Ponniyin Selvan has been watched (at a rather very late time last night) so here’s my review? (though I am in no position to review a mani ratnam film)
(I would like to emphasize this is my personal opinion and I would not like to start a war. There’s already one happening on Twitter if you’d like to go pick a bone)
Would I say this is the best Mani Ratnam film I’ve watched? No.
Would I say it’s his best from the past decade?. Heck yeah!
The movie (like one kind person said on this app) is fast paced and slow paced. If you’ve read atleast the first book, you’ll realize how jam packed the scenes are but if you’re clueless as to who the heck even the cholas are, this is gonna be one heck of a slow ride for you.
This movie is COMPLETELY different from the rajamouli periodic films (because some idiots on Twitter are comparing it to baahubali). There are barely any elevations, and the actors are very simply, just there when it’s time (in fact the only character that gets “a proper intro” is Aditya Karikalan, and it’s literally just him riding his horse through mist). Everything is super subtle and more pleasing on the aesthetic side. It’s more like an art film, like the ones of Kurosawa, than it is a commercial one like Rajamouli’s.
(Although, I actually am very interested to see how rajamouli would utilize a LOADED story like ponniyin selvan)
If you are planning on watching this movie, I would recommend reading the character descriptions on Wikipedia, because guess what? Mani sir does it again. Like in Chekka Chivantha Vaanam, every character has an important role, but mani sir is practically running out of time to explore the characters deep enough, so we just get mere glances into who they actually are.
BUT THE ACTING (my lord the acting) does HEAVILY compensate for that. Simple glances, body language, voice modulations, if one observes carefully, they can understand what type of a person said character is.
For me personally, Karthi (my man), Trisha, and Aishwarya Rai SWEPT ME OFF MY FEET. Karthi is AMAZING as Vandiyadevan. Trisha and Aishwarya Rai can step on me and I WILL APOLOGIZE. My god. Their initial face off scene is one of, if not the best scene for me in the movie. (Also Vandiyadevan is one hell of a mood for simping over literally EVERYONE in this movie).
In the very little screen time that is given, Chiyaan Vikram is ABSOLUTELY fantastic (pleaseeee more characters where he actually acts and not just shows is skill of being versatile) and so is the rest of the main cast, Jayam Ravi, Aishwarya Lekshmi and Shobitha. They’re on for very little, but when they are, you will not be able to take your eyes off of them.
And finally. The man of the hour. The person who literally carried this movie like Ponni did Arul Mozhi Varman. ISAI PUYAL AR RAHMAN. My god what did we do to deserve him? Many said the songs slowed down the pace, but honestly it kind of worked for me. And the BACKGROUND SCORE. HOLY CRAP IM GONNA NEED THAT OST. Super unique score and it kind of reminded me of Thiruda Thiruda (Donga Donga) Rahman where he just experiments with different styles and it works wonders. My personal favorite has to be the one that plays during the entire act of Kundavai and Nandini meeting for the first time. Some others are definitely when Vandiyadevan and Kundavai meet (and, of course, Vandiyadevan falls for her) and the ending of Chola Chola.
That is all. Sorry it’s ridiculously long.

Bollywood Goldies In New Avatar
I'm a self confessed desi music fan and despite my love for rock and trippy English music, my heart is always desi cue patriotic conch blow. This article gives a summary of the songs of the film I Hate Luv Storys. Fitoor features the gorgeous Pashmina and the trippy, synth-pop Ranga Re. But none has the originality of Hone Do Batiyan, a sororal duet, sung by Zeb Bangash and Nandini Srikar as though the two ladies are merely talking.
youtube
I like Pritam's music and look forward to his Love Aaj Kal - more so because its Imtiaz's film. That made me wonder how our popular Bollywood songs, down the ages, have preferred calling women 'gori'. You can make use of their daily or weekly paid plans to download unlimited mp3 songs and always keep your music space updated.
For this one, we will say that the new song is better and improved version of the earlier track. This track sung by Shafqat Amanat Ali Khan and Sunidhi Chauhan is not exactly a slow romantic track, but it is a fast paced romantic song. From box office movies to the latest Bollywood hits, Radio Mirchi is a one-stop solution for all your music needs.
The song is from the good old days and features Rajesh Khanna and Asha Parekh. The youngsters aren't complaining though, with the song registering a record number of views on YouTube and the filmmakers are laughing all the way to the bank. This song is from the movie "Veere di Wedding" starring Kareena Kapoor Khan, Sonam Kapoor, Swara & Shikha.
And both these films have something more in common - a remix of a popular Hindi song. Both these songs have a sense of the film's setting, Kashmir, and its women. On Thursday, as the sun set, Hindi movie lovers in the UAE stepped out in large numbers to meet their favourite stars.
Whether you are a fan of Rihanna or Rehman, it hosts over 1.7 million Indian and international songs. The most watched Malayalam song ever on YouTube, Entammede Jimikki Kammal inspired countless cover versions and dance videos from across India and the world.
The songs of My Name is Khan are all western style keeping the Indian music and instruments. This popular chartbuster sung by the legendary Asha Bhonsle in Monsoon Wedding (1993) was reprised in Karan Johar's Ae Dil Hai Mushkil last year, in a song picturised on Ranbir Kapoor and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan.
So, you cannot download your preferred set of songs, though you can get on-demand content access to podcasts as well as music shows. Though all the songs, composed by Ajay-Atul, struck a chord with listeners, Zingaat, in particular, went on to become a monster hit.
His latest track, a mash-up of Michael Jackson's Billie Jean and Rahman's Jiya Re has hit over 2,48,201 views since February, 2016. While watching new-age superstars Alia Bhatt and Varun Dhawan dance to ‘Tamma Tamma' in their upcoming film Badrinath Ki Dulhaniya, our minds race back to the song picturised on Sanjay Dutt and Madhuri Dixit from Thanedaar.
Pop singer Guru Randhawa is the surprising element in the list hindi chartbusters as two of his songs have made the list - Lahore” with 408 million views and High Rated Gabru” with 370 million views. While Saifeena looked beautiful in Raabta's original version, Deepika Padukone's sexy avatar in its recreated version for the film Raabta, was surely a sight to behold.
It has been sung by Puerto Rican singer Luis Fonsi and features famous Puerto Rican rapper Daddy Yankee. Tareefan is a latest song from Badshah that has been used in Bollywood movie Veere Di Wedding. This holi song is very Holi and features Alia Bhatt and Varun Dhawan dancing to the wonderful tunes.
Sanjay Leela Bhansali used this classical song track from his own film in his recent release - Bajirao Mastani. Even though it was the duet Yaanji that led the battery of Vikram Vedha's hit songs (composed by Sam CS) in the charts, Karuppu Vellai remained the dark horse in the soundtrack.

Leading Bollywood actress Come back to Bollywood Industry
The birth of a child leads to a change in priorities for a woman. Bollywood actresses took sabbaticals and had to let their careers take a backseat for a while in order to take care of their kids. Many of these actresses made their comeback in the industry once their kids were old enough to not need their mothers all the time.
Here are a few Bollywood actresses who took a sabbatical from work.
Sridevi –
The late actress had worked in many films until her marriage to producer Boney Kapoor. Her last film as a leading lady was in 1997 with the film Judaai. She gave birth to her first daughter Jhanvi that same year and, as a result, took a sabbatical from films. Her second daughter Khushi was born in 2000. Sridevi made her comeback on the small screen for some time with Malini Iyer. However, her big screen debut came with Gauri Shinde’s English Vinglish in 2014 which was successful. Sridevi is touted to be the only actress to have made a successful comeback post maternity.
Madhuri Dixit –
Married in 1999, the dhak-dhak girl took a break from movies after her first son Arin was born in 2003. Madhuri had moved to the United States but continued to work until the birth of her son. Her second son Raayan was born in 2005. Both the kids spent their early childhood in America. However, Madhuri longed to be back on screen. In 2007, she made a comeback with YRF’s Aaja Nachle. The movie failed at the BO, but her fans were happy to see her back. She also debuted on the small screen as the judge of a dance reality show.
Aishwarya Rai Bachchan –
The former Miss World continued to work in films after her marriage to Abhishek Bachchan. She did 5 back to back films. However, all these movies failed at the box office. Nevertheless, Aishwarya’s performance in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Guzaarish was much appreciated. She took a sabbatical of four years after her daughter Aaradhya was born in 2011. She returned to movies in 2015 with Jazbaa opposite Irfan Khan. The movie did not fare well, but Aishwarya was flooded with offers to work in more movies.
Juhi Chawla –
She had kept her marriage to Jay Mehta under wraps for the fear of losing work in the industry. Juhi Chawla continued to appear in movies as supporting characters or giving guest appearances. However, she was not the leading lady anymore. After the birth of her children Jhanvi in 2001 and Arjun in 2003, she continued to work, albeit in smaller roles. Her proper comeback came with Gulab Gang in 2014 opposite Madhuri Dixit.
Raveena Tandon –
She was already a single mother to two adopted daughters. She continued to work in myriad films, many of which earned her critical acclaim. Raveena Tandon married Anil Thadani in 2004 and a year later gave birth to daughter Rasha. Her son Ranbir was born in 2007. Raveena took a sabbatical for a brief period post which she made her debut with an equally strong role of a mother seeking revenge for her daughter in Maatr.
Kajol –
A rage in the 90s and early 2000s, Kajol worked in films till the birth of her daughter Nysa in 2003. However, she soon returned as the leading lady with the film Fanaa, opposite Aamir Khan. She was again on sabbatical post the birth of her son Yug in 2010. But, she soon returned with Rohit Shetty’s Dilwale, starring opposite her long-time co-star Shah Rukh Khan.
Karisma Kapoor –
A super successful actress from the 90s, Karisma Kapoor was also the first woman from the mighty Kapoor family to break the patriarchal rules and work in films. She took a break from films after her marriage to businessman Sanjay Kapoor. Her daughter Samaira was born in 2005, post which her marriage went sour. However, the couple reconciled and had a son Kiaan in 2010. Karisma made her comeback in films in 2012 with Vikram Bhatt’s Dangerous Ishq. But the film bombed at the BO.
Shilpa Shetty –
She worked not just in Bollywood but also in regional cinema including South Indian movies. She married businessman Raj Kundra in 2009 and birthed a son Viaan in 2012. Shilpa had also appeared in international celebrity reality show Big Brother post which she worked in Anurag Basu’s Life in a Metro. She currently judges a dance reality show.
Though except Sridevi, we did not see most these actresses on screen frequently; they do keep us on tenterhooks with news of their latest releases.
