TRILOGIE DE MAURIENNE – JOUR 2

A Albiez-le-Vieux, le 25 juin 2023

    En ce dimanche, les conditions sont identiques à celles de la veille : soleil et chaleur seront au rendez-vous et question chaleur on peut dire qu’on a eux très chaud puisque l’épreuve à un temps eu un refus de dernière minute des autorités pour cause de parcours commun avec celui de la Marmotte entre le col du Glandon et Albiez via la Croix de Fer, St Sorlin et le Col du Mollard. En effet il était prévu que nous devions descendre sur St-Jean-de-Maurienne mais des travaux non terminés nous obligent aussi à passer par le Mollard : bref il est plus facile de taper sur la plus petite course mais après beaucoup de travail de la part de l’organisation, l’épreuve est maintenue à condition de faire l’arrivée au col du Glandon et de finir le parcours librement. Le grand parcours, déjà bien raboté cette année, reste donc de 120km mais seulement 95 km de chronométré avec les Lacets de Montvernier, une petite montée du côté d’Epierre et donc le Col du Glandon véritable juge de paix aujourd’hui !

     Comme la veille, départ d’Albiez-Montrond pour une descente neutralisée sur St-Jean-de-Maurienne : l’allure est plus soutenue aujourd’hui et bien qu’une heure plus tôt on n’a pas froid pour arriver en bas. Le départ réel est donné en sortie de ville sur la route menant à Hermillon ; dans les 10 premiers je reste bien placé et ça roule assez fort jusqu’à Pontamafrey où on s’engage sur la route des Lacets de Montvernier en même temps qu’un regroupement de mobylettes ! Couac ? manque de communication ? toujours est-il que ces derniers ne s’arrêtent pas et c’est tout juste si on a la place de passer, car on monte plus vite qu’eux. C’est un peu la guerre au début, au milieu des gaz d’échappement ou j’aperçois tout juste 2 coureurs se détacher : une fois les mobs derrière je me rassure en voyant Arnaud Féodoroff, Kenty Blanc, Hugo Viort, Paul Emile Lorthioir ou Maxim Pirard : j’ai eu du mal à accrocher ce groupe mais la fin se passe mieux tandis que les 2 hommes de têtes ont filés très vite ! ça ne se relâche pas entre Montvernier et le Châtel où je ferme la marche : pas mieux dans la descente et heureusement une fois en bas Arnaud me file un bon coup de main pour raccrocher les wagons : nous avons plus de 20km de plaine et c’est à une bonne quinzaine que l’on file en direction d’Epierre. Peu de coureurs roulent et certains reviennent même de l’arrière peu avant d’attaquer la 2eme difficulté du jour.

Cette montée en forêt de 3.3km @ 8.3% refait une bonne sélection sous l’impulsion de Maxim : à 5w/kg minimum on va retrouver à l’avant les même que dans les lacets de Montvernier. La route est jonchée de branches, et je me place pour la descente technique qui suit. Derrière Paul-Emile je m’accroche et on doit relancer très fort avec Maxim sur la petite bosse qui suit pour recoller. Malheureusement pour moi la course s’arrête là me rendant compte d’une crevaison lente sur la roue avant : obligé de réparer je peux repartir mais avec 6’ d’arrêt bon nombre de concurrents sont passé et je ne risque plus de revenir !

      Je repars un peu dépité et trouve un bon groupe avec notamment Jean-Noël Jacquemod : on roule bien et je prends de bons relais qui incitent quelques autres à en faire autant. Après 10km de plaine nous voici à St-Etienne-de-Cuines pour les 19,5km à 7.3% du col du Glandon. Tout de suite je me retrouve seul et compte un peu plus d’une heure d’effort : à 320-330W je suis peu être un peu ambitieux mais rejoint quand même le replat de St-Colomban-des Villards avec 315W moyens en ayant déjà repris pas mal de concurrents mais je sens les jambes moins bien qu’hier et cette 1ere partie de course. Du coup je profite de replat pour récupérer et c’est la panne sèche au moment de reprendre la pente dans la forêt : je ne tiens même plus 280/300W dans ces forts pourcentages et ça ne s’arrange pas au fil des km ; plus dans le coup je roule juste pour arriver en haut où il m’aura fallu 1h12 pour rallier le sommet (soit tout juste 280W moyens… une misère). La place est bien anecdotique : 21eme et quand même 1er de la caté comme petite récompense d’avoir été au bout. Après un bon petit ravitaillement il reste à rentrer tranquillement : final du col de la Croix de fer (où la voiture balais de la Marmotte traine dans le coin) puis descente sur St-Sorlin-d’Arves et le barrage de Belleville pour terminer avec le col du Mollard : 6km à 6.5% de ce côté. Bien content du raccourcissement de l’épreuve du coup !

     Pas grand-chose donc à retenir de cette deuxième journée même si après ces 2 jours je reste solide leader du challenge cyclo tour Rotor. Je pense toutefois que la condition était moins bonne que la veille mais c’est difficile de juger quand tu te retrouves seul à finir une épreuve dont tu sais que tu ne pourras plus revenir dans le top 10 ; cela aura tout de même été une bonne journée d’entrainement en montagne !

St JDM day 2

Today was much warmer when we awoke (well 4 degrees warmer). Today we were looking to do a moderate ride as we’re meeting Denis and Babette for a ride tomorrow. That’s easier said than done when you’re in this valley. Everything we looked at had 10-20km of climbing at an average of 7%.

We therefore chose a loop that took us over Col du Mollard. It was a lovely morning of climbing and stunning scenery. The first part was in a forest so nice and cool and then the next bit up to Col du Mollard was more exposed but with great views. I could even see snow on the mountains.

Having hit the top we descended back to Albiez-Montrond (1.5km from the summit) where we had a delicious lunch. Here in the Savoie region the food is all about 101 ways to book with cheese, potatoes and ham or bacon. We had what they referred to as like a savoury molten cake - mashed potato with melted cheese inside and bacon on the outside - what’s not to love about that 😋 We shared this and then both had a dessert, good thing it was all downhill from there 😜

A beautiful descent with very little traffic. Jose has done a great job of selecting routes that avoid busy roads. I forgot in yesterday’s post to say I had seen two deer on the road on our descent. Unfortunately I wasn’t able get a photo but it was a really nice moment.

Back at the campground it was time for a post ride rose, a shower and some clothes washing. Late afternoon we went for our walk. I frankly wasn’t keen tonight (somewhat weary) but Jose got me going and off we went to the atm and for our ritual Ricard.

It is so much warmer today. It’s after 9:30pm and I have only just put on a light sweater sitting outside. So nibbles and dinner outside tonight.

No' awa' tae bide awa'

The weather, by common consent, has been amazing; though we didn't dare say so until we saw blue sky on the morning of our third and final day. The forecast was for thundery showers and sunny intervals. The showers obligingly happened overnight, and the days have been perfect for cycling.

For me, today was a mix of the familiar and the new. I've been to the top of the Col du Mollard, but ascended and descended by the other two of the three routes to it. I remembered the high Alpine meadows between Albiez-Montrond and Le Mollard, beautifully held in a bowl of mountains, above the press and rush of the valley below (which contains the motorway and railway line to Turin, as well as quarries, factories and the towns supporting all the villages above).

I was riding with Dr Colin, who only a month ago had come down the road we went up, when he was riding La Marmotte (a big sportive). He swears he remembers none of it, which is what riding on the rivet (of the saddle, i.e. really hard) with several thousand others will do for your cognitive function.

We went down from the Col du Mollard by the route I went up it a year ago, and then up the Col de la Croix de Fer by the way I came down it last year. The 7 km final section up from Saint-Sorlin-d'Arves to the col is pretty brutal, so I developed an interest in landscape photography, to give me the odd break.

Four out of the seven of us took the shorter option today, omitting the Col du Mollard, so they were at the Col de la Croix de Fer before us Challenge riders; and I was the last of those to arrive at the col. There had been talk over dinner last night of lunch at the restaurant at the col, reputed for its omelettes; but the place was thronged, so I opted for an ice-cream, and left. Tim and Sarah, from the Classic group, were also departing; but I left them behind quite quickly, and didn't see anyone else from our group for the rest of the day.

So used was I to going the other way up (or down) roads I went down (or up) last year, I almost went all the way down from the Col de la Croix de Fer to Le Bourg D'Oisans, which would have been a pretty spectacular navigation fail, but my Garmin squawked at me as I shot past the turn for the Col du Glandon. At that point, you're at the col itself, so today's route was the descent, on a road I've never ridden, in either direction. It is 20 km of the most beautiful, and satisfyingly technical, riding, with views of Mont Blanc from near the top. I've put the climb on my list of things to be fit enough to do.

The Challenge route home included a return visit to Les Lacets de Montvernier, this time just as far as Montvernier itself, then along the side of the valley before descending to St-Jean-de-Maurienne. I was pushing along to hold open the option of adding La Toussuire (the 'Day 0' climb) to the end of the day, but by the last of the day's many hairpins, my concentration was going. Remembering the patron saint of cyclists, Notre Dame de Toute Prudence (to whom is dedicated the chapel at the Col de l'Iseran), I opted to leave La Toussuire as another reason to return.

I was first back at the hotel, by quite a margin today. Ben seems to have stayed for an omelette, so even though he flew down the Glandon and beat his own personal best on the Lacets, my margin in the final classement générale was a stonking 48'14" for the day, and 53'37" overall; with bonus points for prudence. So I get the yellow jersey; Ben gets the Polka Dots for his outstanding climbing and descending; and Angus -- who is only 21 -- gets the White Jersey for best young rider. The final jersey is renamed from Green to Evergreen, and goes to not to a sprinter but to Colin l'âiné for his inspiring 68-year-old diesel engine.

TRILOGIE DE MAURIENNE – JOUR 1

    Gros chamboulement cette année sur la Trilogie de Maurienne à cause du changement de date de la Marmotte qui, en avançant son édition, se déroule sur le même week-end. Du coup la Trilogie passe sur seulement 2 jours et on le verra sur le prochain article, le 2eme jour a eu très chaud avec une sérieuse menace d’annulation pure et simple ! Mais revenons à cette 1ere journée qui comporte 2 étapes chronométrées : la montée de la Toussuire et celle d’Albiez par le col de la Confrérie, le tout sous une météo estivale.

    Une bonne centaine de participants se retrouvent au village historique de l’Opinel : Albiez-le-Vieux. Sur place je reconnais bon nombre d’adversaires de qualité tel Hugo Viort, Louison Faure, Kenty Blanc, Arnaud Feodoroff, Paul-Emile Lorthioir, Maxim Pirard, Benjamin Mestre pour ne citer qu’eux. Si la forme semble bien revenue depuis la Megève Mont Blanc, je reste dans l’inconnu par rapport au traitement que j’ai dû suivre (et suis encore pour 4 jours) suite à une méchante infection ; douleurs musculaires et crampes sont annoncées comme principaux effets secondaires sans oublier un risque de tendinites accru ! L’objectif du jour sera donc de voir comment ça se passe sur des efforts prolongés à hautes intensités tout en essayant de garder une petite marge de sécurité en vu du lendemain.

      A 9h le peloton s’élance de manière neutralisée derrière l’auto jusqu’à St Jean de Maurienne ; il fait un peu frais, et l’allure plus que réduite permet un bon petit refroidissement ! Arrivé au rond-point de l’Opinel, le départ de la 1ere montée est donné et ça démarre très fort. Déjà 4-5 hommes se détachent et j’hésite à partir à bloc ; finalement 2’ autour des 400W me permettent de rester dans le coup et un petit regroupement s’opère ; on progresse sur un bon tempo souvent dicté par Arnaud avec encore une ou deux accélérations réduisant le groupe. A Fontcouverte on doit être une dizaine et le rythme devient plus régulier au moment de prendre la route directe par la Rochette, évitant Villarembert et le Corbier. Toujours pas d’attaques avec Hugo, Louison et Arnaud qui mènent l’allure tandis que je me contente de rester dans les roues. Le final approche et c’est Arnaud qui lance de très loin avant même de tourner à droite dans la Station de la Toussuire ; je tente d’y aller mais avec un peu d’appréhension du coup je perds quelques longueurs sur Hugo et Louison. Paul-Emile me relaie mais on ne rentrera pas échouant à quelques mètres. Louison gagne le sprint devant Arnaud et Hugo ; 4 et 5 pour Paul-Emile et moi.

Après un petit ravitaillement bienvenu on redescend sur St-Jean … avec le capteur de puissance qui décide de faire grève ! Du coup je laisse un peu les autres partir et m’arrête en bas (prévoyant éventuellement un crochet par l’appart), mais la connexion refonctionne et je file donc en direction de Villargondran où tout le monde semble m’attendre ! C’est donc raté pour tenter de grapiller du temps en partant un peu derrière et on repart sur un bon tempo autour des 5w/kg dicté par Arnaud. Me sentant mieux et un peu rassuré après la 1ere montée, je décide de vraiment durcir l’allure à mi pente : seul Louison et Hugo parviennent à me suivre puis Paul-Emile : au détour des lacets (52 durant cette montée !) je vois que le groupe à explosé avec juste un trio dont Arnaud et Maxim tout près. Je poursuis mon effort jusqu’au col de la Confrérie sans l’aide de personne ; Arnaud qui a bien limité l’écart rentre rapidement sur le replat et nous voilà 5 pour ces derniers km alternant replats et « coups de cul ». Arnaud mène un gros rythme sur un passage où j’avais prévu d’attaquer puis comme tout à l’heure il attaque de très loin mais cette fois je parviens à suivre et tente même le contre à 400/500m de la ligne… qui ne surprend personne : on passe sur la ligne roues dans roues avec Louison devant Arnaud et Hugo, Paul-Emile 4 et moi 5 de nouveau.

    2 étapes et 2 tops 5 identiques il en va donc de même sur le classement général des 2 grimpées ! Plutôt agréablement surpris d’arriver 2 fois pour la gagne (surtout la 2eme) je me rassure sur mes sensations notamment par rapport à mon traitement puisque je n’ai pas ressenti de douleurs suspectes qui m’auraient obligées à lever le pied voir arrêter. 5eme et 1er de catégorie donc sur ce 1er jour, il reste à bien récupérer et revenir en bonne forme pour le lendemain avec le col du Glandon en juge de paix.

Airbug by T. Kerscher, J. Albiez, K. Berns (2000), Forschungszentrun Informatilc at the University of Karlsruhe (FZI), Germany. Pneumatic muscles have advantages such as a good performance to weight ratio, and passive compliance to the terrain. The Airbug uses Festo fluidic muscles that contract under compressed air at 6 bar. The pressure inside the air muscles is monitored to maintain closed-loop control of joint pressure, which combined with information from joint encoders, allows the joint angles to be correctly set. As fluidic muscles are pull-only, they have to be used in pairs, with both protagonistic, and antagonistic actuators. Each leg has three degrees of freedom, but eight fluidic muscles are needed per leg as the main load bearing joint at the hip requires four muscles.
