• Battle for the Reichstag
During the Battle of Berlin, Soviet forces assaulted the Reichstag building, the building that was the meeting place of the Bundestag (“Federal Assembly”), the lower house of Germany’s national legislature. The building was left in near total disrepair after the war.
In the early hours of April 29th, during the Battle of Berlin. The Soviet 3rd Shock Army crossed the Moltke bridge and started to fan out into the surrounding streets and buildings. The initial assaults on buildings, including the Ministry of the Interior, were hampered by the lack of supporting artillery. It was not until the damaged bridges were repaired that artillery could be moved up in support. At 04:00 hours, in the Führerbunker, Hitler signed his last will and testament and, shortly afterwards, married Eva Braun. At dawn the Soviets pressed on with their assault in the south-east. After very heavy fighting they managed to capture Gestapo headquarters on Prinz-Albrechtstrasse, but a Waffen-SS counter-attack forced the Soviets to withdraw from the building.
By the next day, April 30th, the Soviets had solved their bridging problems and with artillery support at 06:00 they launched an attack on the Reichstag, but because of German entrenchments and support from 12.8 cm guns 2 km (1.2 mi) away on the roof of the Zoo flak tower, in Berlin Zoo, it was not until that evening that the Soviets were able to properly enter the building. The Reichstag had not been in use since it had burned in February 1933 and its interior resembled a rubble heap more than a government building. The German troops inside made excellent use of this and were heavily entrenched. Fierce room-to-room fighting ensued. Each room had been transformed into a fort. Authentic fortresses defended by German troops desperate to survive. The Red Army suffered high casualties during the assault. At that point there was still a large contingent of German soldiers in the basement. Down there, wounded and nurses struggle in a merciless fight. Later some men were able to launch counter-attacks against the Red Army.
By May 2nd, 1945 the Red Army controlled the building entirely. The famous photo of the two soldiers planting the flag on the roof of the building is a re-enactment photo taken the day after the building was taken. To the Soviets the event as represented by the photo became symbolic of their victory demonstrating that the Battle of Berlin, as well as the Eastern Front hostilities as a whole, ended with the total Soviet victory.

phrase: when home doesn't feel like home anymore
‘On the way back we went down Albrechtstrasse and Clara gave in to the temptation to visit the school she had attended as a child. In one of the classrooms, the very one where she had been taught in the early 1950s, the selfsame schoolmistress was still teaching, almost thirty years later, her voice quite unchanged - still warning the children to keep at their work, as she had done then, and also not to chatter. Alone in the entrance hall, surrounded by closed doors that had seemed at one time like mighty portals, Clara was overcome by tears, as she later told me. At all events, when she came out she was in such a state of distress as I had never seen her in before. We returned to her grandmother’s flat in Ottakring, and neither on the way there nor that entire evening did she regain her composure following this unexpected encounter with her past.’ -- WG Sebald, Vertigo

Viimeinen ilta sujui italialaisen ruoan ja espanjalaisen viinin voimin. Ihan hotellin vierestä löytyi kiva ravintola ja baari. Ja täysikuu.

How do like the scene where Gunther begins to call Heydrich “our dark prince” 😆”Like Castle Dracula, number 8 Prinz Albrechtstrasse contained its own pale-faced prince of darkness, and whenever I approached the neo-baroque entrance I couldn’t help but think that the two naked ladies who adorned the broken segmental pediment were actually a pair of vampire sisters married to Heydrich who wandered the building at night in search of some clothes and a good meal”🤦‍♀️
And what about the part where Heydrich repeated several times that “Gunther HIS MAN HISMAN NOT MARITIN BORMAN’s !!! Remember this Bernie!!... oh i swear to god!” It was hilarious ..😆
Well ‘Prussian Blue’ was a wild ride
A few highlights (spoilers ahead)
Bormann forcing everyone around him to take meth.
Gunther getting high on said meth and not sleeping for two days.
Guther shooting at the clientele of a brothel because he wants to interview these prostitutes in peace, dammit.
Gunther talking himself halfway into a concentration camp before realising he is accusing Hitler’s old army friend of murder and having to backpedal at high speed.
Gunther trying to look inconspicuous in France. His methods include ‘buy a beret’ and ‘just tie a string on onions to your bicycle handlebars.’
Gunther becomes best friends with a cat.
Gunther crossing the line and committing murder because someone shot said cat. (Mind you, I’m right behind him.)
Did…did Kerr write a crack fic by accident? It seemed serious at the time…
