"Honoring A Plucky Warrior" Folks, there isn't enough room in the other posts for this, so we shall honor this little ship with her own post. The "Cavalcade" began her days as an honest fishing vessel in Tacoma, Washington, in 1940 With War looming, the Navy snatched her up, and she entered the service of her country as a District Patrol Craft, and she became the USS YP-72 on November 28, 1940. Though she be small, boy was she mighty. The little fighter packed a big punch - a 3-inch gun, a pair of .50 caliber Browning machine guns, two .30 caliber Lewis machine guns, two 20mm cannons, AND depth charges! Fate would see her serving in Alaska, which is where she was earmarked to serve for fishing duty in her past life. She was flagship of the Alaska Patrol before hostilities broke out, and spent her service from 1941-43 in Dutch Harbor in the Aleutian Islands (that's 790 miles southwest of Anchorage). She traveled literally to the end of the world - Kuluk Bay, on Adak Island (1186 miles southwest of Anchorage) where tragedy struck - literally. She went hard aground on an uncharted reef on February 17th. After five days of surveys and salvage efforts, the fateful decision had to be made... 80 Years Ago Today, (Tuesday) February 23rd, 1943, the faithful little ship was abandoned as a Total Loss.
