The Oyo State Government and the Federal Government have fine-tuned agreement on the proposed $99,665,626 (N35.9bn) Ibadan Inland Dry Port, which is expected to ease the pressure on the Apapa Seaport and the perennial gridlock on the Oshodi-Apapa Expressway. The agreement was signed by the Governor, Senator Abiola Ajimobi on behalf of the state, while the Transport Minister, Mr Rotimi Amaechi, signed on behalf of the FG at a brief ceremony, at the governor’s office, Ibadan, on Tuesday. A white Mercedes Benz G-Wagon belonging to Governor of Ekiti state, Ayodele Fayose, was on Tuesday completely burnt down in Lagos

A traffic official and witness said the driver of the G-Class, who waited behind until the fire was put off, later went in to pack some burnt N500 notes and other items in the car.

He said, “The accident happened around 1.30pm on the Oshodi-Apapa Expressway inward Airport Road. It happened on the Oshodi bridge, not too far from the LASTMA’s headquarters.

“We cannot tell the exact cause of the fire. We gathered from those at the scene that the governor was in the G-Class when the accident happened and he quickly escaped into another car in his convoy.

“On getting to the scene, we saw the driver who tried to cover his face with a Fez cap. He watched helplessly as the fire raged on. We alerted the state fire service and LASEMA. The LASEMA response unit had to take one way to access the accident scene because the road was blocked because of the inferno.

“On arrival, they were able to douse the fire. The vehicle was seriously burnt. The driver did not talk to anybody. We saw as he started packing some of the burnt cash in the car. They were N500 notes. He packed the money with some other items into a polythene bag. This was in the presence of traffic officials and the police. We later cleared the traffic as the carcass of the car was towed away by LASEMA.”

However, the Special Assistant to Fayose on New Media and Public Communications, Lere Olayinka, said the governor was not in the car.

In a statement he issued on the incident on Wednesday, Olayinka explained that Fayose was heading for the Lagos airport when the car got burnt.

He said the cause of the accident remained a mystery.

Fayose was among the 17 Southern Governors, that converged in Lagos on Monday , to discuss crucial national issues.

The others included: Lagos State Governor, Akinwunmi Ambode; Ogun State Governor, Ibikunle Amosun; Ondo State Governor, Rotimi Akeredolu; Osun State Governor, Rauf Aregbesola and Oyo State Governor, Abiola Ajimobi.

The Governors of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike; Edo State, Godwin Obaseki; Abia State, Okezie Ikpeazu; Enugu State, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi; Akwa Ibom State, Emmanuel Udom and Ebonyi State, David Umahi, were also present.

The Governments of Oyo and Osun states have each contributed N250 million each towards resolving the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH) crisis that has kept the school shut for over eight months.

A source disclosed to Newspeakonline that the university was already in possession of the money totaling N500million.

The institution has been shut for up to eight months owing to financial crisis that led to a prolonged industrial action by all categories of workers in the institution.

Last week, students of the students protested in Ibadan, marching the streets all the way to the Governor’s office.

Governor Abiola Ajimobi, while addressing the angry students, said he was doing all within his power to ensure that the school was reopened. He had promised that the state would contribute N250 million in order to ensure that workers went back to work.

The conversation with the students however turned dramatic and controversial when the governor berated the students for being unruly. But a meeting was later held where the students apologised and promised to work with the governor to see the end of the crisis.

The week before the protests, the governor had held series of meetings with the institution’s stakeholders where he assured that the school was going to be reopened before the end of January.
