & Slice or Big Apple Pizza, the Double Plus is accessible, colorful, and open to the public every single day.
Alexandra Hall says, “The Double Plus is always evolving. If you visit Downtown Fort Wayne, you may find new murals being created throughout the summer. What started as an art project has grown into an all-inclusive downtown experience and public space that is welcome and safe for everyone.”

Activity Check
Two weeks have gone by, and the current activity period has ended! This post will be listing all of the characters who have and haven’t met their post requirements, as well as provide them with their pay and expenses for the last two weeks, so be sure to read this to collect/pay your bank, and to make sure whether or not your character is in danger of being dropped!
To pass, your character must have at least FOUR RP POSTS. Music, Money Posts, and Artwork don’t count for activity unless they have an RP component to them. If your character hasn’t met the post requirement, then they will fail. If they fail the subsequent check, then that character will be dropped from the Masterlist. Failed characters do not get the money bonuses from the Activity Check. Instead, they will only be awarded 500G and whatever expenses that applies to them (rent, commuter’s pass). Hopefully you’ll be able to keep up with your activity next go-round!
If you are a new arrival to the group (as in, you’ve joined during this activity period), then you will automatically pass. Additionally, if you are a new arrival and have made FOUR RP POSTS, then you will get full benefits of the check. If not, your character’s name will have a star next to it, and they will only get 1,000G for passing. This only applies to new arrivals that have been here for a majority of the activity period. If your character has joined in the week of the activity check, they will also be allowed full benefits. This is applicable for people with hiatuses, as well--- if you get off of hiatus and/or report back in within the week of the activity check, you will also be allowed a pass.
Here are the most recent community updates and announcements!
Please be sure to read the results below, and, if you’ve passed, apply these money changes to your bank account (via an activity marker post tagged as #pi:money and #pi:activity) according to which ones apply to your specific character.
The next Activity Check will be on Saturday, April 27th!

Day 1 …. I have accepted a challenge (from Edward Benjamin Blau II Esquire) to post seven albums that I love – one album per day. He’s changed the rules a bit, though… so here is how this will go:
These will be records that had an effect on me, not necessarily because I love them, but because they represent something in my life. So yes, posting albums WITH EXPLANATION as a way to connect with my Facebook friends. Your comments would be nice as well. Each day I will ask a friend to take up the challenge. This is number one. Let’s unleash the love and memories …
U2 was coming to Cleveland’s old Municipal Stadium October 6th, 1987 touring behind the record shown below. A great album that pushed the band into the next hemisphere of popularity and importance. We had just moved to Akron in July and there was no way I could spend hours standing in line at the Chapel Hill Sears Ticketmaster location. When I arrived about 30 minutes before they went on sale the line was 50 yds long in the parking lot. Wearing a shirt & tie, I made a sign out of cardboard that I needed two tickets and hoped someone buying 2 (limit 4 or 6) would help me out. Somehow I got someone’s attention near the front of the line and I offered to buy one of their tickets if they bought me two. We ended up in the first row of upper box seats on a blistering cold night with winds howling off Lake Erie. What a show.
The Hitchcock twist to this tale was the night I came home from work prior to heading up to the concert. My wife Ellie had been to the doctor that day and we found out we were going to have a baby. October 6, 1987.
Day 2 …
Ah, the memories overwhelm me. There’s not a lot to do growing up in Canton, Ohio when you’re 16 with a driver’s license. What’s crazy is that the best thing happening was driving north on Cleveland Avenue to a little po-dunk one stoplight rural community (mid 70’s) called Uniontown. It was there we found salvation … classmates Sally & Red were part of the handful of friends making the journey to Boulder Junction. This old lumber built structure made dulcimer/wood instruments and would host musicians on the weekends. Performing on a tiny stage on a monthly rotation were the likes of Alex Bevan, Charlie Wiener, Jim Ballard, and the man with the booming voice John Bassette. With no liquor license (only natural fruit juices were sold) we had no problem attending. Closing your eyes and listening to their records can literally take you back to that heavenly space.
Ah, but the Hitchcock twist to the tale. As one of the major instigators of planning the Senior Cut Day Party, I took a flyer and wrote a letter to John Bassette pretty much describing the above and wondering if he would come perform. Never heard back from him. On the afternoon of this epic day, Steve Red Michel was playing guitar on the sound system we set up in the shelter. A large African American man shows up with a guitar. OMG he showed up. He played several songs then disappeared. Like an angel …. Thanks Alex B for inspiring me to tell this story. 💖 RIP John Richard Bassette 22/29/1941 to 11/9/2006. 💖
Day 3 …
It was only in January that I took an extended weekend roadtrip to Memphis. I’ve been to Music City several times for AmericanaFest, but had never driven the extra three hours to see the historical landmarks of Staxx, Sun, Graceland, and the Lorraine Motel. Breaking up the trip with overnights in Nashville each way equated to finding some good live music. Brandi Carlile was playing the historic Ryman Auditorium and had sold out all 6 nights! The secondary market prices for good tickets were pretty steep, but I kept my eye on the listings. Finally, I found 2 single tickets on the main floor aisle Row Q and S for $40/each.
After trucking down the highway, checking into our hotel, and having dinner. It was off to the Ryman. Brilliant singer/songwriter Natalie Hemby (part of The Highwomen) opened and I kept my eye on some empty seats in front of me. As soon as her set ended, I grabbed Ellie and waltzed her down to the 9th row where four spots were unattended. Needless to say, this is where we remained.
Brandi Carlile put on a show that was Springsteen-esque. Besides Hemby, The War & The Treaty and Sheryl Crow were guest performers. The Grammy Award artist and producer of several albums by other songwriters just blew the audience way leaving it all on stage. I bought this record when I came home.
The Hitchcock twist to the tale is that this would be the last big show I’ll see for the foreseeable future … January 16, 2020.
Nirvana (full-band instrumental) Hold Out Your Hand Raise Hell Lovesick Blues (Hank Williams) The Story The Eye A Case of You (Joni Mitchell) The Mother Do Right Woman, Do Right Man (Aretha Franklin) (with The War and Treaty) If She Ever Leaves Me (The Highwomen) Crowded Table Redesigning Women (The Highwomen) Redemption Day (with Sheryl Crow) Pride and Joy Encore: Mainstream Kid The Joke Cannonball Party of One
Day 4 ….
This album marks my very first assignment with Lost Highway Records on March 14, 2002. I mailed in a postcard from a Lyle Lovett CD asking fans to be part of the LH street team. After some time passed, I was contacted by the label to assist in the Cleveland market. Those that attended this show remember it was the “migraine” concert in which Adam’s performed without a spotlight on him. I worked dozens of shows (while still running the optical office), including assignments in Columbus, and was later promoted to “Captain” status. Artists included the likes of Adams, Lovett, Willie Nelson, Lucinda Williams, Elvis Costello, Kim Richey, Tift Merrit, The Jayhawks, Ryan Bingham, and John Eddie to the Mercury/UMG label promoting singer/songwriters eventually falling into a category now referred as Americana. When I started writing my music column, I penned a letter to label founder Luke Lewis thanking him for the opportunity to represent LH and moving on. Besides connecting with some of these artists, I met lots of great people along the way …
The Hitchcock twist to this story is a great book by Thomas O’Keefe titled “Waiting to Derail: Ryan Adams and Whiskeytown, Alt-Country’s Brilliant Wreck” that came out on June 26, 2018. Adam’s demise quickly followed with a postponement of released material. The other twist is I chose this album on 04/20/2020 …
Day 5 ….
Emmylou. That’s all I need to say. One of the most iconic voices in music. She’s on just about everybody’s records lending her gorgeous vocals besides a long and lustrous songbook of her own. Portions of her career with Gram Parsons and her very own Hot Band are Hall of Fame worthy.
I really wanted to see Emmylou in concert and she wasn’t coming to Cleveland anytime soon. I caught wind of a show in Pittsburgh by Calliope – The Pittsburgh Folk Music Society on May 19, 2000 at Carnegie Library Music Hall. Time for a roadtrip.
The space was like walking into a Shakespearean theater. Of course, I had decent seats on the floor of this intimate, old performance space with the small balcony extremely close to the stage. Emmylou was performing with the Spyboy band and ranks in my top twenty concerts. The album shown below is my favorite Emmylou record and gives me chills everytime I hear it.
The Hitchcock twist to this story is that the lead guitarist for Spyboy was the one and only Buddy Miller (wearing the baseball cap). I have become a fan and admirer of both Buddy and his wife Julie’s work; especially due to my wingman I called out with this post.
Day 6 ….
I initially began writing Minkins Music in January 2007 for Mimi’s Magazine, my longest supporter, before retiring the column in December 2019. A story on Griffin W House back in 2008 during the Flying Upside Down tour took me behind the music and the life of the Springfield, Ohio native now residing in Nashville. Not only was the story a shot in the arm for Griffin, but it elevated my game leading to additional avenues to expand my column.
A college degree from Miami of Ohio in 2002 in English Literature and Writing, his thoughts were to enroll in graduate school, but his poetry professor gave him the inspiration to channel his creativity toward being a songwriter rather than following in his footsteps. The passion and determination in House’s songs have since been filled with personal, richly detailed snapshots of his life and Flying Upside Down received my “Best Album of 2008” award. The record hit singles “One Thing”, “Live To Be Free”, “Waiting For The Rain to Come Down”, and “The Guy That Says Goodbye to You is Out of His Mind” first caught my ear from Mike Marrone, program director and DJ extraordinaire of the somewhat deceased “The Loft” channel on SXM.
The Hitchcock twist to this story is that a lot has happened since for House, as well as my own personal story, with the highs and lows along the roller coaster of living life that all of us encounter. But music, and especially writing stories, is the common thread that connects many of us … including those mentioned in this post 💖.
Day 7 …. today is the final official day and I included albums #8 & #9 to weave this story
I grew up in Fort Wayne, Indiana and my sister was a dozen years older than me. Along with children’s records from Disney, Tubby The Tubba, and The Chipmunks, there was a copy of Peter, Paul and Mary sitting out to play on the phonograph. Moving was released on January 15, 1963 and I had just turned four years old. I played songs like “Settle Down”, “Flora”, “Morning Train”, and “A’Soalin” over and over again …. not to mention big hits “This Land Is Your Land” and “Puff”. Along with invisible friend George, they kept me company.
On Feb. 9, 1964, The Beatles made their first live U.S. television appearance on the Ed Sullivan Show. More than 70 million Americans gathered around their televisions to watch four young men from Liverpool make history. I had just turned five years old, and we watched Ed Sullivan every Sunday night. The following year Help was released on August 6, 1965 along with a movie on August 25, 1965. Two of the first movies I remember seeing in the theater when I was six years old were Thunderball (Dad’s pick) and Help (Karen’s pick).
In the fall of 1966, the family packed up and moved to Canton. I was seven years old and my sister was long gone to Indiana University. We lived in a townhouse apartment for a couple years before moving into a little bungalow. At some point my sister transferred from IU to Kent State pursuing a fine arts degree. There were so many historical points on the timeline to mention leading up to the release of Tommy by The Who on May 17, 1969. We received two newspapers a day (The Cleveland Dealer and Canton Repository) before cable and 24/7 news reporting. My folks had a record collection made up primarily of Broadway Shows, Classical Music, and comedy records. I still had my kids records and some 45’s purchased at the local department store Giant Tiger. By this time I was ten years old. I remember sitting in our little bedroom turned family room when my sister said you need to listen to this record. I must have played it a zillion times.
The Hitchcock twist to this story is that I’m not sure if my sister remembers or realizes the influence of these three records on my vinyl addiction. I’m sixty-one years young now. 💖
Ah, but does there need to be another Hitchcock twist to tie these all together? My last posting was on December 25, 2019. After twelve years of writing it was time to take a break. I had a difficult time just trying to sit down and write a story about the Nashville/Memphis road trip that took place a few months ago. Thinking about this challenge of not just picking records I love (I have a sixteen cube Ikea unit of vinyl and another six drawers of CDs) but one’s that had either an interesting story or impact on my life. Maybe there’s still a little life in these fingers after all. Stay tuned for the rest of the story …

What if I told you I’m in love with a band that was named after its mastermind’s pet snail? And that said band promoted itself for a time by representing its music as having been produced by a snail — and that its label (Yer Bird) was fine with that? And that the band’s website to this day features a page containing nothing but photos of snails?
What if I further told you that the same band decided, after finally agreeing to self- identify as humans, to obscure their identities by adopting the family moniker “Jones” and letting each band member preface his or her common surname (though none are related) with a jokey, old-timey Appalachian name?
Thus we have: Hezekiah Jones (aka, songwriting snail-lover Raphael “Raph” Cutrufello); Pocono Jones (Brad Hinton); Roy G. Biv Jones (Daniel Bower); Kiwi Jones (Kiley Ryan); Tones Jones (Andy Keenan); and Peter L.V. Jones (Alex Luquet).
Welcome to the surreal, humorous, sometimes dark, sometimes darkly humorous and always strangely magical world of Hezekiah Jones, the best and certainly most unique folk / Americana / sui generis band you probably haven’t yet heard of.
Orbiting around the fertile imagination and songwriting talents of Cutrufello, this collective of Philadelphia-area musicians — often featuring Phil D’Agostino in place of Luquet on bass and on this night featuring Keenan, recently returned to Philadelphia from Nashville, on pedal steel and banjo — has been quietly compiling a strong catalog of quirky, mundanely-yet-transcendentally beautiful and always hummable songs since the mid-2000s. A good number of those songs have the morbidly comedic feel of an Edward Gorey illustration; some seem to harken back to a vaguely Civil War-era America that history books could never capture, while others live in a weird, semi sci-fi time & space all their own.
In short, Cutrufello’s aim is off-kilter and intentionally headed off the beaten path — though his songs simultaneously seem hauntingly familiar, like misheard hymns or battle marches. As “Hundred Miles In,” from the band’s most recent, 2015 full-length
album In Loving Memory of oosi Lockjaw (yes, you read that right) puts it: “I know you’re kinda strange / ‘cause you’re not really into the normal stuff / You know you’re kinda weird / when you’re not really into humans that much.” (He prefers snails, obviously.)
If you’re curious about this curious band, …oosi Lockjaw is a decent ledge from which to leap into their eccentric universe. Have You Seen Our New Fort? — a 2011 release that features 14 different players and incorporates such unusual instrumentation (especially for a “folk” album) as glockenspiel, waterboards, sleigh bells, trombones, baritone saxophone and clarinet — is another one.
Though you may not have heard of them, Hezekiah Jones has been a pretty big draw in Philadelphia for a while now, filling places like Johnny Brenda’s, the Ardmore Music Hall, and on this particular evening, the newish venue 118 North in Wayne (on the western side of Philly’s “Main Line”), where Cutrufello hosts a weekly Wednesday night open mic / jam that draws many of the area’s best musicians.
That same venue was packed to the gills with Hezekiah aficionados last Saturday. Darlyngton, the love-child band of Jack Shoudy and Emily MacDonald (who grew up in Wayne) — led off with a set dominated by danceable Grateful Dead jams and lesser known covers, including an interesting rendition of John Prine’s classic “Sam Stone.” A tall redhead with a strong voice and swirling freeform dance moves, MacDonald was the visual focal point, while the rest of the band played their parts more than competently, luring a good portion of the audience onto the dance floor by set’s end.
The Hezekiah Jones sextet then squished onto the smallish stage to play two long sets, performing 25 songs en toto, and re-peforming a snippet of one of those songs (their cover of Sonny & Cher’s “I Got You Babe”) at least eight times, by my count.
To be completely honest, after the third or fourth annoying repetition of that snippet, my reaction was WTF?!?
Cutrufello later reminded me that Februrary 2nd was Groundhog Day, and that that particular snippet — introduced heartily each time with the phrase “Okay campers, rise and shine, and don’t forget your booties, ‘cause it’s COLD OUT THERE!” by drummer Roy G. Biv Hones / Daniel Bower (who also serves as the regular drummer for central Pennsylvania Americana veterans Frog Holler) — plays on the radio as Bill Murray wakes redundantly to his alarm clock in the 1993 comedy of that name.
Now I’m not just annoyed; I’m thoroughly amused.
Cutrufello, you see, is a charmingly wicked, wickedly charming fellow, in his mild- mannered, sweet-natured way. He’s the kind of guy who can annoy you by pulling your leg but then instantly disarm your distemper with a wink and a warm grin (or perhaps a shot of gin). His songs have a similar effect, reeling you in to what feels like a joke that may or may not be on you, but then unreeling them out so that they come to resonate, sometimes immediately, sometimes only in hindsight, like a Zen master’s firm knock on an initiate’s head.
In short, if you’ve never seen Hezekiah Jones live, you’re in for a treat when you do — especially if you like your folk and/or Americana mysterious and a bit offbeat (in a good way). To give you some hint of what you might see and hear, highlights from the Groundhog Day show included:
Cutrufello’s warm vocals on “Spare the Whiskey,” complemented beautifully by violinist Kiley Ryan’s harmonies
Similarly lovely harmonies and guitar accompaniment on “Agnes of the World,” the lead-off song from their debut album, Hezekiah Says You’re A-OK
Keenan’s mournful pedal steel accompanying Cutrufello’s clever lyrics on “Cupcakes for the Army,” featuring such Zen koan-ish lines as “Who needs keys when you got logic? / Who needs logic when you’ve got doubt?” and “No one wins a war anymore with compromise and smiles / Real religion’s in the mind of a child”
The second set’s consecutive sequencing of six of Cutrufello’s best songs, including the 2018 release “If You Harden on the Inside,” which led into a truly astonishing drum solo by Bower. That was followed by the short, cryptic and quickly accelerating “That Panel Where the Soap is at on the Machines” and the crowd-pleasing quartet of “Albert Hash,” “Yeshe and Horus,” the carnivalesque waltz/singalong “Cannonball (I’ve Got a Little Room)” and the Squirrel Nut Zipper- ish “Mind Malaise,” adorned by Hinton’s superb Telecaster soloThe band capped the second set with tasty renditions of a couple of cover tunes: Sparklehorse’s “Knives of Summertime,” on which the Joneses laid out for an extended jam, and the Palace Brothers’ / Bonnie “Prince” Billy’s “I Am a Cinematographer,” featuring tastefully effective fiddle and guitar solos by Ryan and Hinton respectively.Though they’re not touring widely these days (“With kids and mortgages and such, sleeping on floors and making minimal money just don’t make the sense it used to make,” says Cutrufello), Hezekiah Jones does play fairly regularly around Philly, and Cutrufello and the other band members are mainstays at the Robin & Beth Fest each summer. If you’ve never seen them live and are in the area, you owe it to yourself to check them out.

Single Review: “Ghost” by Badflower
Badflower is probably a new band to many, though the Los Angeles-based quartet has spent several years cutting their teeth, preparing for the noteworthy tours they have since been a part of, where they made certain that they were a supporting band that patrons would want to check out. The heavy touring schedule they’ve kept (which has included some appearances at major festivals) has been instrumental in them getting to where they’re at now, where they’re poised to be one of the next biggest things in the modern rock era. That’s sure what their latest single, “Ghost” (out via Big Machine Records / John Varvatos Records), leads one to believe as Badflower continues to build anticipation for their forthcoming debut LP. “Ghost” has become a smashing success on some of the rock charts, probably becoming one of the most played songs currently on radio, and for good reason. However, where a lot of songs in this modern era achieve that because they’re catchy and have a good vibe, Badflower went a different route in scoring this hit: they made something with substance.
“Ghost” is a testament to the fact that bands can still write something meaningful, something with passion and heart and find an audience for it. There are multiple ways to interpret “Ghost”, all depending on the listeners’ perspective. Some may consider it outright morbid and depressing, while it may offer some sort of hope to others thanks to the artfully way it deals with the sensitive topic of depression and self-harm that can result from some cases. Whichever way you choose to view it, there’s no arguing that it’s an incredibly visceral song that delves into the complex emotions people in those circumstances are experiencing, neither condemning nor glorifying their choices, all while trying to offer some sort of insight for those struggling as well as those close to them. The story depicted by the lyrics begins innocently enough, introducing the listener to a person making a cry for help, cutting themselves, but being measured with their actions. The final lines from the first verse then set the tone, “…And all I really wanted was someone to give a little fuck. But I waited there forever and nobody even looked up,” Josh Katz mournfully croons, depicting a person who feels ignored an unimportant, and therefore doesn’t believe there’s much reason to keep going. Katz and fellow band mates Joey Morrow (lead guitar), Alex Espiritu (bass) and Anthony Sonetti (drums) cover a lot of ground in the slightly less than four and a half minutes that “Ghost” runs, the severity of the situation becoming more apparent, the character in the song acknowledging their thoughts aren’t normal and expressing their fears, though it’s countered by steadily feeling as if existing is too much of a burden to bear, as the line, “…this life is overwhelming and I'm ready for the next one,” makes so painfully clear. It’s a story that’s real and raw, and bound to strike a chord with quite a few, but as bleak as it often sounds, there are little things peppered in meant to make anyone who may need to hear it second guess their potential actions. The vivid bridge is the best example of that, especially how it ends, “…The cutting part was easy but regretting it is so fucked.” Whether it’s the idea of suicide or actually following through with it, that’s a tricky subject matter for any band to try to tackle, yet Badflower has done it masterfully. With “Ghost” they’ve created a song that does it’s best to capture how some people may feel, like as if they don’t matter and have no direct impact on anyone’s lives, especially when an attempt at getting a helping hand goes unnoticed. It also tries to offer a different perspective, though, such as the thoughts that occur once there’s no going back and how it may not actually be as freeing as how some might imagine it will be. As well as it’s written in regards to the story it tells, the emotive layers of “Ghost” are only bolstered by the music bed. It’s a prime example of how music and lyrics are meant to interact with one another, striking up a sort of harmony in order to convey the full depth of emotions that any quality song should have. In this case it’s the more tranquil, at times even barren first verse that is reflective of the isolation and depression, the gentle riffs and atmospheric percussion enhancing that mood. The first chorus sees a dramatic rise in emotions, the guitars, bass and drums unleashing a sudden onslaught that sounds blistering before slipping back into some feeling of being disconnected. There’s something marvelous about the way it’s so restrained, roars to life and then tapers back off. It so accurately captures the internal struggle that is transpiring, growing more painful and even chaotic during the interlude as everything comes to a head. The near a cappella delivery of the first segment of the bridge is absolutely phenomenal, Katz sounding desperate, broken and at the end of his rope, the track ultimately unleashing the full potential it has been hinting at by becoming a beast of a song in its final moments. “Ghost” is everything a truly amazing song should be, the members of Badflower having essentially caught lightning in a bottle with this one. It carries a powerful message and is executed so meticulously in order for said message to fully resonate with people. Katz, Morrow, Espiritu, and Sonetti didn’t hold anything back when it came to penning this one and it shows, the heart and soul being evident throughout this palpable piece that is alt rock at its finest. It’s of such a high caliber that it’s one of those songs a band could spend a whole career trying to write and still not succeed at it. The kind of song that, in a way, is timeless and will be crucial to the legacy that Badflower is sure to have. It also sets a high standard for their upcoming full-length record. “Ghost” will be central to it, no doubt, but will the other songs they’ve written be on par with this one? Hopefully so; and if they are, it will ensure Badflower ranks as one of the most elite of the next group of future rock stars. NBA All-Star Weekend schedule 2017: Times, TV schedule and all the events
New Orleans plays host to the 2017 NBA All-Star Game, but there are a host of other events as well.
NBA All-Star Weekend is nearly upon us, and the NBA will take its talents from last year’s festivities in Toronto and shuttle them down to New Orleans for the 66th annual All-Star Game.
The weekend will kick off on Friday, Feb. 17 with the BBVA Rising Stars Challenge, headlined by Team U.S.A.’s young stars in Karl-Anthony Towns and Devin Booker. They’ll take on the World Team, led by Knicks budding star Kristaps Porzingis.
All-Star Saturday is littered with three events, kicked off by the bigs vs. smalls in the Taco Bell Skills Challenge. Next up is the Three-Point Shootout, where reigning champion Klay Thompson will look to defend his title against a tough field of opponents that includes Kyrie Irving, Kyle Lowry, and Eric Gordon. Saturday night is topped off with the Sprite Slam Dunk Contest, with a four-man field headlined by last year’s runner-up, Aaron Gordon.
And on Sunday comes the main event — the NBA All-Star Game featuring the league’s top talent. The Golden State Warriors will have four representatives, but the West also features All-Stars in Russell Westbrook, James Harden, and DeMarcus Cousins. Over East, Irving and LeBron James highlight a guard-heavy team looking to bounce back after dropping the ball in the last two years.
There are a host of other events scheduled for this weekend, and we’ve got the full agenda laid out for you below:
