Dandelion News - February 15-21
Like these weekly compilations? Tip me at $kaybarr1735 or check out my Dandelion Doodles!
1. Solar farms managed for nature boost bird abundance and diversity, new study finds
“There were more than twice as many farmland birds in the well-managed solar farms compared with the intensively farmed land, and nearly 16 times as many woodland birds. […] Overall, diversity was 2.5 times higher, while woodland birds were nine times more diverse.”
2. Washington judge blocks Trump’s gender-affirming care ban, says it's unconstitutional in multiple ways
“This marks the second time in a week that a judge has stood in the way of Trump’s attacks on trans kids. [… The ruling grants] a temporary restraining order that halts enforcement of provisions in Trump’s directive that would cut off federal funding to medical institutions that provide gender-affirming care to minors.”
3. Fog harvesting could provide water for arid cities
“17,000 sq m of mesh could produce enough water to meet the weekly water demand of [… the] urban slums. 110 sq m could meet the annual demand for the irrigation of the city's green spaces. Fog water could be used for soil-free (hydroponic) agriculture, with yields of 33 to 44lb (15 to 20kg) of green vegetables in a month.”
4. Audubon Applauds Bipartisan Federal Effort to Protect Delaware River Basin with Critical Reauthorization Bill
“The bill would […] ensure long-term conservation and restoration efforts, expand the official definition of the basin to include Maryland, and prioritize projects that serve small, rural, and disadvantaged communities. […] The watershed provides important year-round habitats and critical migratory stopovers for approximately 400 bird species[….]”
5. mRNA vaccines show promise in pancreatic cancer in early trial
“Half of the people in the study — eight of the participants — responded to the vaccine, producing T cells that targeted their tumors. […] Just two of the patients who had a response to the vaccine had their cancer return during the three-year follow- up, compared to seven of the eight who did not respond to the vaccine treatments.”
6. Minn. Lt. Gov. Flanagan Makes It Official; She's running for U.S. Senate
“[Flanagan has] “championed kitchen-table issues like raising the minimum wage, paid family and medical leave, and free school meals.” If elected, Flanagan, a tribal citizen of the White Earth Nation, would become the first Native American female U.S. senator in history.”
7. Federal Funding Restored for Low-Income Alabama Utility Assistance After Outcry

“A program meant to help low-income Alabamians pay their utility bills has resumed two weeks after it was canceled due to an executive order from President Donald Trump. […] “We can confirm the funds are reaching those affected by the previous pause[….]””
8. Modeling study suggests Amazon rainforest is more resilient than assumed
“[Previous] studies were either conducted with global climate models that used a simplified representation of convection [or were on a regional scale….] According to the computations, mean annual precipitation in the Amazon does not change significantly even after complete deforestation.“
9. States are moving forward with Buy Clean policies despite Trump reversal
““Buy Clean is a great example of how states and other nonfederal actors can continue to press forward on climate action, regardless of what the federal government does,” said Casey Katims, executive director of the U.S. Climate Alliance, a bipartisan coalition of two dozen governors.”
10. The rewilded golf courses teeming with life
“A wildflower meadow, ponds, scrub habitat, coastline and even an area of peat bog can be found on this little 60-acre (24-hectare) plot, which boasts roe deer, otters, lizards, eels and a huge array of insects and birds.”

"I saw the yellow comes out and there's a lady lying on the side, I'm like, 'You're kidding me, who let her down? There's a yellow for that lady.' That would have been funny if it came in someone's cockpit, 'There's a lady attacking me!'... I knew exactly what it was. It was a lady hanging there. They're going to have to seriously get some good cables." Then Power asked if anyone ran over it, to which it was confirmed to him that Ghiotto smashed the doll’s right hand. "Should go in a glass case, preserve the body. Mummify it!"

Some of my top genres are apparently Alabama metacore, Australian post hardcore, and Japanese punk rock?
Like… okay so what, Erra, Amity and/or Polaris, and… Crossfaith?
#she speaks#can we stop trying to subcategory all the subgenres into regional subgenres please?#like unless it’s British Invasion or Florida death metal then it doesn’t exist#or any other unique style that came from a specific region#like Swedish melodic death metal and Finnish symphonic power metal#those are real because there’s a specific sound to them#but like Vildhjarta are Swedish but they’re not Swedish metalcore. they’re just metalcore#there’s no such thing as Alabama metalcore it’s just metalcore#there is no unique Alabama metalcore scene#Erra is no more Alabama metalcore than crown the empire is Texas metalcore#because that doesn’t exist it’s just metalcore#jfc

One of my arc predictions for TPOT 9, I guess
(1st pic and last tag on the post unrelated lmao)

WARNING: RELATED TO TPOT 9 VOTING RESULT SPOILERS ON THE READ MORE BLOCK.
Bittersweet Reunion.

This arc involves Golf Ball having fear of abandonment. As she loses Puffball, Tennis Ball tries to convince her to snap out of it. However, it'll take time for Golf Ball to get used to it as she's already had a strong bond with her former nemesis in BFDIA somewhere at TPOT 7.

Thinking about a space au, similar to my the void is like a massive ocean au
There's these sailors who are trying to sail the void and it's fucking hard, there's a lot of things that want to kill you out there, the void itself included with the drastic temperature drops and harrowing conditions
But there's some places in the void where distance bends, short cuts of sorts
They've been trying to find one of those short cuts to the main void from their port feeding into it
Shit sucks still
With growing pressure from their employers/sponsors they decide to try and find a short cut that has claimed pretty much every other ship that has tried to sail
Failure isn't an option, they either find the short cut or they die trying
It's a somber day, a few of the hermits are trying to keep moral high and themselves distracted from the inevitable
Xisuma feels guilty about this, about sailing with the hermits to their deaths but he feels like his hands are tied, but if it comes to it, he'll always choose the lives of his hermits over his own
This is going to suck so bad
#was listening to the northwest passage while writing this#got to go on the USS Alabama a few weeks ago and im still thinking about her#very pretty ship very powerful#mouse muses#xisuma

🏳️🌈🏳️⚧️ GOOD queer news for the TL: a bunch of students across the U.S. are using grants to make their schools more welcoming for LGBTQ+ youth

Queer students deserve to feel safe at school! We're in our third year of giving grants to put the power in their hands to make their schools more welcoming - students know what they need most in their own communities and their own schools.
Through 50 States, 50 Grants, 5,000 Voices, we've awarded over $1.5 million in grants across the U.S. to support student-led projects. Our third season has some of the most badass projects yet, like these:
❤️ “With this grant, we’ll establish an LGBTQIA+ community space in the library, open to all students, with guest speakers, arts and crafts, LGBTQIA+ books and literature, and LGBTQIA+-specific resources.” - Pocatello, Idaho
🧡 “Our project aims to support LGBTQ+ students through teacher training, development of gender-neutral bathroom protocols, and the organization of a district-wide Queer Prom.” - Gypsum, Colorado
💛 “We’ll take students from the 3 middle schools and our local high school to Honolulu Pride to make local LGBTQ+ friends, feel accepted in a large group, and see the community beyond just school.” - Ewa Beach, Hawai'i
💚 “We’re going to increase access to queer literature by working with a local nonprofit to expand our school’s collection, host storytelling events, and foster community connection." - Mobile, Alabama
💙 “Our plan is to create new Inclusivity Zones across the state in critical areas for local GSA clubs to meet, plan shared events, and be their own safe space.” - Charleston, West Virginia
💜 “We’ll host the Rainbow Youth Summit for LGBTQIA+ youth from across southern California to network, learn, and have fun in a safe, judgement free and supportive environment.” - Cathedral City, California
These students are truly the definition of making things better - you can see the rest of the amazing projects lined up across the country on our blog here!
