only downside to starting T is that i’m quickly running out of time to learn how to sing and then perform aka m80 the wolf by portugal the man. unless i wanna be unfaithful to the original register but that would be blasphemy

On This Day (3/4): Portugal. The Man, Port O’Brien
Tumblr media
03/04/2010; Warehouse Live, Houston, TX
2010 was a great time in my life. I had finally quit a warehouse job I hated and it was basically the only time I had the ability to live off of my parents and do whatever I felt like while unemployed. I didn't work for the majority of the year and I just kept going to shows all the time. I really wish I had savored that time more, but you never know you're living in the good times until you can look at them in hindsight.
Portugal. The Man was a favorite of mine at the time (before they sold out!) and I had been dying to see them live. I don't remember much at all about Port O'Brien, the opener, but I did have an interesting experience while waiting for Portugal to play. I went to the bathroom and I ended up having to wait in line. This guy was in front of me and I just couldn't help mentally making fun of him the entire time. Here's a guy a few inches shorter than me, skinny jeans hiked halfway up to his chest, cuffs rolled up revealing bare ankles and boat shoes, a beanie on top of his head, and the thickest, most awful hipster mustache you've ever seen. Oh yeah, and thick rimmed glasses. Just the definition of a 2010 hipster doofus. I couldn't believe how stereotypical the guy was. Well, he ended up pissing, and I took my turn after him, and then wouldn't you know it an hour later he was on stage singing in front of me. Yep, it was John Gourley himself.
The show was fantastic. They were still largely in their Satanic Satanist mode, with some solid jamming around old school songs like “AKA M80 the Wolf.” I really couldn't have asked for a more perfect set.
After the show, I happened to meet the band and I got them to sign my copy of their The Devil & the Pines 7”. Super nice guys, and they made sure to round up each member of the band to sign it for me, even though I'm sure they were busy with load out.
So now that they have sold out and are one of the biggest rock acts in America, it would be nice to still have that memento. Unfortunately, I sold my 7” collection years ago, and I unwittingly had that one in the bunch. I never even noticed until much later that I had accidentally grabbed it with the rest of them. You can imagine how much I'm kicking myself for that mistake now.

Portugal the Man Woodstock Album Review
Portugal the Man is a band my friend introduced me to during my Sophomore year of high school. The first song I ever heard by them was AKA M80 the Wolf. At first I did not like their music because I found their lyrics to be weird and the lead singer’s voice to be too high pitched for my liking. However, I realized I was listening to their old music (at the time they had about 9 albums out). So I decided to listen to their most recent album at the time called Evil Friends. I immediately liked the songs on the album. The array of instruments as well as catchy choruses on the songs such as Purple Yellow Red and Blue, Modern Jesus and Atomic Man, instantly become my favorites. About two and a half years passed by and I tried to see them in concert, but I ended up missing them each time they came to DC.  Eventually in April of 2017 they released a new song called Feel it Still. The song was immediately addicting to listen to. It was ideal for car rides and working out. Since this was the debut single I was excited to hear the rest of the album. Three months later the rest of the album was released. When I found the time I listened to the whole thing from start to finish. What I found interesting is that there were two extremes with this album; I either loved a song or hated it. The first song Number One was incredibly slow and boring. I did not like the next song, Easy Tiger either. The instruments seemed too loud compared to the lead singer’s voice.  The next song Live in the Moment was one of my favorites, the chorus was super catchy and the guitar and drums worked together perfectly. So far out of the 10 songs on the album I liked 6 of the songs. For that reason I will give this album a 7/10 because even though I liked only 6 of the songs, the album was very concise and had the same sound from start to finish and gave me the fresh new sound I was looking for. I would definitely recommend this album to people who like Alternative and Rock Music.

AKA M80 The Wolf by Portugal. The Man from Waiter: “You Vultures!” (2006)
Through crooked teeth and mouthed up ties, They spit you up river just like all those lions That walked the banks.
They said, "Paint me that river, And would you only use blues? With a brilliant big black mouth and Lengths of pines that route the river through, Through and through."
Fashion, fashion ballrooms of the leaves. We’d like to watch the ghosts dance. We’d like to watch the ghosts dance.
They said, "Paint me that arm That lies directly over mountains, Where the glaciers climb so tall. One absent of the scars, passing boats and ships and oars Tend to leave, the veins will be the tributaries, With all the sounds of the ocean, the ocean."
Fashion, fashion ballrooms of the leaves. We’d like to watch the ghosts dance.
I am but a man. But a proud, proud man.
Silver bells that line the way, Through baited trails, We’ll find you there.
I am but a man. But a proud, proud man.

I am but a man. But a proud, proud man. I remember being obsessed with this album back when it first came out. Wow! Censored Colors is still my favorite though.
