Her Prophet Speaks: Transhumanist Matriarchy

~I was watching this gorgeous video of our Sun and being who I am and doing what I do, my aesthetic thoughts were secondary to my...well, let's call them my Pragmatic Thoughts. For all its undeniable beauty, as I watched gossamer tendrils of 'star light' dance off the Sun's radiant body, I was all too aware that if one of them glanced against our Pale Blue Dot for even a few seconds, most if not all life would be instantly seared from its surface. Maybe that was foremost in my mind because I was two hundred or so pages into Neal Stephenson's SEVENEVES at the time. [Spoiler: The Moon blows up] But I likely would have thought the above anyway. I am usual aware of how fragile life is here on the Pale Blue Dot and of how deadly and violent the Universe truly is and because of that reality, it is crucial that we as a species get a substantial number of ourselves Off Planet ASAP if we wish to survive. From that point of view Deep Green politics are Pure Suicide in that they reject the entire idea of Technological Civilization. And I would say to those ecologically minded folks who say we have to 'clean up the Earth first', “It is a highly dangerous assumption to think we have time to wait for that.” Besides, going Off Planet is an essential part of 'cleaning up Earth'. The primary caveat to all of this is that it has been shown that we Baseline Humans do not do very well in Space. In zero gravity we lose bone and muscle mass and 'bad things' happen our internal organs. And we know that the raw radiation of Space is harmful as well. We just do not yet know how harmful it will be over the long term. I use the term Baseline Humans because we are now at a place were we can actively modify ourselves. But we Homo Sapiens Sapiens are only 'baseline' because of that scientific 'baseline'. Homo Sapiens Idaltu [our now extinct direct ancestors], Homo Neanderthalensis and Denisova Hominins were just as 'human' we are. And there may well have been a few subspecies before them who were also 'just as human'. But they are gone and we are here. ...which brings us to Transhumanism. First we need to redefine one term... Cyborg: this word has been misused by The Terminator franchise. 'Terminators' are NOT Cyborgs, they are Androids, aka Humanoid Robots. It's something of a pet peev of mine. A real Cyborg [Cybernetic Organism] is a human who has been augmented with Cybernetic elements. They walk among us already. Someone with a pace-maker and/or Cochlear implants is technically already a Cyborg, albeit more with a small 'c'. When we talk about brain controlled artificial limbs - something that is also already happening - then one is moving into capital 'C' Cyborg territory. The Transhumanist Cyborg will be a far more extensively modified human. This would include an on-board computer to monitor and maintain all the systems said human contains. It would probably be about the size of a credit card and be placed just under the skin. Ultimately these systems would include, though not be limited to; ~a carbon fiber reinforced bone structure to maximize strength and protect from impacts, ~cerebral implants [Neural Nanonics] to maximize cognition and perception, download information directly and communicate via 'cyber-telepathy', ~micro-electronic contact lenses that allow the eyes to see the entire light spectrum and which contain both macro and micro focusing elements, information screens and measuring elements, ~a subcutaneous microfiber mesh to prevent puncture woulds, maintain level body temperature in extreme environments and promote rapid healing, ~millions of nanobots, microscopic robots that permeate all of the body's tissues and fluids and constantly monitor and repair all tissues and organs using a regular infusing of raw stem cells. For certain situations, limbs could be replaced by fully mechanical prosthesis, but those would be special cases, such as loss of a limb, but eventually organic limbs could be regrown. In other special cases, various organs, such as eyes and lungs, could be replaced by fully mechanical prosthesis in order to operate in highly extreme environments, with the possibility of having them replaced with organics [wetware] when the individual returns to a human friendly locale. Obviously, that crosses over into Genetic Engineering, which is in some ways the 'other half' of Transhumanist development and, in my view, the more important one. Cybernetics are really just “Enhancements” of the Baseline Human form. Genetics are how we begin to move beyond the fundamentals of Baseline Humanity. This is where people start getting frightened because we will in fact be designing and breeding the species that is going to replace us. That brings up all manner of existential terror, visions of remorseless Supermen on a crusade to exterminate the Baseline Humans. But the truth is they are our descendants, our Children...and do we not always want our Children to do better than us, to BE better than us? The human genome has been fully mapped, though there is much we do not yet understand. But we are learning more everyday, even in the face of the above terrified opposition. Though many Baselines scream, “We cannot play God!” that is what we have always done. It is hardwired into out basic nature. [I will address the Metaphysics of this later] One of the things we have learned is how mutable our DNA actually is. It seems that powerful events in early childhood can cause chemical and hormonal surges that can quite literally change the structure of our DNA, changes that we can pass on to our children. Most of that work has focused on trauma for obvious reasons; it is the easiest to track. But it is also highly probably that an intensely positive childhood can do the same. However, this process can also be effected by direct manipulation of our DNA, removing negative inhibiting traits, disease causing genes and adding/augmenting genetic inclinations. Raise such Enhanced children in a positive and supportive environment – we require both Nature and Nurture – and the possibilities are endless. Genetic Engineering can be used to increase muscle and bone density to create greater strength and endurance, to improve organ function...including brain function, to retard and reverse aging – one day even prevent it all together once a certain state of being has been achieved – to strengthen the entire human organism across the board so that we can survive and prosper in almost any environment. On a less esoteric level, we need to do this. The Race needs to become spacefaring because the surface of a planet is a dangerous place to live and all the evidence shows that Baseline Humans do not do well in space. So this is a matter of the long term Survival of the Race. As one looks deeper into the Transhumanist Community, you will find that it is largely dominated by Western Middle Class White Beta Males, a significant number of them twenty/thirty-somethings who are Atheist, Libertarian, personally awkward and who cannot wait to upload their minds into a box to escape that awkwardness. I have no time for them as they are an evolutionary dead end. Mind uploading should be a Final Option, not a primary one. In parallel with this is the most profound contradiction of their Transhumanism; that for a group that is almost uniformly Atheist, it has a near fanatic desire to create itself a God in the form of an AI, which will then 'transform Earth into a Deathless Paradise'. Maybe this accounts for the community's distinct aversion to Metaphysical study, for such would quickly lay bare its clearly Judeo-Christian underpinnings. For a whole set of reasons, both practical/mundane and esoteric/Metaphysical, I am firmly convinced that the Future of The Race lays with Enhanced Females, in effect Cyborg Amazons. Their enhancements would allow them to reproduce with each other – which would produce only daughters – and so leave Baseline Males, and all of their inherent instability, far behind. And said enhancements would also make carrying a child to term and childbirth itself a far easier and safer process that it is naturally. Some advocate that we totally transfer human reproduction to entirely artificial means, e.g. Uterine Replicators. But that is heading in the same direction as Mind Uploading and is the path to becoming non-humans instead of Superior Humans. With the pain and difficulty of bearing children removed, what is left is the Primal Bond and that is what will keep us Human no matter how advanced we become. Those are the basic tenets of Transhumanism I see them. There are however many other aspects, a whole world remodeled to support these Superior Humans, what we presently call The Internet of Things, all the myriad machinery of Modern Civilization networked together and at the beck and call of each human's on-board cybernetics. And then there is the requirement of creating Homo Servitus, which is also the title of the following short essay; “The need for a reliable Labor Force is one of the oldest and most difficult issues of human civilization. The harsh truth is that we Baseline Humans are too varied, too impulsive, too inconsistent and always dissatisfied with something. To create order among us eventually requires lies and coercion and as such leads to Tyranny, which damages the Oppressor as much as the Oppressed by brutalizing both. Better then to turn the Means of Production to the production of Workers themselves, a genetically engineered Servitor Class, beings who are happy with their lot and take pleasure from performing their duties. Such beings would have simple needs, requiring only humane treatment and modest comfort beyond their Purpose as Workers to make their lives pleasurable. Many of you will react with horror at this entire line of thinking. Yet consider this; the device upon which you are reading these words requires a number of Rare Earths to function. Many of those elements are mined in the Congo by people who are essentially slaves, most of them war refugees and quite a few survivors of War Rape. Their lives are a daily regime of brutality and for most their only escape is death. I'm sure you're horrified by that as well, but you're not going give up your device, are you? The technologies necessary to create Homo Servitus are already under development. The parsing of genes that guide certain behavioral tendencies. Cloning from ordinary human cells. Uterine Replicators. Cerebral implants to guide and control behavior. Many of the various members of this Servitor Class would be designed and grown with their specific tasks in mind. A small number would be more generalized servants. But they would all be grown, which is their major advantage over robots. Robots require complex engineering and lots of raw materials. This type of biological Servitor Class also avoids the existential danger of creating independent and mobile AIs. On the other end of the scale, we need to evolve a type of Homo Superior..but that's a tale for another time. Either way, we Baseline Humans will soon need to move off the stage before we wreck the whole place.” Given that I envision the idea Homo Superior as Cyborg Amazons, the DNA to be used for Homo Servitus would be that of Baseline Males. And there will even be some Baseline Males who will happily volunteer to undergo transformation into some types of Servitors, much in the fashion of submissive Males who wish to be Collared by Female Dominants today. This then is my view of the optimal form of Transhumanism, a Transhumanist Matriarchy. It should be noted that many in the Transhumanist community seem share a certain outlook, the admirable view that Transhumanism will succeed by pure reason and logic alone. But the vast majority of Baseline Humans are *not* reasonable nor logical. As a species we tend to automatically view Change as Loss, are largely superstitious, fear driven and more often than not act with a violent irrationality upon anything we perceive as threatening whatever little epistemological ghetto we happen to live in. Something like Transhumanism is utterly terrifying to most Baseline Humans as they quite accurately see it as heralding the end of their line. That is a profound existential threat that I guarantee will be meet with an extreme and brutal reaction. To deny this reality is suicidal foolishness. This is a Struggle for The Future. Such is not for the faint of heart nor the weak willed. We in the Transhumanist community have a double challenge, that of upgrading and improving The Race while simultaneously fighting off those who wish to maintain the status quo. At certain points that will require the use of Violent Force. I repeat, 'To deny this reality is suicidal foolishness.' Many in the Transhumanist community will find this a repugnant paradigm and reject it. I suspect no small number of those will have an unpleasant fate upon actually encountering said paradigm. The more bloody minded of us will carry on and do our best to defend those with that more 'enlightened' world view from the brutal ugliness of the real unenlightened world Something to keep in mind; that those who want the species to remain just as it is vastly outnumber us, their 'reality' is already in place and no small number of them will be quite happy to kill us in order to stop our work.

An analysis of Hide and Kaneki’s relationship, choices, and reasons PT.II

AKA the sequel to this post I made some time ago, sparked by a certain discussion I had on twitter.

Before anything else, I’d like to declare that I’m not here to make a stand or anything, but rather just to lay out some brain vomit things to consider when thinking about HideKane. You’re free to come to your own conclusions because tbvh I’m a terrible judge of relationships unless there’s extremities involved. Heck, maybe it’s just me, but I feel like the lines are intentionally blurred when it comes to these two and the more I keep pondering over them the more upset I get _(:D

Anyways. In my previous post I pointed out Kaneki’s possible reasons for doing what he did and leaving Hide behind, and while I’m going to touch a bit on that again here, I’ll also blabber a bit on Hide’s reasons this time. I mentioned how I feel the lines are blurred when it comes to their relationship, and half-asleep me managed to conclude that it’s partly due to a few main external factors that might’ve steered them towards the routes they took.

*As I’m not the most informed when it comes to mental illnesses, note that my analysis might also miss out points that may involve the role of it. As I mentioned before, this is basically more of a brain vomit than an argument I’m trying to put out.

Also this contains a hella ton of spoilers. Be warned.

Right. So the first factor is, as I’ve mentioned in my first post, the fact that they have limited choices over what could be done. What else could Kaneki have done? Was the question that haunted me a good portion of the night, and let me tell you, I still don’t know. If I were in his shoes that time, I’d be too panicked to think past my own internal screaming. I mean, suddenly I can’t eat my comfort food anymore and everyone around me is killing everoyone and holy jesus there’s blood everywhere what the fu- you get the picture. I tried coming up with some alternatives, and tbh none of them sounds appealing. Well, perhaps they could be a tad bit better depending on how you see it, but from how I view it most of them wouldn’t end.. nicely??

I’d be bringing this up again a few times along the bs I’m spouting but let me begin with the most basic Route B, and that’s where Kaneki finds the courage to sit down and actually communicate with Hide about his situation and explain why he needs to stay away. Say that happens, and Kaneki makes it clear: okay, Hide, I’ve been turned into a ghoul and we’re surrounded by scary people you need to stay back or else you might have your ass handed to you again by someone even more violent than Nishio-senpai and you might die and that’s not good. Great. Fantastic. There’s communication and the main source of all angst has been eliminated. He can properly dash Hide’s hopes before he could even think of chasing after him.

But  would Hide listen?

Here comes in the second factor, which is the feeling of guilt. Pls excuse me as I take a quick break from being a Kaneki apologist and focus a bit on Hide. As a fanfic author I’ve done my best to understand his character from the bits of him here and there we’re given in the manga; mainly his personality and drives. Despite how he looks and acts, Hide is incredibly smart, and is able to remain scarily calm in dangerous situations, as seen in the scene where he admits to have stolen clothes off the corpse of a ghoul before approaching Yamori, and the time where he knew how to fend off Cain before leaving the finishing blow to the Doves in the first novel. Basically what I’m trying to say is, this boy can think. He’s rational. He would at the very least be able to guess why Kaneki would suddenly disappear. He should also know full well how much danger he’d be plunging ass first into if he decided to chase after Kaneki. But he still did anyway.

And here’s where interpretations come in. A lot of fans—myself included, tbh—believe that his main driving force for this was his pure loyalty towards Kaneki. And I understand that it’s not exactly the healthiest thing in a relationship for one to be willing to literally throw away everything for the other. There has to be line drawn somewhere and goddamnit Hideyoshi why. But it also occurred to me yesterday that guilt might also have influenced his decision. It’s like I said before, Hide would be aware of the shit he’s getting himself into if he stepped into the world of ghouls. Even if it’s Kaneki, there could’ve been an instance where he did hesitate. He could’ve realized that he’s too powerless in the face of danger to be of help and perhaps it really would be the best to keep their distance.

You could argue that it’s his unhealthy dedication that primarily drove him to go so far and I’m not going to counter that, but I also think guilt might’ve given him the push to follow him. Hide tried to discourage Kaneki from going on his date with Rize, but not hard enough. He already sensed something not right about her, why didn’t he insist for Kaneki to not go at all? If only he hadn’t doubted his intuition that one time, then perhaps it wouldn’t have ended up like this. Those sorts of thoughts would’ve haunted him. I’m almost confident that if the victim of the incident had been anyone besides Kaneki, Hide would’ve been able to turn away. He’d be able to accept that well, how could he have known that a date with a beautiful lady would lead to a change of species? But it’s Kaneki who’s involved, his best friend for more than ten years. Emotions no doubt came into the equation and Hide.. can’t just abandon him, can he? I know there’s a number of people who suspects Hide will pull a betrayal sometime in the future, but Hide’s affection towards Kaneki could very well be the real deal. To spare you from an even lengthier post, I’ll just direct you to the fourth point of bloodycarnation’s Hide analysis (which I love until this time and day, bless you for writing it). Besides, there’s also a chance that Hide wanted to be able to actually do something, rather than just acting as support from the sidelines like he did when Kaneki was still with his aunt.

And basically what I’m getting at here is: his affection towards Kaneki could’ve given him a sense of responsibility, and that sense of responsibility could’ve led to a sense of guilt that made him willing to sacrifice even his own life if that’s what it meant to make up for what he thought was his fault. Hide’s motivation might not have been blind loyalty alone.

I also notice that the main fault that a number of people hold against Kaneki is the fact that he went on with life as if Hide no longer existed until he needed him to keep him grounded while Hide was practically throwing away everything for him. I’ve babbled some bit about this in my first post, so I’ll just add on to it here and say that.. it might be a little unfair to come to that conclusion based on what’s explicitly shown in canon. We were only given glimpses of what, several hours and days out of the many months Kaneki was with Banjou and the gang? And out of all of them, he’s shown to be caught up in something or another most of the time. It’s natural that we’re not shown any thoughts about Hide when his mind should be occupied with his plans and goals and all that jazz. In fact, almost every glimpse of Kaneki’s thoughts we’re shown are about him assessing their situation, or about his hallucinations.

But there’s one relatively leisurely instance (which I rmb anyways) where we’re shown Kaneki’s thoughts, and that’s during the mention of Eto’s book-signing even. And who came up in his mind?

Also there’s this panel during the torture scene in Ch.61 which I somehow forgot and really, I think the screenshot speaks for itself.

Now let’s take things up a notch and fast forward a bit and take a look at this certain page in :re that sent me hurtling in tears down the void:

The crucial thing I want to point out before elaborating further is how Kaneki has a tendency to put on a mask and keep his feelings to himself, even in front of Hide. So to end up like this, in tears and admitting that he’s lonely to Hide’s face, even if he is a product of his imagination—it speaks volumes. The emotions seems to have built up to the point that even he can’t hold them in anymore. And who can say how long had he been shutting the feelings away? Who’s to say he hadn’t thought of him time and again but simply forced him out of his mind because he can’t afford to crumble? I know I keep defending Kaneki for his mistakes but I just think it’s a little harsh to criticize him for not caring simply because we weren’t shown much in the narration. Post-torture Kaneki no doubt had the most fragile mental state throughout the entire TG timeline, and forcing himself to focus on his mission might very well have been a sort of coping mechanism as well. Of course, you can argue as well that he might only have felt this painfully lonely after he regained his memories and all so really, it’s up to your own interpretations. Just trying to give some food for thought, if that’s how you put the phrase lmao-

And yes, I suppose some of us would also think hey, he could at least mention Hide to his new gang and all so yknow, he could show he still remembers him. Heck I would like that too because I would give $5 to see Hinami pointing out how Kaneki seems brighter when he talks about Hide //clenches fists. But there’s always a but, and it’s that there are possible instances of violent interrogations and Kaneki might not want to take the risk. By speaking of Hide even to his own allies, he’d create the slimmest possibility of dragging him into the world he’d tried to push him away from. What I’m saying is yes, there could be issues of trust going on here too because Kaneki is a very flawed character (which you can read a bit more about in my first analysis). I think it’s also a little interesting to point out how Kaneki does mention Hide to those who already know him before things went to shit (mainly Touka, as seen here and here, but also Rize in his mind in Ch.62) but never to those whom he only met when he was deeper in that mess of the latter TG timeline.

It occurred to me that things could have been different, though. That is, only if Kaneki’s hadn’t received Rize’s kakuhou of all people, and did not have the terrible luck of a true tragic protag. If it hadn’t been for those two factors, Kaneki might—and I’m saying might—have been able to open up to Hide eventually. If he’d been able to meet Nishiki and Kimi on better terms, heard Ikuma’s story of being raised by humans, not attracted Tsukiyama’s gourmet attention, and if he had not basically received a hugeass slap of what the fuck across the face so soon and in such short intervals since his entire world changed—things could’ve proceeded differently. He might have been able to realize that there is a possibility for him to quietly live on as a ghoul while still being with Hide. But the ghouls did not give him much of a great first impression, did they?

Hypothetically speaking, it would’ve been the most merciful for both Hide and Kaneki if Kaneki had simply been one of Rize’s many snacks. Kaneki would die on the spot and… Hide might’ve ended up the protag?? Or maybe Ishida could’ve just panned the focus elsewhere and we’d be reading Osaka Ghoul now, who knows. But noo bad luck had to strike again and Furuta had to choose that exact night to vent his salt and drop those steel beams. Furuta himself mentions how he hadn’t been targeting Kaneki specifically, so yeah. Plain hecked up luck.

All jokes aside tho, Rize’s existence is a heavy plot point in the manga, and I feel that possessing her kakuhou alone has significantly limited the possible outcomes of any alternative routes Kaneki might’ve taken. Case in point, let’s say Route C is where Kaneki’s able to feel safe enough to trust and tell Hide about his transformation. Hide tells him okay, he’ll keep his secret safe, he’ll help cover for him if he needs him. They go on with life as usual. Or, Hide could propose something else: running away. He’s never heard of violent ghoul incidents in Gunma, Kanagawa, etc so let’s go there and start over! (again, the thing about throwing everything away for him). I’ve already touched on how the CCG takes the action of not reporting ghouls a crime punishable by death, and it takes very little for a stranger to suspect and report them both. And as for how Rize’s kagune plays into this.. well we see that her kakuhou brings all the ghouls to the yard and somehow or another word would’ve spread and they’d eventually find themselves in some very unpleasant situations regardless. And even if Kaneki has learnt how to fight by then, there’s still a chance that he might be overpowered (e.g by sheer numbers alone) and what would happen then? Hide would try to defend him and get himself rekt. Probably.

And here’s the thing: from my own understanding, one of the bases of a healthy relationship is  an equal amount of give and take. And there should be limits even for that. One of the reasons why Hide and Kaneki’s relationship can be seen as unhealthy is not how Hide holds Kaneki so dear that he’s willing to put his own wellbeing at risk just to find him again even after being so coldly left behind, but also how Kaneki depends on Hide’s existence so much that  he’s willing to give up his own life the moment he thought he was dead (for reference, see pg.15-17 of :RE Ch.68). It kinda gives the quote “his existence is something I depend on as much as my heart” a more literal meaning, doesn’t it-

I’m going to pose a question here because I myself am unsure, but were there other motivations for him to attempt sacrifice his life that point in time? There could have been other ways to save Hinami and escape, but was anything mentioned? Because if not, there are two (and maybe more) possible ways to interpret the scene in Ch.68, and that’s 1) he thinks Hide is dead and he didn’t think he could live in a world without him knowing he might very well have been the one to kill him, and 2) he used Hide’s death as a “excuse” for his own long-awaited suicide (I do apologize if this sounds ableist or offending, but it’s the only way I can think of putting it accurate atm). I’ll leave it to you guys to digest this yourselves.

Long story short, I can see where the notion of their relationship being toxic stems from and really, thinking about this gave me plenty of dreadful realizations as well. They’re both willing to give too much for the other about sums it up I guess? But it’s as I said earlier, it does seem a little unreasonable to peg Kaneki as the sole source of all their bond’s bad aspects. Hide, too, made his choice by his own will. They followed what they judged as the best course of action. Also, one of the incredible things about Ishida-sensei’s narration is how he’s able to weave everything into one complex web of interactions, and surrounding circumstances they did not have control over could’ve influenced their decisions as well.

And before I roll away back into my cave, allow me to state that I don’t think their relationship’s beyond saving. Kaneki’s shown to be growing as time passes, and he’s learning. I believe there’s still hope in :RE for him to finally learn about his mistakes, and with sensei’s blessings they can meet up and argue and cry and forgive and I can bang my head repeatedly against the wall in more tears.

So it’s easy to see why SEO has become a cornerstone of marketing strategies everywhere. At TopRank Marketing, we talk often about gaining this coveted visibility by being the best answer for customers, and how to achieve it through deep, comprehensive, high-quality content. But before a brand can go about creating best answers, it must determine which crucial curiosities it wants to satisfy. Herein lies the key to developing a search marketing approach that integrates with a customer-centric strategy.

Hearing Your Customer’s Voice

In many ways, the advent of voice search really crystallizes Google’s function as an answer machine (or “answer engine” as our CEO Lee Odden has put it). ComScore predicted a while back that by 2020, more than 50% of searches would be conducted by voice, and suddenly that’s less than a year away. This fast-rising trend strengthens the wisdom of a “best answer” strategy for two primary reasons:

Featured snippets (aka “answer boxes”) are gaining more prominence as the default result delivered by a voice search. These excerpts are deemed by Google to be the “best answer” for a particular query, based on various factors.  

We’re moving toward a more literal question/answer format with search, because while people might type a string of keywords to research a particular topic (“best answer seo strategy digital marketing”), they tend to be more colloquial when speaking to a voice-search device (“What does a best answer SEO strategy mean for digital marketers?”).

Structuring SEO around conversational keywords is nothing new. As we wrote here on the TopRank Marketing Blog a couple of years ago:

Google has been encouraging this type of behavior for years, especially with the Hummingbird update back in 2013. People communicate with conversations, not just keywords. Associating the right keywords with concepts helps the overall content quality as opposed to targeting only one or a couple keywords per page.

In other words, you want to address not just a specific keyword with your content, but rather the breadth of what someone is trying to learn when they search for that keyword. And so, search marketing today is less about building traditional keyword lists, and more about using those lists – along with other resources – to make deductions about which questions your customers (and potential customers) are asking. Your findings should become the foundational basis for both organic and paid strategy. Unfortunately, no machine will serve up a quick-and-easy answer in this case. It’ll take meticulous research and deep insight about your audience. Let’s walk through that process a little to set you on the right path.

How to Identify Best Answer Opportunities

Here are a few tactics for making confident determinations about the burning questions you want to answer for your customers

Reverse-Engineer Keyword Data

Marketers have a wealth of SEO data at their fingertips, and can use this information as breadcrumbs tracing back to a user’s starting point. Dig into Google Search Console to learn which queries are bringing people to your site and how many people are clicking through from particular searches. Instead of simply parsing out keywords, seek patterns and greater meaning in this data. What is it telling you about the mindset of searchers who end up on your page? By connecting search terms to pages on your site, you can get a better idea of the intent behind them (e.g., searches that are bringing people to solutions pages likely represent a more advanced stage of research).

Use the “People Also Asked” Feature in Google

I love this little feature. When you run a search, Google will often serve up a list of related questions, and these can be extremely helpful when it comes to building out your best answer content. If you want to create an authoritative resource on the topic you’re targeting, chances are you’ll want to account for each of these tangential queries in some way.

Leverage Schema Markup

Schema structured data helps search engines (and their users) understand the purpose of a page, and the questions it is trying to answer. Adding these tags to your source code enables a SERP to display rich snippets that are directly relevant to a searcher’s query. Why is this so powerful and relevant? Last summer Google confirmed that it had been testing a new featured snippets in the form of FAQs, Q&A, and How-tos. And as it turns out, Schema.org has a lot of this markup readily available.

Rely on the Right Tools

There are three in particular that I like to use for this type of research:

SEMrush: Awesome SEO tool that shows real-time keyword volumes and (more importantly in this case) “Phrase Match Keywords” and “Related Keywords, which can lead you down other branching paths for that search journey. The Keyword Magic tool is very helpful for finding question keywords.

BuzzSumo: A great site for finding trends around any topic or keyword. In particular, I recommend using its Question Analyzer function, which is perfectly suited for the purpose at hand. This enables you to identify questions being asked on Q&A sites or forums, clustered by topics.

AnswerThePublic: The “auto suggest” feature in Google is similar in function to “People Also Asked,” but can provide more extensive insight. AnswerThePublic helpfully takes these snippets and turns them into conversational keywords, delivering a “question wheel” of longtail inquiries stemming from that term.

Go In-Depth with Marketing Attribution Models

Multi-touch attribution is not easy to master, but those marketers who gain proficiency are able to tap into key buyer signals. When you follow the string backward on a purchase someone made, identifying touch points along the way, you can learn a great deal about the questions they asked and the content they consumed to reach that decision.   As you start to gain a better grasp of the searches that carry clear commercial intent, you can begin to situate your PPC strategy around them. Those are usually the clicks worth paying for.

Search for Whitespace in SERPs

Not every priority question for your audience will be worth attacking. Make honest assessments about the existing search results for certain terms. If another company (or, in many cases, Wikipedia) is already owning the answer box with a stellar page, you may want to turn your attention elsewhere or at least push it to the back burner. The sweet spot is when you can find popular questions among your audience that aren’t already being definitively covered. This also applies to paid keywords with lower competition. Those are the gaps you want to fill with your best answer strategy. As your site gains authority and backlinks, you may find it easier to topple some of the entrenched leaders for other high-volume queries and higher-cost keywords.

Break Down Questions and Build Up Best Answers

The late businessman Arnold Glasow once said, “It’s easier to see both sides of a question than the answer.” Very true. When marketers make the effort to see every side of the questions their customers are asking, we can see the bigger picture and craft content to fully satisfy the extent of a searcher’s interest.
