Chapter 9
The End of an Era
Welcome back to the Duchelli household, where we are hurtling towards the final stretches of our first generation.
I’m not sure what is going on here, but I think Johnny is showing off some yoga moves. On the sidewalk. To a stray cat.
His daughter Jodi is pretending she doesn’t know him in the background.
To increase the household income enough to send Cora off to university, everyone is working hard. On top of her criminal activities, Alex has taking up writing a few books and painting.
Cora is still single and has no real friends, so for Love Day, she gives a rose to her beloved sister.
Brielle and Shawn used Love Day to finally make it official. No one was surprised, as they have been together for a while.
Another visitor dropping by is one of Brie’s best friends, Ariana Broke. She’s one of Angela and Dustin Broke’s twin daughters.
This is Adriana, the other twin. Both twins are very close with Brie.
Cora has neither the time nor inclination for making friends. It’s all about homework.
After fulfilling his aspiration to be the greatest bodybuilder ever, Don is back to being a serial romantic. He still has strong opinions on cheating, and most of the women closer to his age are married, so the dating pool is honestly a little sparse. Therefore, he invites out the somewhat younger Evie Delgato.
Evie tells Don all about her college, and mentions how she isn’t planning on settling down in a serious relationship until she gets her career started, so she’s open to just having some fun.
And so, after “having some fun” in a back room of the bar…
… Don kisses Evie goodbye before she heads back to her dorm.
Cora has gotten a job as a barista, which means she has to get up insanely early. So she’s always tired and in a bad mood. Late night studying does not work well with 5 AM workdays.
After work and a nap, she barely has time to fall asleep in her breakfast before going to school.
Her barista job, however, has given her a newfound appreciation for coffee, and she manages to talk her parents into letting her buy a fancy coffee maker at home.
Much better! Hopefully this’ll get her up in the morning.
While out on the town one day, Don hears someone cry in the ladies room. Out comes Morgan Fyres-Munch. Don asks her what is wrong, and she tells him that her and Wolfgang’s marriage has been rocky for a while, due to the stress of them living with her aging parents, and he finally had enough and left her.
Always the gentleman, Don cheers Morgan up and invites her to join him for coffee.
They hit it off immediately, and Don does his best to make Morgan feel better about herself.
It doesn’t take long before Morgan starts flirting back.
And to no one’s surprise, they end up in a back room.
Cora is really doing nothing but studying. She’s trying to get accepted into the distinguished degree in Physics at Foxbury University, and that takes hard work.
One evening, the girls are given school projects as usual, and Brie brings, besides one of the Broke twins, this guy.
His name is Aidan, and it turns out he’s a bit of a nerdy loner. Maybe Brie brought him because he reminds her of Cora. They immediately bond over robots.
“Alex, babe, will you still love me when I’m old and wrinkly?”
“Of course, honey.”
And so, Don is the first member of the family to hit old age.
Cora, would it kill you to leave the voidcritters alone and attend your father’s birthday? Sheesh. Even Christie from his fitness club is more excited than you.

Alex Cora's NSFW Brag To Red Sox Players About Astros Cheating Scandal
It’s been a long time since the Houston Astros cheating scandal first came out. At the time, the news rocked the entire baseball world. It’s not often that a World Series-winning team would be outed for using illegal means of stealing signs. Everyone involved publicly denied this statement… but that doesn’t apply in private, apparently. It was revealed that Alex Cora bragged to his Boston Red Sox…

Freely admit I’m an Astros fan.
I get they cheated in 2017 and were punished properly…
But: why the Yankees keep calling the team cheaters when they literally signed Carlos Beltran and Marwin Gonzalez to their teams…
Who by the way, along with Carlos Correa and Alex Cora were called out by the MLB for being the BIGGEST cheaters in that year,
I’ll never know. Because the irony is very telling.

Slave Ships
Slave ships were large cargo ships specially converted for the purpose of transporting slaves. Such ships were also known as "Guineamen" because the trade involved human trafficking to and from the Guinea coast in West Africa.
Atlantic slave trade
In the early 1600s, more than a century after the arrival of Europeans to the Americas, demand for unpaid labor to work plantations made slave-trading a profitable business. The peak time of slave ships to the Atlantic passage was between the 18th and early-19th centuries, when large plantations developed in the southern colonies of North America.
To ensure profitability, the owners of the ships divided their hulls into holds with little headroom, so they could transport as many slaves as possible. Unhygienic conditions, dehydration, dysentery and scurvy led to a high mortality rate, on average 15% and up to a third of captives. Often the ships carried hundreds of slaves, who were chained tightly to plank beds. For example, the slave ship Henrietta Marie carried about 200 slaves on the long Middle Passage. They were confined to cargo holds with each slave chained with little room to move.
The most significant routes of the slave ships led from the north-western and western coasts of Africa to South America and the south-east coast of what is today the United States, and the Caribbean. As many as 20 million Africans were transported by ship. The transportation of slaves from Africa to America was known as the Middle Passage of the triangular trade.
Conditions On Slave Ships
Enslaved People
The Slave Trade Act 1788, also known as Dolben's Act, regulated conditions on board British slave ships for the first time since the slave trade started. It was introduced to the United Kingdom parliament by Sir William Dolben, an advocate for the abolition of slavery. For the first time, limits were placed on the number of enslaved people that could be carried. Under the terms of the act, ships could transport 1.67 slaves per ton up to a maximum of 207 tons burthen, after which only one slave per ton could be carried. The well-known slave ship Brookes was limited to carrying 454 people; it had previously transported as many as 609 enslaved. Olaudah Equiano was among the supporters of the act but it was opposed by some abolitionists, such as William Wilberforce, who feared it would establish the idea that the slave trade simply needed reform and regulation, rather than complete abolition. Slave counts can also be estimated by deck area rather than registered tonnage, which results in a lower number of errors and only 6% deviation from reported figures.
This limited reduction in the overcrowding on slave ships may have reduced the on-board death rate, but this is disputed by some historians
Sailors and crew
In the 18th and early 19th centuries, the sailors on slave ships were often poorly paid and subject to brutal discipline and treatment. Furthermore, a crew mortality rate of around 20% was expected during a voyage, with sailors dying as a result of disease, flogging or slave uprisings. While conditions for the crew were far better than those of the enslaved people, they remained harsh and contributed to a high death rate. Sailors often had to live and sleep without shelter on the open deck for the entirety of the Atlantic voyage as the space below deck was occupied by slaves.
Disease, specifically malaria and yellow fever, was the most common cause of death among sailors. A high crew mortality rate on the return voyage was in the captain's interests as it reduced the number of sailors who had to be paid on reaching the home port. Crew members who survived were frequently cheated out of their wages on their return. These aspects of the slave trade were widely known; the notoriety of slave ships amongst sailors meant those joining slave ship crews did so through coercion or because they could find no other employment. This was often the case for sailors who had spent time in prison.
Abolition of the slave trade
The African slave trade was outlawed by the United States and the United Kingdom in 1807. The applicable UK act was the Abolition of the Slave Trade Act and outlawed the slave trade throughout the British Empire. The US law took effect on 1 January 1808. After that date, all US and British slave ships leaving Africa were legally pirate vessels subject to capture by the United States Navy or Royal Navy. In 1815, at the Council of Vienna, Spain, Portugal, France, and the Netherlands also agreed to abolish their slave trade. Between 1807 and 1860 British vessels would capture slave ships and free the slaves; they captured 1,600 ships and freed 160,000 slaves in this time.
After abolition, slave ships adopted quicker, more maneuverable forms to evade capture by naval warships, one favorite form being the Baltimore Clipper. Some had hulls fitted with copper sheathing. This was very expensive work that at this time was only commonly done to Royal Navy vessels; however, it increased speed by preventing the growth of marine weed on the hull, which would otherwise cause drag. The speed of slave ships made them attractive ships to repurpose for piracy, and also made them attractive for naval use after capture; USS Nightingale and HMS Black Joke were examples of such vessels. HMS Black Joke had a notable career in Royal Navy service and was responsible for capturing a number of slave ships and freeing many hundreds of slaves.
There have been attempts by descendants of African slaves to sue Lloyd's of London for playing a key role in underwriting insurance policies taken out on slave ships bringing slaves from Africa to the Americas.

All of the Mikaelsons deserved to live happily - Klaus should have gotten to raise his daughter
My four least favorite characters, past or present:
Moriarty (I loved to hate him), Sargent Sally Donavan, Mary
Erica, Mr Lahey , Kali , Meredith Walker
Gil Bobbsey (he’s so manipulative), Everrett Hudosn, Ceila Hudson, Diana Marvin
Metatron, God, Samuel Campbell, Mary Winchester
Gigi, Stevie, Hugh Normous, Gorog
Esther, Mikael, Dhalia, Aurora de Martel
A character I’m indifferent about:
Anderson - he felt remorseful after thinking that Sherlock was dead
Kira - Her character was good but I dint love her
Bess - she can be a little shallow at times
Meg- her voice annoyed me sometimes but she loved Cas
Professor Krumbs could be little mean
Sometimes I loved her and other I hated her but in the end I think she is a strong female character
A ship I’ve never been able to get into/ shouldn’t have happened:
John and Mary - She wasn’t a great wife
Derek and Baeden- I didn’t see any chemistry at all
Nick and Nancy - Even they are endgame in the books, they didn’t have any chemistry on screen
Sam and Ruby - Mostly cause she was really sus from the beginning
Justin and Rosie - He was better with Juliet
Hope and Roman - He used her and that’s horrible on such a young girl
A ship I’ve never been able to get over:
Sherlock and John whether it be friends are lovers - they are supreme
Stiles and Derek- Even though its not canon its the best ship on the show
Nancy and Ace- They haven’t gotten together yet but I love the angst
Cas and Dean whether it be friends are lovers - they are supreme
Alex and Mason - those 2 were cute
Rebekah and Marcel- It took so long for them to be together but they finally got there
A cute, low-key ship:
Sherlock and Mycroft (not romantically- ew) as the best of brothers
Scott and Alison were so soft
Nick and George are cute- they are healthy and communicate really well
Sam and Elieen
Justin and Juliet - those nerdy cuties
Davina and Kol
My favourite storyline/moment:
Sherlock tells John he is alive - that was shocking
Dark Stiles - Nigutsune
Nancy finding about her true heritage and talking to Ryan and Nace
Cas saves Dean and becomes a part of the rest of the show
Alex erases herself and her brothers in the movie
All Klaus and Hope scenes
A storyline that never should have been written:
Sherlock’s long lost sister
The whole of season 6b
The death of Owen Marvin - he didn’t deserve to die.
Dean’s final death and Sam having to live without him
Alex and Justin accidentally turn Max int a girl
The death of Klaus, Elijah and Hayley in the final season just because of legacies

The Breakup
JACK’S POV:
I’ve dumped someone before. It’s easy. Just say it’s over and leave. So why is this so fucking hard? That’s a stupid question. It’s because I’m still in love with her. I probably always will be. But I have to do the right thing. When you love someone, you let them go, right?
Knock on the door. Simple. You’ve done it a hundred times before. The sound of my fist on the wood echoes in the empty hall. I hear shuffling and the door opens. Alex stands there, and all my resolve fades. Her hair is tied back in a haphazard bun, flour on her cheek. Her smile widens when she sees me.
“Jack! Perfect timing. The pie is almost ready to come out of the oven.” She grabs my hand and pulls me inside. I can’t do this. I can’t. She’s my everything, I- no. I need to do this. It’s what’s best for her.
“Can we talk?” I squeak out. “Of course. You alright?” She leads me over to the couch. I don’t sit. Just get it over with. Quick and painless, like pulling off a bandaid. Three words. Say it and leave.
“We need to breakup.”
Her face falls. “W-what?” I look away. I know that if I see her face, I’ll break. “It’s not working out.” I turn to leave but she grabs my arm. “I at least deserve a better explanation than that.”
“I don’t love you anymore!” I shout. The words are bitter on my tongue. Just saying them feels like knife in my gut. Then I see the look on her face. Her eyes are wet with tears. “I-all of it was a lie. Can’t say I’m surprised. You know, I thought you were going to be my forever. Guess I was just dreaming.”
I want to apologize, to kiss the tears from her cheeks, to tell her I do love her. “Goodbye, Alex.” I choke on my words. I turn and leave, silently closing the door behind me. As soon as I’m out of ear shot I break. I muffle my sobs with my hand. The pain is sharp, never ending. I deserve it.
I walk home slowly. My feet are heavy. The wind is cold, but I leave my jacket unbuttoned. Maybe if the cold numbs my skin, it will numb the hurt. Memories of Alex and I run through my mind, torturing me with regret.
I remember when we first met. I spilled green paint on her at the theatre. Our first date, sitting on that corner drinking soda. The day we went to the movies and we made a bet to see who could catch more popcorn in their mouth. The movie nights we had where she would lay her head on my chest. The kisses, so full of love. The way her smile made me melt.
I open the front door of my apartment. My coat gets dropped on the floor. Pictures of us sit on the mantle, mocking me. I pick up the one of us at the theatre. The night of our three year anniversary. I scream and throw it at the ground, shattering the glass.
Alex’s face stares up at me. A crack cuts her in half. Regret consumes me. I kneel down amongst the shards and pick up the picture. I pull it out of the frame. I place it back on the mantle and collapse onto the couch. I place my head in my hands as I cry.
Someone knocks on the door. I don’t answer. “Jack. I know you’re in there. Open up, it’s Cora.” I trudge to the door and unlock it. Cora rushes inside, an angry look on her face. “I just got a call from Alex. Jack Francis Kelly, what the hell did you do?”
“I did the right thing.” Cora’s eyes widen. “Did you cheat on her?” She hisses. “What? No! Of course not!”
“Then why the fuck did you break up with her?”
“I didn’t love her anymore.” The words don’t hurt anymore. I just feel hollow. “We both know that’s bullshit, Kelly. Tell me the damn truth.” I sit down on the couch. I refuse to give her an answer. “Alex called me sobbing. You broke her heart! She loved you, really loved you. And you loved her too. I could see it in the way you looked at her. You messed up, Jack. Big time.”
“You think I don’t fucking know that?” I shout. Tears roll down my face. I don’t bother trying to hold them back. “I love her more than anything or anyone in the world. That’s why I had to do this.” Cora sighs in exasperation. “How are you doing this out of love? There’s no love in this.”
“She deserves better, alright? She deserves someone who can take care of her. Who can give her the life she’s worthy of. She’ll get over me, she’ll move on. She’ll find someone better. She’s smart, beautiful, funny, and I-I’m just... I’m just me. Alex is my soulmate, but I can’t be hers.”
“Why not? You two love each other. When you get love like this, you don’t let it go.”
“I have to. I’ll only hold her back. She got offered a promotion. She would have had to move to Chicago. She turned down the job because of me. And until I’m gone, she won’t get the life she deserves.”
“Why can’t you get it through your thick head? You don’t get to make that decision for her. She doesn’t want that life. She wants a life with you.”
The two of us go silent.
“You two love each other. Make this right.” She hands me my coat.
I put it on and run out the door. I run all the way to her apartment. I stand in front of that door, trying to get the courage to knock. I bring my fist to the wood. The door swings open a few moments later. Alex’s hair is all over the place. Her eyes are red from tears. I’m sure mine are too. “What are you doing here?” She coldly asks.
“Alex, I-I’m so sorry. I made a mistake. A big one. I broke up with you because you deserve better. But Cora reminded me, I don’t get to make that choice for you. A-and I’m...I love you. So fucking much. That’s why I felt like I needed to leave. Because you deserve the world, and I couldn’t give that to you.”
She looks at me with such sadness. “How can I believe you?” My heart splinters. “You can’t. And I don’t expect you to. I’ll wait for you. Even if you never forgive me. I love you and I always will.” She doesn’t say anything. I nod my head in a silent goodbye. I’m almost to the end of the hall when she calls my name.
“I can’t lie. What you said, that broke me. What you did, as terrible as it was, it was out of love. You care, so fiercely. You messed up. But I forgive you. I love you Jack. I can’t stop loving you, no matter how much I want to.”
She runs into my arms. I hold her tight, never wanting to let her go. “I’m sorry. I am so, so sorry.” I whisper into her hair. She pulls away a bit. “It doesn’t matter to me if you’re a billionaire or living on pennies, Jack. No place will ever be home without you in it. Promise me you won’t leave me like this again. Please.”
I don’t have to think twice. I couldn’t leave her if I tried.
“I promise.”

First Lines
Stolen from @katvonbirb
Rules are: List the first lines of your last 20 stories (if you have less than 20, just list them all!). See if there are any patterns. Choose your favorite opening line.
—
Tinsel and Mistletoe (VLD)
The sun is peeking through the curtains, the single ray of pale morning light landing right on his eyelid. Lance grabs the edge of his bedsheet and drags it over his face, smothering the light and silently cursing his past self for not properly drawing the curtains shut.
There Be Dragons (HP)
Harry and his godfathers move to London just after his 11th birthday. Sirius’ estranged mother passed away, and he inherited his childhood house.
Finally Free (JatP)
They’re arguing about the harmonies of their newest song when Flynn pushes open the door and announces that Julie and her need to talk about outfits.
“We don’t even have our next gig yet,” Luke replies. “We should finish working out this bridge before talking about costumes.”
Something Cosmic (RNM)
Guerin is… No, not Guerin, Alex admonishes himself. Michael. Michael is waiting for him by the car, leaning against it in a very cowboy posture, thumbs in the belt loops of his pants. He seems relaxed, but the way he quickly licks his bottom lip as he looks at Alex betrays his nerves. Alex smiles softly, pushing down his own nerves knotting his throat.
In the Morning (RNM)
Michael wakes up to a thundering headache, which isn’t fair. He didn’t even have anything to drink – he’s not stupid, he knows his metabolism doesn’t handle alcohol well. He does remember the taste of punch on his lips though. No. Not on his lips.
Rush (TW)
The snow creeks under Stiles’ feet, a soft, muffled sound in the stillness of the night. Everything is soft in the park. Muted, somehow, even though he can see in details he wouldn’t have been able to make out in daylight before.
Recommencement (Merlin)
Of Magic and Duty (LoL)
Sometimes, Darius wonders how long Zaun is going to last before some experiment accidentally turns its already heavily polluted atmosphere completely toxic, or maybe simply makes the whole place explode. He just hopes it doesn’t happen while he’s there. That would be a very disappointing way to die.
In Earth’s Cradle (DA2)
Fenris moves through the battle, Fade-stepping to get faster, to dodge attacks and projectiles. One second he’s not-quite-there, and the enemy sword is ripping through air, the next he’s material again, his fist becoming solid inside the soldier’s chest, flesh and bone ripping to make space for him.
He’ll Bite (CA)
Sam’s the one who finds Bucky, or maybe Bucky finds Sam, neither mentioned much about how it happened but now Bucky’s sitting in Sam’s kitchen, hands wrapped around a warm cup of coffee, and Steve doesn’t know what to say.
Sugar and Spice (Angel)
Wolfram & Hart is no more, and Angel Investigations moved back into the Hyperion hotel. Spike tagged along, because really he has no other place to go to, and he did help save the world after all. (“Twice!” he would insist on pointing out.)
It Must Be (BtVS)
“You cannot tell anyone,” Anya hears as she walks past the door to Dawn’s room.
She stops, carefully tiptoes towards said door and presses her ear against the wooden panel. What is Dawn up to this time? With the First after them, they really don’t have time for more of Dawn’s teenage crisis. She thought they were past this.
Sleepless (DA2)
Fenris first notices it after they kill the dragon at the Bone Pit. Well, the new one. Hawke has a claw stuck through her arm, and though she says it’s fine he insists on dragging her to the clinic, even if he has to break the door and shake Anders awake. There is no door-breaking or shaking required, because even though it’s so late some might call it early Anders is up, working, organising the potions on his shelves and listing the things he’ll need to procure soon.
Dearest Laura (TW)
Dearest Laura,
I've been staring at these two words for the last ten minutes, wondering how to start this, but I'm not even sure why I sat down with paper and pen in the first place. Maybe I'm feeling lonely, now that Derek and uncle Peter are gone. Maybe I'm feeling guilty... guilty of so many things, none the least what happened all those years ago.
Cyberwolf (TW)
There are many ways to cheat death if you have the knowledge and the resources, Peter had once said in one of his weird speeches in which he gives you disturbing information you didn’t want, and none of the information you actually need. They were probably discussing the subject of Lydia’s nature, and wondering how Peter had been able to use that to come back from the dead, which still made absolutely zero sense to Stiles. But the words had stuck in his mind, burrowed deep, and started growing into questions and ideas.
Respite (TW)
Derek’s eyes open as he gasps for breath, panicking. For a second, he doesn’t remember where he is. For a second, he can still feel the arms of his nightmare holding him up, can still feel his claws sinking into Boyd’s chest, Boyd’s energy seep out of him and into Derek.
In Wolf Skin (TW)
“No,” Stiles says, pointing a finger at the teenager in front of him. “No no no! You give it back right now!”
New Spark (TW)
Isaac is sitting on Scott’s bed, shuffling through the songs on Scott’s ipod, trying to find one he can actually focus on. There’s no use, he can’t help himself, his ears stay tuned to the sound of Scott and his mom’s conversation downstairs.
Burning Embers (TW)
Peter looks down at Cora’s face, trying to match the features of the teenager in front of him with his memories of the eleven-year-old kid he last saw half-an-hour before the fire. Her presence here makes no sense. She must have been in her bedroom, doing homework, when the house burst into flames.

Firstly, it is sad that I had to go back all the way to 2013 for my last 20 fics. I really need to write more. T_T
As for a pattern, idk, I don’t really see one? Sometimes I drop the reader in the middle of things, sometimes I set up a scene with descriptions, sometimes I go into a character’s head... Do you see a pattern in my fic openings?
My favorite of these is a toss up between In Wolf Skin and Tinsel and Mistletoe, I think, even though they are very very different.
I’m “tagging” anyone who feels like doing this?

Note
Why are the Astros in trouble?
So in 2017 they won their first world series in their franchise history.
In november of 2019, it was found out that they cheated to do so. Stealing signs from opposing teams using a center field camera hooked up to a live feed just outside the dugout (the camera itself is legal, the live feed using it in-game to steal signs, is not.)
They used different methods but the main one was signaling to the batter the type of pitch being thrown by banging on trash cans.
They also emailed scouts to ask them to help them cheat and scouts refused. and then “coincidently” a few weeks later they fired like eight scouts.
so now their manager and GM have a one-year suspension, they’ve lost their first and second round picks in the next two drafts (which there are 40 rounds so that’s kind of whatever), a five million dollar fine (the maximum in MLB), and their Assistant GM got a lifetime ban.
There’s still a hold out on the punishment for Alex Cora who was the bench coach for the 2017 Astros and the Manager of the 2018 Red sox (who won the world series then and a few weeks ago was reported that they also stole signs electronically)
