I just watched the 2004 Thunderbirds film, and I have so many thoughts...
Spoilers below the cut
Clearly, they felt like they had too many characters to work with, which makes sense, the cast is pretty large especially for a 90 minute film, but did they really need Jeff, Scott, John, Virgil, and Gordon to be stranded in space for the entire film???
I know lots of people don't like the whole teen Alan thing, which is fair enough. I don't mind it (probably because TAG was the 1st piece of Thunderbirds media I watched), but it's still not my fave, I just don't dislike it as much as I think other people do (I just feel like they could do more interesting things with that dynamic than they did in the film)
They refer to themselves as The Thunderbirds???? not as International Rescue??? like International Rescue is written on the side of Thunderbird 2, but I don't think they ever directly say that they are International Rescue. This makes the badges that Alan, Tintin, and Fermat are given at the end kinda weird if you don't have the context of watching the original series?
The random comedic sound effects they use caught me off guard lol
I don't like the costumes, they're just a bit boring in my eyes
The Hood is the Mandarin guy from Iron Man??? Tintin is the girl from high school musical??? I love that tbh
I love Lady Penelope, but why does she get a costume change before the final confrontation??? One moment, she's in Thunderbird 1 with her usual hair, and then she goes into the bank, and suddenly she's put her hair into this super fancy updo? why???
That being said, I do love all the pink that Lady Penelope uses! Absolute Queen!!
I like Tintin she's cool, I just wish she was less of a love interest (or if they wanted her to be a love interest they should've built up her and Alan's dynamic more). However, I do kinda like how she also has the Hood's powers, I think that's interesting
What was going on with Brains and The Hoods female sidekick???? like did we really need that subplot??? It didn't even serve any purpose???
Lady Penelope's mansion is Cliveden House!!! (I doubt anyone else knows what I'm talking about, but basically, it's a National Trust property just outside London. I used to go on visits there all the time when I was a kid, so when it showed up on screen I was like I know that place!!!)
All the fight/action scenes are all so bad in the best way possible
I feel like the whole secrecy thing isn't spoken about enough (if at all), and so when the Hood is like "so the leader of the Thunderbirds is astronaut, billionaire Jeff Tracy, I should've guessed" it is a bit weird because you assumed the Hood already knew that
I do like that the Hood was someone that Jeff had failed to save before, I thought that was interesting
Jeff was also cool, I liked his character
I feel like I don't have much to say about Alan or Fermat tbh they were fine
I loved Parker
I hate the design of FAB 1 ( I think they were trying to make it look more futuristic, but I don't think it worked)
I liked the title sequence. That was cool
All of that said, I absolutely loved this film!!! I knew that it was going to be bad before I watched it and I think that allowed me to enjoy it. It's so bad but in the best possible way, so I had a lot of fun watching it, regardless of the quality.
#I feel like making a thunderbirds film is just too ambitious#like there's so many characters and so much stuff that it's difficult to fit it all in 90 minutes#thunderbirds 2004#thunderbirds
