GNX Album Review
Edit: please give it a chance, even if itās super long
Iā¦ I donā¦ donāt know what to sayā¦ the announcement of this album was shocking enough. But releasing it literally 5 minutes after, is absolutely crazy! This album reminds of when Frank Ocean released Blonde without the studio ever knowing it or Frankās intentions. And that changed or even broke the music industry forever. For better or worse. Now, I feel like this new Kendrick album is going to do something similar, but not just to do with the music industry, but hip-hop as a whole. As hip-hop hadnāt been the same for a while. Letās take a look at this album.
1. wacced out murals
Not his best opener but if THIS isnāt his best opener, then we know that this album is gonna be fire! From the Spanish singer at the very start, to the simple sounding yet hard beat, to the (as usual) amazing lyrical content from Kendrick to how he raps on this song. And the Lil Wayne and Snoop Dogg mentions were unexpected. But one mention was taken in a more friendly term than the other. So yeah, I loved this opener a lot and so do I with the rest of these songs. 10/10.
2. squabble up
FINALLY! A snippet that actually made it into a full song, let alone onto this album. Itās so fun and ridiculously entertaining. Such a Party anthem for the west coast. Itās Not Like Us, but for the West Coast. And I love that. 10/10.
3. luther (feat. sza)
Holy shit! What the fu-? Kendrick singing was not on my 2024 bingo card. But I shouldāve. Because itās actually really good. More than good. Itās unlike anything Kendrick has ever done before. PGLang has really given Kendrick way more freedom and control over his work. Not that TDE was bad or anything. Kendrickās whole discography before the Drake beef was made at TDE. But it was people within the music industry that Kendrick didnāt like. But Iāll explain more later in this review. Anyway, SZA was perfect for this and another one on this album. 10/10.
4. man at the garden
He deserves it all. No really. He does tho. He has one of the greatest discographies of all time. But just because he is the greatest rapper of all time, but what heās done for hip-hop as a whole this past year is something that hasnāt been done in a long time. Kendrick has also worked his way to the top. Itās like heās planned how he was going to climb the ladder and the charts. Drake has lost over and over this year and decided to sue (aka, the cowardās way out). And these delusional fans of drakeās think drake is the best rapper ever. Commercially, yes. But talent-wise, he doesnāt deserve it all. Drakeās a coward, a creep, delusional, certified boy lover and a talentless hack who thought he could win against fucking Kendrick āLamarā Duckworth. Anywayā¦ 10/10.
5. hey now (feat. dody6)
At first, I didnāt really think much of the song, but now. I think itās a really great song and it slaps so hard. dody6 was such an unexpected feature and only adds to the album even more and what this album is trying to convey and accomplish. 9/10.
6. reincarnated
The Tupac sample?!??!! 4 and a half minutes of one of the best rap songs of the year. I donāt know how to describe my feelings for this songā¦ the lyrics were top notch, the sample is absolutely incredible, the rapping is perfect and the message is telling the black community to take those who created a road and build upon the artistic greatness of those before. This tops everything else earlier on this album. But it doesnāt stop. 11/10.
7. tv off (feat. lefty gunplay)
Not Like Us 2.0, but in the best way possible. Thereās actually nothing much to say except that itās one of the best from the album. So yeahā¦ 10/10. MUSTAAAARD!!!!!!!
8. dodger blue (feat. wallie the sensei, siete7x, roddy ricch)
The best is so incredibly interesting and I wish there was more. Also, the features were the absolute highlight of this song. This is making me feel like Iām in love or something š
. The Only low is the runtime is too short. 9/10.
9. peekaboo (feat. azchike)
This is a good song and I think the goofy and ridiculousness of it all is fun. With that said, I wouldnāt really go back to this song by itself anytime soon. Tho I do love the lyric āBing-bap-boom-boom-boom-bap-bam, The type of shit Iām on, you wouldnāt understandā, itās soooooo good. 7.5/10.
10. heart pt. 6
How the fuck do we go from peekaboo to this?!?! No joke. This song is easily Top 20 favourite Kendrick Lamar songs ever. Iām in love with this masterpiece of a song. And itās a storytelling song, so yeahā¦ when Kendrick is retelling or telling a story in one whole song, that will be my automatic favourite. Take DUCKWORTH. That song is the best song from DAMN. Not only do we get the most beautiful chorus from Kendrick to ever grace this earth, but his verses are also beautiful in the sense of reflecting on memories that stuck with you forever. Whether it was for better or worse. This is in my top 20 favourite K-Dot songs and I donāt care if itās too early to for sure tell. I love this song so much that itās on the same level of beautiful and amazing as the previous Heart song. Fuck Drake and his stupid fucking delusional ass fans, this album fucking rules and I donāt give a shit if Drake has had better opening week sales. This is a 12/10 song. 12/10.
11. gnx (feat. hitta j3, youngthreat, peysoh)
Nowā¦ this aināt the worst song off the album. Kendrick does do some weird adlips Iāll admit, but itās not Kendrickās time to shine on this song. Itās the features and they get to work their West Coast charm so well. But being after heart pt. 6, it had the almost impossible task of trying to keep up with that song. But I still love this song. 8.5/10.
12. gloria (feat. sza)
Two Sza features on one Kendrick album?!?! This is a very beautiful song but not heart pt. 6 beautiful tho. But still beautiful in its own way. Sza is also amazing in this as well as she was on luther. At first, I was confused by this song being the last song to end an album that was absolutely amazing. But after some time, this is a great song to end this album that people think is half of what Kendrick has up his sleeve. And I believe that. So yeahā¦ love this song. A beautiful closing track to an amazing album. 9.5/10.
Overall: I love this album a lot and I love the west coast stuff this album presents so well. But this album reveals the whole point of the drake beef and why Kendrick hated him so much. Itās because Drake is an industry suck up and makes music that sells well but is actually boring. I tried listening to one drakeās songs and I was bored the second I heard him speak. Anyway, Kendrick hates Drake because Drake is an industry suck up, but Kendrick hates the industry even more. Hence why he left TDE. Because it was connected to the industry. If you know why the industry is terrible, then I donāt need to tell youās. So yeahā¦ I love the album and I hope Kendrick wins the lawsuit Drake placed against Kendrick. Fuck Drake, love Kendrick. 10/10.
