3003. A Classical Kind of Fear

This is "A Classical Kind of Fear." October bops.

Yesterday we waited until very late in the night at the hospital for news. But we settled for nothing. She would have to stay overnight to be monitored. She was sleeping now. They said they would let us know if anything changed.

At home, the house was dark. The power must've gone out because the oven and microwave were blinking.

I tried to take Darby out to pee but he wouldn't budge from his spot under the table. Tried coaxing him with a treat but that wouldn't do it. He seemed apprehensive—scared even.

Did you leave this window open? Karen asked. I looked at the open window and couldn't remember. I don't think so, I said.

The curtains rippled in the crisp night breeze before I forcefully shut the window.

Do you think she's going to be alright? Karen asked later, in bed. (I could tell she wasn't going to sleep.)

Before I answered, I thought back to earlier, in the parking lot of the hospital. A man was walking his (what I assumed) wife to their car. The woman was crying—blubbering even. Uncontrollably. All the man could do was hold her tight as they walked. He looked desperate. Her crying was loud and reverberated in the night. I looked over at Karen, but she didn't seem to notice. She looked as if she were in another world, listening to something else entirely, something I didn't have access to. All I could say was everything would be fine, even though I couldn't even hear the words myself.
